Summary of May 2011 Meeting(“reading of the minutes”) (10 pages)
• Overall Recommendations/Strategy– Marketing and Outreach are essential, to management as well as technical audiences– Support agile development, freely publicly available specifications and XML schema
files. Extensibility is important. – Design guideline: QIF is data models, not process – don’t constrain system
architecture– Traceability requirements: this scenario needs more precision.– Pursue pilot projects for validation, outreach– Requirement: Provide links to manufacturing processes (traceability)– Requirement: FAI AS 9102a– Introduced Use Case Tool and several tables– Business case is important, technically and for traction– Priority: QMPlanning, QMResults, QMStatistics, QMExecution, Measurement
Resource Information. – DMSC should support conformance testing of solutions
Dimensional Measurement Standards Consortium (DMSC) 10
Some QIF Strategy Issues
• So far we have had a small working group (but motivated, energetic, and good looking)
• How can we harness existing resources to make progress, and make sure QIF thrives?
• How can we increase our resources?• Will pilot projects accelerate testing, interest,
proliferation? What should their priority be?
Dimensional Measurement Standards Consortium (DMSC) 11
Summary of May 2011 Meeting• QCDirectives
– recommendation: the QCDirectives WG is the liaison to AP 242 committee and all other CAD and quality related standards groups.
– concerned with influencing/assessing upstream data flow– NIST and PDES "What do metrology system customers
and suppliers need in AP 242 ed 2 for interoperable Design to Inspection Planning information?
– recommendation: we should Interact/monitor with special interest group Tolmod
Dimensional Measurement Standards Consortium (DMSC) 12
Summary of May 2011 Meeting
• QMPlans– Specify what to inspect, not how, but….– Allow for specifying specific resources in Plans– Should MResourceI and QMRules be part of
QMP?– Rules: Lot sampling plan vs. point sampling plan– Optional ordering of steps
Dimensional Measurement Standards Consortium (DMSC) 13
Summary of May 2011 meeting
• QM Statistics– Includes QMD space
Dimensional Measurement Standards Consortium (DMSC) 14
Summary of May 2011 Meeting
• QMExecution– QMExecution language would be a replacement
for DMIS input, not output– Is XML a good match for format?– Is human readable important? (“so 80s”)– Do not start on QME immediately. When QMP
and QMR take off, then that would be the time to hit QME development hard. Pursuing QME now, would be costly.
Dimensional Measurement Standards Consortium (DMSC) 15
Summary of May 2011 Meeting
• QMResults– Pursue liaison with MTConnect, including
measurement results, and potential for CMM utilization (OEE).
– Requirement: traceability to inspection and manufacturing processes
– Liaison/harmonization with ANSI Y14.45?
Dimensional Measurement Standards Consortium (DMSC) 16
Summary of May 2011 Meeting
• Start new QM Resources WG– possible rename of the specification is QMAssets.– Will MRI describe CMMs, stylii length, ball
diameters, probe wrists, caliper max length?–
Dimensional Measurement Standards Consortium (DMSC) 17
Summary of May 2011 Meeting• Start new QMRules WG (lower priority)
– are measurement rules defined in the QMPlanning realm? Have we adequately defined "measurement rules"?
– Functional requirements: QIF must specify measurement rules used for e.g., cast surfaces, sheet metal, machined surfaces, printed wiring boards.
– Scope: e.g., number of sample points, lot sampling policies
– Specify DME resources in priority order – Note: there is an ISO standard for measurement rules.

Status of Outreach• Informational marketing and technical credibility
– Pilot Projects and Data Examples– IMTS 2012 or other trade show Demo– Audience: Users and Solution vendors
• Standards Liaison– DMIS harmonization– ANSI Y14.5– MTConnect – International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) – Model Based Engineering

Bill, I think the compelling story must be “interoperability”. I think the concern has to be that it must look different than two years ago, e.g. more participation. I think this is much more important than showing connections to other standards. How QIF melds with other standards can be discussion items during the presentation and/or part of the information on the booth signs, but doesn’t need to be part of the live demo. The attached is something that I sent to Bob after Tuesday’s meeting. I feel that the next step, before the June meeting, is to determine who vendors W, X, Y and Z are. Note this drawing has eight data flow paths --- interoperability! Joe
