Condensed Aerosol Fire Suppression Systems
Presented to FPE March 2014
Aerosol Technology - How it Works - Codes & Standards
Definition per NFPA 2010 Standard on Aerosol Fire-Extinguishing Systems
Solid particles > 10 Microns will tend to settle to form residue Solid particles < 10 Microns will tend to remain suspended in air
Particle Median Size Comparisons: Purple-K Dry Chemical Agent ~ 20 Microns High Pressure Watermist Droplet ~ 50 to 120 Microns Aerosol Agent < 1- 2 Microns
RELEVANT STANDARDS: NFPA: NFPA 2010 Standard on Aerosol Fire-Extinguishing Systems (2010 ed.) NFPA 70 National Electrical Code NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code
CEN/ISO: CEN/TR 15276-1 Fixed Firefighting Systems Condensed Aerosol ISO 15779 Condensed Aerosol Fire Extinguishing Systems
AGENCIES: UL 2775 Fixed Condensed Aerosol Extinguishing System Units CSIRO ActvFire
Aerosol fire suppression systems are designed as: Engineered total flooding fire detection and fixed suppression systems Self-activating or remote (manual) operated fixed fire extinguishers c/w high
temperature fire detection
AEROSOL SYSTEM
WHAT IT IS Total flooding system for enclosed spaces
Listed extinguishant for Class A (surface), B,
C fire hazards
Aerosol with ultra-fine solid particles mixed with and propelled by low pressure N2 inert gas
Fire detection & extinguishing system (with FACP or stand-alone)
Environmentally friendly o zero ODP, ~zero GWP, zero ALT
EPA SNAP listed as a halon 1301
replacement for normally unoccupied areas
WHAT IT IS NOT NOT NFPA 17 Dry chemical system (>20m)
NOT NFPA 2001 Clean agent system
NOT HFC halocarbon gas
NOT suffocating gas
NOT pressurized storage gas system with
distribution piping network
NOT refillable
NOT listed for Class D fires
NOT toxic when designed as a total flooding system

Aerosol Fire Suppression Technology
Aerosol Agent & Inert Gas
Actuator Signal (electric, thermal,
or manual)
How a Generator Works 1) Signal energizes Actuator 2) Agent Compound reacts with Oxidation Block, generating 3) Aerosol agent and Inert Gas pass through Cooling Block, and out generator Exit Ports 4) Stat-X Agent suspension fills hazard area, suppressing fire
Fire Tetrahedron
Primary Extinguishing Mechanism: Aerosol free radicals react with flame free radicals and interfering with chemical reactions taking place in the fire
Fire Triangle
Huge population of suspended aerosol particles < 2m with very large total surface area to absorb heat

How Aerosol Agents Suppresses Fire 1) Aerosol Agent & Inert Gas Suspension discharge fills hazard volume (particle size 1-2 micron) 2) Potassium Radicals from Aerosol Agent mix with free radicals generated by combustion 3) Potassium chemically joins with Combustion Free Radicals, interrupting the fires reaction pathway and creating Stable Molecules 4) The interrupted fire reaction pathway can no longer sustain combustion and the fire is suppressed.
Stable Molecules
Condensed aerosol agent is ultra-fine particles propelled by self-generated inert gas

Agent Effectiveness: More Efficient
21
US Naval Research Lab performance fire tests show that aerosol fire suppression systems can outperform equivalent water mist systems in extinguishment time for all sizes of fires and at a fraction of the system weight.
Cost-Effective to Own No agent level checks
or container weighing No disassembly and
vessel hydro-testing Hermetically sealed,
tough stainless steel Stable, long-lived agent
(10+ years) Keep spares handy to
Restore system fast after fire is suppressed
No waiting for resupply when at sea or remote sites
