Chapter 3.1

PPT Notes

I. SolidsSolid: State of matter where the substance has a definite shape and definite volume.Definite = Unchanging, well defined

A. Particles in a SolidKC: The particles in a solid are packed close together and can only vibrate.

B. Types of Solids1. Crystalline Solids: Particles form a

regular, repeating pattern. Ex. Table salt, sugar

Table Salt Diamond

2. Amorphous Solids: Particles do not form a regular, repeating pattern.Ex. Plastics, rubber, glass

II. LiquidsLiquid: The state of matter that has a definite volume, but an indefinite shape.

“in” = the opposite of Same volume, different shapes

A. Particles in a LiquidKC: The particles in a liquid are packed close together and can slide past each other..

B. Properties of LiquidsSurface Tension: A force that pulls the particles together in a liquid. TPS: How many drops of water can fit on a penny?

Viscosity: The resistance of a liquid to flow. Ex. High viscosity = Cold honey Low viscosity = Water, hot honey

III. GasesGas: The state of matter that has an indefinite volume and an indefinite shape.

A. Particles in a GasKC: The particles in a gas are far apart and collide frequently.
