STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK UNIVERSITY AT STONY BROOK
2015 CAMPUS STATEMENT
The University at Stony Brook got its start in 1957 at a temporary location on the Planting Fields estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island. First known as the State University College of Long Island at Oyster Bay, the college trained secondary-education teachers of mathematics and science. In 1959 construction began on the permanent campus of 480 acres donated by philanthropist Ward Melville near the Village of Stony Brook. After opening in 1962, the campus became known as the State University of New York at Stony Brook, or Stony Brook University (SBU). Stony Brook has grown to 205 buildings on 1,454 acres. Now with over 24,600 students, 2,200 faculty, and a total of 14,500 employees, it is recognized as one of the nation’s top centers for learning and scholarship. With locations in Stony Brook, Manhattan, and Southampton, a Research and Development Park, and a Hospital within an Academic Medical Center, Stony Brook is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, and ranks among the top 100 national universities and top 35 public national universities, according to the 2010 U.S.News & World Report survey. Stony Brook has approximately 175.6 million dollars in sponsored project expenditures and offers more than 40 doctoral programs. As co-manager of Brookhaven National Laboratory (with Battelle Memorial Institute), Stony Brook is one of an elite group of universities—including the University of California, University of Chicago, Princeton University, and Stanford University—that run federal research and development laboratories. A driving force of the Long Island economy, Stony Brook contributes an annual economic impact of 4.65 billion dollars, generates nearly 60,000 jobs, and accounts for nearly 4 percent of all economic activity in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and roughly 7.5 percent of total jobs in Suffolk County. Phase I and Phase II of the DASNY-funded Toll Drive Residence and Dining Hall project has begun construction, and will provide 759 additional beds and a new 60,000 square foot replacement dining facility in the fall of 2016. The comprehensive renovation of the Pritchard Pool has begun and is scheduled for completion spring 2016. The new Computer Sciences building is completed with Ribbon Cutting July 2015. Design documents for a complete rehab of the Stony Brook Union are complete and construction is scheduled to start spring of 2016. The University is undertaking multiple small projects to relocate existing tenants to other locations. The design process for Stony Brook’s Mezzanine Building, now called Innovation and Discovery Center has also begun. Construction to add cooling capacity in the East Central Power Plant is nearly complete, which will provide cooling capacity for the new, Medical and Research Translational (MART) Tower. The NYSUNY 2020 initiative, 240,000 sq. ft. 8 story, MART/ Bed Tower project, continues construction of core and shell as well as fit out phases. The upgrade and expansion of the West Central Power Plant continues with expected completion in 2016. The NIH/ARRA funded expansion of the ABSL3 Laboratory construction is nearing completion. Design for replacement of the air handling units for the ECC building, and the existing Computer Science building is nearing completion. Replacement of air handler units in Physics and Administration continues. The last two phases of the underground electric transmission system replacement continue, providing the complete replacement of the campus’ underground electric system. Design to replace the last sections of direct buried HTHW piping has begun. Replacement of the second of three boilers in east plant will begin construction in summer 2015. The fire alarm system in ESS was recently replaced with a new fully addressable system. Multiple research labs in Life Sciences and ESS are under construction and the new Institute for Advanced Computational Science recently opened. Roof replacements on Discovery, Rockland, Psych A&B and Computer Science were completed this year. Replacement of windows in Psych A&B has started and completion is scheduled for 2016.
