Research and Teaching

Colleges and universities are dedicated to teaching and research.

SECTION 2: HOW UNIVERSITIES IMPACT YOU

But remember:• Teaching doesn’t always mean a classroom.• Research can happen anytime, anywhere.

There’s a strong relationship between research, teaching and communities.

These partnerships can benefit the world at large.

Research is a process of investigation — a way of looking at information from many different aspects in an attempt to find accurate answers to your questions. Let’s take a look at a research model.

What Is Research?

2.20

Page 24: STATE OF TOMORROW PRESENTATION

REFLECTIONBefore, during and after the process

Identify an issue and develop a research question.1

Learn more about your issue. What does existing research show?2

Gather and analyze data.4

Take action and share your findings.5

Develop a strategy for your study.3

Data is information gathered in the research process:

• People and places• Dates and times• Tools and measurements• Weather• Seasons• Years• You name it!

SECTION 2: HOW UNIVERSITIES IMPACT YOU

Every piece of information can be valuable data.2.22

Page 26: STATE OF TOMORROW PRESENTATION

In the State of Tomorrow ™ series, you’ll see how research centers use data to solve complex problems.

What Is a Research Center?

• Revolutionary cancer care methods at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

• Conservation in the Gulf of Mexico at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

• Exploration of the solar system at UT Austin’s McDonald Observatory.

• Cold case crime scene investigations at the University of North Texas Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology and Human Identification.

A research center is a facility that exists to advance human knowledge about different aspects of the world, such as:

Page 28: STATE OF TOMORROW PRESENTATION

Advantages of Working in a Research Center

• Students and professors work together to answer questions.

• Researchers can work together or individually on different aspects of a problem.

• Community members can consult with experts about real problems and raise questions that may start a new research project.

Community/University Research Partnerships

A university research center partners with the community and agrees to look for answers to the question.

The research process begins through studies that often involve community members.

A community has a question or problem it needs help solving. This can be in any number of areas: water conservation, healthcare, pollution, etc.

Community learns research results. Sometimes a study may generate additional research or lead to a solution that’s implemented in the community.

Real-World ResearchIn every episode of State of Tomorrow™ you’ll see examples of the profound impact research can have on our everyday lives. Large or small, each new research project begins with a question that usually leads to more questions.

For example:• How do we protect our natural resources for future generations?• How can we better help people in the event of a disaster?• How does music impact our daily lives? • What is public art?
