States of Matter! 8th Grade Science January 27-28, 2014 Ms. McKinley
What are “states” of matter??
¡ Matter is made of atoms and molecules that are ALWAYS moving.
¡ The motion of the atoms and molecules determine the STATE of matter (also called phase of matter).
¡ 4 different “states”
The particles in all MATTER move like this!! In random motion
4 states of matter
Solid
Liquid
Gas Plasma
We won’t study this one…
Solids
¡ FIXED shape
¡ FIXED volume
¡ Strong attractive forces keep the atoms close together
¡ Atoms vibrate in all directions
This is how the atoms in a SOLID are arranged. DRAW THIS J
Liquids ¡ No fixed shape. ¡ Takes the shape of the
container
¡ FIXED volume
¡ Atoms are close together
¡ Attractive forces are weaker
¡ Atoms are free to slide past neighboring atoms
This is how the atoms in a LIQUID are arranged. DRAW THIS J
Gases ¡ No fixed shape
¡ No fixed volume ¡ Expands to fill volume of
container
¡ Atoms are very far apart
¡ Very weak attractive forces between atoms
¡ Atoms move freely and collide into each other frequently
This is how the atoms in a GAS are arranged. DRAW THIS J
