Connection - to sustain current relationships and develop new ones - is a foundational value of the Rogue Gallery & Art Center today, as well as during 2010. Many long-time supporters have continued to see the importance and meaning in our presence and our programs. These individuals and businesses contribute to our mission, helping us to stay stable as we navigate the uncertain terrain ahead. Our volunteer force has grown and changed as we have attracted and retained new volunteers, and others have moved on.

Long-time volunteer, Molly Philips left us a legacy upon her passing which brought much needed financial support to our Artist Teen Mentoring Program, enabling teens to work with professional artists.

In November of 2010, the organization’s major founder, Eugene Bennett, died and left a legacy of substantial support for the organization to carry us into the future.

As a life-long teacher, Eugene would appreciate our proximity to a new institution of learning, the RCC-SOU Higher Education Center. We look ahead to increased connectivity with our neighbors across the street, engaging students and faculty in our mission.

Last year, we continued our partnership with Jackson Elementary School, providing curriculum-based art lessons to low-income 5th grade students through our Arts Outreach Program, funded by the Reed and Carolee Walker Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation. Through their generosity again this year, and with additional funding from the Anna May Foundation, we will expand the program to at least one other elementary school. Within the next few years, our goal is to provide this same visual art curriculum to every 5th grade student in the Medford public schools.

A major source of support during 2010 came from the Meyer Memorial Trust through a one-time recession relief grant of $27,500. Our ongoing association with The Carpenter Foundation and the Oregon Arts Council brought in additional operating funds for our programs. We are so fortunate!

Through our exhibition program, we forged new ties with art organizations beyond our region. We worked with Avenue 50 Studio, a multi-cultural art center in Los Angeles to present Viva la Vida: Synthesis of Cultures. The Rogue Valley Biennial hosted Portland Art Museum’s curator of contempo-rary northwest art for a lecture on the topic, co-sponsored by the RCC and SOU art departments.

During 2010, we put over $44,000 into the pockets of artists, craftspeople, and art instructors, helping to buoy up the creative sector’s economy in the region. Our Main and Members’ galleries displayed the work of over 300 artists, offering our visitors a glimpse into the minds and hearts of artists.

Our internal relationships are as critical to our success as are our external ones. Our board of directors is a major force in our ability to meet our mission. Together with these high-level volun-teers, an entirely new staff has propelled us to today with fresh ideas and new expertise to meet the challenges that the unsettled social, political and economic environment may bring. As the world turns around us, the board and staff are committed to staying focused on our important task of impacting lives through the visual arts. RGAC is known regionally for presenting high quality art exhibitions annually. Each year’s exhibition series features established regional artists as well as those emerging in their careers. Exhibitions of cultural and social relevance and those spotlighting a specific medium or an artistic process are regularly scheduled as part of the organization’s interest in diversity. RGAC strives to help artists reach their potential by offering opportunities to exhibit and sell, meet the public to talk about their work, and build resumes through participation with a well established and respected arts organization. Public programs accompany the exhibitions in various forms: docent tours, lectures, and demonstrations offer informative and educational components within which to better understand and appreciate art techniques, styles, and the societal importance of art.

The RGAC education program targets both professional artists and new and younger students with classes and workshops in traditional and cutting edge art techniques. The Artist Teen Mentoring Project serves teen art students through workshops, studio sessions, and mentoring by professional artists. Children’s art classes and camps provide discipline-based study that fills a gap left vacant in public education in recent years. From open studios to intensivee topical workshops, adults can discover their creative selves, develop perspective, or learn new techniques. Grant funding and our scholarship fund make it possible for those who need financial assistance to attend quality art classes.

RGAC advocates for art opportunities and events in the community at large, often helping to launch art programs that continue under the leadership and management of other organizations. The community is exposed to high quality and diverse art forms through the availability of the gallery for use as a meeting and reception venue. We provide further presence for the visual arts throughout the community by sponsoring exhibitions at satellite venues in collaboration with other organizations in the downtown arts and culture district, including the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater and the Medford Public Library. In addition we participate in community events such as the Art in Bloom Festival, the Taste of History, and Third Friday Art Walk.
