Always mindful of the growing number of children in need of our advocacy, CASA had a lot to celebrate this year! Philip Lynch is remarkably our first advocate to reach a 20-year anniversary. His commitment in that time is nothing short of extraordinary. Three more CASA advocates are scheduled to hit that mark in the next few years. Over 200 people in Lane County volunteered thousands of hours to protect children. Their work is not easy. These cases are heart-wrenching and highly complex. And yet, they come back year after year – case after case – to pro- tect more. CASA advocates are the backbone of all that we do. More CASA advocates are our biggest need – always. Some advocates think about this opportunity for many years before committing. It is a unique and critical role, and we are so grateful for the efforts of every single CASA advocate. We recognize and respect that CASA advocacy is not for everyone. There are many ways to contribute to CASA and you will find examples of this on each page of this report. You will also read about some extraordinary acts of kindness. We cannot thank enough Tad and Jeri Scharpf, Devon Allen, Pharoah Brown, and so many more supporters of all ages and backgrounds, for their creative and thoughtful support of CASA! When I stop and think about those combined efforts, I am in awe. We could not do this work – work that is vital to over 400 children in our midst – without the strong foundation of our community.

And yet, they come back year after year – case after case – to pro-tect more.

Thank you!Board , staff, and CASA Jaylynn Milstein wear blue for Wear Blue Lane County, April 2017

ways to GIVE An Example:Tad and Jeri Scharpf gave a major gift to CASA by utilizing a Qualified Charitable Distribution from their IRA. Jeri was a CASA for six years, retiring in 2016. When it came time to draw on their retirement funds, they decided this was the most beneficial way to make their donation. We are thankful to both Tad and Jeri for their time, support, and financial contributions! The Impact:Funds were used in conjunction with Harriet Smith’s bequeath to add a Program Manager to CASA’s staff, invest in our Capital Account and new technology, support CASA retention, and more.Other Ways to Give:Stocks | Donor Advised Funds | Planned Gifts (bequeaths, estates, etc.) | AssetsSpeak to your financial planner today about what options may be beneficial for you!

did you KNOW?Advocates commit to volunteering for the duration of their assigned child(ren)’s case, which last, on average, two years. This means that while caseworkers, schools, homes, counselors, et cetera, might change, their CASA remains the one consistent thread throughout their case.

a CASA MILESTONE: Philip Lynch celebrates 20 yearsPhilip Lynch is celebrating his 20th anniversary this year, making him CASA of Lane County’s longest-standing CASA volunteer! Philip began his work with CASA as one of the organization’s first board members. Since becoming a CASA in 1997, he has advocated for a total of 18 children on 11 different cases and is currently advocating for a 10-year old boy.

Philip worked as a school teacher for the 4J school district for most of his career. Upon retirement, he joined the ranks of only twenty-some CASA volunteers in Lane County at the time. Philip is married with two grown children and three grandsons, one of whom they raised for a period of time. When he is not volunteering, he enjoys photography and gardening and is an avid bike rider.

Here is a glimpse into Philip’s 20 years as a CASA --

Two Decades with CASA Philip was surprised when his Program Supervisor, Alysha, told him of this milestone. He says he does not count the time spent but simply moves forward each day.

Why Court Appointed Special Advocates? Philip first heard about CASA from his friend, Judge Ann Aiken, who thought he would enjoy supporting CASA’s mission.

Memorable Moments The parents on Philip’s first case were very young and lacked parenting skills. During his visits, Philip got on the floor and played with the children. Soon, the dad began to follow suit, also getting on the floor to interact with his kids. Philip says it was rewarding to see that bond form.

He also fondly remembers his first CASA supervisor who coinciden-tally was one of his past 2nd grade students. She took exceptional pleasure in using a red pencil to mark up his court reports.

What Makes a Good CASA? Realistic expectations and empathy. He says CASAs must understand their limita-tions and be at peace knowing that, while they do not have the final say, their influence and recommendations are significant to the case and the children’s future. He also says that a CASA must be comfortable with a variety of people and able to show respect towards all people. Philip shares, “It’s important people know you are not there to judge them and you are not better than them; you are there to help them”.

CASA of Lane County is grateful for Philip’s commitment and dedication to helping abused and neglected chil-dren in our community! If you see him, please join us in commending him on this impressive milestone.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) provides a powerful voice for abused and neglected children by advocating within the court system to help navigate them into safe and permanent homes as quickly as possible.our MISSION

Jeri and Tad Scharpf

Philip Lynch

Always mindful of the growing number of children in need of our advocacy, CASA had a lot to celebrate this year! Philip Lynch is remarkably our first advocate to reach a 20-year anniversary. His commitment in that time is nothing short of extraordinary. Three more CASA advocates are scheduled to hit that mark in the next few years.

Over 200 people in Lane County volunteered thousands of hours to protect children. Their work is not easy. These cases are heart-wrenching and highly complex. And yet, they come back year after year – case after case – to pro-tect more.

Thank you!Board , staff, and CASA Jaylynn Milstein wear blue for Wear Blue Lane County, April 2017
