What are Feeder Services

• According to the TERMINOLOGY ON COMBINED TRANSPORT- a document prepared by the UN/ECE, the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (ECMT) and the European Commission (EC), FEEDER SERVICE means Short sea shipping service which connects at least two ports in order for the freight (generally containers) to be consolidated or redistributed to or from a deep-sea service in one of these ports. By extension, this concept may be used for inland transport services

Why are we need Feeder Services

• From an inland port point of view this is a market niche that could be approached is the requested conditions fullfil. That means a connection with a hub port should exist but as said before dry hub ports are included. Secondly an origin or destination point for freight flows should be located in the area around the port or the feeder port should be located between at least two hub ports

EU Strategy and Policy regarding Feeder Services

• The Communications on a Ports Policy and on the Freight-oriented Rail Network therefore address the availability and the accessibility of transhipment platforms while the Freight Logistics Action Plan focuses on quality and efficiency for the movement of goods, as well as on ensuring that freight-related information travels easily between modes

Feeder Services Clients• Liner Services for Inland Navigation are suitable for clients without critical

delivery times and huge amount of goods for transportation (Bulk Cargo, eg. Agricultural products, feeding stuff, chemicals), as well as High&Heavy transport goods, for which other means of tranport are too expensive or too circumstantial. The same applies to the transportation of vehicles or empty containers, which are transported in huge amounts. Moreover a liner service is also interesting for clients, with the need of regular transportation, if the goods can be transported in “big bags”, pallettized or in containers. However the crucial factor remains the point of origin and the point of destination of the cargo. This should be next to the ports, as much as possible, for reducing the post-carriage as well as to keep the amount of the reloading activities very low.

Requirements of Feeder Services Clients

• Regular departures, to a defined day of the week • Punctuality and Reliability• Further desired services • Sending prosecution via “Tracking & Tracing” systems• Door-to-door logistics• Storage possibilities in the ports • Renting of Container storing position• Market price (competitive in comparison to railway and street)• Solid prices• Special prices for selected category of groups would be appreciated
