Dear Friends of the Byrd,

Thank you for your contribution to the Byrd Theatre Foundation. I am pleased to be able to share great news about our progress in fulfilling our mission: to preserve the historic Byrd Theatre as a grand movie palace. Due in part to your interest and support, the Foundation is able to provide diverse cultural, educational and performance opportunities serving the communities of Central Virginia.

The Foundation has made excellent progress toward meeting our immediate goals of restoring the theatre, establishing a financially sound operating base, and improving accessibility for the entire community. Over the past three years, we have successfully met two extraordinary challenge grants from two prominent Virginia sources: the 1 to 1, $250,000 challenge from the Cabell Foundation and a $250,000 challenge from the Mary Morton Parsons Foundation. The total raised to date in capital and capacity-building is $1.4 million.

Both of these funds directly support the Foundation’s plans for the Theatre’s restoration, increasing our internal capacity-building while enhancing our visibility and credibility within the larger community. We are very proud of the Foundation’s achievements over the last few years. We have been able to replace the roof, upgrade to digital sound and projection technology, install a new boiler, and make necessary

organ repairs to keep the fabulous Wurlitzer theatre organ playing for another eighty-five years. We are currently completing replacement of our antique air conditioning equipment. These milestones although mostly invisible, represent the first phases of a master plan that will culminate in the installation of new, capacious theatre seats!

On July 18 of this year the Foundation launched “The Journey to the Seats,” our campaign for the complete restoration of the theatre over the next three years. In the following pages you will find information

about our current program of ongoing activities, special events, and donor recognition.

We are grateful for your interest in and support for the mission of the Byrd Theatre Foundation. Please visit the website: thebtf.org for more information on how you can participate.

Special Thanks

The Board of Directors of the Byrd Theatre Foundation gratefully acknowledges the following donors whose capital and operating gifts cumulatively total over $1.4 million, through June 30, 2014.

These gifts have enabled the Foundation to begin the “Journey to the Seats,” completing five significant, crucial updates: the replacements of the roof, boiler, and chiller, mandatory organ maintenance, and the purchase of new digital projection equipment. The Foundation has paid down the mortgage $538,000, now one third closer to realizing full ownership of the theatre.

Your gift also helps ensure the Byrd’s complete restoration stays on our projected timeline of 2017.

Organ RestorationOf over 2,200 theatre organs the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company delivered across the world, the Byrd’s Mighty Wurlitzer remains among only 40 known residing in their original location, fewer than 10 on the east coast, and arguably the single console still played as often.

This “one man orchestra” was built to imitate any instrument of the modern orchestra at the time, providing prolific background scores and sound effects for silent feature films. There are no speakers, and nothing is synthesized. Every sound you hear is actually played on instruments, housed in four sequential rooms above the proscenium and stage.

After 80 years, the organ’s wear became too great and focused fundraising began in 2010. House Organist Bob Gulledge, who mans the console each Saturday night, believed it was just a few months away from becoming a museum piece, a relic.

In the five years since, the Wurlitzer Restoration Committee led by Gulledge himself, has recruited organ builder and restorationist Thomas Rohlfs of Rocky Mount. Together, he and Gulledge have refelted, reglued, refashioned, and at times, refabricated instruments, completing over $20,000 in critical repairs, and outlined the roadmap for restoring this gem for yet another 85 years of play.

Phase two of the organ restoration plans for focus on the console itself and the mechanics of operation. Just over $90,000 is expected to update the stop tab rails and pneumatics, the stop tab action chests and the piston combination action chests.
