The best thing about snowboarding? It‘s a great way to spend your winter! Nothing else you do brings
the same level of intensity and fun. There is nothing better than going to the mountain and just ride and
forget about whatever crap is going on in your life for a few hours!

You can feel it!
Völkl Snowboards combines modern technology with 90 years experience – we have been at the forefront of winter sports since 1923. The progressive work of the in-house Research & Development department and race laboratory is what sets Völkl Snowboards apart from the rest of the market. Since Völkl started building snowboards in 1987, 26 years ago, the R&D department and their innovations have pushed our snowboards‘ performance to a new height each season. It is no great surprise that some features or materials only get used by Völkl Snowboards and not by other brands: for example, the specific Völkl Premium Carbon, the unique Grip Lacquer topsheet, the innovative Powder Channel, the clever Horror-Shock Absorber or the AVS (Anti-Vibrations-System).
A technological head start that is based on the uncompromising use of premium high-tech materials as well as on the input of our team riders. Only technology that has proved of value in powder, pipe or park, goes into serial production. And we fully trust the judgement of our pros because nobody loves snowboarding as much as they do!

For years more and more snowboarders are caught up by the fascination of freeriding. Endless powder, beautifully soft pillows, the infinite width of the mountains and untouched – maybe never before ridden – terrain, cause pure feelings of pleasure even for experienced snowboard pros.
Canada, oh Canada! There’s more than one way up / Behind the lines...
The little town in the south-east
of the Canadian province British
Columbia is considered to be one
of the resorts with the most reliable
snow conditions world wide. It
also claims to be the only resort
world-wide to offer lift, cat, heli
and backcountry boarding from one
village base.
After the arrival in Calgary the crew
around the Austrian photographer
Alex Papis and cinematographer
Chris Garside from New Zealand
was pretty astonished and happy
when they received their rented
motorhome. For the next two
weeks the monstrous RV was
supposed to be hotel, transport
vehicle and kitchen all at once for
Alex, Chris and the teamriders Ueli
Kestenholz and Roy Broennimann
from Switzerland and Michi “Stani”
Stanschitz from Austria. But before
the crew could plough the first virgin
Champagne Powder, they had to hit
the road east for 400 kilometers
into the Rockies where Canadian
team rider Joe Lax welcomed them
in Revelstoke.
To get used to the resort around
Revelstoke, the crew made it simple
on the first days and used the most
common way to get to the top of the
mountains: the chairlift. During the
ascent with the lift the guys already
spotted endless features that were only a couple of
hiking minutes away from the slopes and it seemed that
these only waited to get ripped. Especially Stani didn’t
know where to start:
I was running around with the biggest smile on my face, I just
couldn’t believe what I saw: Pillows here, some cliff drops there and a
nice line over there…it was the best terrain I ever saw and I was ever
allowed to shred.
And even Joe, who has the privilege to call this winter-
wonderland his home, was dragged along by the enthu-
siasm of the others: “The boys looked like little kids in
a candy store as we explored the lower elevation zones
around the Revelstoke resort. It reminded me how good
we have it here in BC.” But the “Pineapple express”, a
strong flow of atmospheric moisture with heavy preci-
pitation, had lowered the possibilities for big mountain
lines just on the days before the crew got there. So
even the swiss freeriders Ueli und Roy helped shovel a
nice powder kicker near the self named “snow ghosts”.
“Time for me to reactivate my forgotten freestyle skills,”
was all that Ueli said with a smile before he stomped his
first 360 into the buttery powder landing.
After the first sips of tasty BC Champagne Powder it
was time to take a dive in the big bowls. The Selkirk
Mountains were the supposed destination and the heli
was their choice of transportation. When the engine
and the blades of the heli started, the whole crew was
more than excited as – except for Ueli – it was their first
time in the bird.
But because the sky was cloud-covered all of a sudden
the heli was not able to start again just after their first
drop-off. Fortunately for the guys the chopper had
dropped them off in a bowl where they could reach
some features just by little hikes. The advantage that
a heli can fly you nearly everywhere to go shredding,
is opposed by a drawback that photographer Alex
summarized like this: “Dealing with the weather
conditions was like playing roulette and our only day
with the helicopter fell as a victim. We had to choose a
certain day, because it was the peak of the season and
so we couldn’t be spontaneous and wait for the best
conditions.”
Up next was the ascent option with a cat, a converted
snow-groomer with a passenger-cabin on the back.
With the cat the crew went back to the already known
backcountry of Revelstoke. Compared to a heli the cat is
much cheaper and you are not so extremely dependent
on the weather.

“After the bad luck with the heli and a couple of good
days with the cat, we pulled out our splitboards,”
remembers Ueli. Directly from Revelstoke they took
their Cashew Split in a bowl far from any slopes or
lifts. The crew relied only on the power of their legs
and thanks to the finally good weather conditions
every second of the bluebird day was used. Canadian
team-rider Joe couldn’t believe the motivation of his
European shred-buddies: “The guys were so motivated
that we milked every second of sun out of the day.” As
well as Joe, Stani also remembers the days with the
Cashew Split with a big smile: “I never hiked as much as
in those days, from 8 in the morning till 7 at night I did
not make a break longer that 10 minutes. There were
just too many features and I wanted to shred them all.”
Last but not least they wanted to climb the mountains
with a sled. Ueli, who had the most experience with all
ascent possibilities out of the crew, told about the sled
day, that it was snowing the whole day, “but thanks
of the snowmobiles we found a real interesting zone.”
“Riding such a sled is a lot of fun and gives you a real
rush. For snowboarding the possibilities access wise are
endless, which makes that vehicle for me one of the best
ways I ever discovered to get up on a mountain. With
the help of those powerful beasts you are able to access
such a huge variety of terrain you normally would only
be able to access with much more costly heli or cat
options,” Roy added affirming.
Pretty tired after two exciting weeks with all possible
weather conditions the mountains can offer, it was
pretty hard for the crew with Alex, Chris, Ueli, Roy, Joe
and Stani to draw a bottom line and to call one of the
ascent options their favorite. Ueli said that all options
have their eligibility. “They all have their advantages
and drawbacks, but at the end they are all a lot of fun.”
For the Völkl team every day was a highlight in its own
special way and so the closing words belong to Stani:
“Canada is amazing, you are able and allowed to do
everything you like. Just awesome!”
A big shout-out and thank you to Ueli Kestenholz for
organizing this trip and to his buddy Kenny Prevost
from www.heliski.ch. Big-ups also go to Revelstoke
Mountain Resort and Selkirk Tangiers for the perfect
support.
Roy Brönnimann: “After a long, hard but very successful
day in the Revelstoke backcountry Stani paused for a
moment on our way back into the valley and reflected
the unforgettable day in the stunning sunset high
above Revelstoke. These are the days that I constitute
the essence of my life and they are the reason for my
passion of snowboarding. These were moments that
will last forever.”

Alex Papis: “Canada is totally different than Europe. You can find unlimited possibilities and depending on your
budget, you can just choose how to get to the top of the mountains.”
Roy Brönnimann: “I never hit the road with such a big motorhome before and enjoyed every minute I was able to live
that particular special lifestyle, including the two RV parties we had along the way.“
Michi „Stani“ Stanschitz: “Finally it was our heli-day, the day I’ve dreamed of for so long! It was just unbelievable to
sit in the bird and to be able to tell the pilot where we wanted to be dropped.”
Roy Brönnimann: “Being able to be out there in the nature hiking mind blowing winter wonderland landscapes, ride
pillows and steep big mountain lines all day and get back to the valley in silent darkness put a long lasting smile
on my face.”

Since the first Squad boards were presented in 2003, we have constantly progressed and improved the series, but one thing hasn‘t changed: these top-notch boards not only feature the R&D department‘s overall knowledge, but also the best high-tech materials. For example, the ultra-light woodcore that turns the boards into true
flyweights, or the Völkl Premium Carbon inlay that offers killer pop.
At the same time, the Squad Series offers each rider exactly what he or she is looking for: the responsiveness and maximum edge hold of the Camber version for those who want to push the limits in park or pipe; or the playful and easy-to-turn
characteristics of the Rocker version for the jibbers out there that don‘t want to miss a park feature – the edge hold is superior for a Rocker board and offers absolute
control, even on the medium kicker line.
The Horror-Shock Absorber developed by Völkl is certainly also one of the Squad Series‘ secrets of success. What to wish more for than a high-performance board that is extremely strong and durable? The reason for this is armor wood! Thanks to the reinforcement in the bindings area that is made of specific wood with high structural density, all shocks and impacts get absorbed without moaning, and without causing micro cracks in the wooden core. Tests in the lab have proven that these boards can even withstand the weight of a compact car. As a nice side effect, the armor wood inlay also improves the board‘s pop – no wonder that our team riders are all going nuts.
Squad Prime / Squad Rocker
Together with a V-Flex inlay the Shock Absorber makes these boards stronger with better torsion properties.

On first sight, the Blunt Nose looks like a flattened but tra di-tional nose. However, com b ined with the adapted sidecut, it pro-vides for a longer contact length than a board in the same length with a regular shape. This makes it possible to ride a more agile, shorter board with the con tact length and edge pressure of a longer board.
Another ad van tage of the Blunt Nose: You have less board weight to move during spins, thus of fer ing a better feel ing and safer grabs.
high-tech freestyle rocker board that destroys any parkThe Freestyle Rocker makes the board very forgiving and easy-to-turn, while the Premium Carbon Weave grants killer pop on kickers. Our pro rider Chris Kröll is stoked about the brand-new Blunt Nose Geometry that provides the Squad Rocker with a longer effective edge while leaving the board‘s length unchanged. The most versatile freestyle board of all times!

park/camber board with great value for moneyThe Riot SQD Camber offers great response and rides very smooth, even on ice. The reason for this versatile performance is the know-how of the classic Squad Twin-Tip series that‘s hidden inside the board: Triaxial weave and V-Flex inlays provide perfect power transmission, while the integrated Shock Absorber disarms even the hardest landings. An unbeatable well-priced high-tech board for riders that live after the motto: “faster, higher, further”.

Shape
Philosophy Camber, Rocker or Hybrid? Different people have
different preferences; therefore, each Völkl rider
can choose the perfect shape according to his or her
personal needs.

Shape
Philosophy “Camber” describes a board shape that incorporates a classic/positive camber. These boards feature two contact points when the board is lying flat on the ground: one in the nose and the other one in the tail. In between those contact points, the board is bowed, providing the board with a certain snap that helps cope with the forces unleashed during a ride. A strong camber provides more edge-hold on icy slopes; a smoother camber makes the board more responsive. Camber boards offer very direct power transmission and great rides when it’s all about speed. They are perfect for progressive riders and XXL kicker lines.Squad Prime, Riot Camber, Dash, Coal XT,
Savvy Camber, Melody
Thanks to the soft Camber between the bindings and the soft Rocker in nose & tail, the Hybrid Shape is the perfect symbiosis between both “shape worlds”. The Xbreed SQD rides precise and direct, offering more pop than a traditional Rocker board – at the same time the shape allows for playful riding and offers more float in the powder than a traditional Camber board.
Nevertheless, the board is more playful at low speed than a Camber shape and more stable than a Rocker shape, especially at high speed. In short: a board that feels short, but offers the edge hold of a longer board.
When looking for absolute smoothness and maximum edge hold, you should choose a traditional Camber shape. In case you want to ride a playful, forgiving jib board, you should stick to the classic Rocker shape.
The Xbreed is definitely something in between...Xbreed SQD
Due to the Rocker Shape’s negative camber, the board touches the ground at one point, which is in the middle of the board. All Völkl boards with Rocker have a flat section between the bindings, while the nose and tail are floating in the air. This shape provides better float in powder and is generally easy to turn and playful. Perfect for jibs and tricks, but also very forgiving, making these boards an interesting option for inexperienced riders.

The Hybrid Shape is the perfect symbiosis between Rocker & Cam-ber Shape for many riders.
Thanks to the moderate camber in between the bindings, Hybrid boards ride precise and direct.
A Hybrid Shape is playful at low speed and more stable than a Rocker Board at high-speed runs – a board that feels short, but offers the edge hold of a longer board.
rocker and camber in one boardThe Xbreed SQD is a hybrid board: Camber between the bindings, Rocker in nose and tail. Thanks to the Camber Shape you get more control and edge hold. At the same time, the Rocker makes the board more playful and provides more float than a Camber board. The result: High speed runs on the pro kicker line will feel as easy as first lines in bottomless champagne powder.

There are no real guidelines for street snowboarding. With some
experience and a few missions on your back, you will be equipped an
expert eye and discover creative spots wherever you are. You start
imagining the lines that your jib board might take over down rails,
close out rails, drops, wall rides, gaps, bonks and transfers. now you
only have to turn your dreams into reality. Here, michi Schatz (auT)
and maciek Dlugosz (poL), reveal their tricks and tips when attacking
the urban neighborhood with their Völkl boards. >>>

First of all, you have to check if you have enough snow for the drop-in kicker and the landing. If snow is in short supply you can easily use pallets or similar material to build a kicker or a drop. Salt and water are a great help during the construction: At warm temperatures salt extracts water from the snow which compresses the snow making it hard. At low temperatures water has the same effect making the obstacle more stable. If the local conditions don‘t allow for the necessary run-in, you can use a bungee rope or a winch. But often your buddies can be of help too, simply pushing you to gain enough speed. Now it‘s time for some action! But don‘t forget to play “Rock, Paper, Scissors” first to draw the guinea pig...
hen on an urban mission, Michi never leaves the house without a little paper notebook. In this book
he documents each spot with the street name and pictures of the scenery (in-run, landing, surroundings). That saves time if you are checking out the spot a second time. It is also essential to write down if you can ride the spot at day or at night to avoid any conflicts with the neighbors. But the greatest advantage of this notebook is that you can decide at home which spot you and your homies want to approach next. That saves time and frustration on missions!
38
Depending on the spot, you need different equipment! Power engine, spotlights, extension cord, multi-plug, toolbox, shovels, flex, saw, bungee rope, winch and drop-in ramp have to be in your car. not to forget: a snowboard. The Völkl Jibster SQD is the perfect weapon of choice for killing street spots! Michi und Maciek swear by its Rocker Shape with a Convex Slide Base that has been specifically designed for rail riding and makes edge-catching slams a thing of the past. The True Twin Tip Shape makes the board easy to control – no matter if you take off or land switch or regular. Thanks to the specific sidewall construction with dampening, you will be able to stick any trick on rails or on hard obstacles. And when you are into one footers, the partial Grip Lacquer will provide you with the necessary grip. Furthermore the Jibster SQD has great pop meaning you can ollie any obstacle that is in your way. Now you are ready to step it up on your next urban mission!

When it comes to urban snowboarding, Helsinki is without a doubt a paradise for every snowboarder who’s into riding street rails. Not only is there an over-average number of amazing spots, but also an over-average number of amazing people who let you ride these spots. Hell, there’s even a smartphone app for ‘spots’. Just open your application and you’ll be provided with pictures, street names, in run info, security info and GPS dates for almost every spot. >>>

As said, it’s a paradise, and a perfect pick to start a road trip
like the Völkl Snowboards crew did this February.

Everything started on February 3rd
at the Völkl Ispo Party in Munich.
The crew, consisting of the Austrian
teamriders Michi Schat and Simon
Pircher caught up with their Polish
teammate & rail-machine Maciek
Dlugosz. Accompanied by the
filmer Balint Hambalko and the
photographer Patrick Steiner.
What a party night & kick-off... Fortunately the crew
managed to catch their plane the next morning, and
off they were to the capital of Finland. “During the
way from the airport to our apartment we already
saw a good load of spots, so we were quite confident
that this would be a productive trip,” recalls the crew.
Once there, they met up with Aapo, the Finnish Völkl
teamrider. Aapo was the smartphone dude, which
basically means he was the ‘come-
on-guys-I-know-another-cool-
spot’ dude. A day of snowboarding
in Helsinki looks pretty much like
this: get up at 9, breakfast, leave the
apartment around 10 or 11, build the
spot (if even necessary—sometimes
there’s already a take-off and you
just have to clean the stairs), ride,
film, take photos, get home around 5 o’ clock, eat, relax
the bones, charge batteries, and if you still have energy,
go out another time and shoot until 2 or 4 ‚o clock in the
morning. “The Finnish people are super friendly when it
comes to street snowboarding, it’s crazy!” tells Maciek,
whilst Simon adds, “Yeah, one time a guy even came up
to us and invited us to his home because ‘he also got
such a rail there.’ I think we could use some of these
guys in Austria, too!” >>>
AOn day number four, though, the bummer of the trip
happened. Michi Schatz tried a kink rail, went a little
too fast and crashed straight into the flat part of the rail.
Consequence: a broken wrist, a hospital visit and a way
too early end of the trip for Mr. Schatz. “We were pretty
bummed out about Michi’s injury, but as we visited him
at the hospital and saw that he was already in a better
mood and no operation was imperative, our motivation
came back as well and we tried to make the best out
of our last few days in Helsinki.” explains Maciek, who
was probably a little too excited at that point since
he thought driving a solid 52 in a Finnish 40 kph zone
would be a good idea.
Consequence: An expensive Finnish speeding ticket
premiere for Mr. Dlugosz.
On February 11th, the crew hopped on another plane;
this time with the destination Krakow, Poland. As they
arrived they realized pretty quickly that luck was on
their side again: as in Helsinki, it was dumping. “Not
every spot worked out as planned in Krakow, but I think
we did pretty good,” remembers Simon, with a little
winking. Besides ‘doing their job’, the guys rewarded
themselves with sightseeing (Balint was into the
architecture), eating (with this crew you even make
friends at the kebab) and… partying. Duh. They’re
snowboarders—of course they partied!

The ‘Partier of the Trip Award’ goes to Mr. Pircher, by the
way. According to Maciek and Balint it’s not possible to
get Simon angry. Well, maybe there is a way: try to tell
him that he has to go home at 4 o’ clock in the morning.
No way. After all Simon is the guy who likes nice girls
and switch frontboards.
At the end we could of course list all the acknowledge-
ments of the guys now, like how incredibly stoked they
were to be on this trip. There’d be quite a selection. But
no, let’s end this story with a quote of our filmer: “As
I came back home, my mother asked what amazing
things I’ve seen in Helsinki. I told her, ‘Mother, it was
intense. I saw about ten rails and lots of snow. What an
awesome trip!’”
At Völkl we work hard each day to make the world a little bit greener and a little better. Not only concerning our products, but we are also trying to handle our resources from within the company – we like to practice what we preach. After all, we know that there is still a lot to do in order to conserve our nature for future generations. And each of us – no matter if business or individual, shop or snowboarder – can make a contribution through our buying decision.
The awards and encouragement from the snowboard world prove that Völkl is on the right ecological track for a better future. By now, four Völkl boards already proudly bear an “eco-friendly” certification: the Cashew, Cashew Split, Yavana and Soul Surfer. These boards don´t have a plastic topsheet and their ABS sidewalls have been replaced by flexible wood. This saves 400 grams of plastic – when considering an av er-age board weight of 3 kilograms, that‘s a lot!
Eco-friendly products and materials
We also reduced the use of resin and other toxic materials to the minimum. Although the black base might look inconspicuous, it‘s pretty shrewd, as it is made of re cy-cled material. The edges, for which we used 60 % re cy-cled steel, also look stellar. Last but not least, each Völkl board gets a final “wax finish” with bio-degradable wax. p.s.: Our environmentally-acceptable products often per form better than conventional boards...
Sustainable materials & resources> Alternative topsheets instead of plastic: - Hemp/Linen topsheet (Yavana) - Wooden-veneer topsheet (Soul Surfer) - No-Topsheet Construction (Cashew, Cashew Split)> Hardwood veneer inlay instead of fiberglass (Cashew, Soul Surfer)> Wooden instead of plastic ABS sidewalls (Cashew, Cashew Split, Soul Surfer, Yavana)> Sintered recycled base (all black bases)> Edges made of recycled steel > Minimal use of resin & toxic materials> Natural Wax Finish/biodegradable

Our sustainable consciousness doesn‘t stop with the pro duction of boards. Our Legacy Streetwear line bears the GOTS symbol that guarantees the use of organic materials and socially acceptable manufacturing.

Aline Bock travelled to Japan to compete in the Tenjindaira Banked Slalom, an event based on the original Baker Banked Slalom, in Mt. Baker, USA. Here’s a short story of her experiences in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Tenjindaira 天神平
Banked Slalom on the Holy Mountain
Tenjindaira/ Mount Tanigawa is lo cated only 150 kilo
meters, as the crow flies, from Fukushima, the site of
the nuclear meltdown. The area was
and still is affected by this tragedy and
the locals told us of some of the con
sequences: Based on the fear of nuclear
radiation and con tami nated food, the
winter tourism dropped by around
twothirds in the region. But they also assured us that
everything was virtually safe, with food being delivered
from unaffected parts of the country. Never theless, we
had mixed feelings about traveling there and were never
100 % sure if we were exposed to radiation or not.
Despite the tragic situation in the country and for its
tourism, the locals are very optimistic and extremely
mo ti vated to get their old lives back.
Tenjindaira is one of the closest resorts
to Tokyo and only three hours away from
the country‘s capital. Furthermore, Mount
Tanigawa is a holy mountain for Buddhists
and has plenty of hotpools and natural
springs. We were stunned by the incredible commitment
of the organizers when we saw the extensively shaped
banked slalom for the first time.
They had built a perfect course with the same passion as they cultivate their famous zen gardens.
Beginning of March, almost exactly one year after the dev astating tsunami which was followed by a nuclear catastrophe, the second Tenjindaira Banked Slalom took place on the island of Honshu.

Reaching up to 1500 meters and equipped with six lifts,
the ski resort is small but offers versatile runs and in ter
esting faces. What really impressed us though was the
hospitality and the easy vibe of the contest – no one was
doggedly competitive or fierce.
Before the start of the race we were able to witness a
unique ceremony that I have never seen before. The
organizers of the Tenjindaira Banked Slalom had invited
three buddhist priests to hold a religious ceremony
that took al most an hour and was supposed to protect
the health of the riders and keep away bad ghosts. As
mentioned before, the monks consider the mountain
as holy and tra ditions are very important for Japanese
people! Straight after the ceremony, the contest started
and 300 riders competed in different categories for the
fastest times.
The Japanese cheered on every rider with great en thu
siasm, no matter which country he or she was from. This
created a really strong sense of community that I haven‘t
experienced very often in contest snowboarding so far.
The contest itself went pretty well for me as I rode into
third place in the lady‘s category – from 40 Japanese girls
and five foreign riders.
What I will always remember is the good
and positive vibe!
“
So far I‘m the best placed European in the short history of the Tenjindaira Banked Slalom.

2170 meters above sea level the world looks very different: the mountains are within reach, the snow comes up to your chin and the backcountry starts in front of your door – literally!
For three days Völkl teamrider
Verena Rohrer, Kristiina Nisula and
Birgit Rofner lived in a mountain
hut, in the middle of Melchsee-
Frutt, with photographer Alex
Papis. Every morning they were
spoilt by virgin slopes as far as the
eye could see. The Swiss resort of
Melchsee-Frutt is a hidden gem
when it comes to backcountry and
the girls scored run after run of
untracked, before ending the day
jibbing the park.
This is the chronology of a trip full of
powder, park and (girl)power. >>>
The girls trip
Welcome to
Paradise!
Birgit RofnerA snow taxi picked us up in the valley and brought
us to our „hut“, which wasn‘t actually a hut but the
mountain hotel Bonistock, right next to the slope.
The trip started with a once in a lifetime
experience!
They even had W-Lan; essential for a Facebook geek
like me! As it had dumped for days, the mission of
the trip was set from the beginning: powder, powder,
powder! This was kind of a challenge for me, as
normally I don‘t feel very comfortable riding powder.
However, Melchsee-Frutt is a true backcountry
paradise and instantly made me into a real powder
warrior, thanks to its endless lines and drops – I
jumped my first 8-meter cliff on the very first day!
“

Verena RohrerAfter bagging my first top 10 ranking at a 6-Star event,
the Burton European Open, in Laax, I went on to join
the Völkl Girls Trip, which was another highlight.
February couldn‘t have started better!
The most fun I had was on the Night Shoot! After dinner,
the cat dropped us off at the Fruttpark, where we had
a blast. The park was in perfect condition and I would
have loved to shoot the entire night. However we had to
save some energy for the next day, as we had planned
to participate in a photo contest organized by the local
snowboard shop. It would demand all our skills. At the
end of the second day we’d bagged amazing shots of
all categories - Backcountry, Park, Slope, Lifestyle and
‚We’re Hardcore‘ – and were crowned the lucky winners!
“
Kristiina NisulaWe couldn‘t have had it any better
on a trip – with an isolated hut in
the middle of beautiful mountains,
chest-deep powder all day long,
and terrain that offered so many
good spots that we couldn‘t hit
them all.
For me it was my first „powder
shooting“ and I really enjoyed it – not least
because of the new Yavana, which is a real wizard in the
backcountry!
“
74
Alex PapisThe Völkl Girls Trip was one of the highlights of my
season! Emi, our Swiss sales rep, came up with the idea
to skip shooting with the girls in Laax and kill two birds
with one stone by driving to Melchsee-Frutt for a photo
contest organized by the Goofy&Regular Shop. What a
great idea!
As we were staying at the Bonistock hotel on the
mountain, we could make the best of the three days.
Due to the huge amount of fresh powder we spent most
of our time in the backcountry, where the girls couldn‘t
get enough of jumping cliffs and landing in bottomless
powder.
The highlight was definitely winning the photo contest, as
nobody had really expected this!
I would like to say a huge THANKS to the girls for
their amazing performance; to the entire crew of the
Goofy&Regular Shop; to the Bonistock Hotel; the
Fruttpark Crew and to Emi, without whom the shooting
would have never been so successful. Thanks for the
great experience and the amazing times!

Clichés about snowboard pros are widespread, especially the one about them shredding the mountains in winter and chilling at the beach for the summer. But they are not always truth. Summer can mean hard work – on the one hand the pros are working out for the upcoming winter season, while on the other they can be shooting for the next catalogue. It was for the latter that a select crew of Völkl riders packed their board bags this past summer and headed to Valle Nevado, Chile.
The heart beats of the four crew members were pumping
when the plane approached Santiago de Chile: Aline
Bock, Michi “Stani” Stanschitz, Martin “Seili” Seiler
and photographer Alex Papis were straining at on their
seatbelts when they spotted the steep snow covered
summits of the Andes, that reach up to 5000 meters,
below them. But before they would conquer these
amazing mountains, the crew was to spend some time
shopping in Chile‘s capital.
Having stocked up on food and drink, they headed south,
for the mountain village of Valle Nevado. One and a half
hours later, the four friends arrived at their destination:
they had survived a 24 kilometers one-way mountain
road with more than 60 switchbacks, massive drops and
badly maintained surfaces – not recommended for those
prone to panic. Arriving at 300 meters above sea level, a
handful of hotels and the ten resort lifts welcomed them.
The terrain in Valle Nevado is fascinating and versatile.
The highest lifts reach an height of 4000 meters and
provide stunning views over the surrounding summits of
the Andes. Here there are plenty of cliffs and wind lips
that offer great possibilities for backcountry freestyle
riding. This is optimum terrain for a photo shoot and
the crew was even blessed with an extra-portion of luck
when in the middle of the trip it dumped, rewarding the
riders with twenty centimeters of the finest and driest
Andes powder: “It wouldn‘t stop spraying”, recalls Seili.
Photo shoot adventure
Upside-down season in Chile
On the first day of the trip, the crew wasn‘t that lucky:
After the riders had checked out the entire resort, they
were riding down to the vally to head back to Valle
Nevado but were told that their lift tickets were only
valid on one side of the resort. So with their boards on
their backs, the team had to hike back to their hotel
along the road. Thankfully, luck returned in the form of
a bunch of Chileans who gave them a ride in their pick-
up. Thanks bros!!!
Team trips combined with product shootings are always
a challenge for photographer Alex Papis. Besides docu-
menting the trip and the action, he also had to make sure
the board designs and the different board models got
shot in their determined terrain.

“Also the weather plays an important role to get every-
thing done in time, which is one of the reasons why we
picked Chile. It is essential to establish a list with the
shots you need before the trip and then work it off one by
one”, explains Alex who was more than happy with the
results. “Mission accomplished”! “After ten days in Valle
Nevado we had shot all the images for the catalogue and
on top we had enough stuff to fill a travel story with.”
Having worked their asses off, the team allowed them-
selves to spend the last three days at the ocean – in
Navidad, a small fishing village surrounded by plenty of
surf spots and blessed with a stunning scenery of cedar
trees and steep cliffs.
Snowboard pros’ summers really are stressful!

We were just cruising the resort when we saw this huge frontside lip. So we decided to ride to the top of the resort with the “Tres Puntas” lift and do a short hike to shred this feature. As the lip looked like a wave, we got inspired to ride it like true surfers: Stani did a huge backside spray on top of the lip and I enjoyed the barrel underneath. We needed perfect timing but managed to get the shot on the first try.
This is one of my favorite shots from this trip!
The hike was definitely worth it – thanks for the barrel, Stani!

Yavana
The picture was shot in a true backcountry play ground close to the resort. After a seven-minute hike, the terrain of-fered every thing I could have asked for as a free rider: cliffs, drops, lines and pow turns. But watch out for the powder frenzy – too many turns and your heart beat goes crazy! How ever, after this photo shoot I could hold back on tor turing myself in the gym...
Aline
For this spot I chose the Yavana.

I had already discovered this spot on the first day when the resort‘s manager Arnau had shown us around.
First we were shooting some lifestyle stuff with Alex and afterwards I was building myself a mini take off. I decided to do a Method that Alex was shooting from underneath. In the same line I later
dropped a cliff and did five turns in virgin snow. The hike back was very strenu-ous; at 3000 meters above sea level every thing takes a bit longer but it was defi - nitely worth it;
...the shot is just sick!
It was the perfect day for the Selecta!

Splitboarding is not a new trend but within the last years more and more riders have acquired a taste for it. Völkl Snow boards was into it from the start and has been producing splitboards based on the Selecta for their team riders for years.
Three years ago the Cashew Split went into production, benefitting from Völkl‘s know-how in touring skis when it comes to weight, flex and specific materials. We have asked three Völkl team riders why and in which conditions they switch from a traditional board to a split. Aline Bock, Martin Seiler and Ueli Kestenholz gave different reasons but they all agreed on one thing: Splitboarding saves you the energy that you lose while hiking and is definitely not only meant for grey-haired endurance athletes or touring ski freaks!

Japanese Splitboard Mission
Smoking mountain flanks and pungent sulphur smell joined us on our hike to the volcano‘s crater in Asahidake. Together with my Völkl team mates Aline, Keiji, Yoko and photographer Alex Papis we approached the luckily pretty sleepy Mount Asahidake with our splitboards. Standing in front of a boiling crater and feeling the enormous heat from the rising gases, as well as the rumbling from inside the earth, you become aware how small you are compared to the powers of nature. It was an impressive experience for us! Combined with the stunning view over the snowy hills of Hokkaidos, our hike was worth every single move on the splitboard. There is nothing more to say except: sick shit!”

Splitboard motivation: “Riding with my splitboard means pure freedom to me. No groomed slopes, no tracks. It is me determining the di rec-
tion. Next season I would like to explore the glaciers above 4000 meters back home in Wallis with my splitboard.”
I will never forget the splitboard tour in Japan:

Touring the Kaunertal glacierwith Aline Bock

It was an in cred ible sunny, but cold morn ing when I met with the crew at the parking lot of the Kaunertal glacier, 2750 meters above sea level. Luckily, there weren‘t any tour-ists in sight yet but unfor-tunately the lifts were still closed meaning that we had to wait for another ten minutes until we could start our tour.
From the top station we had to master some cross ings and short climbs during which we carried our boards.
At 3200 meters above sea level we reached a small leg of the glacier and had a stunning view on the surrounding summits. It was not until one more short ride down that we switched our splitboards into Hike mode and fixed the skins. The plateau started flat which was perfect to get used to the skis and to find your rhythm for the hike. We head ed towards the Southwest into moderately building terrain and soon reached the Weißseespitze at 3518 meters.
On the top it was time for a long break. Hiking at these heights is pretty strenuous but the amazing panorama was the reward for our efforts. And once our heartbeats had calmed down, we could really enjoy the view.
Our ride from the top led us towards the East, and later towards the Northeast, through the so-called “slump”, until we arrived at a distinctive rock. When we reached a steep escarpment below the huge serac passage, we let things slide, or better glide. It is pretty amazing to see glacier seracs from such a close distance. Our pho to gra-pher Daniel Zangerl and I took some time for a photo shoot in the now slushy snow, with the seracs in the background.
In the middle of the glacier valley, it got a bit tricky and we had to cross between the crevasses. If you don‘t know the area, you should definitely have a mountain guide with you and ride on the rope. We had an experienced crew and were able to enjoy the ride through the beautiful glacial terrain. After a short and narrow chute we headed towards the Fernergarten where we had parked one of our cars in the morning.

Splitboard motivation: “To me, splitboarding is a new way of exploring
the mountain. I love this feeling of being in the nature and keeping my distance from the après ski madness of bigger resorts. It is an incredible experience not having to carry your board on your back and fight your way up
the mountain with snowshoes or short skis. Thanks to the splitboard I can keep up with my friends on skis and use their tracks during the hike. What they don‘t
know is that I have way more fun on the ride down!”www.alinebock.de

Full Moon Splitboardingwith Ueli Kestenholz
Freedom from ski resorts and their operation schedules; like this cold full moon night when we went for a tour through the beautiful Rosenlaui valley. With no lights of civilization, it felt like we could touch the stars. No noise except the silent sliding of our skins over the shiny snow crystals. Our warm clothes, constant moving and the beauty of this clear night made us not only forget but enjoy the minus 20 C° temperatures.
When we arrived on top of the summit of Große Scheidegg I felt like we had emerged from a forgotten world, as we looked down the other side and saw the lights of Grindelwald and it‘s ski resort. After a warm cup of tea we switched
our boards into Ride mode and headed back down the dark side. No sick lines, simply enjoying the ride through this light, fluffy, untouched powder ...
... pure soul riding!

Now, many lines that I have spotted from the resort are in close distance. My buddies with touring skis don‘t
have to wait for me any more. Actually, it is the opposite, as Völkl‘s gear is very functional thanks to the handy Skin Pin System. But most importantly, I don‘t have
to compromise on the ride down. Having a splitboard means enjoying more powder days while the others are complaining about the hard snow and tracked slopes.”

for changing your snowboard into skis
and vice versa:
1 Before fixing the skins, clean and dry the base of your board
with the Micro Fleece integrated in the skin‘s bag.
2 Make sure that the sticky side of your skins stays dry and clean!
3 Don‘t immediately remove the skins from the two halves
of the board when switching from Hike to Ride mode (respectively from skis to snowboard). This prevents the board from slipping away from you in a moment of distraction.
4 When you put your board on the edge, it will be easier for
you to push the bindings over the pucks from above.
5 Never forget to bring your crampons and put them on in
time to guarantee a safe hike in steep or icy terrain.

the backcountry is yours!
Splitboarding is pure freedom, but one you have to earn! Those who hike up the mountain with a split board, instead of simply taking the lift, will be rewarded with a way more intense feeling while riding down untracked powder fields – no matter if you are somewhere in the backcountry searching for new, unknown runs or after a short hike at the top station looking for a perfect kicker spot off piste. The Cashew Split is the ideal buddy for the backcountry thanks to its Powder Rocker shape and Convex Powder Base that both guarantee maximum float in the powder. Furthermore, the ultra-light No-Topsheet Construction and the complete Carbon lower beam save you energy during the hike. This and the wooden sidewalls avoid needless plastic, thus providing the Cashew Split, not only with a lot of high-tech, but also a green consciousness. New this season: The Cashew Split is now also available in a shorter version (155 cm).
Our eco-friendly backcountry freestyle split board Cashew is your ticket into the
backcountry!
Only a few grabs and you can divide the two board parts, or respectively put them together again using the Voilé Split Kit Bindings Fixation. Then you only have to mount the skins using the Skin Pin System and switch on your LVS – go shred! Given a favorable avalanche report of course...

We are going to let you in on a secret :)
Your riding will feel much better with the right bindings! That‘s why we try to progress and improve our binding models each year, adjusting them even
more to the individual rider‘s needs – no matter if looking for a stiffer model with direct power
transmission, or a smoother model that perfectly adapts to the board‘s flex.
>>>
>>> Besides the performance, you should also look for the comfort!
That‘s what our popular Fastec Binding System is there for: It makes
strapping in and out a walk in the park! The bindings get adjusted
only once to the boots and the riding style, from then on the system offers
you perfect hold. The handling is super easy and with one hand only – without sitting down and tightening
your bindings each time:
“Just step in, lift up the
highback, close the
Auto-Release Buckle and let‘s shred.”

Your product choice can change the world. Make a small contribution to the environment, fair trade and your own health!
GOTS (GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STANDARD) & ORGANIC CERTIFICATION
GOTS is the leading worldwide textile processing standard for organic fibers, guaranteeing fabrics that are harmless to health and have socially acceptable production. Raw materials may not be genetically modified; they may only originate from organic cultivation and be processed using organic methods. Compulsory labor, child labor, abuse and discrimination are forbidden, while fair salaries, freedom of assembly and labor protection are the minimum social criteria considered by the GOTS, who organize inspections on a regular basis.
For the first time, a symbol stands for worldwide standardized requirements that guarantee the ecological quality of fabrics: from the cultivation of fibers to eco-friendly and socially acceptable
manufacturing as well as standardized labeling.

LOG
13/14
The best thing about snowboarding? It‘s a great way to spend your winter! Nothing else you do brings
the same level of intensity and fun. There is nothing better than going to the mountain and just ride and
forget about whatever crap is going on in your life for a few hours!
