FRANCO TOSI MECCANICA - A COMPANY THAT HAS
ALWAYS BEEN A REFERENCE STANDARD IN THE POW-
ER GENERATION INDUSTRY - IS DEDICATED TO SERVE
YOUR THERMAL AND HYDRO POWER GENERATION
NEEDS WITH THE QUALITY AND ATTENTION YOU EXPECT
AND DESERVE. SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE INDUS-
TRIAL AGE THE NAME FRANCO TOSI WAS CONSIDERED
A LEADER FOR RELIABLE TECHNOLOGY AND LEADING
EDGE DEVELOPMENT.
After a period of significant work abroad, particularly in
Germany, in 1876 the young engineer Franco Tosi was
called to Legnano to manage “Cantoni Krumm & C.”,
a steam engine and boiler manufacturer, which
thanks to Tosi’s work remarkably expanded its opera-
tions. Franco Tosi, an industrial pioneer, devoted him-
self to study and build reciprocating steam engines
that in a few years gained a reputation both in Italy
and internationally.
THE FIRST “TOSI ENGINE”, WITH A POWER OF 3 HP,
DATES BACK TO 1877 AND IN 1881 THE FIRST 40
TO 50 HP RYDER STEAM ENGINE WAS PRODUCED.
Tosi’s entrepreneurial vision and undisputed design
skills found their accomplishment with the advent of
the first power plants. His steam engines definitely
conquered both the domestic and the international
markets. In a few years Franco Tosi became a share-
holder and then, in 1884, the sole owner of a pio-
neer company in the energy sector that has borne his
name since 1881.
A name that still today is renowned all over the world.
Besides having excellent technical skills and being an
eminent industrialist, Franco Tosi was also a model
citizen who carried out outstanding philanthropic
work through his health insurance, social security and
professional training initiatives. An entrepreneurial
style whose signs are still visible and present today
in Legnano.
The industrial development of the Company “Franco
Tosi” followed the ups and downs of the European his-
tory in the early twentieth century, through two world
wars, the post-war recovery and the 1960s economic
boom including a strong internationalisation of the
Company’s markets.

FTM steam turbines the best fitting to every market
range, from industrial to pure power generation.
SOME OF THEM:
• Back Pressure or Condensing Configuration
• Integral steam chest / Separated valve assemblies
(directly connected to cylinders or with pipe
connections)
• High back pressure LSB families
up to 5 m2 annular exhaust area
• LSB up to 9 m2 annular exhaust area (50 Hz).
• Fully 3D stator and rotor reaction blading for the
highest level blade path efficiency
• Any kind of controlled extraction
or induction / bleeding
• Skid supplied solutions (industrial), any
direction exhaust casings and high recovery and
efficiency axial ones

FTM has developed its product range through a stand-
ardized modular approach, in order to meet any cus-
tomer’s need with the same top-class reliability, effi-
ciency and flexibility.
The following table summarizes the typical technical
features of FTM steam turbines.
Type of machines described above are typical ar-
rangement of different standard modules which
can be combined in several possible solutions.
For example, the HIC / DL turbine is made by one HI
module (High pressure and Intermediate pressure sec-
tions combined in the same cylinder) + one DL mod-
ule (Double flow Low pressure cylinder). On the other
hand, a backpressure turbine with reheat can be ob-
tained by utilizing only an HI module.
Note: grid frequency 50/60Hz for all models except DHI/DL-ML (50Hz)

Single flow, same flow direction for the entire bladed
path. Full arc admission with reaction blades as well as
control stage version are available. Very simple me-
chanical scheme to meet the highest performance and
reliability standards of a wide and diversified market,
from industrial applications to geothermal needs. Small
nominal power turbines of this type are usually high
speed ones, with a gearbox for coupling with the gen-
erator.

Single flow, HP section flow in opposite direction to IP
and LP flow, single cylinder.
This turbine standard has been developed to answer
to needs of our customers both in the industrial and
utility sector. Full arc, fully reaction HP section version
is available as the control stage version, to fit any oper-
ational configuration.
Machine of this configuration may be realized with or
without reheat starting from the smallest sizes.

Two cylinders, single LP cylinder. This two cylinder con-
figuration, made by a high pressure AS module plus a
single flow (SL) or double flow low pressure turbine
(DL), covers with state of the art performance a broad
range of applications: typical are combined cycles, solar
and biomass with a high degree of flexibility in steam
conditions provided by different versions of the same
basic standard. Sliding pressure operations with full arc
admission is typical although control stage versions can
be supplied as well. This arrangement allows to choose
the optimal speed for each machine section, also set-
ting one turbine module on each side of the generator.

Configuration with two or three cylinders.
The first one is a combined HP and IP section, while the
second (and third, when needed) one is a double flow
low pressure module.
Usually these turbines have a reheat admission, and
a full arc HP admission when used in combined cycle
applications. This type of turbine is appreciated both by
utility and industrial customers when specific needs of
compactness are present in the medium power range.

Turbines applied in large power range, sub critical or
super critical steam conditions. Leading edge technol-
ogy, both in mechanical and aerodynamic design en-
sures the best efficiency and reliability, in USC configu-
rations if requested for coal / fossil fired plants and in
sub critical one for combined cycles as well. Full arc
admission and full reaction blading. This configuration
is made by an AS module for the High Pressure Turbine
plus one single (MS) or double flow (MD) intermediate
pressure module plus one (DL) or more (ML) double
flow Low Pressure Elements.
