Status of HIV & AIDS in the Northern Cape

The Provincial HIV prevalence rate among pregnant women decreased slightly
from 16.5 in 2007 to 16.2 in 2008. This change in trend suggest the beginning of
stabilization of the epidemic after a peak of 18.5 in 2005

HIV Prevalence by District
Although Frances Baard has shown consistent high prevalence rates compared
to other districts, infection rates have started shown decreasing trends. There has
been a significant decrease in prevalence in Namakwa from 7.3 in 2007 to 2.2 in
2008

Age Distribution of HIV Prevalence
Women in the age group 25 – 29 are the worst affected with prevalence rates of up to 33%.
HIV prevalence among younger women (15 – 19) has shown significant decrease in the three years

Syphilis prevalence remains the highest in the country. The observed increase
