Compliant to the tee, like you know, no talk back, no, no nothing and why

is this happening. Like I, I don't understand, this, this isn't the plan; we

were supposed to just get the money and get out, like hey. They haven't

seen our faces, so what,Iucked up you know.

Iused your name, there's a

million Steve's in this world.

Okay

You know,

So he is trying to fill-up, boss you?

I'm trying to buy some time, you know and.

But, they're tied up, why didn't you untie them?

Ididn't even think about untying them, like for, for, for whatever stupidreason, like, it just didn't cross my mind, like when,

You didn't untie them, but you closed the doors, and

To buy them time!

Just to, in the hopes of buying them time?

Yeah

But you didn't untie them, why?

I, I didn't untie them. Well, in retrospect, you know, I should have but,

now in retrospect, like I shouldn't have even fuckin been there in the first

place.

I know, go on.

But, I, I, I get downstairs, and you know I was, and I'm like yelling at

Steve, we gotta, it's already been 5 minutes now and you know, I'm

confident, you know there's like, an army of police officers right outside

the door waiting to open fire on me as I open the door.

You could imagine.

And uh, so we' went straight for the back door and Steve was like, right

behind me urn, and I get out the back door and I'm going towards the back

part of the house, which leads to the garage. The front side of the garage

where the cars parked, and I turn around and Steve's not behind me

anymore. So now, I'm back tracking back into the house and as I'm doing

that, I'm looking, through the sunroom, and I can see in the neighbor'S

yard, that there is somebody plainly sitting there in the bushes watching

us. I'm like; I was like, this isn't happening.

You can see outside?

Yeah, once again Steve's racing upstairs.

He's racing up the stairs?

Up the stairs again.

And you can see in the yard, outside?

No, I'm, I'm walking into, into the house.

Oh, you're coming back in to see where he went?

Yeah, I was like well, where the hell did he go?

What is he doing?

He's racing up the stairs, and uh, I wasn't sure what he had at first, until

he comes racing back down the stairs, and he throws one of the empty

bottles into the kitchen.

Empty bottles of?

Of, of, gasoline.

Of gasoline, so he went back up with another bottle of gas?

With another bottle of gas.

So how many's that, 3 or 4?

4 all together.

Okay, so there's 4, he got, he went back up with the last bottle?

That's correct.

And what did he do with it?

I wasn't up there, and uh, I'm assuming, I was hoping that he was just

pouring it into the office because, we didn't pour any gasoline, or he

didn't pour any gasoline in, in the office. You know and, we had spent a

lot of time sitting in the chairs in there.

(Not audible) into rooms unless you were either, correct?

That's correct.

So you have no idea what he did with the gasoline?

No, Ican't say for sure what he did with it, urn.

He didn't tell you?

He did not say anything at all and I'm, I'm screaming at this point, we

gotta get out of here urn, this is madness. We finally uh, race out, race out

the door, out back. Urn, I have the key. I get, I get into the car and I start it

up, and as I'm starting it up, Steve is just coming around the comer, (not

audible) urn, he poured the rest of the house. Um, he's stumbling with this

oversized pack of matches, trying to light one.

Okay

And he gets through two of them, and none of them are lighting, and Ikeep telling him we gotta go, we gutta go, we gotta go. And Ican still see

this person in the grass, watching us.

Okay

And urn, he barely gets one lit and like, like, flicks it.

Yup.

And I, I see it sailing, I see the puddle of gasoline that was sitting on the

tile floor in the kitchen, and the entire kitchen just erupts.

Ignites

Yeah, there was like a sea offlames.

One match, just one match lit?

One yeah, uh, uh the, the third one that he tried,

Okay, he was pretty unsuccessful, the third one lights, ignites?

The third one lights, ignites the pool of gasoline in the kitchen and it

travels like, through, you can see it travel down the front hallway.

Towards, towards where the mother would be or?

No, towards where the stairway would be.

Okay

Urn, I was, I had already, had my back turned and I'm running to the door

because I knew that the couch that the mom was urn, dead against uh, was

doused. And I'm thinking, my mind its, its confined space, confmed space

with gas vapors everywhere. I'm thinking like, one of those action movies,

like blowouts the windows.

Windows?

Yeah, so, I'm racing out the door and uh, I reach around the corner and

jump into a car. Put the key into the ignition, and Istart it up. And uh, justas Istart it up, Steve comes running out. And uh, jumps into the passenger

side, and then I throw it in reverse. The vehicle is in reverse, and I hear uh,a, a cop's siren and then Ilook in my rear view and there's an unmarked

car, just pulling up and blocking the, the driveway.

Okay

Urn, which I proceeded to hit and urn, and.

The unmarked car?

The unmarked car and, was, when Ihit it, it sort of jerked me, in which, Iturned the wheel in, in sort of, in this crazy are, up into, and I uh,

backwards, driving backwards into the curve, and Iwent fast into the

bushes.

Now, at this point, is the house fully on fire? Can you tell if the house is

on fire?

I, I wasn't even looking.

You didn't know at this time?

So, so I could hear the fire alarm going off,

Okay

or a smoke detector uh, going off

Okay

I figured that was going to happen anyway, because the kitchen was fully

in flames.

On fire. When you left, the kitchen was actually in flames?

Yes

Okay

The whole hallway and kitchen was in flames.

So you back up, you hit the ern, you hit the unmarked, you try and go

forward?

Urn, I got caught up in some bushes and I was trying to put it in drive, andfor whatever reason I just, it wasn't happening. I couldn't figure out how

to drive anymore. Like, I was just panic stricken, and I didn't know how to

drive. I literally forgot how to drive. And Steve grabs the uh, the shifter

and throws it in drive and yells gas it. And uh, which I did. And uh, took

off, off the curve and onto the street. And uh, you know, looking around at

this, this is what happens in like, slow mo. And I'm looking around, there

was cops everywhere, and every single gun was like, trained like, right at

my head. And uh, I was like, I'm gonua die today. Either their going or

I'm going away for the rest of my life, or I'm going to die.

Okay, now, now you're, you're fleeing the scene in the car, you're driving

the, the homeowner's vehicle.

That's correct.

You already hit the unmarked, you drove through the front lawn, headed

up the street and.

Like uh, towards like, this little bend uh, in the road and there's two urn,

Cheshire police cars uh, parked you know, barricading the road.

Yep

Uh, and then suddenly that an uh, officer uh, with a rifle uh, trained right

on me, some other officers off to the side.

Did you try to run him over?

Urn, I wasn't trying to specifically run him over, but I was trying to get

away.

You weren't stopping?

No, I wasn't stopping. I was, I, I had to get through those police cars,

there's no other way out.

Did you hit the officer?

I sure hope not.

Okay, you don't know if you did or not? Okay, did you hit the cruisers?

I certainly hit the cruisers.

And then what?

Urn, the air bags deployed, I then uh. It got really blurry for a little bit and

all I can hear in, like the distance, echo, was my hands out of the car uh,

get out of the car, hands out of the car, come out slowly urn, then it sort of,

it felt like an eternity uh. I sort of, slowly complied and got out of the car

and laid down, face, face down on the pavement.

Did you say anything to the police officers at that time?

Urn, there were a lot of questions being thrown at me uh, and I was still

like uh, you know, what do I do, what do I do, what do I do. Urn, finally

urn, one of the officers had fmally gotten close enough for he was up uh,

putting the handcuffs on, then he asked me, how many people uh, were in

the house and who, was there, is there any other accomplices? I said

there's absolutely no other accomplices. There's just me and him. And

that there's uh, three people in the house uh, one of which I thought was

dead urn.

Referring to the mother?

Referring to the mother, that's correct. Urn, he again asked uh, how many

people were in the house or something to that effect? And I said uh, two

girls in the upstairs bedroom uh, front facing bedrooms uh, and that they

were still alive. Urn, and then he got on the radio or called or radioed it in.

Did you tell him the house was on fire?

Urn, I, I didn't because I, I knew that he already knew, because he was

just, just talking to a civilian or somebody was mentioning that to him on

the radio. Urn, and that's why I said to him, the, the two front bedrooms,

there, there right there, there's two windows for each room, the, the only

two front bedrooms there.

want to reiterate the fact that Iasked you early on, and when Imentionedthis at the beginning of the tape, Iasked you if you had any allergies,

illnesses or were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. And you said,

you were not; you were not allergic to anything, correct?

No, no, I'm allergic to uh, aspirin.

Oh, you said aspirin, correct.

Right

We provided you with lunch and that was part of the reason Ihad askedyou, McDonald's, you had soda, coffee, uh

Cheeseburgers.

Cheeseburgers and you were provided use of the bathroom, correct. And

Absolutely, you're absolutely right. Alright, what's going to happen Joshis, having said all that urn, this statement has been recorded as you know.

It will be transcribed into a typewritten form, Urn, after this you will be

asked to read and sign the typewritten statement which is your statement.

Is that agreeable to you?

Yes

Okay, Is there anything you want to add? You kind of just said it, that

you, you screwed up and the family was,

It wasn't supposed to be like this, it was strictly, strictly go to the bank and

leave.

As far, as far as your statement, your statement's been truthful that, it's,

you're not saying that you strangled anybody and you're not saying you,

you lit the match, you're not saying that you poured the gas.

Right

But, obviously you were there, you did all the other things that you, you

I, I, I did assault the father urn.

And you had sexual uh, contact with the daughter?

Yes
