STEAMDay is an afternoon filled with courses that focus on our STEAM theme, offered by over 30 staff at our school! You will have choice and voice in which class you get to take. Choose 5 classes that you are interested in, and you will be scheduled into one of your favorites!

Create a zen doodle bulletin board in the vocal hallway representing McKinley STEAM Academy. Create Zen doodle hand prints! Enjoy calming music that inspires creativity, artistic exploration, and relaxation.

Explore chemistry with a twist--of a candy cane! Create crystal candy cane and gingerbread ornaments for decoration. Examine and

experiment how candy canes dissolve in different liquids, and more!

An escape room is a live adventure in which players work together to problem solve a series of puzzles, clues, and

riddles to complete an assigned mission. Players use critical thinking skills with a set amount of time to accomplish their task and reach their goal of “escaping” through successful

mission completion.

Calling all soccer enthusiasts! Come join a fast-paced game in the large gym honing in on your soccer skills. This activity will involve a fun and competitive way to practice soccer skills while raising your heart rate in the process. This activitywill give students the opportunityto play multiple games a soccerin a short amount of time.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to decorate beautiful holiday cookies? This course will teach you a few creative tips and artistic tricks to create your own edible masterpieces! Come with an appetite!

like to run a coffee shop? Have you wondered what the actual steps were, and where to start? How about the science behind roasting coffee beans? We will be taking a trip down to Dash Coffee to learn, straight from the source, how to run a coffee shop from idea to everyday operations.

what it takes to have a career in cosmetology, and get your nails done!

Mathematics is often seen as being boring and never used later in life, BUT if you are into sports, you will be using statistics (aka Math) to make judgements and decisions about your teams and

players. Come and find out how sports analysts use math everyday, compete in a fantasy draft, and learn how you could

potentially have a career in math and sports!

Come engineer your own mini-gingerbread houses - design, plan, construct using your imagination and every sweet treat you can imagine! Frosting, sprinkles, candies will be the construction materials of the day... sweet!

Do you you enjoy fabrics, cords, and other textiles? From paracord survival bracelets, to sports bracelets, to colorful friendship bracelets, we will use YouTube as our guide to find out about several styles of bracelet making and you’ll create one of our own!

He's a mean one, Mr. Grinch. But does he really have the chops to figure out how to move the goods out of Whoville before the morning light? We'll take a look at mathematical models, including straight lines and quadratic equations, and try to find out.

We will start the class with a rigorous yoga workout. After we feel calm, centered, and maybe a little exhausted, we will create some paintings based on our movements. This will be a relaxing and creative experience.

This class will experience printing and production in a much larger scale than we can at school and with our Cricut. Take a trip to Sign Language and see how the business prints and creates signs and materials. When we come back to school we will use the Cricut to create a simple product for ourselves.

We will head over the History Center to discover little known facts about our home, Cedar Rapids. We will get to do some fun station rotations to learn about how and who helped to build Cedar Rapids into the city we know and love. We will also sneak a visit in to see Grant Wood's Studio to complete our adventures of discovery about the place we call home.

evidence, teamwork, fingerprint analysis and chromatography (ink testing) be able to solve the

Take a trip to SOKO Outfitters, try to “send” some routes on the climbing wall, and learn

to how and what to pack for a hike. Afterwards, head back to McKinley to learn about calorie burn during outdoor activities

and make (and eat) trail mix!

Whether you're into making jewelry, something useful and practical, or an object d'art, this course will give you an opportunity to make something new out of deconstructed musical instruments. We will use parts from non-functional instruments to create who-knows-what! The possibilities are endless! Bring your imagination and let's see what treasures we make :)

Sign up if you wish to take a cooking class from an expert chef at the Kirkwood Culinary Kitchen at NewBo City Market. We will learn the in's & out's of the kitchen, how to make a recipe, and taste our own creations!

Have you ever thought about cheerleading on an all-star, HS or college team? Learn from cheerleaders and coaches about what it takes to be a cheerleader, both as an athlete and a leader, including the communication and athletic skills used in the sport. You'll get to learn basic physics of stunting, how to hit motions and jumps, and material like cheers and dances.

Students will have the opportunity to create stop motion animation using a variety of different materials. Students will generate storyboards to create seconds long movies using 100s of still photos played at a rapid pace. The movies could be created with legos, paper, found object and an unlimited amount of imaginative things!

This community service project is for students who have already started making scarves this fall. We will finish up all the scarves we can so that they can be delivered to second graders at JSA before Christmas. You will need the knitting materials that have been checked out to you!
