"DisturbingthePeace" to Join the

Governor’s Derby Celebration

By Nicky Hughes

You don‘t have to go to Louisville to see a thoroughbred race horse on Derby

Day, 2013. ―Disturbingthepeace,‖ a retired thoroughbred from the Old Friends

Horse Retirement Farm near Georgetown will be in downtown Frankfort as part

of the Governor‘s Derby Celebration. This will be the third year that the Capital

City Museum, a City of Frankfort Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic

Sites facility, has brought a horse to Kentucky‘s capital city for this event.

Disturbingthepeace will be in a portable stall next to the Capital City Museum at

325 Ann Street throughout this event. The Governor‘s Derby Celebration will

begin at 9AM and continue until 1PM. Visitors are invited to get to know this

beautiful animal ―up close and personal‖ on the greatest day of horse-racing in

America. Previous thoroughbred appearances at the museum have been especial-

ly popular with children.

Disturbingthepeace retired in 2004. During his racing career he achieved eight

wins, four seconds, and four thirds in twenty-four races. Outstanding wins were

at the Triple End Breeders‘ Cup Invitational, the Bing Crosby Breeders‘ Cup

Handicap, and the Pat O‘Brien Handicap. Old Friends president and founder

Michael Blowen has said, ―We‘re honored to have Disturbingthepeace at Old

Friends. He was a tough race horse and was owned by writer-producer David

Milch. Disturbingthepeace is poorly named because he‘s very quiet and kind.‖

Milch worked on many successful TV shows including Hill Street Blues, LA

Law, and Deadwood.

The Capital City Museum will be open to the public all day. Some of its exhibits

have been renovated over the winter, and there will be plenty of new things to

see. There is no charge for visiting Disturbingthepeace or for touring the muse-

um. However, donations to help the Old Friends farm fulfill its mission of provid-

ing a safe haven for retired thoroughbred horses will be most sincerely appreciat-

ed. A plentiful supply of Frankfort Heritage Press books and Capital City Muse-

um ―Lost Frankfort‖ Christmas tree ornaments will be available for purchase at

the museum.

Buffalo Trace Distillery Breaks Ground for

New Experimental Warehouse Facility

By April Cole, Editor/Owner/Event Photographer

On a near perfect Spring day in April, Buffalo Trace broke ground on a new ex-

perimental barrel warehouse facility. Guests began to arrive on Friday, April 5,

2013 in the afternoon to gather under a large tent marking where the warehouse

will stand. The new facility will allow the master distillers to take Buffalo Trace

to it's quest for the "perfect bourbon" even further than ever before.

Some of the distinguished guests on hand were Elmer T. Lee, one of three living

master distillers whom have a bourbon named after them; Alice Blanton, niece of

Col. Albert Bacon Blanton; Freddie Johnson, third generation employee of Buf-

falo Trace and tour guide extraordinaire; Frankfort Mayor Bill May; Former

Governor and current State Senator Julian Carroll; Mark Brown, President and

C.E.O. of the Sazerac Company, parent company of Buffalo Trace; Harlen

Wheatley, resident Master Distiller and Kentucky Senator Damon Thayer. Busi-

ness members from the Frankfort community were also on hand to support this

occasion.

Warehouse X will be the first new building the distillery has seen added to their

130-acre property in more than 60 years. Built of brick and concrete block, with

skylights added as well, this is not your ordinary distillery warehouse. Measuring

only 30 feet by 50 feet, Warehouse X will hold about 150 barrels of spirits. The

structure will consist of four separate and independently operating chambers, so

testing can be done in order to determine the best way to age a barrel. An open-

air rack with barrels in a breezeway under a roof, will allow for some of the bar-

rels to age while being exposed to the natural elements and the four seasons that

Kentucky offers up.

The distillery will be experimenting with natural light, temperatures, airflow and

humidity - testing one variable at a time. Studies will last at least two years on

each element.

Warehouse X is scheduled to be completed by August of

2013. A blog has been started to track the progress of the

construction project. It will be updated often and can be

found at www.experimentalwarehouse.com. When it is

completed, Buffalo Trace will offer visitors the opportunity to visit the warehouse

and learn about the current experiment going on inside.

The whiskeys that will age inside Warehouse X will be bottled and labeled under

the Experimental Collection line. But don't hold your breath or go stand in line at

your local liquor store to purchase a bottle. It takes a minimum of 8 years after

the warehouse is completed to even bottle anything from Warehouse X!

“Hearth Cooking for Kids” at Liberty Hall a

Great Success!

By Jennifer Koach, Education & Volunteer Coordinator for Liberty

Hall Historic Site

On April 27, six children came to Liberty Hall Historic Site‘s kitchen for a

―Hearth Cooking for Kids‖ class. Participants ranged in age from 6 to 12 years

old. Led by Jennifer Koach, Education & Volunteer Coordinator for Liberty Hall

Historic Site, the children recreated recipes drawn from 18th century cookbooks.

The children prepared traditional Southern cornbread, Scotch eggs (hardboiled

eggs wrapped in sausage and fried golden brown), and baked apples with raisins

and cinnamon for dessert. And with the help of a guest churner (one of the par-

ents) the children turned cream into delicious butter, perfect for the cornbread! At

the end of the class, participants sat down and enjoyed the meal they created, and

received a cookbook to take home, so that they can prepare the recipes (but prob-

ably not on an open fire!). Liberty Hall Historic Site plans to offer this program

each spring, with additional classes added if there is demand.

In addition to being fun and learning about history, this program was part of the

Lets Move! Museum and Gardens initiative, which enlists museums and public

gardens in the hope of ending childhood obesity in America using interactive

exhibits, outdoor spaces, gar-

dens and programs that encour-

age families to eat healthy

foods and increase physical

activity. The meal the children

prepared was well-rounded,

including a grain (cornbread),

protein (Scotch eggs), and fruit

(baked apples).

For more information on the

programs for all ages at Liberty

Hall Historic Site, visit

www.libertyhall.org, or visit us

The Governor’s Office and Downtown

Frankfort Derby Day Celebration

Reprinted From Ace Weekly, Lexington

Saturday in the State Capitol

of Frankfort is always a Derby

Tradition.

Now in its third year, Gover-

nor Beshear and his wife,

Jane, have taken the Gover-

nor‘s Derby breakfast and

turned it into The Governor‘s

Downtown Derby Celebra-

tion, Frankfort‘s community-

wide celebration of the Derby

on Broadway with local busi-

nesses and museums opening

their doors, local restaurants serving Derby favorites, activities for chil-

dren, Kentucky artisans, as well as Kentucky music on the Jim Beam

stage.

First Lady Jane Beshear says of the move downtown, ―It‘s reinvigorat-

ed. Engaging local businesses and community members allows the

people of Frankfort to truly decide what the Governor‘s Downtown

Derby Celebration is about, and we support the community in any

way we can. The celebration also brings in many Kentuckians from

outside of Frankfort and holding the event downtown gives the com-

munity a chance to showcase its many wonderful stores, restaurants

and historical sites in a festive way.‖ Mrs. Beshear says: ―To me, one

of the best parts of having this event downtown, it‘s more family-

oriented than it was previously.‖ Activities for children include The

YMCA ‗Derby Dash‘ for ages 2 to 12 on Broadway, stick horse races

across the Old State Capitol Lawn, Derby hat making, inflatables, and

Salato Wildlife Sanctuary will bring furry and feathered friends. At

Broadway Clay children can throw their own pots in their studio for

$5. Melanie Van Houten, owner of Josephine Sculpture Park, has a

children‘s art activity planned in the Meeting Room of Completely

Kentucky, also on Broadway. The Kentucky Historical Society spon-

sors two of the popular activities, the stick horse races across the Old

State Capitol lawn and the Derby Hat Making. Julia Curry, Special

Events Manager for the Kentucky Historical Society says ―As many

adults as children want to make Derby hats!‖ She also commented

that they make 500-800 paper Derby hats during the celebration.

Along with the activities on the Old State Capital lawn, the Thomas B.

Walker History Center, the Kentucky Military Museum, and the Old

State Capital will be open and free to visitors during the Downtown

Derby Celebration as well. The Capital City Museum will bring a re-

tired racing thoroughbred to visit. Disturbingthepeace will be on Ann

Street next to the Capital City Museum and has pony rides for kids

too. On a similar vein, the Kentucky Horse Park will offer carriage

rides down Main Street in Frankfort on Derby Day.

―Pedal for the Posies‖

Dubbed ―the second most exciting 2 minutes in sports,‖ by Stuart Har-

rod, owner of Folk Bike Recyclery on Lewis Street, this bike race ap-

peals to the kids and the kid at heart. Stuart and Brittain Skinner, Ex-

ecutive Director of Downtown Frankfort Inc., for local businesses to

get in the limelight and to get people downtown. ―It‘s a fun social

event that is more of a spectacle than serious‖ says Stuart. Pedal for

the Posies involves local Frankfort business representatives riding very

small kids‘ bikes supplied by Stuart and Folk Bike ReCyclery to the

participants who then ride these bikes down Broadway for 1.25 miles,

the same length as the Derby. Stuart says ―It‘s really taken off; people

decorate their bikes and dress in costume to celebrate.‖ The winner

receives a trophy made of bicycle parts. Only in its second year, Pedal

for the Posies is a community favorite. ―Pedal for the Posies is the best

event of the Governor‘s Downtown Derby Celebration,‖ says Rachael

Peake, owner of Capital Cellars. Melanie Van Houten, manager of

Completely Kentucky concurs, ―It‘s a lot of fun down here.‖

Downtown Frankfort—the Community

Downtown Frankfort has many shops and restaurants that open their

doors and welcomes everyone into their businesses with creating spe-

cial projects, sales, food, and demonstrations. At Completely Ken-

tucky, Kentucky artisans will be on hand to demonstrate jewelry mak-

ing and William Rogers from Harrodsburg will carve wood. On the

lawn of the Old State Capital, picnic tables get decorated with Derby

themes; Jim Beam sponsors the music venue where local musicians

play live music; Kentucky artisans demonstrate their work. Carlos Ce-

ballos, assistant manager at Serafini comments ―it‘s lively in down-

town Frankfort with music playing, people eating at Derby tables. It‘s

just part of the Kentucky Derby tradition.‖ Leah Duvall, also assistant

manager for Serafini, loves ―all the Southern Bells dressed up walking

by.‖ Lizz Taylor, owner of Poor Richard‘s Books, loves the RJ Cor-

man Kentucky Derby Dinner Train: ―The passengers are dressed in

their Derby garb and it‘s fun to people watch.‖ Audrey Hammond, co-

owner of Broadway Clay, also favors the train, ―Something so roman-

tic about it. I‘m a sentimental native, ― she laughs.

Brittain Skinner, Executive Director of Downtown Frankfort, Inc.

says: ―Derby Day is when all eyes are on Kentucky. It‘s our day to

shine. Whatever your Derby tradition–whether you‘re headed to the

track in your finery, celebrating the race at a party, or even just cheer-

ing the ponies from your couch–the Governor‘s Downtown Derby

Celebration is the perfect way to kick off Derby Day and to be part of

our Commonwealth‘s moment in the spotlight.‖

Red Head Custom Cakes Officially

Opens It's Doors With a Ribbon Cutting

By April Cole, Editor/Owner/Event Photographer

With one of the largest crowds gathered for any Frankfort Area Chamber

of Commerce Ribbon Cutting I've seen in 5 years of ribbon cutting cover-

age, Rhonda Stevens officially opened up the doors to her Red Head Cus-

tom Cakes store front on Broadway in downtown Frankfort. Frankfort

Mayor Bill May, Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce President Myron

Moore as well as several Chamber business members and customers

showed for the ribbon cutting. Local radio station Froggy 104.7 was also

on hand for live broadcasts from the location.

Red Head Custom Cakes new store front made a splash onto Frankfort's

downtown scene just last month and has already made a huge impact in

the community! Capital Living even wrote about the first experience with

the new shop in a blog post on March 26, 2013 (see article "New Store-

front in Downtown Frankfort Delivers Smiles"). When the "Red Head's"

business exploded with the introduction of a van to go mobile with her

cupcakes, Rhonda knew she had to take it to another level. As she told

me last month, "it was either invest thousands of dollars in renovating my

garage to accommodate the growing demand of the mobile business, or

do something else". Rhonda tapped into the pulse of the downtown

Frankfort community by leasing out the old Broadway location of the Re-

becca Ruth Candy store. So far, it seems to be a great fit for the down-

town community!

When she first opened her doors last month, she counted on the help of

family and friends to keep the doors opened. As she came to the realiza-

tion that this new part of her business was exploding, she began to hire

help. She now employs 6 people! It's not surprising to learn that, on her

official Grand Opening Day, over 1600 cupcakes went out the door!!! 700

mini cupcakes were baked up and given out as samples. And over 900

cupcakes were actually sold! By 3:30 pm, there were no cupcakes left to

stock and every cupcake that she had on hand for that day was in the

showcases! Several "Cupcake of the Day" flavors made a one day appear-

ance ALL

AT

ONCE!

And only

a select

few regu-

lar flavors

remained at that time. Among some of the flavors to make an appearance

for the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting were Champagne, Lemon,

Oreo Cookie, Pretzel Salad, Neapolitan, Banana Pudding, Funfetti, Cher-

ry Cordial, Turtle Cheesecake, Reece Peanut Butter Cup, Snickers and

Peanut Butter and Jelly. The staple flavors were back with Chocolate with

Chocolate, Yellow with Chocolate Fudge, Wedding White with White,

Chocolate with White, Red Velvet, Coconut, French Toast and Strawber-

ry. Red Head Custom Cakes will feature a flavor of the day each and eve-

ry day. Since every cupcake is made with love and is a piece of art in it-

self, stop by often to find out what she comes up with next! I hear some

fun flavors will be featured for Derby!!!

Red Head Custom Cakes new store front is opened 6 days a week with

the hours listed below. Or, as Rhonda puts it, "until the blinds close".

Pony Car Round-Up Wrap-Up By Nicky Hughes

The 8th Annual Kentucky Pony Car Round-Up flour-ished last Saturday despite the day-long threat of rain – the great enemy of car shows. This annual gathering of sporty automobiles, hosted by the Frankfort Mus-tangs Club, was held at Juniper Hills Park on Louisville

Road. The City of Frankfort’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Sites always sponsors the event. Tom Fugate, president of the Mustangs

Club, said that eighty-six cars were registered and received commemorative plaques, but he believed around 100 cars to have actually participated. This is an only slightly smaller turn-out than expected in perfect weather.

The ominous weather conditions did keep most of the older cars at home in their garages. Nevertheless, Mustangs from 1965 to the 2014 model year were present. There was a sampling of Camaros, Challengers, and other makes. A relatively rare AMC Javelin put in an appearance too.

As usual, participants came from all across central Kentucky and bordering states. This year, the Bluegrass Mustang Club – based in Lexington – won the trophy for largest car club representation. This broke the streak held since the first Round-Up by the Falls City Mustang Club, many of the members of which are from southern Indiana. The award for longest distance travelled to the show went to Melinda Chaffin of Culloden, West Virginia.

The President’s Choice Award, given to an outstanding automobile selected by the president of the Frankfort Mustangs Club, went to Josh Demarcus and his 2003 Mustang Cobra. Mr. Demarcus has made upgrading the car a very serious hobby since his return from military active duty in Afghanistan. The Sponsor’s Award, presented by the co-director of the Frankfort Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Sites, went to Edwin Wilson and his 2010 Mustang GT. The car’s “IM BLUE” vanity license plate spoke volumes about the striking appearance of this lovingly enhanced machine.

The 9th Annual Kentucky Pony-Car Round-Up will take place on the last Sat-urday of April, 2014 – again at Juniper Hill Park. Admirers of this class of au-tos do not have to wait until then to see lots of Mustangs. They should watch for a cruise by scores of Mustangs from Keeneland Racetrack in Lexington to Frankfort and back as a lead-in to the Keeneland Concourse de Elegance car show on this July 19.

Staxx BBQ Hosts the Latest Chamber of Commerce Lunch Mob to a Growing Crowd

By April Cole, Editor/Owner/ Event Photographer

Staxx BBQ was the latest Chamber member to host the Chamber Lunch

Mob on Thursday, April 11, 2013. The Frankfort Area Chamber of Com-merce Lunch Mob, a program developed and backed by the Frankfort Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, is a new program to promote Chamber members businesses. Staxx BBQ offered a lunch special to Chamber members attending the event. And NO ONE had an excuse to leave hungry! Chamber members were encouraged to converge at lunch time and net-work with one another as well. It's estimated that 75 or so Chamber members attended the latest Lunch Mob, making it the best one yet!

Be An Archaeologist at Fort Hill

By Nicky Hughes

Have you ever wanted to be an archaeologist? Or maybe just to

get your hands dirty giving it a try? You will have a chance to do

just that at the Leslie Morris Park on Fort Hill this summer.

The City of Frankfort‘s Department of Parks, Recreation and His-

toric Sites, which manages the Fort Hill Park, has arranged for the

Kentucky Archaeological Survey to conduct an examination of

the site in June. While there have been archaeological surveys

and digs on Fort Hill before, this will be the first project to include

the entire 125 acres of the City-owned park. The main purpose of

the survey is to identify areas of historical importance so that con-

tinued development work at the park does not do damage to valu-

able cultural assets.

Park personnel hope to learn more than that, however. They hope

to find the long-lost location of the Union Army camp and a war-

time barracks building known to have been on the hill – somewhere

outside the well-documented earthwork forts. The survey may lo-

cate other small Civil War era earthworks thought to have been

erected during that war but long since hidden by forest and under-

growth. Information about the residences, barns, and dairy farm

that were on Fort Hill in the decades after the Civil War would also

be valuable in interpreting the park to visitors. While little is

known about Native American occupants of the hill, traces of their

presence ―are bound to be there,‖ according to an archaeologist as-

sociated with the project.

The lead archaeologist will be Jay

Stottman. Nationally recognized

for his encouragement of public

participation in archaeological

activities, Stottman will be active-

ly recruiting volunteers to help

with the project. Work will in-

clude recording surface features

like fences and building founda-

tions and digging scores of small

shovel probe holes. Soil removed

from these holes will be sifted in

search of man-made objects.

Some areas will be surveyed with

metal detectors as well.

After completion of the work in

the field, objects discovered dur-

ing the project will be processed at

the University of Kentucky. After UK scientists have learned all

they can from these artifacts, they will be returned to the custody of

the Capital City Museum in Frankfort.

Noted Kentucky archaeologist Gwen Henderson has said that the

Kentucky Archaeological Survey was created to do projects just

like this that serve a civic need, enrich knowledge about local histo-

ry, and allow for public participation. Persons interested in hands-

on participation in the project this June should call John Downs at

the Capital City Museum at 502-696-0607.

oration with a supportive group of professional colleagues. My TV shows are soaring in the U.S. and around the world,‖ Miller said. A ―vast part of the credit goes directly to Toastmasters.‖

pared and impromptu speeches, evaluating each other, and performing various roles during weekly meetings.

Frankfort High School Lady

Panthers Sign Three of Their

Seniors to College Scholar-

ships

A proud group of parents, teachers, members of the community and teammates gathered at the

Frankfort High School auditorium April 24, to

celebrate the accomplishments of Lady Panther senior basketball players Shanae Brown, Shauntae

Brown, and Kiana Russell as the three signed let-

ters of intent to play basketball on the college lev-

el.

Shanae Brown and Shauntae Brown will be at-tending Roan State in Harriman, Tennessee. They chose the school after considering several other

scholarship offers, because they were impressed

with the players and coaches and looked forward

to the opportunity to continue to play together. Certainly, this last factor will make things easier

for the girls‘ mother, Natasha Hunter, who has

always been an enthusiastic supporter of the girls‘ many activities.

In high school, the duo compiled an impressive

list of accomplishments, playing on the varsity

level for six years, Shauntae at point guard and

Shanae at a variety of positions, according to the

needs of her team. Shanae ranks as one of the top ten all time scorers at Frankfort High and first in

rebounds and steals. From 2011-2013, she was

chosen to the All County team, twice to the All A Regional Tournament team, the 41st District

Tournament team, the 2013 Bluffton Holiday

Classic All Tournament team, the McLean Coun-

ty All Tournament team and the Grant County All Tournament team. Shauntae ranks second on

the Frankfort High all time scoring list, is the

school leader in assists and is second in steals. She was chosen for the All Region Team from 2011-

2013 and as County Player of the Year from 2011-

2013. In addition, she has been selected three

times to the All A Regional Tournament team and was this years‘ Tournament MVP. She was

also MVP of the Bluffton Holiday Classic and a

member of the 41st District All Tournament team, the Grant County All Tournament Team, and the

McLean County All Tournament team. Both sis-

ters also lettered in track and softball.

In college, Shauntae intends to pursue a degree in sports medicine, while Shanae intends to enter the

field of fashion design.

Kiana Russell will stay slightly closer to home, having signed with Cambellsville University.

Kiana, a shooting guard for the Lady Panthers,

played on the varsity level all four years of high

school. She is second in the schools‘ all time three point percentage and was chose for the 41st Dis-

trict All Tournament team. Kiana chose Camp-

bellsville in large party because she felt the school focused on student success, an important consid-

eration for both Kiana and her mother, Keasha

Redding. The players and coaches were support-

ive of each other and Kiana expects to feel right at home on her new team and to continue to devel-

op, both as a basketball player and a student. She

intends to major in sports medicine.

The celebration of these three young ladies‘ col-lege commitments signifies what Lady Panthers

Coach Deron Norman hopes will be a new era in Frankfort High basketball, where the advance-

ment of players into the college ranks becomes a

frequent occurrence. As a sign that the others are expected to follow the excellent examples set by

Shanae, Shauntae and Kiana, not only their team-

mates, but all of the members of the middle school

program also attended the ceremony. Despite the fact

that their new ambitions will

take them out of Frankfort, all three young ladies have

left behind a legacy of which

they, their school and their

community can be proud.

Commonwealth Credit Union’s

Community “Shred” Day Was A HUGE Success! By Cindy Block, CCU

On Friday, April 26, 2013, from 10 am to 2 pm, Commonwealth Credit Union held it’s Com-munity “Shred” Day

Commonwealth Credit Union, Shred-It, Frankfort City Police and the Franklin County Sheriff Department teamed up to sponsor a community-wide opportunity for individuals to shred their personal confidential documents for FREE!

Over 360 families brought their personal financial documents to be shredded on site by Shred-It.

Not only did they bring items for shredding, our community also supported L.I.F.E.House for Animals (a no euthanasia pet adoption facility dedicated to finding loving homes for pets in need) by packing a vehicle with supplies for the “4 legged” guests. Guest items ranged from beds, toys, treats, food, etc. for the dogs and cats that consider L.I.F.E.House their temporary home until they are adopted by a loving “human” family. Those that at-tended the event also were generous financially – over $240 was collected in monetary donations.

Local Athlete selected for Red Cross/NAIA Collegiate Leadership Program Scholarship By Paula Rutledge

In January 2013, Savannah Brooke Stigers of Frankfort, a sophomore nursing student at Midway College, became one of 14 student-athletes selected for the Red Cross/NAIA Colle-giate Leadership Program. Brooke will begin with an all-expense paid two-week internship of training at Red Cross National Headquarters in Washington, DC. She will acquire first-hand coaching, mentoring and professional leadership training presented by senior Red Cross leadership and NAIA representatives. Participants will earn a stipend while they learn to organize successful campus blood drives, actively participate on a leadership board and take part in diversity and cultural competency training. Student-athletes receive a $2,000 scholarship provided by the Red Cross and State Farm Insurance.

The American Red Cross, the NAIA and State Farm Insurance established the innovative program in 2007, which is intended to: exemplify core values of the NAIA Champions of Character program; inspire a new generation of Red Cross volunteers and leaders; pro-mote diversity on Red Cross Blood Region boards of directors; foster leadership opportuni-

ties; champion a philanthropic cause; and impact local communities. "This program is in-credibly exciting as it demonstrates the value of successful and meaningful partnerships and celebrates the impact of youth leadership." stated Paula Rutledge with the American Red Cross in Frankfort.

Brooke volunteered for several summers as a youth in the “Volunteen” program at Frank-fort Regional Medical Center where she worked in the Obstetrics and Emergency Depart-ments. This partnership program between Frankfort Regional Medical Center and the local American Red Cross Chapter has seen a number of the students go on to pursue medical careers. “I am so excited that Brooke has earned this well-deserved honor, she was an outstanding teen volunteer. Smart and capable, Brooke also demonstrated great under-standing and compassion for her patients and teammates. I know she will excel in all of her endeavors and can’t wait to see where her career takes her. Congratulations to Brooke, from Frankfort Regional. We are very proud of you.” stated Diane Dominick, Patient Care Advocate and Volunteer/H2U Director

About the American Red Cross: The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disas-ters; provides nearly 40% of the nation's blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides interna-tional humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is

a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volun-teers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission For more information, please visit www.redcross.org or follow us on Facebook.

Cove Spring Stream Project Revitalizes Park By Nicky Hughes

Mother Nature is getting some help at Cove Spring Park. The City of Frankfort’s Depart-ment of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Sites is conducting a stream restoration project there.

Cove Spring and Penitentiary Branch, which flow through the park, were trenched out many years ago so that water could pass through them quickly. They were, in effect, converted into drainage ditches. That rapidly flowing water created bad habitat for fish and streamside plants and animals.

The current project is re-structuring the streams in ways that will slow the flow of water and increase the surface area of the water. Bank erosion and sediment pollution will be reduced. Pool habitats will be created. A much friendlier environment for plants and animals will result.

As a result of the project, Cove Spring Park will become friendlier for people too. A trail and access points will make the streams more accessible. Inter-pretive signs explaining stream features will be installed. Reforest Frankfort has already planted new trees in the project area. Nick Ozburn, manager of this project for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Wetland and Stream Mitigation Program, said, “We hope that schools will use the project as an outdoor classroom.”

Funding for the project came from Fish and Wildlife’s Wetland and Stream Mitigation Program which encourages construction projects that affect streams to help finance efforts like this. “This system works really well be-cause a road project can be built as needed, and we can use funds from the impact to improve streams like Cove Spring that will be enjoyed by the public. This is where funding for the Cove Spring project came from,” said Ozburn.

Ozburn added that, “The City of Frankfort has been outstanding to work with. City Parks knew that Cove Spring would be the perfect place for a restoration project, and have helped tremendously in implementing the project.”

Project construction should be completed in June. Planting native plants will follow next year, and work to eliminate invasive plants will continue for another five years.

For more information about this project, email [email protected].
