FASHIONISTA

After working on NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week and recently winning Best Style Blog at the North East Blogger Awards, I’m lucky to be one of the first to know about new businesses opening in the city.

There are new offerings popping up all the time, from independent boutique Endless Dream to a new Neals Yard. Lush in intu Eldon Square has just had a fab makeover too!

Michael Kors will be arriving in Toon any minute now and Monument Mall has become a shopaholic’s dream thanks to Hugo Boss and Rox.

For the beauty-obsessed, the award-winning hair salon Junkyard has opened on Dean Street; the new Thorns salon, by the City Library is ideal for some pampering; and House of Savannah has relocated to Old Eldon Square.

The city is a shopping paradise, with everything from independent shops in High Bridge Quarter and the Grainger Market, to top designer fashion in Cruise and Fenwick. Plus there’s permanent late night shopping thanks to Alive After Five. It’s all very damaging to my bank account!

YO-YEOA major retrospective of the fascinating work of Jonathan Yeo, one of the world’s leading and most innovative portrait artists, is about to go on show at the Laing Art Gallery.

Subjects represented in Yeo’s paradoxically abstract/realist style include actors Kevin Spacey and Helena Bonham Carter (pictured), artist Damien Hirst, and actor and national treasure Stephen Fry. ALIVE AFTER

Newcastle’s food scene has grown with the extra 7.9m hungry visitors to Toon after 5pm since 2010.

From pizzerias, fast food joints and the odd curry house, the food offering has grown in number and diversity to include Indian street food kitchen Dabbawal, pizza heaven Herb Garden, Asian-inspired Electric East, Carluccio’s, Browns, and Jamie’s. A revamp of the food offering at intu Eldon Square is on its way, and Prezzo and Lola Jeans are among the new names about to open in the city, drawn by the huge success of Alive After Five and NE1’s Newcastle Restaurant Week.

FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT…

GREAT TASTE

STAYING ALIVE…AFTER FIVE!It’s been four years since NE1 Ltd - the company which champions all that is great about Newcastle city centre - brought us Alive After Five, and what a difference it’s made!

Until then, the Toon’s party city reputation was in evidence, but there was a ‘dead zone’ between 5pm and 8pm; the lull between city workers and shoppers going home and the nightlife beginning.

NE1 campaigned for retailers to remain open until 8pm on weekdays and 7pm on Saturdays and worked with the city council to ensure thousands of car park spaces were free after 5pm, and Alive After Five was born. An instant success, the strategy brings thousands of people into the city during that one-time dead zone and has attracted a host of attractions including new retailers, restaurants, coffee shops and a huge variety of things to do.

The strategy, which is held up as an example around the world and which guarantees free parking after 5pm in seven multi-storey car parks until at least March 30, 2019, has revolutionised Newcastle. Here’s more… www.getintonewcastle.co.uk/alive-after-five

ALIVE AFTER FIVE HOURS

With free parking and more to do than just go for a drink after 5pm, Alive After Five has brought an extra 7.9m visitors to the city after 5pm since its launch in 2010

When the scheme was launched in 2010 it was hoped it would provide a multi-million pound boost to city centre business. Four years on, the estimated value of Alive After Five is estimated to be £350m

£The change in the city’s retailers and restaurants has been huge, but what if you’re looking for something a bit quirkier to fill your evening?.

Way back in 2010 there were a few places, but now the opportunities are endless. We recommend checking out Lane7 for a night of bowling (the food ain’t bad either), or head down to City Library, which is open until 8pm, or the Lit & Phil, to enjoy one of the regular evening events. Or, if you’re in need of a laugh, check out

comedy club The Stand. We couldn’t believe it only opened in October 2011 having welcomed some of the best comics in the country and seen some of the region’s best take their first steps.

INTERNATIONAL APPEAL

Alive After Five makes visitors and incomers from around the world feel right at home. With more shops open late, the streets are buzzing, just like they are in New York, Paris, Bangkok, and Milan, and that’s great for first-time visitors. Newcastle’s universities and city centre-based businesses also like the more cosmopolitan and attractive city centre, as do their employees and students.

IN MY VIEW

It is 5.10pm on Wednesday 19 October 2010. The place; a cold, wet, dark, deserted Newcastle city centre. Too barren even for tumbleweed, the only movement on the street is the lone council cleansing buggy gently flicking waste paper into the air while leaving behind its customary trail of dribble. On Grey Street a single car is parked outside the empty Bank of Scotland building, its driver fumbling for change for the meter under the one dim, flickering streetlamp. Everyone else has gone home.Jump to 7.15pm on Tuesday 14 October 2014. We’re in town. Faces, accents and languages from seven continents drift between cocktail lounge and comedy club, steak house and theatre. My wife, and the rest of the world, is spending a fortune being pampered in Fenwick again. The kids take forever to decide whether it’s to be Italian, Latin, Thai or Modern British with bowling, and I’m starving. We park for free in the multi-storey, which is just as well as there’s no chance of a space on Grey Street between that VW Beetle and that orange McLaren.

And even that dreadful busker with the bagpipes has gone! Where else would you want to be?www.getintonewcastle.co.uk

ALIVE AFTER

FIVE

THE BEST THING ABOUT ALIVE AFTER FIVE

PIONEERING NEWCASTLEIn October 2010, Newcastle was the first city to roll out the Alive After Five scheme. Since then it has won high praise from fellow business improvement districts and been held up as an example of a great way to bring a city centre to life.

Free car parking after 5pm at:• Grainger Town Multi-Storey, Waterloo Square• Eldon Garden Multi-Storey, Percy Street• Eldon Square Multi-Storey, Percy Street • Quayside Multi-Storey, City Road• Manors Multi-Storey, City Road• Oxford Street Multi-Storey• Dean Street Multi-Storeywww.getintonewcastle. co.uk/alive-after-five

SEAN BULLICK, CHIEF EXECUTIVE NE1 LTD

NICK MCLELLAN, 24, TOWN PLANNER, GOSFORTH

Alive After Five is really convenient for me because I don’t normally shop on the weekends; with a full-time job it can

sometimes be difficult to do it after work. Having the shops open later means I don’t have to rush around so much.

RAYMOND FINN, 64, RETIRED, NEWCASTLE

Having free car parking is really convenient, especially since some of the car parks are quite expensive. It

encourages more people to come down and spend more time in the city.

ELAINE RUTTER, 68, RETIRED, NEWCASTLE

For me it’s about the car parking; normally I would just take the Metro or come down on the bus but having the free car parking

encourages me to bring the car and spend some time down here in the evenings.

TAKE ME TO THE RIVERThe massive boost in trade and visitors has had a big impact on the Quayside.

Sandhill is now buzzing thanks to the arrival of Popolo, Hop and Cleaver, The Redhouse, and Tiger Hornsby.

Local boy Kenny Atkinson (pictured) has also set up shop with House of Tides, and judging by the scaffolding and the number of people in hard hats walking around, there’s a lot more to come on the newly regenerated Quayside.

The rise in the number of people visiting the city and the boost to trade has ushered in a host of new retailers, from designer labels like Hugo Boss to luxury jeweller Rox - both of which have taken up residence in Monument Mall.

While 2012 saw a 2.9% decline in footfall in towns and cities across the UK, it is estimated that Northumberland Street saw a 7% rise. The city’s retailers now report that between 15-20% of their income is made between 5pm and 8pm.

RUBY WAXKYLIE

RUBY WAXKYLIE

KISS ME, KYLIEThe word phenomenon is used far too often these days, yet in the case of Kylie Minogue - pint-sized popster, adopted national treasure, and the most popular waxwork at Madame Tussaud’s - it is absolutely deserved.

Her current world tour - which comes a staggering 26 years after her first single - is evidence of her amazing longevity, enthusiastic stage presence and fabulous costume changes which on this tour see her progress through 80s disco queen, 50s housewife, and PVC policewoman (yup), to Disney princess.

All the hits are here, and the staging is magnificently big, brash and beautiful. Here’s more…

When she came to the UK for her first meeting with the 80s mass-produced music machine that was Stock, Aitken and Waterman they forgot she was coming so they left her waiting for 40 minutes while they wrote I Should be so Lucky for her. The rest is history. Kylie’s 1990 hit Better the Devil you Know is played at 12.30am every Sunday at the G-A-Y club in London, where she has the status of a goddess.

INXS frontman Michael Hutchence said that his hobby was ‘corrupting Kylie’ when they were going out together. He wrote Suicide Blonde about her.

Her middle name is Ann, her dad Ron is an accountant, her mum Carol is a former dancer from Wales, and there is a life-size bronze statue of her in her home city, Melbourne, obviously.

In the 90s sitcom Men Behaving Badly, the lead characters Gary and Tony were madly in love with Kylie.

Kylie opened her Fever Tour in 2002 with the Sound of Music line ‘the hills are alive with the sound of music’ before rising up through the stage floor dressed as a cyborg. We kid you not.

She was appointed an OBE in 2008 for services to music. She lives in London and plays Scrabble regularly with her friend, the über intellectual author Salman Rushdie.

Kylie has duetted with a variety of singing partners, including Jason Donovan (clean-cut Kylie phase), Nick Cave (indie Kylie phase), Coldplay (rock Kylie phase), and Kermit (slightly disturbing phase).

Kylie’s records used to epitomise naff pop, yet these days she is managed by Jay-Z’s outfit Roc Nation, which also manages such luminaries of cool as Pharrell Williams, Will.i.am, and Calvin Harris. Well done, that girl!

Chris Ramsey, stand-up comic and one of the stars of the BBC2 sitcom Hebburn, is heading home to Newcastle to finish his UK tour, The Most Dangerous Man on Saturday Morning Television. The tour title is a reference to the red card he got from Sky Sports’ Soccer AM programme in 2012 when a colourful on-camera comment got him blacklisted from the show. So what happened on Soccer AM? “It was daft, but I’ve got three tours out of it. I’m not edgy, even though I’m the only person to be banned from Soccer AM. I just got carried away.”

Would you go back on Soccer Am then? “If they asked I would, but friends who’ve been on it have been told not to mention me.”

How much are you looking forward to coming home?“I can’t wait. We always

make Newcastle the last date of the tour so we can have a piss-up afterwards. It’s always the best night of any run.”

What’s next? “I’ve got a TV project after the tour. It’s not another sitcom, but I’m open to doing another one. Hebburn got two seasons and a Christmas special,

which is amazing for a sitcom.

As always, what comes after a tour

is…another tour.”

What’s it like touring with fellow Geordie

Carl Hutchinson? “Like being on a lad’s holiday, but

you’re not allowed to drink all day.”

What do you take on tour with you (apart from Carl)? “First, I vacuum seal Carl and put him in the boot. I take a camera to film the tour diary, and I couldn’t live without the portable PlayStation 4 and telly combo.”

Were you always destined to be a stand-up comedian? “If someone told me when I was young that being a stand-up comedian was a real job, I would have said yes. Until a few years ago I still didn’t realise it was a real job. Then I got into a few of

the clubs in Newcastle and everything went from there.”
