Greetings to All! Our 2014 State Convention is now over and from the many comments that have been spoken or written it was a great and successful convention. My hat is off to PDG Judy Tapper and her committee for working so hard and giving us a great weekend in Lisle. There were some

changes to formats this year and they were very well accepted. I want to say a personal THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to attend the convention. We also thank PIP Jimmy and Velda Ross for joining us for the weekend. It is always great to have them visit here in MD 1 and PIP Jimmy has some great words for us to listen to and absorb. I especially want to say THANK YOU to the First Timers who took the time to attend our convention and I look forward to seeing you all at conventions in the future. The 2013-2014 Council of Governors has worked hard this year and are still working to finish out their year knowing that they did the best that they could do in the running of the business affairs of MD 1. They worked hard at running our MD 1 like a business, no matter how much opposition came their way. We challenge the Council for 2014-2015 when they take office on July 8 in Toronto to continue this process and to not regress back into the past. We all must move forward and make the necessary changes that are required to maintain our MD 1 as a leader in Lionism. CHANGE - what a word and what meaning it has for our lives. Change happens to us everyday but it seems that no matter how we say it or what we do to make changes happen - there are always some who oppose the thought of changes happening in MD 1. Our State Magazine changed this year and is still being reworked and changed to help with the distribution of each issue. We thank PDG Austin D’Souza for taking on this task and doing a awesome job. So Cabinet Secretary’s need to change to make sure that all the clubs in their districts receive the magazine. Then Club Secretary’s need to change and be sure that eachclub member with a email address get each issue. I have heard the comment that “not all my members have emails” and my answer to this is to

make a copy and set up a “library type” system so that those who do not have email can check out the issue and read it and return it for another club member to read. There are always ways to make the necessary changes that are happening in Lionism and life. It has been a great honor to serve this 2013-2014 year as the Council Chair for MD 1. I strived each day to represent all the Lions, Lionesses and Leos of this great state to the best of my ability and keep their best interest in mind. Yes, I had some opposition to me in this position, and at times I struggled to understand why there was such strong opposition and I thank those who were willing to let me call and talk things out with them. However, for the most part I had great encouragement from so many others that I knew that I would come out on top. I am so very thankful for the opportunity to FOLLOW MY DREAM and I thank everyone who truly supported and encouraged me during this year. MD 1 must continue to make necessary CHANGES and make a determined effort to increase our membership, to retain our members who are rapidly going out the back door, and to start new clubs. We will be hosting the 2017 International 100 Anniversary Convention and we must show the world why we are MD 1. We must CHANGE and update ourselves into the social media world to get the word out that Lions are here and we are staying here in MD 1. We must CHANGE to attract new and younger members. We must CHANGE and double our efforts to keep our members from leaving our clubs. We must CHANGE and move forward and stop the backwards movement here in MD 1. We must CHANGE and set a example to the world that Lions are the best service organization in the world. We must CHANGE and grow here in MD 1.I want to leave you with a quote from a unknown author “ Today will Never come again. Be a blessing. Be a friend. Encourage someone. Take time to care. Let your words heal and not wound.” Please take these words to heart and may God bless you all.

Thank you for taking the time to Serve.

In Lionism,

CC Lydia Ellis 2013-2014

Editorial:

Are We Doing the Right Thing?

Lions world over held their elections – in their Clubs, Districts, Multiple Districts and will be soon at International level to elect and select leaders to lead their Lionistic geograph-ical areas. How many of us can say boldly that we did the right thing in selecting leaders?

As usual, we had our own agenda in selecting leaders; we had our own selection based on our friendship, based on our own clicks and groups; and based on NOT WHAT THE CANDIDATES KNOW; BUT WHO THEY KNOW!

This is what spoils Lionism in this entire world; at our Club level; District level, Multiple District level and International level. Even though we are a group of Humanitarian Volunteers, we bring some selfish politics in our dealings and make things worse.

I must say that this is one of the reasons we are losing members due to power hungry people. I know it happens everywhere in our daily lives – at work, in our churches, schools, state, local and na-tional government level too.

Hurting someone is very easy with our careless acts of selfishness; however, bringing back that en-thusiasm, energy, power and volunteerism is somewhat very hard to achieve.

Let us do one thing – as we brag our service to humanity, let us maintain our relationship with fel-low members at any level and recognize their tal-ent, knowledge, education, experience and energy while selecting leaders in our Clubs, Districts, Mul-tiple Districts and International level.

If we really need or hungry for power, let us climb the tallest tree in our neighborhood and place a chair on the upmost top branch and let us sit on it forever; nobody will bother us and seek more pow-er than us to go higher.

Once again I remind all lions in this beautiful world of ours – let us read ‘Lions Code of Ethics’ daily until we improve our character, behavior, attitude and friendship toward our fellow lions and give them valid recognition, Amen.

-IPDG Austin D’Souza, Ph.D.

94th Annual Lions of Illinois State

Convention

Our Annual Convention is now history. We had over 395 attendees, including guests, Leos, Lioness and children.

The comments were great, the food was great and the hotel was great!

The hotel staff went out of their way to be sure we had everything we needed, including coffee Satur-day morning in the Silent Auction area and tea and lemonade Friday afternoon, along with cookies.

We want to thank all of you who provided items for the Silent Auction. We made over $1400. We also made over $400 at the live auction Sunday morn-ing, both of which will go to pay for the refresh-ments on Friday and Saturday.

MD1 Leadership Column:

This is the third article in a series based on the writ-ings of John Baldoni. In his handbook 180 Ways to Walk the Leadership Talk,

he identifies six important behav-iors that all leaders do. We have al-ready considered listening and learn-ing from others as well as energizing the organization. This month we will consider Acting for the Benefit of Eve-ryone:

Listen and learn from others

Energize the organization

Act for the benefit of everyone

Develop themselves and others

Empower others to lead

Recognize Achievement

When asked, What is Leadership? Many leaders

respond with one word: ACTION. This ACTION can involve one or more of the following: moving forward, sharing vision, communicating ideas, mak-ing decisions, and celebrating success.

-Communicate your ideas. Others must under-stand your plans and project before they can act. The more they know and understand the better the outcome.

-Just Do It! A leader makes good things happen for others and the organization, doing the best and the right thing for all.

-Set the Example. Get out among your club mem-bers or other clubs in your district. Get to know others. Solve problems with input from others. Walk the talk.

-Manage things. Lead People.

-Make decisions. Be timely. Be thoughtful. Re-member not deciding is to decide.

-Solve problems. Look at all possible outcomes and consider the “what if” of each outcome. Make the best choice.

-Avoid the Blame Game. Look for solutions, not a scapegoat.

-Be a champion for your team. Get them what is needed to do a good job. Address concerns quick-ly.

-Manage crisis. If things are in chaos, take a mi-nute to “cool down”. Assess and make the best possible decision with the information available.

-Earn Loyalty. Treat people the way you want to be treated. Show respect. Share in the jobs no one else wants to do.

-Solve disputes by seeking a win-win situation. Both parties need to leave feeling they have left the discussion with something, no loser.

4

Page 5: State magazine lite june, 2014

Failed!

Failed!

-Be Pro-Active. Look for roadblocks to change and act upon them. Get others’ opinions. Be relevant to your club and community.

-Manage your Time. There are only 24 hours in the day. Use it well.

-Change is constant, except for ideas such as hon-or, truth, integrity, and love, which remain constant.

-Admit your mistakes. No one can be right all of the time. Accept it, apologize sincerely, and learn from it.

-Map your Action Plan.

*Establish the vision, so everyone knows where you want to go.

*Articulate the strategies. Be sure people know how you will get there.

*Identify the benchmarks. Demonstrate how they will know when they are there and cele-brate the accomplishment of getting there.

*Provide a flexible way for continuous feed-back. Get input from others.

-Get Personal. Know your club and community. Reach out.

-Ask questions of yourself as well as others. Show tolerance of others’ points of view. Share ideas.

Measles Initiative Takes on

Another Level

Through our partnership with Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) Alli-ance, Lions have committed to raising US$30 million by our 100th anniversary in 2017 to-wards the fight to eliminate measles. The funds raised by Lions will be matched through the GAVI Matching Fund, which is financially sup-ported by the United Kingdom's Department for In-ternational Development (DFID) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, bringing the total to US$60 million. Through our joint efforts with GAVI and other partners, we will help immunize more than 114 million children and increase access to quality immunization services to benefit children throughout the world.

World Immunization Week was April 23-30, 2014. In celebration of World Immunization Week and the Lions efforts around the world to eliminate measles, all donations made for measles during the month of April were matched dollar for dollar by Lion Aruna Oswal of India, and her family, up to a total gift of

US$500,000. This $500,000 pledge by the Oswal family follows the largest personal donation given to LCIF (also by the Oswal family) of $6 million. Their most recent generous act resulted in the Lions of the world contributing $870,000 in April towards the Measles Initiative, allowing for their pledge of $500,000 to be added, totaling $1.37 million being raised during the month for measles. With the matching gift from the GAVI Alliance, the total money raised during the month of April for measles was $2.74 million! These donations will help save four times the number of children from the poten-tially devastating effects of measles. In addition, donations were eligible for Melvin Jones Fellowship credit.

Please keep the Measles Initiative in mind when making your gift to LCIF. Every dollar received will help protect a child from the devastating effects of measles.

Travels With the ID Bill McKinney

Upon our return home from the International Con-vention in Hamburg, Germany we began to visit various clubs and districts here in MD 1. In August, ID Bill went to Lions International in Oak Brook for a training session of all the newly elected ID’s. Sev-eral of them attended a Lions meeting at the invita-tion of PDG Jim Addington and enjoyed the even-ing. ID Bill traveled from Oak Brook to Rockford to attend a dinner where 1 VP Joe Preston was speaking.

November, 2013 we attended the MD 1 Forum in Normal, Illinois and got to thank many who helped with our campaign and election in Hamburg. In No-vember we also attended the Altamont Lions club meeting and the Governors night in Carmi. We also stayed busy with other events and meetings throughout the State.

December, 2013 we spent the holiday season with family and many friends. We also hosted our annu-al Christmas open house and enjoyed the time of fellowship with the many who attended.

January, 2014 we attended the Altamont Lions Club 75 Anniversary and enjoyed the evening with everyone. We also attended our Lions meetings and the Council of Governors meeting later in the month.

February, 2014 we attended 1-J and 1-G district cabinet meetings and found them to be very inter-

esting and informative. It is always a great experi-ence to hear what the other districts are doing for those that we serve.

In February we also were invited to the District Convention of 26M1 in Missouri and truly enjoyed our time with those hard working Lions.

Then later in the month we headed to San Diego to attend the International Board of Directors meeting. We once again had our hearts touched by the activ-ities that we as spouses and partners attended. Thevision screening event that we went to really showed me what a group of hard working Lions and volunteers can do in a day in dispensing hundreds of pairs of eyeglasses. Those who were being ex-amined were so patient with the wait time.

In March, 2014 we attended District 1-CS district convention and enjoyed seeing our many friends there.

March also found us traveling to District 43Y in Kentucky and what a great time we had with them. ID Bill and I received a very warm welcome and made many new friends. ID Bill and I were both honored by being named Kentucky Colonels in recognition of our service to Lions. We were also named honorary citizens of Hazard, Kentucky and were made a Duke and Duchess of the city of Haz-ard. We were touched by these great honors.

March also found us traveling to 14 U in Pennsyl-vania for their district convention and again we made many new friends in Lions. We also go to meet some of the other District Governors who at-tended the convention. We enjoyed our time with these dedicated Lions and had a great trip - we even had to have the plane deiced before we could fly home.

It is a great honor to be representing the Lions, Li-oness and Leos of the world as a part of the Inter-national Board of Directors. Thank you all once again for choosing us to serve.

To be continued.....

The Lions of the World will be descending on the

City of Chicago to celebrate their 100th Anniversary

in 2017. The Lions of Illinois, Multiple District 1

will serve as the Host Committee for the Centennial

Convention. It may sound like it is still far away,

but there is a lot to prepare for in the years leading

up to the convention.

The Centennial Convention will be June 30 - July

4, 2017. The main venue will be McCormick Place

and about 8 to 12 hotels will be used to house the

more than 25,000 attendees that are being antici-

pated to attend this milestone in our

Association’s history. The International Parade is

scheduled for Saturday, July 1 and will march down

either Clark or State Street.

The Host Committee is still in need of LIONS who

are willing to be an active leader. The Host Com-

mittee is responsible to promote the committee ac-

tivities and the convention at various functions

throughout the coming years; hosting of the visitors

during their stay in Chicago; the marshalling of the

parade and various sessions that will take place dur-

ing the convention and the fund raising to allow for

the committee to carry-out the committee responsi-

bilities. There are various areas that LION Leaders

are still needed to assist and be an active member in

the planning of the committee’s activities.

Right now, we have two projects that will step off

our fund raising efforts this Spring. This Commem-

orative Pin will be available to all Lions for a $5.00

donation to the committee. Pins will be available in

later February and at all District Conventions. The

other is a banner patch that will be given to the club

that makes a direct donation to the committee.

There are three levels of donations - $100.00,

$250.00 or $500.00. Each level of donation will

have its own distinct patch.

Over the next couple of years, the Host Committee

will be presenting programs that will inform the

LIONS of ILLINOIS about the duties and responsi-

bilities that are needed to coordinate the Hosting of

the Centennial Convention. LION Volunteers will

be a big part of this committee with a lot more in-

formation coming as we get closer to the conven-

tion. If you are interested in being an active leader

on the Host Committee, you can reach Lion Bob

Block, PDG at [email protected] or by phone

(219) 671-0287 for additional information.

Remember that there is always a place for

YOU to volunteer. We’re excited to finally announce the winners for Lions Clubs International’s first ever social media photo contest held in honor of #MatteosDream. In December, we asked Lions to share photos on Facebook and Instagram that show how your club makes dreams come true. The responses were great, and choosing a winner was no easy task! - See more at: http://lionsclubs.org/blog/2014/01/27/matteosdream-photo-contest-winners/#sthash.WWFjU2ZS.dpuf
