  • The next big step: Mongstad CHP and refinery CCS

Why is this a big step?o Cleaning flue gases is less mature and

more costly compared to removingmore costly compared to removing CO2 from natural gas

Two plants planned:o Technology centre - StatoilHydro

f i d ioperator for execution and operationo Full scale CCS – possible for both

    CHP and refineryFinancing:go Technology centre:

o Develop technologies for CO2 capture capable of wide national and international deployment

o Reduce cost and technical, environmental and financial risks related to large scale CO2 captureg 2 p

o Test, verify and demonstrate CO2 capture technology owned and marketed by Vendorsand marketed by Vendors

o Encourage the development of technology and vendors

  • Key advantages of TCM test facility

T d l l 3/h f flo Testing at industrial scale, i.e. 60,000 Sm3/h of flue gaso Tied-in with two industrial flue gas sources (one resembles coal

flue gas)flue gas)o Have high degree of flexibility and features for future testing

    and modificationso Resembles large-scale design

TCM can test effects that depend on scale with a higher accuracy and with a larger variety of flue gasses

    www.tcmda.no

  • Functional Requirements

o The captured CO2 product shall meet the following requirements at battery limit:• Minimum CO2 purity 99.9%• Acceptable quality for discharge to air

b fo The solution shall have suitable scale up properties to a full-scale planto Limited lifespan for test facilities (minimum 5 years of operation)

    • Design life for technologies: 10 years• D i lif f i f t t 25• Design life for infrastructure: 25 years

o 10-20% design margins in flue gas conditioning systems to test limitations in CO2capture units

o 50% turndown in CO2 capture plantso 50% turndown in CO2 capture plantso Space allocation for future installation of flue gas mixero Provisions for future process modificationso The Amine and Carbonate units may be operated independent of each other

  • Key messages

European CO2 Technology Centre Mongstad will be an important driving force in the qualification of large-scale capture technology and development of improved technologydevelopment of improved technology

TCM is approved and under construction

TCM is based on two industrial scale post combustion CO2 capture technologies, each with access to two real industrial flue gases

TCM’s plants will have a large degree of flexibility which gives many opportunities for the test program
