Statement Of Teaching-Research-Cv.-Students’ Work

I am an assistant professor of architecture and design, and I received my

Master degree (1997) and Ph.D. (2001) in Art History (Major: History of

architecture) from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. I began my

career as a practicing architect, and a site engineer for almost 20 years. I began

my academic career in 2001. However, I have a considerable experience of

managerial, academic teaching work and a continuous field work as an

architect. I have worked in several academic institutions where I taught

several groups of students from different cultures. My work experience during

39 years has developed a number of personal skills, including meeting

deadlines, work under stress and work within multinational community.

My primary concern now is to pass on my concepts of design to younger

architects, as well as to develop educational courses that reflect these concepts

to the architectural students. However, I believe that my experience will allow

me to participate in a highly sensitive and promising educational and

academic environment as well as bringing ideas and enthusiasm to my

students and colleagues.

Teaching Statement:

I believe, as an architect and a teacher, that it is my responsibility to help and

support my students throughout their university years to understand the real

meaning of architecture and its essential role to society. First, I encourage my

students to develop an interest in art and architecture, as well as how architects

do architecture practically. Second, I teach them how they can distinguish

between creating a piece of architecture and any other types of buildings.

Third, I stress their collaboration with their peers, which is the underlying

structure of the process of scientific teaching.

Generally, students do come to class with preconceived notions about the field

of architecture. These preconceived ideas may consist of assumptions,

generalizations, and ideologies that may contribute to a lack of appreciation

and understanding of the real meaning of architecture and design. However,

before I challenge my students and let them think differently, I provide them

with a well-informed view of architecture, and help them to see the relevance

of architectural concepts in their lives. My philosophy is to bring architecture

to life by providing examples based on what students see, feel, and touch from

the surrounding environment. However, my teaching draws up a variety of

Dr. Abdel-moniem El-Shorbagy, 2017 Page 2 of 26

approaches as I am teaching both theoretical subjects as well as design studios,

for example, the following subjects represent my area of specialty:

‘Architecture Design Studios’

‘Capstone research’

‘Capstone project’

My prime objectives in all these related subjects is to allow the students to

take a deeper and more detailed look at architectural principles of creating

buildings’ interiors, exteriors, architectural spaces, forms, and understanding

their relationships while achieving visual aesthetics and functional

requirements. I conduct discussion among my students to share views on

enhancing problem solving methods for their architecture projects. I also

allow them the opportunity to express and discuss their personal concept and

view of architecture. Part of the design studio is teach them how to develop

self-management and work under a timeframe.

‘Theory of Architecture’

‘History of Architecture’

‘History of Islamic Architecture’

These three theoretical and historical subjects are essential to architects in

order to be prepared to think logically when they practically design a project.

I prepare my students to think historically and appreciate the importance of

change over time, where many architectural theories, approaches, tendencies

appear and affect architects’ thinking as well as the environment. The main

core of my teaching philosophy is to generate the spirit of research among the

students to explore more about the architectural theories and movements and

to become knowledgeable of the common definitions and terminologies to the

field of architecture. Then through regular interactive seminars, the students

reflect on their findings, share knowledge through positive and constructive

discussion and this would enable them analyse different architectural thoughts

and philosophies. I also put emphasis on raising the students’ awareness and

appreciation of the architectural vocabulary, which they may apply in

contemporary buildings appropriate to their society.

‘Comparative Architectural Thoughts’

Dr. Abdel-moniem El-Shorbagy, 2017 Page 3 of 26

In 21st century, students and (architects) are faced with a big number of

architectural and urban design theories, which establish the foundation on

which students generate their ideas and conceptual designs. However, this

course-seminar intends to discuss the important theories, movements,

tendencies, and approaches and its influence on shaping contemporary

architecture. Students are encouraged to observe and study existing

architectural work and make conclusions about it as a way of finding

inspiration. In addition, they are also required to examine these theories’

characteristics, strengths and limitations, in order to increase their

understanding and appreciation to the traditions and ideas that created them.

Other subjects, which I also taught for seven years:

‘Structure in Architecture’ The course focus on the effects of forces and stresses in structural elements

(frames, columns and their grid patterns, arches, cables, etc) on architectural

forms, and the basics of using such elements in architectural space formation

and organization. My main objective is to enable the students to differentiate

between several structural systems, to become knowledgeable about loads,

statics, and strength of materials, as well as to teach them how to design a

simple reinforced concrete structure (slabs, beams, columns and footing). In

the class, the presentation includes many different illustrations to all the

structural elements during its execution phases to help the student to integrate

this information into their own life experience. I also combine between theory

and practice, where I conduct visits to construction sites in many different

stages to allow the opportunity to the students to envisage the construction

processes.

‘Mechanical, Electrical, and Fire Protection Systems’

This subject is an introduction to and overview to the mechanical, electrical,

plumbing, and fire protection systems for buildings as used by architects. It

also focuses on environmental systems such as active heating and cooling,

electricity, and HVAC systems for buildings. In addition, the course covers

artificial illumination and air conditioning system. It will also concentrate on

understanding Energy management in commercial buildings.

Research Statement:

Dr. Abdel-moniem El-Shorbagy, 2017 Page 4 of 26

My research and my teaching have a reciprocal relationship, where both of

them inform and enlighten each other. In fact, I do believe that there is a fine

dividing line between research and teaching. However, I always try to be at

the cutting edge of recent research in order to help students to appreciate the

dynamic nature of the architectural field. My research, which extends to

diverse issues in architecture, is deeply meaningful to my students’ learning

experiences. In many instances, my students counted on my published

academic papers as well as used materials from my numerous articles on the

internet, which outline and illuminate many of the essential issues in

architecture. Another important point is that I encourage my students for

conducting research papers with me and we have realized the first one in 2016.

In 2010, I have been assigned to be the Project Manager of the development

and upgrading of two unplanned districts, ‘Bani-Malik’ and ‘Al-

Boghdadiyah’ Districts, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The project is part of the

development of the unplanned settlements project in Jeddah and is

commissioned to Effat University by Jeddah Development and Urban

Regeneration Company (JDURC). This project represented an excellent

opportunity to both faculty and students. The research and urban design

project is a collaborative work between senior students and faculty under my

supervision. Samples of the students’ work are included.

2. Practical Responsibility

Through my work for Inter-Consult Office and the Architectural Group office

I had the opportunity to share in the design of many large scale public

buildings such as hospitals, hotels, public library, health center and many

high-rise residential buildings. As general manager of SITE, which was

established in 1982, my work included the design and execution of residential

high-rise apartment buildings, individual suburban houses, small hotels, villas

and interior design for houses and commercial shops. Through SITE I shared

in many architectural competitions, exhibitions and travelled extensively and

this helped me to develop a personal architectural style in design and to work

directly with clients. It also gave me the opportunity to pass on my concepts

of design to younger architects, who joined the office during the period 1984

- 1995.
