Chapter 2: Sources of History
2. Sources of History
Let’s Revise1. Sources of History: i. It is nothing but the recovered inscriptions, customs and traditions, folk art, folk
literature, historical documents, etc. that help us understand our history. ii. The main three types of sources of history are material sources, written sources
and oral sources. 2. Material Sources: The sources of history like artefacts, articles, monuments or their ruins are called as
material sources of history. 3. Written Sources: i. Initially, humans used only signs and symbols to record their thoughts and ideas. ii. During the stone‐age, people expressed their emotions and recorded their
thoughts in the form of paintings on rocks. It was only after thousands of years thatman learnt the art of writing.
iii. Man first wrote on potsherds, unbaked bricks or birch (bhuja) tree bark usingpointed objects. With experience and knowledge, he began to write in differentways and record the events that took place around him.
iv. Even the accounts of the proceedings of royal courts were written systematically. v. The orders of rulers, judicial decisions, donations, etc. were all inscribed on stone
or copper‐plates. vi. Later several forms of literature developed, like books on religious and social
subjects, plays, poetry, travelogues and scientific works. vii. Such literatures which help us to understand the history of different periods are
known as the written sources of history. 4. Oral Sources: i. Literature like owis, folk songs, folk tales, etc. is passed from one generation to the
other by word of mouth. ii. This literature is not in the written form and its authors are mostly unknown. iii. Such literature which is preserved by oral tradition is known as ‘oral sources of
history’. 5. Sources of Ancient Indian History: i. Archaeological excavations help us to know about the Stone age period of Indian
History. However, no written records are available as scripts had not beendeveloped at that time.
ii. Information about the ancient period from 1500 BCE onwards can be derived fromthe Vedic literature.
iii. As the ancient Indians had developed the technique of memorizing and reciting theVedas, they were not in the written form in the beginning. However, they werewritten down later and the post Vedic literature forms an important source ofancient Indian history.
