State of Cursillo
“Speak, Lord, for Your Servant is Listening” 1Sam 3:9
De Colores! The time has come. We have enough applicants and are
planning weekends for in October. Please continue to send in applications.
We hope to finalize the exact location and dates soon. We believe this time
of discernment has been fruitful through all of our prayers, study and
action. Our School of Leaders (SOL) is active again! And I for one feel
blessed to have movement growing again. Ultreya! Onward!
Another exciting event occurring this year is a Cursillo de Cursillo (CDC) in
Kansas City, June 11-14th. The flyer is included in the newsletter. CDC is a
course for Cursillistas searching for something beyond the Weekend. CDC
has helped many Cursillistas learn more about what Cursillo has to offer to
themselves and the Church. It helps us become stronger Christian leaders.
The schedule is very similar to a Weekend. It begins on Thursday evening
and ends on Sunday afternoon. And much like a Weekend, it goes by very
quickly. This CDC weekend is a more relaxed atmosphere with time for
developing friendships, reflection and meditation and daily Eucharist. I
hope a number of Cursillistas from our diocese will attend. Scholarships in
the amount of $100 each is available on a limited basis for those attending
CDC.
I don’t know about you all, but the Lent of 2015 has been a powerful one
for me. I seem to be more open to what God is asking me to do in this life
He has given me. This discernment process our Cursillo movement has gone
through started it and now through the SOL it continues with the theme of
“And I on Him”.
We have been studying “Whom Shall I Send? Discerning the Will of God” by
Fr Frank Salmani. If you have not yet read this book yet, do it. It is easy to
read and it has given me help in figuring out how to discern what I should
be doing for God. You can purchase it through the National Cursillo website
at https://www.natl-cursillo.org/.

Pope Francis tells us that “each Christian and every community must discern the path that the Lord points
out”. He goes on to say, “All of us are asked to obey His call to go forth from our own comfort zone in order
to reach all the ‘peripheries’ in need of the light of the Gospel.” Joy of the Gospel, Apostolic Exhortation by
Pope Francis.
Evangelization seems to be a priority of Pope Francis. And who better to help him than Cursillistas. We
have been given the tools to go out and evangelize our environments. With the support of our friendship
groups we can deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ through piety, study and action. It is through our
friendships with others that the process of our conversion occurs, especially those friendships of our group
reunions and Ultreyas. We have to become friends with ourselves, with others and with Christ to go out
and spread the gospel to others.
Be a friend. Make a friend. Bring Christ to the world.

“TRUST IN YOUR CLUB”
I love to play golf but I am at best just an average golfer. When I shoot a round of 90 I feel like that I
have had a pretty good day. My two sons on the other hand are good golfers and they sometimes
give me advice to improve my game. One thing they might tell me is that you have to keep your
swing the same and let the club do the work. “Dad, just pick a club and trust in the club “ would be
their advice. This is easier said than done but I am slowly learning that the club will do what it is
designed to do if you are consistent with your swing.
When I started my Cursillo in 1984; I, like all the new cusillistas, made a pledge at Closure as the
priest hung that cross around my neck and said: “Christ is counting on you”; and we responded “And
I on Him.” At that moment I was expecting that if I wanted to achieve that “peace that goes beyond
human understanding,” which I was hoping for through Cursillo, then I would have to make it
happen myself. Because all I heard that afternoon in March were the words that Christ is counting
on me. If I wanted more peace I would simply swing harder so to speak. I forgot the second half of
that pledge, the phrase I actually responded, “And I on Him.” Or as my sons would say just trust in
the club and let the club do the work.
Like golf, I am a slow learner in Cursillo. This is actually my third School of Leaders (SOL) that I have
been fortunate enough to be involved in over the past 30 years; and thanks to the other participants
and the priests and deacons I might finally be getting it. I have learned that Christ is in Cursillo and if
you want to serve Christ then we can serve Cursillo. Leaders are called to be true servants following
the example of Jesus. Leaders need to keep their motivation for selfless service pure. Allegiance to
Jesus means living a life that is true, honest and sincere; which brings joy to your life and those
around you. Finally, like Jesus, we need to be continually renewed by prayer. These truths taught to
us at SOL by the Deacons and Priests and lived out by the other cursillistas involved has giving me a
better understanding of what “And I on Him” really means. Maybe it is not what all I do but what
Christ is doing in me through the school, grouping and ultreya that is helping me achieve that peace I
was looking for on that Sunday afternoon in Moberly. I think I will just keep swinging and trust in
the club. (Jesus)

Cursillo and Christ vs. Cursillo or Christ Deacon Al Brand
Cathedral of St Joseph
When I was asked to speak at the March 24, 2015 School of Leaders and given the topic: “Cursillo and Christ
Vs. Cursillo or Christ” at first I wondered what that topic was all about. Then, as I read chapter 7 of WHOM
SHOULD I SEND: Discerning The Will of God by Fr. Frank S Salmani, and thought about my own experiences as
a Cursillo team member, or service team or cook team member, I began to see how our egos would want us to
place the emphasis on the weekend itself rather than on the total Cursillo process.
For example, as a cook team member, the discussions were not so much on providing good healthy meals in a
timely, cost effective, and efficient manner that would keep the participants and team alert and motivated to
hear and/or speak God’s message. It was about what could we do differently to make this weekend the best
and most memorable weekend ever.
At closure, before we sent the new Fourth Dayers home, we wanted to have our egos boosted by words like
“my favorite part of the weekend was the food.” When we heard those words knew we met our goal for the
weekend. But where was Christ in that goal? The Cursillo weekend is more than the food, and Cursillo is more
than the weekend. Cursillo is a lay movement of the Church. Cursillo has it’s its own method; a method
inspired by the Holy Spirit.
We know that the authors of each book of the Bible were inspired by the Spirit of God. The Cursillo method is
also inspired by the same Holy Spirit. We should not alter it. The temptation is great to add a nice touch here,
and maybe remove or place less emphasis on something over there. We personalize it. We make it in our
own image and likeness instead of the Spirit’s inspired Cursillo method. Our ego may tell us the changes we
make are inspired by the Holy Spirit, and will make a better weekend. And therein lies one of the potential
problems. We as a team should be concentrating on preparing the participants to be leaven in their
environments and to spread the Gospel to all peoples. We should let the established process work, not spend
time and energy trying to alter it or give it our special touch. If each new team implements one nice new idea,
we soon have a hodgepodge method that is no longer Cursillo. Who knows where the newly formed
movement will go.
I think of what began to happen to our Church 400-500 years ago, when Martin Luther and the other
protestant leaders may have started out making a few “nice” changes. That initial break from the authentic
Catholic Church has led to tens of thousands of different Christian denominations.
Cursillo is a movement of the Church. We cannot emphasize this enough. This means the Cursillo movement
seeks to fulfill the mission of the Church. The mission of the Church in society is to preach the Word, to offer
the forgiveness of sins and reconciliation, and offer to satisfy the hunger of the human heart to know and
serve God.
The purpose of Cursillo is proclamation of the Word of God that might lead others to a true conversion and
satisfy the longing of the hungry heart.

Cursillo seeks to help others BE followers of Christ through a life of sacrifice and ever deepening communion
with the Father. The fruits of this relationship are the sharing of these spiritual gifts with others. Once again
this is the mission of the Church.
Vatican II spoke about growing in our relationship with God in order to not only help ourselves, but also to
share and encourage this with the world, so that all become the leaven in the world. What does this mean? It
simply means there is no distinction between Christ and the Church, Christ and the Cursillo or the Church and
Cursillo. If we are true to the essence of the Cursillo then we are following Jesus, because the work of Cursillo
is Christ’s work.
St. Paul tells us in I Corinthians that we are all part of the Mystical Body and each given specific gifts. When
we use these gifts within the Cursillo movement, we are God’s co-workers and others will recognize us as
Disciples of Christ. When we interact in our environments, we are witness in our environments. Everything we
say and do is a reflection of Christ and the Church. The Cursillo movement cannot be independent from the
Church or Jesus.
There is no Christ “OR” Cursillo. Without Christ, there is no authentic Cursillo.
The THREE DAY COMMITTEE has been busy preparing manuals for the weekend team
leaders and service team. We will be ready to serve as needed. The School of Leaders has been a
great resource for our on-going formation and how to have an active 4th day Cursillo community

Lenten Day of Reflection Recap
Held at the Chancery on March 7, Father Mark Smith, Pastor of St. Joseph in Westphalia presented on “The Importance
of Fasting and Sacrifice for a Spiritual Lent” and Father Pat Shortt, Pastor of Our Lady of Snows in Mary’s Home
presented on “Reconcilliation-Our Guide to Forgiveness”.
Father Mark asked the attendees what things they were giving up during Lent or had given up in the past. Many of us
had similar answers ranging from sweets to TV to judging others to complaining.
After we came up with a list, he asked us “Why do we fast?” We fast for a number of reasons,
1. Discipline
2. Atonement for our sins
3. Remembering the poor
4. Preparation to celebrate Easter
5. Improving our relationship with God
When we fast, we should fast from the good and pleasureable things God gives us in our lives. Giving up bad things
like gossiping, foul language, or judging others are things we shouldn’t be doing anyway. Lent does provide us a
cleansing period that hopefully by giving up those things for 40 days, we won’t do them again.
We learned that the 3 disciplines of Lent: fasting, almsgiving, and prayer help us to be more spiritual, deepening our
relationship with God and our neighbors. When we are of service to others, we realize God has provided us with our
lives and our abilities. When we save money from fasting and can give that savings to the poor thru prayer, we
complete our 3 disciplines of Lent. Consider what you gave up for Lent. Was it drawing you closer to Christ and
helping others or merely something only to help you?
As Cursillistas, we know there are more opportunities than Lent to fast. We can fast, do almsgiving and pray as Palanca
for special intentions throughout the year, but when we do, make sure it is significant. And when we encounter
temptation from the Evil One as Christ did, ask for God’s help through prayer to gain strength. If we aren’t tempted,
then maybe we are not fasting enough.
Father Pat Shortt, previous Cursillo Spiritual Director from 1980-2000, discussed Reconcilliation and how thru our
confession we can put our life and our life with our neighbor back in order. Like the Prodigal Son, we are always
invited back to our Father and He will always welcome us back.
We need to spend time in prayer to look at our sins to figure out why we sin and how we are going to change. Through
conversion and confession we can celebrate our renewed relationship with God.
Father Pat explained that the role of the priest is as important as the role of the penitent. It is good to have a confessor
that you can really sit down and talk with about what is broken in your life. Plan ahead to have specific instances to
have a conversation with your confessor, don’t just have a “grocery list” of past sins as they have already been forgiven.
Then, celebrate with joy like the father did with the prodigal son, celebrating our return to Christ!

Diocese Parish Contacts for Cursillo
The Parish Contact maintains a list of Cursillistas in their area and communicates information to them as needed.
Our goal is to improve communications, to maintain and build better relationships between all our parishes so that we can
strengthen our Jefferson City Diocese Cursillo Movement. In some areas we have several parishes combined with one
Parish Contact, and it would be great to have more help!
If your parish is not listed and you are interested in being a parish contact, please contact Marcia Doll, Postcursillo Chair
at 573-999-5066 or [email protected].
The following are your fellow Cursillistas that so generously donate their time and talent to our movement! Thank you!!!
