State Regent’s Message Dear Oklahoma Daughters: It is magnificent observing all of our chapters’ using “Keys to DAR” in projects/activities; demonstrating love with random acts of kindness and aiding others. Oklahoma Daughters throughout the state are expanding your families every day, bringing people into your lives that produce a positive impact. It’s preparation for what’s next, what’s around the corner and how you can or become a contributing member. You’re exerting a tremendous influence in our Oklahoma communities. These are the “KEYS” for building a healthy chapter and boasting members’ rewarding DAR journeys.
Chapters appear to have a detailed plan of how to achieve chapter goals successfully. Oklahoma DAR “measures up” through employing hard work and generosity of time, talents, and monetary resources and building on the shoulders of earlier leaders. Anne Rogers Minor, President General in 1923 stated so well--“In DAR, it depends upon the kind of spirit in which you do its work and it depends on what you give to it, not what you get out of it”. You’ve big-heartedly contributed to Oklahoma’s Veterans First Fund to create the legacy and generously shared your time with veterans and thanked them for standing guard over our values of freedom and democracy; recognized individuals quietly performing community service; acknowledged outstanding history teachers; wrote grants to acquire money to mark historic sites for historic preservation; gifted leisure reading books for elementary students (sometimes this has been the first time they’ve ever owned a book) and encouraged middle school and high school students to write essays. Are you ready for inspiration, discovery, connecting with others and flourishing on your DAR journey? If so, immediately take out your pen and fill in the registration form; make out your check payable to OSDAR or call the Great Plains Conference Registration Chairman Linda Mann at (405) 668-0360 and provide her with your credit card number and she’ll take your payment via our electronic credit card reader; mail your registration form to Linda Mann; and dial the Embassy Suites to reserve your room. It’s time to celebrate as the Great Plains District is hosting the conference. Conference Chair Marqueta Bentley and District Director Deborah Aldridge are busily planning a dazzling celebratory event for us. Additional “Keys to DAR” are being utilized by State Chairmen of American History, Sue Roth; Junior American Citizens, Judy Ringwall; DAR Good Citizens, Grace Ellsworth; and Outstanding History Teacher, Dr. Barbara McClanahan for planning a distinctive honors and awards ceremony for students, teachers and guests on Friday afternoon. Your participation and attendance on Friday afternoon is imperative to demonstrate to parents and their students what DAR members do in their communities. Like beads on a wire, DAR Daughters are all connected, linked together by bonds of friendship and shared experiences. We are grateful to have State Regents present from Mississippi and Louisiana.

Christy VanCleave How do you teach love when a person hasn’t
ever experienced it? How do you teach love to a
dog that is a rescue dog and probably never
experienced affection? Christy VanCleave found
the answers by pairing the woman and dog
together in a program called “Muddy Paws”.
Christy is the Executive Director of Muddy Paws / Pets Helping People
in Tulsa, OK; a non-profit that teaches incarcerated women as well as
other felons careers in the grooming, boarding, day care and training
fields for the pet industry.
Training and teaching is her passion. She loves nothing more than to
see individuals learn, become managers or own their own shops. She
trains the women mostly by using rescued and adopted dogs.
Billie Foutch Smith Breedlove Vita
Billie serves as the State Regent of the Mississippi
State Society DAR. She serves on the Board of
Trustees for Kate Duncan Smith DAR School, the
Advisory Board of Tamassee DAR School and the
National Board of Management.
She is an active in the James Gilliam Chapter. She has served as
chapter Chaplain, First Vice Regent, and Regent. At the Mississippi
State Society she served as Volunteer Genealogist Chairman, a state
officer in both the Grimes and Whittington administrations. She has
served NSDAR as a member of the Registration Committee, Library
Balcony Genealogist, and Lineage Research Vice-Chairman, SE
Division.
David and Catherine Carter
David Carter served as an officer in the
United States Marine Corps and retired
after 28 years. Catherine is a proud
Daughter of the our beloved NSDAR and
has received recognition for her work from
the USMC and the State of California for her work with military families
during war. Currently, Catherine is a hospital director and David works
with veterans.
Catherine and David Carter are board members of the United States
Marshals Posse of the Western District of Oklahoma. Catherine serves
as the Vice President and David is a board member.
SMSgt Dan Snow
SMSgt Dan Snow is the Field Representative for
Veterans Affairs for the First Congressional
District. Sergeant Snow retired from the US Air
Force in 2002 after 23 years of service.
He spent the first 15 years in Air Force Security Forces becoming one
of the foremost experts in Air Base Ground Defense. He designed and
implemented the security for a squadron of F117A stealth Fighters
during Operations Desert Shield/Storm in 1990-91.
SMSgt Snow co-founded the Air Force JROTC program at Union high
school immediately after his retirement in 2002. This program has
quickly become known as one of the best in the nation.
Sue Lewis Simpson
Sue Lewis Simpson, 44th Louisiana State Regent, is
an 18 year member of DAR. She served the
Louisiana Society as state treasurer for six years
and state historian for three.
On the national level, she has served as a National Vice Chairman
South Central Division for Junior American Citizens and currently
serves as a National Vice Chairman South Central Division for The
Flag of the United State of America. She has also held numerous
chairmanships at the chapter and state level.
Katie Prior
15-year old Katie Prior is the founder of the Youth
Trumpet & Taps Corps, a 501c3 non-profit
organization that trains, supports, and recognizes
high school trumpet players who use their musical
gifts to honor military veterans. When Katie heard
that many veterans’ funerals have an audio
recording of Taps, she decided to recruit her friends to see to it that
veterans in her community get the live tribute they deserve.
She developed the program as her Girl Scout Gold Award and became
the council’s youngest awardee in history at the age of 14. She has
since grown her organization, held training workshops in Oklahoma,
Texas, and Wisconsin, and created an online training that can be taken
by any high school trumpeter across the country. To date, she has
trained 52 trumpet players in ten states who volunteer to sound live
Taps at military funerals and perform patriotic music at community
events honoring veterans.

necklace in black leopard to benefit the Veterans’ First
Fund. It is square cut slate and black cat’s eyes, smoky
and clear glass stations form bib in 14K gold-plated
brass.
This luxurious necklace can be seen in Neiman Marcus
and it will be available for viewing in the sales room
during conference. Kendra Scott Company has been lauded for its ability to outfit all
women with elegant and expressive jewelry. Tickets are available in the sales room
for $5.00 each or 5 tickets for $20.00. This exquisite necklace will be drawn for at
State Conference in April 2016. This is another unique way to support our
veterans.
The solid pewter with brass em-
bellishment pieces are original
portrait sculptures honoring the heroes of both the North and
South. One of the sculptures is that of DAR member Clara Bar-
ton who introduced the International Red Cross to the United
States. The certificate of authenticity accompanies this lovely
chess set. Voices will be sold during the conference and the
