SENTIMENT BEHIND LUZON LANDINGS bull

That amphibious invasion alumni -0f the USNATB stormed ashore to spearhead landings onLuzon on the road to Manila is assured as the news comes daily of the successshyful operations there

Described as the largest amphibious operations ever undertaken and larger by perhaps 50 percent in number of personnel engaged than th-0se on Leyte or Normandy their success attests anew the competence and thoroughness of training for amphibious operations such as goes on day and night here at the USNATB and other such bases on both Atlantic and Pacific shores middot

In sentiment no offensive operation has meant m-0re to redblooded Americans than the return to the Philippines where the American flag was hauled down after gallant stands at Bataan and Corregiqor in the early days of the war That alumni from this Base are in on this bik show is an ~special cause for all hands here to be proud of the Amphibshyious Force

ACTIVITIES BRING IN NEW YEAR HERE

Weekend Appropriately BusyOne Ai Base

The New Year was rung in apshypropriately at USNATB with the Welfare and Recreation Departshyment providing a full week-end of lively entertainment

The celebratii started off with a bang on Friday night when Jimmy Palmers famous orchestra played to three packed houses in Gulbranson Hall coming here dishyrect from an engagement in Miami Featured with the Palmer band were the Three Irresistibles a trio of young ladies who received a royal welcome because of their singing and loveliness

On SundaY afternoon New Years Eve two more packed housshyes saw the fine array of Miami theatre and nightclub talent give a better show than is usually seen in the New York theaters and nightclubs Marilyn Mack NBC singing star sang several top tunes of the day Lt Stanley Fishshyer of the Army Air Forces an acshycomplished harmonica virtuoso sco1middoted a hit with his version of the Sbullt Louis Blues Direct from the Olympic Theater were the acrobatic dancers the Martinshygales the runner-up to Miss Amshyerica last year Miss Florida of 1943 added a lot df feminine beauty to the show as well as enshytertainment for she is a singer and dancer and holds the world championship as a drum majorshyette Master of ceimiddotemonies for the show was Tiny Olsen a ton of fun who does imitations of Hollyshywood stars along with his singing and comedy

Building up to the ringing out of the old and the arrival of the New Year Deanna Durbins new film Cant Help Singing was shown at Gulbranson Hall in the evening

At 2300 the auditorium was packed for a gala midnight show Every man was given a paper hat noise makers and horns Before the midnight hour contests for the 1best barber shop quartet_ and the funniest New Years 1middotesolutions were conducted Then promptly at midnight the noise began followed by a movie of cartoons and short features including the Three Stooges

This brought to a close a full program of holiday entertainment which is believed to have been equal to or better than at other Navy bases this Christmas and New Year season

I CHAPLAINS CORNER By Chaphin Francis J Fleming

The power of the Holy Name of Jesus Our Divine Lord Himself has taught on many occasions In my Name they shall cast out devils If you ask the Father anything in my Name He will give it to you Blessed are they who suffer persecution for my Names sake The beauty and middotpower of the Name of Jesus St Paul brings out in his Epistle to the Phillipshyians Therefore God has bestowed upon Him the Nam that as above every Name so that in the Name of Jesus every knee should bend of those in heaven on earth and above the earth T)ie early Chrisshytians had such a tremendous reshyspect for the sacred Name of Jeshysus that they gave up their lives rather than desecrate it

One would have to be stone deaf not to be grimly impressed with this fact that times have changed It seems many men use that Name now for the most trivial of reasons and for a purpose entirely foreign to that for which it was given to us Whereas we have been specishyfically instructed in Sacred Scripshyture as to the manner in which that Name should be used the name is now frequently used as a vehicle to display disgust

If a man is in a bridge game and someone else takes the majority of the tricks or if a man is in a poker game and someone else rakes in the blue chips he frequently misplaces the blame and instead of blaming it on to his own lack of skill or perhaps to his own stupidshyity for getting into the game in the first place he wreaks his venshygeance on the sacred Name of Jeshysus Christ

If we are Christians in the sense that we accept the Divinity of Christ we are forced to the conclushysion that the misuse of thst Name is blasphemy the greatest crime that a human being can commit since blasphemy is a direct insult to God Himself

We should not be too surprised that an unbeliever would use that Name disrespectfully but what we cannot understand is how a Chrisshytian who knows the dignity and power of that Name can use it in a profane way If it has been your bad fortune to have acquired a habit of using it irreverently make a firm promise to yourself and to the Bearer of that beautiful Name that it will not pass your lips again unless it is in giving it the honor which is its due

This was the life Suddenly from under the bridge and into the chanshynel came a couple of dozen LCVPs As the sail-boat slithered between them missing two of them by a matter of centimeters and as an LCM came at a ppid clip on a colshylision course from the opposite dishyrection Ens Fox nervously took comfort in the fact that sail has the right of way over anything else Ens Noyse acting as comshymunication officer reported that two kibitzers were wig-wagging from the shore pull down your shades (though it turned out lashyter they were saying pull down your sails)

So far they had been on one long tack Coming about shouted Ens Radke and threw the tiller all the way over The boat was a conshyverted whale-boat and had no censhyter-board so the darned thing wouldnt turn The causeway bridge was now within 20 feet and the

Under the supervision of Charles W Russell special field represenshytative of the American Red Cross the men are being schooled in all types of swimming including life saving and combat aquatics The first few days of the course which runs from January 9 to 20 were conducted in the North Island pool The remainder of the trainshying is being given under actual sea conditions in the surf at the Casino

crew saw the hand-writing on the wall Down came the sail and out went the oars only to discover that there were no oar-locks on one side Smack went another wave and the boat catapulted broadside into the bridge In less time than it takes to say were ruined Ensigns Noyse and Lister had thrown stern and bow lines over two nearshyby piles and the boat was held secure

Then came an hour wait with a procession of liberty-hounds passshying by and gazing over the bridge You Brooklyn farmers said Whitey Master of Arms at Camp 4 and dashed off to get help You boobs You peasants You idiots Ha ha said two seashymen second gazing at the helpless crew as though they were Bleutha Bears in the Bronx park zoo Fishynally the salvage boat slowly arrived Thank God for the inshydustrial age murmured Skipper Radke

As the salvage boat slowly towed them off the now humbled crew looked backward only to meet the ice-cube stare of Commander P M Fenton who had arrived in the familiar green car Troubles were not over for the salvage boat landed them high and dry on a sand-bar and the crew already completely shattered had to leap out and pull and swimthe boat in

Next day Executive memo to Camp 4 The Camp 4 sail-boat will not be taken out till further noshytice

If we had only had a centershyboard mused Ens Radke

WHO WENT TO SEA IN SAILBOAT The trouble with this 20000

horse-power world is the industrial age Take me back to the days when there were no machines - a man got in a boat of wood and sail and fought nature tooth and nail These LCVPs are for kids

Thus spoke Ensign Radke and thus it happened that on the windishyest day seen here in many moons Ensign Radke set off in the Camp 4 sailboat with a tried and trusty crew of Ensigns Noyse Fox Lisshyter and Carlin After snapping a guy and broaching the boat eight or nine times the salty crew from such seaports as Topeka Kansas and Bloomindale Arizona finally put out to sea

Mr Russell a resident of Fort Myers Beach Fla is well qualified for his work A water enthusiast

crew saw the hand-writing on the wall Down came the sail and out went the oars only to discover that there were no oar-locks on one side Smack went another wave and the boat catapulted broadside into the bridge In less time than it takes to say were ruined Ensigns Noyse and Lister had thrown stern and bow lines over two nearshyby piles and the boat was held secure

If we had only had a centershyboard mused Ens Radke

horse-power world is the industrial age Take me back to the days when there were no machines - a man got in a boat of wood and sail and fought nature tooth and nail These LCVPs are for kids

So far they had been on one long tack Coming about shouted Ens Radke and threw the tiller all the way over The boat was a conshyverted whale-boat and had no censhyter-board so the darned thing wouldnt turn The causeway bridge was now within 20 feet and the

crew saw the hand-writing on the wall Down came the sail and out went the oars only to discover that there were no oar-locks on one side Smack went another wave and the boat catapulted broadside into the bridge In less time than it takes to say were ruined Ensigns Noyse and Lister had thrown stern and bow lines over two nearshyby piles and the boat was held secure
