All the men of the College and tbei faculty are invited to attend, ac- cording to Cochrane. The deci sions of tile meeting, il they recoui men! changes, will be presented te student assemble. uring the scholastic war or- following motion at the assembly Friday; "Resolved, that the student association, through the president and at her discretion, appoint a committee to write a petition to the legislature from the student association rcipicst- ing passage of a bill appropriating sufficient money to construct a fence around State college, and that this committee present tile petition o the legislature at its discretion." A third motion was presented re- garding the appropriation of >Vi5 to send delegates to the model league of nations college conference at l.afa cur red last Sunday night ,it / :15 o'clock whin Anna Powell, '32, was killed by an automobile on Madison avenue and Quail street. She- died at the Albany Hospital about a half hour after she was brought there by Henry M. Delacour, driver of the automobile which struck her. Gertrude Beaters, a freshman, was killed November •) by a hit and run driver as she was alighting from a bus in front of her home in Schodack (.'enter. Miss Powell was accompanied by Katherine C. TO GIVE SERIES OF TALKS ON MARRIED LIFE I he student Young Men's Chris- tian association will institute a series of lectures on Marriage Re- lationships for the men of the Col lege starting nest week either in the- Lounge or the College bouse, according to Warren R. Cochrane, '3(1, president. The lectures will be conducted in conjunction with a similar course being given at the Central Y. M. C. A. to young men of the city. "The object of the lectures ;. to give m e n the- proper perspective on the subject of marriage, its obliga lions and responsibilities." ( och Teachers'CollegeShouldTrain Coaches, Not Athletes, Declares Baker News Will Seek Reasons For Student Absence From Ball Games "Varsity baseball should he elimi- nated from the State college pro- gram," Coach Rutherford Baker de- clared yesterday in an exclusive inter- view by the Nt.ws. "I heartily agree with the sentiments in the letter War- ren Cochrane wrote to the News last week, for all the reasons he men- tioned and for several others be- sides." "The state pays me, in theory, to keep the men of State college in good physical condition. However, actu- ally I am being paid to devote almost all my time to a small group of al- ready physically able men while the large majority of the men must do a- best they can. With two varsity teams to coach. I could hardly super- vise projects which include all the men of the- College." "As I understand it. this is a Col- lege which will develop teachers. There is hardly a young man teacher who at some time or other is not called upon to coach some athletic team, and certainly a man who has never played basketball can't coach i;, and even more so for baseball. "The men's teaching jobs each year go first to the men who can coach besides taking care of their classes. Time after time honor students take second choice in jobs, giving first choice to the varsity athlete who knows his subject and can direct athletic teams besides. As far as I'm concerned, I'd rather see every man in college get an even chance at the good jobs instead of the few who are naturally gifted athletically, walking away with everything." Substitute Coaching Classes "For that reason I would recom- mend abolition of varsity baseball ami substitution eif coaching classes taught by me with no college credit, and open to every man in the college. I These would give the men the oppor- kes .in educated Mi.m to be leader," said William II. " A s I understand i t . this is a Co l lege wh ich w i l l develop teachers. There is hard ly a young man teacher who at some t ime or other is not called upon to coach some athlet ic team, and cer ta in ly a man who has never played basketball can't coach i;, and even more so for baseball.

" T h e men's teaching jobs each year go first to the men who can coach besides tak ing care o f the i r classes. T ime a f te r t ime honor students take second choice in jobs, g i v i n g f irst choice to the vars i ty athlete who knows his subject and can direct athletic teams besides. As fa r as I 'm concerned, I'd rather see every man in college get an even chance at the good jobs instead o f the few who are na tura l l y g i f t e d ath le t ica l ly , wa lk ing away w i t h eve r y t h i ng . "

Substitute Coach ing Classes " F o r that reason I would recom

mend abol i t ion o f vars i ty baseball ami subst i tut ion eif coaching classes taught by me w i th no college credit, and open to every man in the college.

In the second half, State again started off in whirlwind fashion, but later on showed sloppy playing, and both defense and offense cracked. The X'ew Jersey-ites were allowed to obtain a good lead before our team finally started to play decent ball and overhaul their opponents. Their rally was too late and was cut short by the final whistle.

The Pratt Institute game was played the following night in Brooklyn, against a veteran five. The Institute had a very strong basketball squad. They used a second team for the first half and succeeded in running up 20 points to the 9 scored by State. The first team was sent into action in the third quarter against our boys, who began to play real ball, ill fact allowing the first string men to ring up only K points. Our boys were hampered greatly in their scoring attempts by glass backboards, not being able to judge their -hots accurately.
