  • Waste collection

    • 35 – 90%• outdated vehicles, their number insufficient• frequency depends on population density

  • Landfills

    • Only one municipality is part of a regional waste diposal system

    • Rest of the landfills are not sanitary, do not comply with EU standards

  • Regional waste disposal systems

    Numerous obstacles:

    • Disagreement on the main points of cooperation

    • Location, size of the area covered• Financial mechanisms

  • Illegal dumping

    • inadequate waste infrastructure leads to illegal dumping

    • initiatives for cleaning up• local solutions

  • Recycling, reuse, composting, incineration

    • Examples of some local initiatives

    • Only a handful of companies dealing with treatment of secundary raw materials

  • Waste collection fee

    • 2 to 3.50 EUR/household• Majority pays per m2

    • Unit pricing rare• Does not cover operational costs• Ethical pricing? Ethical collection system?

  • Drina and waste

    • Non-sanitary landfills, illegal dumpsites in close poximity of Drina

    • 30% of floating waste ends up in riverbed

    • Damages hydropower dams

    • Inter-state problem
