Read this! At long last...One of the world’s best bowlers finally agrees with us that no two sets are exactly the same. He is not talking about Aero Bowls!

Lawn bowls belonging to Team Scotland bowler Paul Foster have been stolen from a bowling club in Ayrshire. Police are investigating a break-in at Troon Portland Bowling Club, where he trains, on Monday afternoon. The three bowls taken were part of a set the four-times world champion has been playing and practicing with exclusively since April.

He said he was devastated and would try to replace them but that no two sets are exactly the same. The bowler added: “I just want to get the bowls back. Even if someone just comes along and just leaves the bowls at the club without anybody knowing I wouldn’t take it any further because I would just be so pleased to get them back.”

Paul Foster was named as part of the Scottish bowling team for Glasgow 2014 earlier this year The bowls taken were blue

with white speckling and feature a distinct picture of Kelvin Hall and the “Henselite” logo. A black and green bag with “Henselite” written on it was also taken.

One remaining bowl from the set had been removed from the trolley bag and left behind in the club locker room.

Foster, 41, a gold medallist in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, said: “Taking three bowls is no use to them, and having one is obviously no use to me.”

“ These bowls were specially shipped over in April for me to use at the Commonwealth Games and I’ve been practicing with them for the last three months, day-in day-out, to get completely used to them and ready for Glasgow.”

“ I’m now trying to get another set of the same make and model but even if I do, I know that you won’t ever get two sets of bowls that are a hundred percent the same.”

The former world indoor champion said he was at a complete loss as to who would want to steal his bowls.”This is obviously devastating to me and I spent the whole of last night thinking about who it could be, but I’ve got no idea,” he said.

“ But with the Commonwealth Games starting in a fortnight’s time I need to try and get over it in the next few days and get focused again. But it’s easier said than done.”

Had Paul Foster used Aero Bowls, just like any other Aero Player he would not have cared two hoots as EVERY SET OF AN AERO MODEL IS GUARANTEED THE SAME ... so if Kelvin Kerkow, Brett Wilkie or Aron Sherriff can’t tell one

set of the same model from the next Paul Foster couldn’t either.

BOWLS NSW • JUL-AUG 2014 3

It may not be snowing precisely in your part of the State but no doubt you are dealing with the winds and chills off the snowfields. Nevertheless I feel confident such conditions will not dampen the

enthusiasm of those of you about to make your way to State Pennant final venues. Firstly congratulations to all players who have been involved in play-offs to date. Your participation is what makes the game and I hope you have enjoyed your part in the event. To those of you who progress on to the finals, all the very best.

There has been a lot happening. The input of feed-back data from the Boundary Discussion Paper sub-missions are nearing completion and thanks must go to our volunteers, John Chalker and Michael Schwarcz, who undertook this task. Scrutiny of this data will allow us to progress to the next stage of information collec-tion and collation. Your Board will circularise develop-ments. Coincidentally the new Minister for Sport and Recreation, The Hon Stuart Ayres MP, called upon State sporting organisations to contribute to a study into the future needs of sport infrastructure in NSW so we feel we are moving in the right direction. With your help, we can provide worthwhile feedback to the Minister at the same time as doing our best for the future of bowls.

One sad note to report is the devastation of the Ardlethan BC by fire recently. Ardlethan faces the task of rebuilding their clubhouse – vital not only to their bowling members but to the whole community who depend on the Club as their hub. We are monitoring the situation closely. For the immediate moment, the relevant parties are rallying and things are in hand but in time the club will need the support of fellow clubs and community-minded citizens. We will keep you up to date as the situation develops.

I take the opportunity to sincerely thank Lake Conjola and Milton-Ulladulla BCs who were such sublime hosts for the Senior Inter-Zone event in May. It was an incredible effort much appreciated by all who attended.

Most recently we have had a couple of big events. Many of you will have been rooting for our delegates to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and would have been keen to see them perform on the world stage. For those of you who prefer a live game, then could have made your way to Davistown for the NSW Legends v Greenkeepers clash on 28 July. Many greats and just as many greenkeepers wishing to try out against these legends for the glory of their profession.

Before moving on through the rest of this magazine edition, I exhort you to take a moment and see if there isn’t someone you know who fits the bill as a terrific nominee for our 2014 Volunteer Awards. The nomina-tion form and guidelines are on our website. What we need from you is the name of this worthy person and why you think they deserve recognition.

President’s Welcome

Lawn bowls’ future stars were on show at Warilla Bowling Club during the 2014 NSW

State Junior Championships from 7th to 12th July. The Blue Ribbon Singles event is always the first to be played at the Championships and the sectional play was hotly contested this year with all of the sections going down to the last round with some tight matches determining who would play in the semi finals. The four remain-ing players from the first day who came from the four corners of the state were Jono Davis (Dubbo Railway), Luke Jones (Ballina), Jay Breust (Narooma) and the first ever female Singles semi-finalist Ellen Ryan (Cabramatta).

All four players brought their A games to the semi finals which saw the crowd amazed by the tal-ent of such young players as Davis defeated Jones 31–20 and Ryan de-feated Breust 31–27.

For 14-year-old Davis this was his second final (Runner Up in 2012) and for Ryan her first. With history to be made with either the youngest Champion or first female Champion, the stage was set for an historic match. Ellen jumped out to a 7–0 and then 14–4 lead before Jono found some brilliant touch and grabbed the lead to go ahead 20–14. Ellen continued to battle hard but that 6 shot lead would stay as Davis took the match 31–25 in a great match that showcased

not only junior bowls but the tal-ented young boys and girls that play it.

Next up was the Fours which again had the scorers tallying up the last round results from the sec-tional play to determine the semi finalists which included Zones 4, 10, 12 and 16. The Singles final-ists were both in action again in the fours semis looking to secure another finals berth but it wasn’t to be as Zone 10 defeated Zone 4 including Jono Davis 24–17 and the local Zone 16 defeated Zone 12 including Ellen Ryan 28–14.

In the Fours final both sides fought hard early for shots and had a number of dead ends but it was the Zone 10 side of Jordan >

W indang Bowling Club was the host of the inaugural Drakes

Pride NSW Junior Carnival. The carnival was open to all junior bowlers and consisted of 4 single day events giving the juniors a different format to play each day with new people and in different positions.

The carnival included an Open Pairs, Singles (Girls, Boys Under 15 and Boys 15–18 yrs), Single Entry Event (Juniors played in a new side and in different posi-tions each match) and wrapped up with a Turnaround Triples on the final day.

The carnival was designed around the concepts of participa-tion and enjoyment and each day had winner and runner-ups priz-es (Drakes Pride Packs) as well as a mix of novelty events over the 3 days which included: Best Card, a

Spider and Corner to Corner.State selectors were at each day

of the carnival and were excited with all of the new talent on dis-play. The mix of experienced jun-iors, new juniors and juniors who hadn’t been seen at state level be-fore was unbelievably with many of the more experienced junior bowlers lending a hand to the newer bowlers throughout the course of the carnival.

Points were awarded each day to the top 5 positions and then tallied up after the final event to determine the Player of the Car-nival. This award went all the way down to the final game on the last day with up to 5 players still in contention if results went a cer-tain way.

After winning her final game and winning the Turnaround Tri-ples event, St Johns Park junior female star Jamie-Lee Worsnop

was crowned the Player of the Carnival. The carnival also saw the introduction of a brand new award, the ‘Greg Helm – Spirit of Bowls’ Award which was to be awarded to the junior bowler who the state selectors decided had shown the true meaning

of what junior bowls is and had shown that spirit across the four days of the carnival. Bowls NSW CEO Greg Helm, who was a prominent junior bowler, was on hand to present the award to the inaugural winner, Warilla’s Madeline Goncalves.

Open Pairs Winners: Lauren Shaw and Sam Hatch-Caccamo,

R/U: Kate Davis and Mason Lewis.

Singles Girls W: Molly Wilton, R/U: Jamie-Lee Worsnop.

Boys Under 15 W: Jono Davis, R/U: Corey Pethebridge.

Boys 15–18 yrs W: Luke Jones, R/U: Danyon Christie.

Single Entry

Top 5: Danyon Christie, Jayden Moody, Luke Grainger, Nick

Evans and Jayden Gebbie.

Turnaround Triples Winners: Jamie-Lee Worsnop, Dylan Skinner and Dawn

Hayman, R/U: Blake Mitchell, Shaun Mitchell and Jono Davis.

The true spirit of Junior Bowls

Peisley, Kyle Breese, Sam Hatch-Caccamo and Mason Lewis who grabbed the final’s first real lead, 13–4 after 10 ends. The score was then 15–6 before the Zone 16 side of Jayden Gebbie, Danyon Chris-tie, Jordan Taylor and Dylan Skin-ner put together 3 ends and 14 shots to rocket them into the lead, a lead that they would never re-linquish as much as Zone 10 kept trying to battle their way back into the game. Zone 16 finished with a 27–16 victory to claim the Fours Championship.

The Pairs was the final event of the Championships as the junior bowls talent continued to shine inside the Warilla Indoor Com-plex. Following the sectional play some familiar faces once again popped up in the semi finals, from the Singles and Fours finals completed earlier in the Champi-onships. The semi finalists were Jayden Gebbie and Dylan Skinner (Zone 16), Luke Helson and Isaac Rayner (Zone 8), Sam Hatch-Cac-camo and Mason Lewis (Zone 10) and Ethan Mills and Ellen Ryan (Zone 12).

Semi-final action saw every-thing that can be expected from junior bowls with plenty of shot making, high fives, yelling and

great sportsmanship across the board. Both matches were hotly contested but two clear winners ran away with each match to book their finals berth: Zone 16 defeated Zone 8 (25–9) and Zone 10 defeated Zone 12 (28–9).

After securing the Fours Cham-pionship only 2 days earlier the boys from Zone 16 were looking to make it 2 titles in 3 days but the Zone 10 boys were determined to win their first after being defeated in the semi-final of the Fours.

Both sides came into the final firing and the game was close for the majority of the final until af-ter 13 ends Hatch-Caccamo and Lewis strung together a few ends and pushed their advantage. In the end the Zone 10 pair ran out 10-shot winners, claiming the final over Zone 16 (24–14) to be-come the 2014 NSW Junior Pairs Champions.

The entire event was played in the fantastic Warilla Indoor Com-plex due to a number of reasons but the main reason being the welfare of all the junior bowlers participating. Bowls NSW would like to extend a big thanks to Wa-rilla Bowling Club for their amaz-ing efforts and ongoing support to bowls across NSW.

In one of the tightest test series in years NSW had to fight all the way to regain the Inter-

state Shield contested each year between NSW and Queensland. Toombul BC in Qld hosted this year’s event from 30 June to 2 July on fast greens in blustery condi-tions to keep all their players on their toes.

The opening day saw NSW jump out early and secure wins in 3 of the opening four matches (Boys Triples, Boys Pairs and Girls Pairs). In the afternoon Qld’s Braiden Leese provided the Maroons with some hope in the Boys as he had a comeback win over Dylan Skin-ner. With the boys also trailing in the fours it looked as though Qld might clench a first test tie, but the NSW boy’s never gave in and fought all the way to grab a 1 shot victory and claim the first test.

Jamie-Lee Worsnop set up an exciting finish in the girl’s first test when she claimed the singles rub-ber 21-19 but it wasn’t to be for

the girls as Qld snuck home in the fours 17-16 to draw the first test.

The second day schedule had 3 rounds of play which included the entire Second Test and first half of the Third Test. The opening matches of the day saw a clean split with 2 matches apiece to NSW and Qld, NSW taking both Pairs as Qld secured wins in the Triples.

The NSW girls hit the ground running in the second session and secured both matches winning the Singles 21–12 and the Fours 21–11 to take the Second Test and mo-mentum heading into the final test.

Qld boys cheered on as always by the large local crowd gathered mo-mentum after the first break and powered home to defeat NSW in the Singles 21–16 and Fours 12–8 to clinch the Second Test and square the series with the final Test to de-termine the winner.

With both NSW and Qld deter-mine to lift the shields, the third ses-sion of the day was always going to

see some fireworks and the players didn’t disappoint, with the crowd on the edge of their seats and many viewing back in NSW from the Bowls NSW live Facebook feed left with small amount of fingernails.

The Blues grabbed the opening ascendancy in all four matches and didn’t let go. With the shadows starting to cover the green and tem-peratures dropping, the intensity stayed at an all time high and NSW powered to a strong series position. NSW won all matches contested in the session with victory in the Boys Pairs 23–14, Boys Triples 24–13, Girls Pairs 19–14 and Girls Triples 14–11.

Heading into the final day and final session NSW had two hands firmly on the Girls’s shield after leading the series 1.5 tests to 0.5 test and already ensured at least a draw in the final test. The boys situation was a little less clear cut as the series was tied at a test apiece but NSW had the upper hand winning the final 2 matches on the second day.

They would need to win or draw 1 match or keep the scores close to maintain their superior shot margin to lift the shield. The Girls capped off a memorable series by winning both matches and taking the series 2.5 tests to 0.5 tests.

All eyes then turned to the Boys and after trailing by over 10 shots

at one stage Jono Davis fought back in his singles encounter to go down by only 6 to allow some breathing space for the Fours.

The Boys Fours then held on and kept their game close eventu-ally going down 14–11 but doing enough to secure the overall series victory for NSW.

Zone 10 (Sydney North West) has survived a first-round scare, scraping into the final to suc-cessfully defend its Senior In-ter-Zone Sides Championship title, claiming the 2014 Cham-pionship final at Milton Ulla-dulla Bowling Club.

Zone 2 (Newcastle) opened the scoring in the final leading 9–0 before Zone 10 countered scoring 5, 5, 4 and 1 to lead 15–9.

Zone 10 then maintained the momentum to build a strong lead in the middle stages of the match before a spirited fight back saw Zone 2 close to with-in 6 shots after 40 ends. Zone 10 however got the best of the next 10 ends, the lead stretch-ing back to 20 shots by the 50th end, with Zone 10 holding off all challenges in the closing stages to take the match 71–53.

The 2013 Champions cam-paign for back to back titles appeared to have been scup-pered in the opening match of the championship after Zone 13 turned in a sublime per-formance to take their match 58–47. Zone 13, however, were unable to win their remaining two matches in sectional play, with Zone 10 progressing on count back ahead of hosts Zone 7 on count back of margin.

Zone 10 progressed to the fi-nal after a hard fought 57–55

victory over Zone 6 in the semi-final. Zone 10 had the better of the opening stages of the match before Zone 6 closed the gap and then edged into the lead, before the scores were locked at 55–55 with two ends to play. Zone 10 then closed out the match, scoring singles on the closing two ends.

Zone 6 also claimed their section on count back. Zone 8 had won both matches on the opening day (including a victory over Zone 6), but the section was blown open when previously winless Zone 3 fought back from a deficit in their round 3 match with Zone 8, claiming victory on the very last bowl. Zone 6 progressed by virtue of two very strong wins.

The play at Lake Conjola BC saw Zone 2 (Newcastle) and Zone 16 (Illawarra) clash in the semi finals, both winning their sections undefeated. Newcastle opened the semi final strongly before Illawarra closed the gap, only to see Newcastle again power away to claim a 64–51 victory.

Bowls NSW thanks Milton Ul-ladulla and Lake Conjola BCs for their magnificent efforts in hosting the Championships.

The 2015 Senior Inter-Zone will be held in Zone 9 (Sydney Northern).

Creating a bully-free and harassment-free sport-ing environment for every bowler at every

club is one of our missions. We are fortunate to have one of the most inclusive of all sports, provid-ing competitive and recreational opportunities for everyone. The challenge that now lies ahead is to extend that opportunity to inside the four walls of our clubs. Having great dispute resolution processes in place is one way to create that environment. Gone are the days, (thank goodness) that a rampant board member can hand out ‘front the board’ letters like confetti.

If great systems are in place, dis-putes can be resolved in a way that makes the club stronger and gives confidence to all members,

Sports Development: One of our aims for the sport

making their membership more valuable. Members need to un-derstand which behaviours are acceptable and which are not, and also the consequences of not play-ing their part in the club as an active member, by transgressing. This is all a part of corporate governance, which is the role of good boards. Creating a harassment and bully-free environment is absolutely one of the roles of the board.

Without great systems and pro-cesses in place, board members

leave themselves open to law suits that could potentially drag on for years and could also prove costly. Remember that if it is proved that you as a director, have acted outside the law, your insurance probably won’t cover you.

OUR OFFICEWe have a saying in our office, well it’s more of a credo actually, ‘First draft is king’. It is our way of ac-knowledging the effort that it takes to get something started. I think most of us that have ever tried to get something new started will ac-knowledge the toughest thing to do is to get it rolling. Pretty much everybody can edit, or suggest little improvements along the way, but getting it started is the real grind.

So ‘first draft is king’ is our way of

saying, never criticise anyone for having a crack, edits are easy, the real glory should go to the person that digs in first and gets the first draft written, or the idea fleshed out on paper so that everyone can add their ‘two-bobs’ worth.

‘First draft is king’ also extends to ideas. Credit should always go to the person that is brave enough to look a little silly by throwing up a new and possibly whacky idea that the group can build on, or mould to fit the occasion.

Another team philosophy we apply is ‘everyone is special needs’. From time to time in the history of our work team we have had team members marked as ‘special needs’ for one reason or another. As we have all got to know each other though it soon became ap-parent that every member of the group is a little quirky, requiring special treatment in some way, or requires some extra latitude in one area or another. When it all comes down to it, if we all treat each other with respect, patience and a level of equanimity, every workplace becomes healthier and safer and isn’t that what you would want your workplace to be?

LINDFIELD BOWLING CLUB

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

Lindfield Bowling Club (LBC) is seeking Expressions of Interest from any Bowling Club registered with Bowls NSW interested in re-locating their home base bowling activities to the excellent bowling green facilities of the LBC, located in leafy East Lindfield.

LBC was established in the 1950s, is highly respected, has a great bowling tradition having won the Zone One flag on 2 oc-casions. The three bowling greens and club house are in excellent condition and the property has allocated parking access for 80 vehicles.

LBC has both a men’s and wom-en’s club and plays predominant-ly mixed bowls.

The property holdings of LBC are freehold and the club is finan-cially sound with healthy invested term deposits.

In recent times, like many other clubs, LBC has experienced a re-duction in player numbers to an extent which suggests in time the

club may close from lack of par-ticipation before lack of finances.

Respecting the returned service persons who created this great club with personal exertion and their own finances the current membership does not wish to see the club’s valued greens lost to bowls for ever. This has created an unintended opportunity for our fellow bowling community to join us at Lindfield and become a regular user or part/owner of our magnificent club knowing that the club has long term solid finan-cial security. We have chosen to take this path before considering other contingency options that are available to our club. At this time LBC will not consider any op-tion involving the disposal of LBC assets.

This is an opportunity for any of our bowling neighbours to dis-cuss with us how their club may be able to take advantage of the LBC facilities. In the first instance we invite open ended informal

discussion from any club. We have no hidden agenda and encour-age discussion on joint use of our facility, club merger or any other solution that will benefit the rel-evant parties. This option may not present itself again should LBC pursue other options. Refer to our website for an expanded

version of this paragraph.

Interested parties may in the first place ring Leo Vilensky 0411237384 or Bill McSwiggan 99242671 ah or contact the club via email [email protected].

LBC considers this offer closes on 30th October 2014.

date before we headed over to the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. It was at a place called Luke’s Benchmark.

C: Well done, Wayne, good memory, spot on!

CG: Did you ever think it would lead to what it is today?

W: From when we first started off as friends I’d say no because I was in a relationship at the time but when I become single the fu-ture together with Claire definitely looked brighter.

C: No, never would have thought this is where we would be today.

CG: Best bowler out of you two?W: ME! Definitely me!C: Well, obviously him, then, haha.

CG: Greatest memory together?W: Well, the birth of our beautiful

daughter Ruby and our amazing

Wedding Day are the highlights. A special mention would have to be sharing the Commonwealth Games in Delhi together. (CG – must have been a pretty special ‘friendly’ date before the Comm Games.)

C: Our Wedding Day and the day Wayne proposed to me will always be very special days.

CG: How do you feel when watching the other play bowls?

W: Very nervous. I watched Claire on live stream in the Aust Indoors Semi a few years ago and then flew up to watch the final to surprise her.

C: Definitely nervous, more so because you have no control over how they play. Always wanting them to win though.

CG: How do you go playing mixed pairs together?

W: Haha good but no good! We played in the Aust Open Mixed Pairs Semi last year and Claire

smiles too much especially when not playing well haha. Then she gets grumpy at me for getting grumpy, continually tells me to smile!

C: Haha we have only played that one event and I laughed the whole time. I couldn’t do a thing right and Wayne didn’t find the funny side of it. We will definitely give it another crack though!

CG: Most influential people in each of your lives?

W: Would have to be my father and family, Claire and then my lifelong friends at Taren Point.

C: Turls and a number of people over the years. I have a few very close friends from outside of bowls too.

CG: Where do you see the game of bowls in 20 years time?

W: Primetime TV, Club mem-berships rising and for all states to be on the same page and working together.

C: A much younger person’s sport. A quicker format and less time-consuming as in weekends taken up over the calendar year.

CG: Claire, I know you are an amazing cook but who washes all the dishes?

W: I do! But ‘apparently’ I don’t stack the dishwasher correctly so Claire says, if that’s even possible!

C: Yes, Wayne does do all the dishes haha but not right! He can’t stack them – to save his life. Wayne goes little bowl, big plate, small bowl, big plate, small plate, big plate, big bowl haha.

CG: Finally and then I will give you back to Ruby: Claire, how do you feel when Wayne uses all your shampoo?

C: Haha it’s worse when he uses my hair gel!

Thanks heaps, guys, really appre-ciate you both giving up your time because I know how busy you are.

BOWLS NSW • JUL-AUG 201416

more than a game” was developed as the participants in the focus groups believed that our market-ing should highlight the sociability of the game and promote bowls as “more than just a sport”.

CEO, Greg Helm is confident our new branding will assist us in changing present attitudes and perceptions that lawn bowls is an

older person’s game and will help us make the game more appealing to the younger demographic as well as our valued members and corpo-rate partners.

The next step for the marketing team is to roll-out the new logo and branding across our current marketing collateral, online as-sets and merchandise. This will

happen over the next 3–6 months, ensuring we achieve a consistent “look and feel” and a professional and modern image in the market place. Lastly, a big thank you to all those who participated in the focus groups. We appreciate you making time in your busy sched-ules to assist us with our research-project.

Over the past 12 months, Communi-cation has been one of the main strategic

priorities of Bowls NSW.It has been our aim to improve

the lines of internal communica-tion with our members and clubs as well as build the capacity of the Association to communicate ex-ternally to the wider community in order to promote and market the sport of bowls.

A significant change was made earlier this year to meet these stra-tegic aims by setting up an organi-sational structure to establish a new Communications and Marketing Dept. Since April, the new Commu-nications and Marketing team have been busy conducting research into our branding to determine how we can update our image to move the Association forward.

This Research was conducted through focus groups sessions (7 groups, with over 40 participants)throughout the month of May.

The participants included key stakeholders; from current bowl-ers, juniors, non bowlers, staff, media and journalists, to Club Managers and Administration staff. The participants were asked to share their thoughts and feed-back on a number of discussion topics centred around proposed key marketing messages and the general direction of the sport.

The insights and recommen-dations gained through the fo-cusgroup research were used to create a new logo and selection of branding ads. Overall, the fo-cus group participants wanted to see a more modern logo that is easily identifiable as a bowl. The new logo features a stylised out-line of a bowl, created using the NSW state colours. Our new key message, “Love what you play, It’s

Branding:

Focusing on our future

LOVE WHAT YOU PLAY, IT’S MORE THAN A GAME

John Orme was a snooker player and was pretty good at it. He competed for the better part of 30 years. He was invited to play in Aloha last year by a friend from the local bowling club and after practising for a few weeks won his way to Hawaii to compete in the finals. Now he is a fully fledged bowling member and is looking around for a non-bowler to enter the 2014 event with him. He said “after 30 years of playing snooker I had a garbage bag full of plastic trophies. After a few weeks of playing bowls I had a trip to Hawaii. I’m hooked.”

Aloha bowls is a great way for your club to promote itself and give your players a chance to fly to Hawaii for a few days playing bowls, and get new members along the way. It costs $20 per player to enter the event, playoffs will occur at a club near you between the 11th and the 19th of October. It is a five bowls pairs event with teams having a maximum of one regis-tered bowler per team. Aloha is a great way to introduce new people to the game at your club.

THE KOTARA TRIO OF WAYNE SQUIRES, LOGAN BROWN AND KEIRAN LOTT have won the Club’s first Zone 2 Triples Championship since 1985.

In a keenly contested Final they defeated the Beresfield trio of Albie Ainscow, Glen Solomons and Mick Brown 25–20, after racing to a 17–5

lead early in the match. Both semi-finals were close hard fought affairs with Lott’s team edg-ing out Daniel Hill, former St Johns Park player Lee Such and NSW State representative Terry Antram (Soldiers Point) 23–21. Brown’s team downed the strong Valentine trio of Owen Jef-ferson, Ross Levido and Bill Ahoy 23–20.

RAYMOND TERRACE HAVE BECOME THE FIRST CLUB since Soldiers Point in 2007 to complete the Saturday – Mid-Week Zone 2 No.1 Grade Pennant double. They led all the way in the Final to comfortably defeat Soldiers Point 66–59, winning on all three rinks.

Soldiers Point after a slow start fought back to trail by only 2 shots mid-way through the match, but the Jets players dominated the later stages of the game. The quartet of Shaun Richards, Jamie Minter, Shane Evans and Lennon Scott starred in the win defeating John Collins, Bob Dunn, Neville Downes and Daniel Hill 22–12. The other

two rinks were close hard fought affairs with Jim Towers, Anthony Ellercamp, Michael Abel and Australian representative Matthew Baus edging out Stephen Grandsen, Reg Smith, David King and Terry Antram 23–21. AROUND THE ZONES

NEW ENGLAND JUNIORS really excelled themselves in the Zone 3 playoffs held at Manilla on 24th–25th May, winning all events easily. New England’s junior bowler of the year, Nick Ellem (Glen Innes), was too strong for Zac Grudgfield (Ma-

AROUND THE ZONES

THE 60 YEARS DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHURCH LAWN BOWLS DAY brought players to Sydney from a number of country towns as well as from all parts of Sydney.

The weather was kind no doubt as a result of a few well spoken words at the pulpit

on the previous day. Players were joined by many church dignitaries including the newly appointed State Moderator Rev. Mark Powell. The field of play-ers filled all rinks on one of the greens at North Sydney Bowling Club which has hosted the Event for all but one of the past 60

years. The day was well organ-ised by Doug Bennetts OAM who has been doing so for the past 38 years. Doug is 93 years of age but looks and acts as though he is only 70; what a wonderful asset to both the church and lawn bowls!

The day was also timing for

the AGM of the Bowls Group which saw Tim Hinitt hand over the role of President to Ian Trantor of West Pymble BC. Doug Bennetts was re-elected to the role of Secretary which was given resounding applause from the members. A great occasion enjoyed by many.

THE MOST INTERESTING THING about this match is a continuing development of lawn bowls as a sports subject within a number of Associated Schools in Sydney.

Knox College students regularly train one or two days each week and play competitively amongst themselves on Saturday morn-ings at Warrawee Bowling Club. This has been going on for many years under the guidance of their Bowls Sports-master Chris Osberg and with the support of Len Hyde, Club President and well known coach.

The Trinity boys had a long distance to travel from Strathfield to Warrawee but happy in the knowledge that in the return match it will be the Knox team’s turn to go to their home club.

The match was indeed exciting with the tape measure being

used on many occasions. The boys played Three Bowl Pairs which is an excellent game keep-ing all players well involved at all times and enjoyed by everyone. Sixteen- year-old school boys are indeed firing on all cylinders and there were many drives, some of which sent bowls and the jack fly-ing to many parts of the green.

The competition involved five rinks with the master and mistress in charge of the Trinity team moving around from rink to rink giving their boys lots of encouragement.

The game lasted about 90 min-utes and was won by Knox.

All players were supplied with bowls of which Warrawee has an excellent selection and enough to equip over 100 players and also used to support their growing army of barefoot bowlers on Friday evenings.

The Southern Tablelands DBA got one up on the NDBA when they defeated the District at Campbelltown. They were victorious 4 rinks to 2. The NDBA will play against Zone 12 on Sunday 20th July 2014 at Cabramatta.

The 2014 Zone 5 Pennant season has been completed last weekend and the NDBA were suc-cessful in the top two grades. The No 1 Grade was a win for Austral. Penrith will go to Port Macquarie to compete in the No2 Grade after their good win. Up at Springwood, the WDBA team Molong were the winners of the No 3 Grade. In the No4 Grade, the STDBA team Crookwell were victorious.

The LVDBA team Canowindra were undefeated in their win in the No5 Grade. Lawson from the Blue Mountains was also undefeated and ended up with ten points +139 in the No 6 Grade and should have a good chance in Ballina.

And finally Gulgong were the winners in the No7 Grade. Every District in the Zone had a win which doesn’t happen very often.

President of the NDBA twice, Patron and Life Member Ken Thomas has decided to go to greener pastures (Urunga) to live. Ken held most positions in the NDBA committee and the NDBA Executive. Delegates and Members pass on our thanks for your commitment and wish you all the best in the future.

The annual John Hewett Shield was played at Penrith and the winners were Mark Lewis, Graeme Hughes and Matt Peterson with 3 wins + 65, second was Ral Lewis, Tim Whalan and Jamen Lewis with 3 wins + 50 and Mick O’Hare, Greg Felton and Glenn Chandler were third with 3 wins + 39.

DURAL MEN’S BOWLING CLUB have moved into the 21st Century. On Saturday 21st of June 2014 history was made at Dural Country Club, Lawn Bowls Club when women and men played together for the first time on a Saturday and now play mixed uniform social bowls on Saturday afternoons. Saturday afternoon was the domain of men only and still is in most clubs. Whilst we

were still getting a fair turn out of men bowlers on Saturdays the women numbers were dwindling due to more women working today than did 20 years ago and there were women who wanted to play lawn bowls but were unable to as no women’s bowls were played on Satur-days, it was decided, after much discussion, to let the women play with the men. Whilst it has been only going for a few weeks,

3 new women have joined up and enquires from more wom-en are coming in. Also some of our previous players are coming back. The women bowlers have been well received by the men bowlers and no men bowlers have left because of it.

If any women would like to play on Saturdays or learn to play lawn bowls please contact Robyn Cook 9836 0831 for free lessons.

THE MAJOR PAIRS CHAMPION-SHIP has reached a conclusion and defending Champions Paul Leverett and John Archer were the first team to reach the Final.

Paul and John had a tough win over a very determined and gutsy Henry Hua and Mike Woodall. Henry and Mike shot to an 8–0 lead and looked every bit as though they could take out the match with a great upset victory.

Paul and John, the Champions they are though, had different ideas. They consistently nar-rowed the margin over the mid-dle 12 ends and finally took the lead on the 17th end. With 2 ends

to play, they had a handy 18–13 command over the game. Henry and Mike attacked admirably, taking a 2 on the 20th end and, needing a 3 on the last, fell just short with 2 shots on the final end to lose by only 1 shot.

In the other semi-final the new pairing Don Stephens and Martin Billam led 9–6 over the fancied pair of Gary Havron and Steve Partridge after 12 ends but two multiples in ends 13 and 14 saw the gap blow out and despite a spirited challenge Don and Mar-tin proceeded to the final.

The final was played in less than ideal circumstances on Sunday

with a gusting wind making play-ing conditions difficult.

However both sides showed steely determination and in a very tight tussle Don and Martin held a slight advantage after 10 ends to lead 7–6. The next 3 ends saw both sides score 2 shots each but from this point the experience of the defending champions was the deciding factor with John and Paul going on to defend their title 23–14.

It was a terrific and thrilling game which had all the specta-tors entertained for the entire match.

Well done to both teams.

Under perfect sunny skies but very blustery conditions, Saturday 28th June saw the Zone 10 Pennant Playoffs held at Carlingford, The Hills and Toongabbie Bowling Clubs.

Congratulations to all Clubs that made the finals, and to the Grade winners, great efforts and good luck in representing both your Club and Zone 10 at the State Playoffs.

My “fearless” tipping ruf-fled a few feathers from various Clubs and whether that helped spur them on to bigger and bet-ter things is open to debate, but Putney Tennyson (Grade 6) and Castle Hill (Grade 7) proved me wrong by claiming the cher-ished Zone Champion flags in No 6 and No 7s. The rest of the grades – 1 to 5 – all managed to “salute” for me. (Wish I had that much success on the horses!!) AROUND THE ZONES

REVESBY WORKERS PENNANT TEAMS had a fairly successful season this year with 3 of our 5 teams qualifying for the zone 12 sectional play-offs that were held at St Johns Park on the weekend of 28th–29th June.

This was an excellent overall result with our other 2 teams just missing out to also qualify.

The play-offs were played in the most difficult conditions that your scribe has ever been involved with. Play on the Saturday was called off in the afternoon when the weather became so bad it was impos-sible to play.

It did resume later which enabled all the day’s games to be finished and games to start on Sunday as scheduled. So as they say in the business “The show must go on” so on it went.

First up our grade 5s on Sat-urday morning put up a great show and was all over their Chester Hill opponents but somehow went down by a sin-gle shot 59–58 – a disappoint-ing start to the day. However our 7/1s saved the morning session with a great victory over Ingleburn coming out winners 75–54.

By this time the wind was starting to get strong and just got worse as the p.m. session got into full swing. Our grade 7/2s made their 1st appearance (and last) at 1pm against St Johns Park and didn’t handle conditions well at all and were overrun by their opponents to the tune of 70–51. SJP were just too good on the day.

Our Grade 5s put their one point loss against Chester Hill behind them and took out their frustrations on the Belfield boys and got home by 6 shots. A good tonic. While these games were going our 7/1s were giving it to our local Picnic Pt. team and were proud winners over our friendly neighbours.

All players deserve full credit for their efforts in some of the worst conditions imaginable.

Sunday 29/6 weatherwise was still pretty awful – not ideal for bowls. Our 7/1s were the first to feel the might of their SJP counterparts but fought gal-lantly only to go down 77–66, a good match that could have gone either way. They finished runners-up in the zone, a very creditable performance.

We saved the best for last and thanks to our grade 5s we were to come away with the best prize we could win – yes, we defeated SJP on Sunday morn-ing by a magical 6 shots and when Zone President and RWC member Geoff Went worked out the pluses and minuses it was Revesby Workers who were in front of the rest with 11 shots to spare. Zone 12 champs! It didn’t come easy – Ray Hopkins team of Dave Kerry, “George Almighty”Ostermann and greenkeeper Bruce Kirkaldy were down 0–5, and 6–13 after 11 ends, it looked grim, but the whole team lifted to win 32–14 under terrible conditions.

Peter Chown and his team of Kip Royall, Doug Hawkins and Darryl Oehlmann kept their eye on the main board all the way and to their dismay found that in the mid stages we were behind by some 22 shots overall – they too were behind like Ray’s team.

Wardie and his boys – Spiff, John Banes andTroy Russell – also had their eyes on the board and as if by magic all our teams surged ahead like a tidal wave in those mid to final stages to overwhelm their opponents.

All the skips were happy with their team’s performances, but all gave special mention to “George Almighty”Ostermann who is having a great season whether playing bowls or golf.

George had a magical game and had the biggest smile on his face that will stay there till we get to Tamworth for the icing on the cake THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Good luck.

GRAHAM GOLLAN from Can-terbury-Bankstown BC tells us a rather unique event has occurred at the CBTandBC recently.

Young Gray Hemington won the Minor Singles. That in itself is not unusual as Gray is a very promising bowler.

However, he was preceded in this success by his Grandfather David Hemington who won it in 1984 and his father Graham Hemington in 2011.

This adds up to three genera-tions of one family’s success in the Minors. It should be men-tioned that Grandfather David won the Majors that same year (1984) and went on to win five more.

It is likely, given his current rate of improvement, that young Gray could add a Major or two to his career achievements before too long.

OUR LAST ROYAL EVENT, the Major Pairs final, was played in extremely windy conditions and saw Andrew Fogwell and Brian Pettersen playing last year’s runner ups Ryan Beattie and Pat Stapleton.

Both skips and directors of the club opposed each other on the green instead of in the board room.

The masterful draw bowling of Andrew in very tricky condi-tions complemented by the excellent on-shots and drives when required by Brian saw them take the title comfortably from their more fancied op-ponents running out winners 22–6.

Congratulations to the win-ners and to Pat and Ryan, hang in there third time lucky next year.

A SPECIAL MENTION FOR VINCE CALABRESE who entered the NSW division of the Austral-ian Indoor Singles at Warilla in June. Having drawn a world class bowler in the first round in Ali For-syth he was defeated in a tie-break result. This was not a defeat but a victory for someone who dares to enter these prestigious events. Good bowling, Vince. Ali Forsyth won all his remaining games to qualify.

16TH JUNE 2014, passed away after a lengthy illness. Pat was a well-known bowler and ad-ministrator in both men’s and women’s bowls. A life-member and director of our club for many years. Her knowledge and input to the club and the bowlers will be sadly missed and impossible to replace.

IN A SENSATIONAL SATURDAY AFTERNOON CONTEST between West Coffs men and a truly gun team from Park Beach skipped by accomplished Corey Daley, the host West Coffs club team came from ten shots down mid-game to hold their composure in the exciting closing ends to win 22–20.

Winning District Fours titles at West Coffs is hardly habit forming with their previous victory at this high-est level occurring in season 1991.

The West Coffs quartet of skip Ben Watson, Kent

Price, Barry Blight and Paul Newman were spurred on by a 100-plus team of vocal supporters as they clawed their way back in the contest almost at one shot each end, finally squaring the match 19-all on the 17th end.

West Coffs then collected one shot each at three of the four remaining ends while conceding just one shot to their gallant Park Beach opponents.

A brilliant game of lawn bowls fours played in the true spirit of sportsmanship between two great clubs.

ETTALONG TEAMS skipped by Danny McNeilly and Peter Freestone won their respec-tive semi-finals to set up an all Ettalong finals clash in the Bowls Central Coast Triples champion-ship played at The Entrance BC on Saturday 21st June 2014.

It was always going to be a tight contest with very little separating both teams in terms of talent and skill under the leadership of two experienced skippers. Peter Free-stone’s charges of Peter Wiblen and Graham Maier set the pace in the first half of the game to set up a 15–8 lead but Danny McNeilly’s boys of Karl Foster and Ian Tyer-man were not about to lie down and put together a telling three ends to level at 15-all after 15 ends. The Freestone trio responded in a high-standard game of draw bowling to lead 18–15 only to see their opposition come back to level at 18-all and then skip away to a 22–18 mini-break with just four ends remaining.

It was an arm wrestle, with the Freestone trio starting to gain the upper hand over the closing ends to draw within one shot with just two ends remaining. McNeilly’s team went into the last end with a two-shot break and it looked game, set and match when Mc-Neilly trailed the jack for four but Freestone drew third shot behind the jack and set up an opportunity to trail the jack with his last bowl to tie the scores and force an extra end. Freestone was confident he had played the perfect shot but it missed the jack by a whisker. Karl Foster, Ian Tyerman and Danny McNeilly had held on for a well deserved victory to become the 2014 Bowls Central Coast Triples champions and will now contest the State Finals later in the year.

It was an outstanding contest and the Sea Eagles had soared high in a game befitting of a final.

WHEN SIXTEEN ZONE CHAMPIONS from all parts of the State take to the greens at Ettalong Memorial BC to contest the Bowls NSW State titles in their respective disciplines it will be “Game On!” You are invited to be part of the spectacle and excitement as the action unfolds.SAT 18 OCT State Pairs and State Senior Pairs Rnd 1 / Quarter finals

IN AN ALL ETTALONG CENTRAL COAST SINGLES FINAL played at Halekulani BC Lee Trethowan looked to have the Common-wealth Games representative Aron Sherriff on the ropes when he led 28–24 only needing three shots for victory. But champions are never beaten and Sherriff lifted to square at 28-all and with Trethowan appearing to hold game at 29–28, Sherriff played a magical weighted bowl to take out his opponent’s shot bowls for a match-winning three to snare the title. It was a fitting result for Sher-riff who was on the eve of depart-ing to Glasgow to represent the “Green and Gold” in the coveted Singles and Pairs.

In the Seniors final The

Entrance’s Phil Flippence led Wyong’s Peter Redman for most of the game but Redman was always in touch and Flippence couldn’t afford to falter. Flippence gained a handy break to lead

27–21 but Redman got within two shots before Flippence ground his way to a 31–27 victory.

In the President’s Singles, for those pennant players in Grade 5 and below, it was a seesawing affair between Terrigal’s Alan Fillbrook and Bateau Bay’s Paul Hannagan. The lead changed on numerous occasions with Fill-brook poised for victory at 29–27 but Hannagan finished strongly winning 31–29.

Overall it was a day of outstand-ing bowls with all the finals being tightly contested in front of an appreciative crowd of spectators.

These Singles Champions will now contest the State finals at Et-talong Memorial BC on 20th–21st October 2014.

ALBION PARKOn Saturday 10th May Albion

Park had their pennant party. The member for Kiama Gareth

Ward came to present John Fer-guson a certificate from the State for winning the Australian over 60’s in 2012.

SHELLHARBOUR BOWLING CLUB held their last and very successful Open Pairs Tourna-ment on 16 and 17 June 2014.

The Club thanks all those bowlers who have participated for many years to make it a great tournament.

1st Place – Ron Gasparrini, Mal Pearson (Composite) 5W +36

2nd Place – Wes Falconer, Brian Harriott (Towradgi) 5W +31

3rd Place – Paul Robertson, Guy Vozza (Composite) 4W +39

4th Place – Stanley Cheetham, Richard Kirkpatrick (Albion Park) 4W +20

5th Place – Bob Johnson, An-thony Jones (Thirroul) 4W +20

6th Place – Bob Ryan, Frank Hornung (Shellharbour) 4W +19

THE 2014 PENNANT FINAL SE-RIES were completed in May and were sponsored again by Warilla Bowling Club. All grades were very keenly contested and some of the smaller clubs caused some upsets.

Grade No7, Berkeley defeated Dapto Citizens 75 to 55 in an upset result and considering that the club was not sure if it had enough players for 2 grades earlier this year, the result was outstanding.

Grade No6, Windang defeated Figtree RSL in a game that went down to the last bowl. Windang won 57 to 55. Once again Win-dang proved very strong in the lower grades.

Grade No5 in a surprise result, the joint venture club of Helens-

burgh/Scarborough Wombarra was successful over Dapto Citizens 64 to 61 with the last end having to be replayed. Considering that the Helensburgh club is closing at the end of the year and S/Wombarra have been struggling to keep going, it was a very pleasing result for the northern suburbs and hopefully the Helensburgh players will join S/Wombarra and allow them to keep operating into the future.

Grade No4, WPWC defeated Shellharbour 64 to 58 in a very good game of bowls.

Grade No3, Figtree RSL defeated Dapto Citizens 61 to 51; ‘Citoes’ have been close to winning grade 3 for the last 3 years but unfortunate-ly have not been able to do so.

Grade No2, Windang have finally managed to win and be promoted to Grade 1 after many near misses and some second place finishes over the last 7 years. The new uniforms the club used this year may have been just the thing to get them home in the grand final. They defeated Kiama 79 to 42 after jumping away to a flying start.

Grade No1, once again the 2 leading Zone clubs Warilla and Dapto Citizens clashed for the 7th year in a row. The game was close until about 4 ends to play when Warilla picked up 8 shots on 2 rinks to make a break which ‘Citoes’ could not peg back. The final score was 68 to 56.

THE 3 SINGLES EVENTS for this year were completed during June and once again proved to be very popular with the players, with the numbers up from last year. The 3 events were played at various clubs around the zone up until the semi-finals when all 3 events were played at Dapto Citizens Bowling Club. The conditions were perfect and the green was running at a nice 15 to 16 seconds allowing good bowls to be played.

Many upsets occurred from Round 1 in the Major Singles.

The semi-finalists were last year’s winner Brett Pieper from Figtree RSL, recently retired NSW skip Shane Garvey from WPWC, Dave

Wakeling and Paul Luke from Towradgi.

The two Towradgi players had a keen tussle, with Dave winning 31 to 24. In one of the best games of singles played for some time, Brett and Shane went shot for shot up to 26-all. Shane then held multiple shots on the next four ends only to see Brett play some brilliant shots to take the game 31 to 26.

In the final between Brett and Dave, Brett came out firing from the 1st end when he picked up a four, and never let Dave back into the game to win 31 to 11.

In the Presidents Reserve Singles, Scott Davidson from WPWC played Jamie Nabbe from Warilla

in a keenly contested game. There was little between the players for most of the game, with Jamie get-ting on top over the last few ends to win 31 to 24.

The Senior Singles was also a very good game of bowls between Geoff McGillivray from Warilla having his first serous attempt in the senior event (last year a bad back forced him out) and the much underrated Barry Hazelgrove from Thirroul.

Barry has not played a lot of Zone events the last couple of years, but has always been a very good singles player. Barry led for most of the game up to 27-all, when Geoff used his vast experience to win the last 3 ends to win 31 to 27.

ONCE AGAIN WARILLA BOWLING CLUB hosted the State Junior Championships in early July.

Zone 16 Juniors performed extremely well. The Fours team of Jayden Gebbie, Danyon Christie, Jordan Taylor and Dylan Skinner defeated the Zone 10 team by 27 to 16.

In the Pairs Jayden Gebbie and Dylan Skinner made the final but were defeated by the strong Zone 10 team of Sam Hatch-Caccamo and Mason Lewis by a score of 24 to 14.

The Zone 16 players are all playing Pennants, two of them are already in the No1 Grade and all of them will be players of the future for Zone 16.

BOWLS NSW • JUL-AUG 201432

It is this time of year that the NSW Bowling Greenkeepers Association announce our annual Greenkeeper of the

Year. For those that aren’t aware of this award, it is presented to the Greenkeeper who has not just outstanding greens, but also the greens’ surrounds, gardens, workshop and sufficient office management or paper work.

Nominees must be a member of the Association to be nomi-nated and be nominated by a fellow member, so in essence it is a peer recognised award. Being a previous winner I can say that this makes it that little bit more rewarding.

This year I was lucky enough to be on the judging panel. I really enjoyed going out and looking at some fantastic greens and back of house set ups that we have out there.

Volunteers of the association and a couple of retired Greeny’s do the judging over a few days, normally in the month of June. This was chosen, as all greens would be back in play and also a quieter time of the year to walk around the greens and in the sheds.

The greenkeepers aren’t told they have been nominated, we just show up sort of unan-nounced and they find out then. This year the nominees are Wade Turner of Queanbeyan Bowl-ing Club, Adam Troth of Birrong Bowling Club, Andy Rodgers of North Ryde RSL Club, Brent Nor-man of Cabra-Vale Diggers Club, Phil Harfield of Grandviews Bowling Club and Chris Derks of Harrington Bowling Club. If you have had the pleasure of going to any of these clubs you will see why they have been nominated.

The System we use to score the Greenkeepers has six sections; they are as follows:

1. Greens – maintenance prac-tices, surface quality, grass qual-

ity, ditches level and clean with a neat edge, bowls rests in good order.

2. Surrounds – Well maintained and weed free; scoreboards, numbers pegs, bins, seats in good condition and tidy.

3. Machinery – Mowers, rollers, etc. clean and serviced ready for use.

4. Tool Shed – Wheelbarrows, shovels, level lawns, stored and maintained well.

5. Chemicals/Fertilisers – Stored safely and compliantly; Spray equipment stored clean and ready for use; personal protective equip-ment kept clean, and stored in a first class condition; awareness of environmental issues.

6. Diary and Record keeping – Irrigation logs, fertiliser pro-

gram/usage, chemical usage, rainfall chart, machinery repairs and maintenance logs, delivery and budget keeping.

We also have a look at the staff-ing levels at each Club; this is not a point of judgement—just to gauge the assistance the greenkeeper has had throughout the year.

Each point is looked at and given a score; scores are usually relative to the given year. Scoring this year was a bit tougher given the high quality of the nominees. Points are then added up and a score out of 100 is made for each club.

For me it was good to see where I can improve myself, and made me a little envious of the quality of the greens and surrounds out there. It is good to see the stand-ard set by greenkeepers across

the state that all have different methods and use an array of dif-ferent equipment and supplies to eventually come to the same point of high quality surfaces.

So we do have a winner, but unfortunately you will have to wait for the following magazine to come out, as we announce the winner of OUR most prestigious award at the Legends Day up at Davistown Bowling Club, on Monday 28 July.

Don’t forget to contact the Greenkeepers Association if you have any queries about our trade.

Six male and three fe-male bowlers were selected from NSW to play against five States

in this National competition. The representatives were: Geoff Seton (Leichhardt), Mark Whiteman (Mayfield West), James Reyn-olds (Tathra Beach), Eddie Gol-lan (Raymond Terrace), Doug Lambert (Park Beach), James Sigsworth (Sussex Inlet), Caro-lyn Nelson (Engadine), Cheryl Benbow (Raymond Terrace) and Lynn Smith (Roselands Flames).

On two synthetic greens some excellent bowls were played. James, Carolyn and Lynn played 16 games in the 6 days with Caro-lyn winning 3 gold medals, Jamie two gold and 1 bronze and Lynn 1 gold and 2 bronze. The 6 men representatives all won medals and Mark Whiteman in his first Nationals won two bronze. NSW won the overall trophy presented to Allan Starrett, NSW Coach.

Rain flooded the green on the third morning and play was de-layed for an hour while the water subsided and then the volunteers swept the green. The organisa-tion was superb, the volunteers excellent and the camaraderie fantastic.

Captain of NSW, James Reynolds, spoke highly of the friendship, sup-port and the standard of bowls at the completion of the Nationals.

Special congratulations go to Carolyn Nelson who won 3 gold medals in the three competitions entered.

Tim Slater (Vic), Tony Bonnell (Qld) and James Reynolds (NSW) were announced as our repre-sentatives at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

It was a very successful Nation-als held at Fitzroy Bowling Club where the members made us all very welcome.

Congratulations to all the or-ganisers.

2014 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Preparations are well underway for this year’s events at the Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club.

A change has been made to the original pro-gramme for two of the days. On Tuesday 21st October the semi-finals and finals of the State Singles and State Senior Singles will be played at 1.00pm and 5.30pm respectively.

On Thursday 23rd October the same times will apply for the State Fours and State President’s Singles.

2014 Eastern Univer-sity Games (EUG) was hosted by the Univer-sity of Newcastle from

7th – 10th July. Lawn bowls was one of 15 sports being contested, 17 universities were involved in bowls including a very strong 6 person team from the Univer-sity of Newcastle. The competi-tion was held at the Waterboard Bowling Club and was well run by the club’s games secretary/competition manager, Pam Stamford, with assistance each day from a EUG volunteer of-ficial. The format was 2 games of pairs and a game of singles. The level of ability of most of the teams was fairly low, as in-dicated by some of the huge scores, however there were some serious bowlers involved in the event. Upon talking with some of the teams it seems the only preparation for the event was to watch a DVD of Crackerjack.

There was also a fairly relaxed at-titude towards the normal rules of bowls by way of dress regula-tions, no umpires required and very little measuring taking place to determine shots. Teams did have to supply a marker for the singles game thus no club bowlers were required. Another rule that teams had to abide by was no drinking alcohol until af-

ter all games had finished for the day. The team from Newcastle consisted of established bowlers and they breezed through the preliminary pool games without dropping a game, the only team to do this. They played the Uni-versity of NSW in the Gold Medal Final while University Tech-nology Sydney played Charles Sturt University (CSU were the

defending champions) for the Bronze Medal. The games were played in very cold windy condi-tions, which made it tricky even for the experienced bowlers. The Newcastle team pairs combina-tions were Jess Fisher (Maitland City) and Patrick McGaw (Wa-terboad BC), Troy Pond (Mun-morah United BC) and Ashley Fisher (Maitland City). The sin-gles game was played by Adrian Solomons (Raymond Terrace BC) and marked by Denise Fan (Charlestown BC). Adrian never looked in trouble against his op-ponent and cruised to a 21–5 win while the pairs combination of Troy and Ashley also had little trouble winning their game 17–4. The final pairs team of Jess and Patrick had a much harder game and eventually lost 5–12 after 11 ends. The 2 rinks to 1 win were enough to give the University of Newcastle Lawn Bowls Team the Gold Medal.

As many readers would be aware, the innovative Bowlsmate, produced by Coachmans Products, was introduced to the market late in 2011, and has enjoyed good success with bowlers all over

Australia, in New Zealand and the UK. The Bowlsmate con-sists of a bowl and jack lifter and support stick, “all in one”.

The Bowlsmate was designed to assist bowlers to get down low enough to deliver a bowl and get back up. The hinged pickups were designed to assist in protecting the green. The additional support offered by the Bowlsmate has allowed bowlers to get down lower, and not dump their bowls, and has been recommended by some clubs for that purpose. With practice, the Bowlsmate has helped people get back into bowls, with some enjoying renewed success in representing their clubs. Using a Bowlsmate to assist with stability is also beneficial for the greens and saves club re-sources by helping avoid costly repairs due to damage by dumping bowls. The Bowlsmate is considered as a support and therefore, no permit for use is required under the Laws of Bowls. Coachmans Products is really thrilled to have a product on the market that assists both bowlers and clubs at the same time.

Due to feedback from customers, two extra models

have been introduced, the Bowlsmate XL, and the Bowlsmate Custom which are proving pop-

ular with taller bowlers. All models have 7 height adjustments. Bowlsmate Classic ranges from

49 to 64 cms (19 to 25 inches), and the Bowlsmate XL is adjustable from 62 cms to 77 cms

(24 to 30 inches). The Bowlsmate Custom is a full size walking stick with a height range from 79

to 94 cms (31 to 37 inches), priced at $120. The height is easily adjustable to suit each bowler.

There is a demo video of the Bowlsmate in action online at www.bowlsmate.com

Coachmans Products manufactures the Bowlsmate here in Australia, and the company prides

itself on great customer service. The Bowlsmate can be ordered directly from Coachmans
