Introduction

Why do we care? 136 million tons construction/demolition debris in 19961

Commercial Construction 2-2.5 lbs solid waste/ft2

Example: a 80,000 ft2 school generates nearly 100 tons of waste during construction

LEED New Construction – Building Reuse

MR_1 Building Reuse (3 points) Reuse/Repair existing

structures including roof, floors, and exterior building envelop.

Thresholds:• 1 point – 55% reused ft2

• 2 points – 75% reused ft2

• 3 points – 95% reused ft2

Landfill Impact – Reducing the amount of waste associated with demolition of existing building structures will greatly reduce the solid waste generated by the project.

LEED New Construction – Waste Management

MR_2 Construction Waste Management (2 points) Divert solid waste collected

during construction from the landfill.

Thresholds:• 1 point – 50% diverted• 2 points – 75% diverted• Additional Innovation

point – 95% diverted Sorted Onsite or Offsite Report in Tons or YD3

Landfill Impact – By pre-planning the construction waste management, the project can maximize waste recycling efforts.

LEED New Construction – Material Reuse

MR_3 Material Reuse (2 points) Reuse onsite building

components not included in MR_1.

Reuse building materials salvaged from another site.

Habitat for Humanity Restore

Thresholds:• 1 point – 5% reuse• 2 points – 10% reuse

Landfill Impact – Similar to MR_1 Building Reuse, reducing the amount of waste associated with demolition of miscellaneous building components will reduce the solid waste generated by the project.

LEED New Construction – Waste Management

MR_4 Recycled Content (2 points) Fosters demand for products

containing recycled materials. Thresholds:

• 1 point – 10% recy content• 2 points – 20% recy content• Additional Innovation point –

30% recycled content Post-consumer recycled content

is weighted higher than pre-consumer.

Landfill Impact – Diverting solid waste is pointless unless there exists a market for its remanufacturer and reuse.
