welcome to our Aprll / May 2019 edition of Knlght Llfe. State Council commencedthe new year with a short State Council Meeting on January 19, before holdinga planning Meeting that same day. The Plannlng meetlng set out our goals forthe yearl and each state councillorls responsibilities regarding their portfolioslsub-committeesl and Branch representation, lt also revlewed Our Action Plantour Membership, as well as other initiatives tO help uS With Our management OfBusiness and Policy' and to look for improvement in all that We dO.
To touch on the Executive responsibilities, Hwpp4fZ leads a team Of5. This isBro Andy Tamassy is now the new DeputyState Chairman, Bro Phil Bums has againtaken on the task of State Secretary, andDino Persico is once again our Treasurer.
we welcome State Councillor, Bro TonySexton to the fold. Tony backs up both theSecretary and the Treasurer if required, but he is also our new Knight Life editor.'We have several sub-committees to
support our projects. Thcsc ¢rc/a,..
o IIistory - Bra 4"dy Tam¢ssy heads agroup of5, including past Chairman,Bro lan Fleetwood. The sub-committee continues to research anddocument our history and InterviewMembers.

o Youth matters - Bra Pcfe, Kciyheads a committee of3. There isfurther reference to Youth below.
a Mel.hoetship - Bra Michael Boyleheads a committee of5. One ofthe most difficult tasks, but thesub-committee is workmg hard toprogress thlS.
o Centenary preparation - Headedby Bra Toroy Sexroro with a groupof5. We need to be on top of thisnow to ensure we can have Nationalrepresentation present at ourcelebrations in 2022.
o Plenary Council - Bra Dc""'d
explained later in this report.
For my part, I consider it necessary thatI be familiar with each portfolio, and toendeavour to keep you informed aboutthe actions taken by the sub-committees. Iwill also endeavour to attend at least one ofyour Branch meetings throughout the year, subject to time being available, aS I wouldlike to meet all SA Members, and makemyself available to listen to Branch andMember suggestions.
So, I can say that I a-m very graceful to a greatteam ofExecutive and State Councillors, whohave stepped up to take on the responsibilitieswhich I have asked of them, and in doing so,look after the order's affairs on behalf of allKSC Members in South Australia.
Australia Day Massrm pleased to report that this was wellattended by the Supreme Knight, Bro BrianCooper, State Councillors, and 2 Branchrepresentatives. Wives also attended. Thereis further reference to this Mass and the
John Brewer Memorial Scholarship dsowhere inKnight Life.
YouthYou may wonder why we are becominginvolved, be it in a small way, with youthmatters. There are several reasons for this, but the most important that all Knights needto know, are that in the past we have beenseen as the Bishop's men, and therefore,we still need to assist our clergy whereverpossible, including in helping to keep ouryoung adults ln the Church.

By tapping into our youth, we can learn toappreciate the way they think and work in thismodern, highly technical world, which we live intoday. And so too, we also need younger people toconsiderjoining our membership, and we need tounderstand why it is difflcult to encourage youngparishioners to accept ministries or join Orderssuch as our own.Accordingly, I have attended one of the youthPwd Theology, nights, along with my wife, to
gain an appreciation of their concerns, and BroPeter Kay and I were KSC volunteers who assistedat the World Youth Day at Sacred Heart Collegeon 27 January. Peter has a separate article aboutthis on the back page of Knight Life.
PIenary CouncilState Council has also been actively involved withparticlPating in, and in some Cases, facilitatinggroup discussions relating to submissions for thePJcroany Cottrocil. Whilst, in the latter part of2018, we may not have been fully c!w/ci!'f withhow to approach this request to make submissionsto the Plenary Council organisers, most of usbecame aware of the need to participate by early2019. State Council has a sub-committee whichwill keep abreast of changes or notifications, andwhere we can help when the Bishops travel toAdelaide in 2020 as the flrst part of consideringsubmissions. Meanwhile, as submissions for SouthAustralia closed on Ash Wednesday (6 March),I trust all Knights in SA were able to provide avoice where they thought change or ocherwise isnecessary within the Catholic Church, whetherit be through our Branches, or through othergroups, such as your Parish groups. Further, I askyou not to forget this topic and that you remaininformed and act to participate in any furtherdiscussions.
Finally, as we are now in the Lencen season andapproaching the commemoration of the death ofOur Lord and hls subsequent resurrection, I askthat you give the season much thought, and thatyou also think about our own deceased and sickMembers and offer your prayers for these.
Have a happy and Holy Easter, and if you, retravelling, please keep it safe on the roads.

A FIight of Fancy
will Pope Francis have the opportunity of viewing thecurrent Australian movie Storm Boy? I foape so.
I imagine that a Pope whois saturated in the spirit ofStFrancis and who can write hisencyclical Laudato Si', Throughthe greatness and beauty

In the Christian era we fmd that StThomas Aquinas is more positive. In hishymn in honour of the Blessed Sacrament4c!oro 7lc, he invites us to praise thevirtuous pelican. thha ®w. ifeFormatioTheme: The Holy Spirit Encourages ExpressionSpiritual gifts are not innate) natural talents) llke an ear for music or the ability to drawl
but rather they are empowerments that the Holy Spirlt glves to do thlngs that were not
posslble by mere natural effort apart from the Holy Spirlt.ln the Acts of the Apostles we clearly see one of the changes of Pentecost broughtabout ln them was that they performed miracles, healed people, preached, and spokein tongues, which previously they had not been able to do apart from Christ
Step 1: Opening prayer - From the Order's Prayers
Step 2: Readings on theThemeThe fact is that, from the moment ofPentecost, we disciples ofJesus have
always lived with a mlSSiOn tO makeJesusknown and loved each in his/her owntime.
Thls can be very difflcult for a numberof reasons and, not least of them, is thatwe can become so distracted by thosematters which occupy most of'our timeand concerns. The challenges facing theApostles at the time ofJesus` crucifixion
were different from our own time inmany ways. But very basically if mostof our limited time, thoughts, energiesand worries are focussed on {makingends meet', on being assured offood andshelter, on providing for the basics oflife for ourselves and those who dependupon us) on responding to the need toensure We Can
pay our bills, of'responding to theneeds of others inour coml-nicyas they face their
challenges, etc,
there can belittle time left forfocussing on ourrelationship withGod and that can
lead to a certain sense ofa superflclal
(almost merely academic) connection withthe LordJesus and his other disclples.
Yet in that context history demonstratesan abiding desire that keeps on emergingand that is to carry out the mlssionentrusted to us.
In his recent best-selling book God!'s Gooci/or Yrow, author, journalist and
political commentator Greg S/7C"'daro Putsit in these words:
Here is yet another ragged paradox
for Christians to grab hold of
Jesus taught clear truths of asupernatural kind.
And through both hls own example andhis teachlngs - such as the goldenrule.. loo unto others as you wouldhave them do to you`
April / May 2019- 6
(Matthew 7: 12) - he WOuld seemto make an institutlon like slavery
completely unacceptable.
But while Jesus was clear about the
principles, he seems to have left itup to hls dlsciples to work out howto
apply those prlnclples in real historlcal
circumstances.
The morallty is fixed; people's efforts
to apply the morality to dlverse and
unfolding hlstorlcal situations have
always been pretty Imperfect. But over tlme the moral teachings
did influence, even shape, not only
individual behaviour, but civic culture
as well.
God /.s Good for You; Greg SheridanlAllen & Unwin, Sydney 2018 page 99
History also demonstrates that whenthe Christian Community - whetherits church or civic leaders - embraceshuman power as a means of'flurtherlngthe mlssion it fails dismally. The focusfor any authority or foundatlon for ourmission and purpose for being mustalways rest squarely on the promptings of'the Holy Spirit. Our interface with theworld as disciples ofJesus depends uponour personal intimate relationship with
Jesus and that is the free gift of the HolySpirit.
Step 3:Allow a few moments reflective silence.
Step 4: Scripture ReadingThose who are living by their
natural inclinations have their minds
on the things human nature desires;
those u)ho live in the spirit have their minds
on spiritual things.
And human nature has nothing
to loolejorward to but death)
white the spirit looksforu, ard to life
and peace, because the outlook of disordered
human nature is opposed to God)
since it does not submit to God's Law,
and indeed it cannot,
and those who live by
their natural inclinations
can never be pleasing to God.
You, however, liue not by your human
inclinations) bllt by the spirit,
since the Spirit of God has made
a home in you:' (p-a-ns8. a-9)
On the other hand
the fruit of the Spirit is love,
joy, peace, patience, leindness, goodness)trustfulness , gentleness and seifcontrol ;
no law can touch such things as these.
•.. Since ule are living by the Spirit,
let our behaviour be guided by the Spirit
and let us not be conceited or provocative
and eywious of one another.
(GahtlanS 5: 22, 23 25, 26)
Steps: Reflection /JM!'"s/
Step 6: Sharing /1OJW1'flS/Clearly as Knights we have seen manyexamples of both particularly in the day today works of the Order over time.
. From experience, list those times in
your own life or ln the lives of otherswhen you have f(elt that it has not beenclear that the Holy Spirit was at work.
. Then identify times when it is clear that
the Holy Spirit has been at work.
. Comparing those times, are you able
to identify your reaction and why youreacted that way?

Step 7: Conclusion
We pray together..God grant me:
The Spirit of Wisdomthat I may desplse the
perishable things of this worldand aspire only after the thingsthat are eternal.
The Spirit of Understanding toenlighten my mind withthe light of Your divine truth.
The Spirit of Counselthat I may ever choosethe surest way of pleasing Godand gaining heaven
The Spirit ofFortitudethat I may bear my crosswith You and thatI may overcome with courageall the obstacles that opposemy salvation.
The Spirit of Knowledgethat I may know Godand know myself'.
The Spirit ofPiecythat I may findthe service of Godsweet and amiable.
The Spirit of Fearthat I may be filledwith a loving reverencetowards God and may drc.ad inany way to displease Hlm.

Theme: The Holy Spirit Transmits Holiness
When one enters St Peters Basilica in the Vaticanthe feature that draws our attentlon is the HighAltar built over the Tomb of St Peter.
This Altar and its surrounds and Canopy weredeslgned and built by Bernini in about 1660AD.
Looking beyond the Altar we are drawn to thestunning alabaster window that sheds beautifulllght into the church. This window (also designedby Bernini) depicts the Holy Spirlt The sunls raysare magnlfied by this window and pierce the wholearea with a warm and peaceful glow
Step 1: Opening prayerFrom the Order's Prayers
Step2: Fleadings ontheThemeYou knoul that the Holy Spirit constitutes the soul)
the life blood of the Church
and of euery individual Christian:
He is the Love of God
ulhO -Res of Our hearts his dwelling Place
and enters into communion with us.
The Holy Spirit abides with us alulays)
he is alu)ays ulithin us) in our hearts.
The Spirit himseifis 'the gift of God' par excellence
(of.]n 4..lO), he is agift of God)
and he in turn communicates various spiritual gifts
to those ulho receive him.
(Pope Francis, General Audience, April 2014)
In addressing the faithful on the Gift of Piety in
June 2014, Pope Francis had this to say:
This relationship with the Lord
is not intended as a duty or an imposition.
It is a bond that comesfiom within.
It is a relationship lived u)ith the heart:
it is ourfriendshiI) u)ith God)
granted to us byJesus,a friendshiI) that changes Our life
and fills us ulith passion, ulithjoy.
Aprll / May 2019- 8
Thus) the gift of piety stirs in us
aboue all gratitude and praise.
This is, infect, the reason llnd the most
authentic meaning of our u)orship
and our adoration.
When the Holy Spirit allows us
to perceive the presence of the Lord
and all his louefor us,
it warms the heart and mo1)eS uS
quite naturally to prayer and celebration.
Piety, therrfere, is synonymo"s with
the genuine religious spirit)
u)ithfilial trust in God)
unth that capacity to pray to him
u/ith the love and simplicity that belongs
to those u,ho are humble of heart.
If the gift of piety makes us grou)in relation to and in communion with God
and leads us to live as his children,
at the same time, it helps us to pass
this love on to others as well and
to recogmse them as our brothers and s¢sters.
And then, yes, u)e u/ill be moved
byjeelings of piety - not pietism! -in relation to those around us and to those
u/ham we encounter every day.
Why do I slay 'nOt PietiSm'?
Because some think that to be pious
ts to close onels eyes,
to I)OSe like a Picture
and pretend to be a saint.
In Piedmon[ we say:
to play the €mugna quacia
[literally: the pious or serene nun].
This ts not the gife of piety.
The gift of piety means to be truly capable of
rejoicing with those u)ho rejoice)
of uleeping u)ith those who weeI))
of being close to those u)ho are lonelyor in anguish) ofcorrectmg those in error)
of consoling the afflicted, of urelcoming andhelping those in need.
The gift of piety is closely tied to gentleness.
The gife of piety ulhich the Holy Spirit gives us
makes us gentle, makes us calm)
patient) at peace u)ith God)at the service of others u)ith gentleness.
Dear friends, in the Letter to the Romans the
Apostle Paul states :"For llll u)hO are led
by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
For you did not recewe the spirit of slavery
to fall back mtofear, but you haue received
the spirit of sonship") from ulhich,"u)e cry, 'Abba! Father!"I (ELm 8 14-1S)
Let us ask the Lord for the gift of his Sp£rit
to conquer our fear, our uncertainty,
and our restless, impatient s1)irit,
and to malee of us joyful ulitnesses of God
and of his love, by u)orshipping the Lord
in truth and in service to our neighbour
with gentleness and ulith a smile)
u,hick the Holy Sptrit always gives us injoy.
May the Holy Spirit grant to all of us
this gift of piety.
(Pope Francls, General AudienceJun 4, 2014)
WhenJesus appeared to the disciples afterHis Resurrection - the flrst ScriptureReading fromJohn's Gospel today -He says twice 'Peace be u)ith you,.
He said it to them many times previously- it was (is) His personal greeting that
helped them to recognise Him.
The previous verse (verse 19) tells us that
He fiound the disciples all gatherc.d in fearbehind closed doors!
This was not going to do much forachieving the mission!
That changed tojoy when theyrecognisedJesus and recelved the HolySpirit from Him. This was beforePentecost but it set them up for it.

Step 4: Scripture FleadingJesus said to theml

he shou)ed them his hands and his side.
The distil)leS u)ere filled u)ith joy
at seeing the Lord,
and he said to them again)
Peace be ulith you.
As tI.e Father sent me>so I am sending you.
Aifter saying this he breathed on them and said.
Receive the Holy Spirit. uchn 20.. 20-22)
There are many diffrerent gifts)
but it is aha)ays the same Spirit;
there are many different u,ays of seruing,
but lt ts alu)ays the same Lord.
There are many different forms of activity,
but in everybody it is the same God
u)ho is at ulork in them all.
The particulay manifestation of the Spirit

Step 5: Reflection /5A4ms/
Step 6: Sharing /7OA4l'«s/
The Oxford deflnition offoo/!'ceess is
the state of being holy. And holy is de£lned as
a state of dedication or consecration to God.
Pope Francls uses many examples that
polnc to the of the working of the HolySpirit ln Our llfe.
I Can you identify examples of everyday
life which would merit the term /?a/y?
I What about them makes them fro/y?
Step 7: ConclusionWe pray together:
O God,Who enlightens the mindsand inflames the hearts of the faithfulby the Holy Spirit,
grant that through the same SpiritI may know my true vocation in life, and may have the graceto follow if faithfully.
I ask this throughJesus Christ, our Lord, who I am privilegedto receive into my heart and soulin Holy Communion. Amen

MT BARKER / STRATHALBYNIt is always a special time in the Adelaide
Hills come Autumn season... and somehowthe beauty of nature as the trees begin theirannual transition in colours helps to bringtranquillity and some peace to the chaos of'the world. It has been a somewhat awkwardtime for Catholics over the past few monthsbut now is a very good time as we movethrough Lent and prepare for the inspiringrecognition of Easter in our Christian Faithto take some time to renew ourselves andto engage positively in our beliefs with thegeneral community.
We Knights have a small advantage inchis aLSPeCt a\S We have The Guiding Principlesand subsequent Ethos of our group hangingon the Church foyer wall... we have thechallenge to live with those guidelines andpresent ourselves to the community and tosee beyond the mistakes and errors of someof the human representatives and search forthe Spiritual Truth and see the good thatcan come from our beliefs.
Chairman Bro Andrew has lead theway in practical terms over the past fewmonths as we have taken up the challengeto be visible and valued amongst ourcommunity. Here is a short list of thoseactions and achievements -1 The induction of new Bra Stew/arc
Cfo!'/toff (we believe he is the youngestKSC member in SA) and the welcomingof'potential Brother Brian Fiord toour recent meetimgs. There are severalothers who have shown positive interestand this reflects our desire to grow inour c.ommunity.
2 Bro Andrew public presentations to SfFrancis de Sales College students at majorCollege functions and taking time togive an explanation to many students, parents and staffofthe college. It is a little surprising to us how littleis fenou)n about KSC in the CatholicCommunities.

MURFIAY MALLEEHello everyone, hopefully we all
survived the heat wave and now lookforward to some nice autumn weather, although the forecast at the moment sayswe are not over itjust yet.
All is going well with Our Branch;our meetings are regular and wellattended with assistance from some ofour Murray Bridge Brothers. We doreturn the favour at their meetings.
We are persisting with our bingosales at Murray Bridge. Sales are slowbecause of the massive renovations to theold Woollies Complex, we are exceptinglt to be completed by early April. Whathappens then? We will have to wait andSee.
Good discussion around theformation continues. It is an interestingtopic and well addressed with solidinput from those in attendance. With anageing church like ours there are alwaysprojects that we can help with, especiallyaround the grounds that always needmaintaining. Bro Peter Nearmy lS a keenworker in that area.
One interesting project we becameinvolved with was the removal ofa verybig palm tree, it was at the back of thechurch and too near the septic tank forcomfort. We were lucky enough tohave a contractor who agreed to removeit for no charge to us if he could take itand replant it on his property. Beingabout 6 metres high it was a done dealvery quickly all we had to do was takedown a section offence.
The transfer of Murray BridgeMember BroJoforo ^rec]g/a is a loss to thatBranch and also to ours as he alwaysattended our meetings with muchappreciated input, he was also a willingdriver when it came to travel. Ourprayers are with him and wife Pam, whowan"o be nearer to their family.
Best wishes to all,Peter Connolly

SOUTHERN FLEURIEUAs I begin this report, we have hadjust
a small shower of rain which is something,I guess, but our prayers are certainly for awhole lot more. Like the rest of the statewe have had lots of hot weather down hereon the south coast, and the older you getthe harder it is to handle. And they say thesummers are just going to get warmer andwarmer! Our Branch Council was installedat Victor Harbor onJan 20, and as usual FrVinh said some nice words about our Orderand the works we do in the parish.
Speaking ofFr Vinh, as a member of theparish PPC, we were all Invited to the parishhouse for a BBQ tea on a lovely summernight in January. Bros Phil Burns and BillLongworth are also on the council andwith our wives we enjoyed a lovely meal.Fr Vlnh is a great cook, and with the ladiesdoing salad and sweets, and all pitching into do the dish washing' the night ran verysmoothly. Fr Vinh often invites parishioners(usually in groups of' five) over for a similarevening. It helps a lot towards people really
getting to know each other and builds greatharmo ny.
We recently held our 45 club BBQ atGoolwa, and about 30 people attended.I could not help but think that maybe asa parish we could have similar events. Noraffles, nor anything else but just peopleenjoying each other's company, and thereforeagain building up parish harmony: just whatFr Vinh is doing with meals at his home.
Bro Phil Burns played his part in allthis by organizing a trip f(or parishionersto Kangaroo Island on March 3. Twenty-three parishioners made the trip at 10 inthe morning arriving at Penneshaw. Theychecked out the local markets, had lunch, and went to the 2 pm Mass before headingback on the hlgh seas. I would love to have
gome but we were booked for the weekendpuppy sitting!
Our St Pat,s Night has over 70 bookingsas I give this report which is pleasing) and onSat, March 9, we did the BBQ at Bunnings,a good fundraiser. More about these eventsin the next report.
|X/e have a number of ^4embersexperiencing health problems at themoment, and we keep them very muchin our prayers. At our March meeting weexamined different ways to reach out andhelp different people in our community. This is a result ofa very good point madeby one of our Members that in KnightLife we read about a lot of meetings andfundraising, but perhaps we need to hearmore of people we assist on a regular basis, such as the lonely) aged, and frail. Moreon this subject also in the next report.
Finally, a few laughs -From the kitchen: (wife) IVott/
my love u)hat ulould you lileefor tea, chicken, beef, or lamb?
From the lounge: (husband)Thank you dear,I thinle Ifancy chicken fonighf.
Back to the kitchen: (wife)I ulas not talleing to you. You)re getting soup and bread)

PORT PIFllE/CRYSTAL BROOKWe have an annual raffle as part of our
major fund raising. It has been going fora few years now. One of' the Brothers isparticularly good at having prizes donated.Another Brother is good at distributingbooklets and making sure that we accountfor them. The rest of us laugh a little andgroan as we accept our share. This yearhowever, there seemed to be a difference.A list of previous donations accompaniedour tickets. This is ulhere the money is going.said Brother Administrator. Tfo/s I,s ffocd#creroce f/74f yO# l74c!fee. I looked at a list thatincluded hospital donations, world youthDay support, Diocesall Youth Ministry,Port Augusta Jail exiling prisoners, theTownsville Floods, Bangalore flres and thelist continued. I humbly stopped groaningand realised that a simple raffle ticket canmake a small difference.
We seemed to enjoy the theme of ourmonthly discussion and the reflectionaround the Holy Spirit drawing us towardswisdom. The questions in Knight Lifeseemed to connect with us. They seemedto invite response. A series of anecdotesbegan when blokes had sense of Spirit,or transcendence. It was a conversation
punctuated by a bit of laughter but alsoan amazement that the Spirit can touchhearts; that the Spirlt lives in hearts. It wasalso a time for me to recognlse the deepspirituality within the Brothers. I mustnever underestimate them.
We had two new Members. BrotherKevin Rucioch from way down southand Brother Michael Preece from YorkPeninsula and returnlng tO Pirie. It was
great to welcome them to the table. Imarvelled at what a difference a new voiceand a new perspective makes, and we hadtwo of them. V/e are a bit richer withnew membership. The two Brothers havestories and a genuine inclination to searchand understand. In addition, it turnedour thoughts to recruitment. A few ideasemerged. We must try.
One of our most important ministries
is to the elderly men at two Nursing andResidential Care Homes. The weeklyvisiting roster was talked about andanecdotes about the men had us chatting. Itseems to us vitally important for aged mento have men,s company. They need timealone as blokes. They need a light beer, achance to repeat stories, a pride to sit withone another despite nature's cruel theft oftheir power. They need a sense of malenessand community. The effort to get there issometimes a discipline but after our talk,I made a greater commitment. This seemsimportant.

WOODVILLE / WEST TORRENSThe Branch is achieving Its donation
targets on a regular basis even though ourincome streams are not as buoyant as theyonce were. The 45 Club generates reliableand consistent funds to allow us to supportour charities of choice.
We recently sponsored the Hutt Street4nge/J:or a Day program and our appointedday ended up beingthe hottest everAdelaideday. We worked in front of televisioncamera men and many politicians. Thiswas quite an experience for Brothels FrankCousins, Leo Cousins and Brian Cooper.
At our first meeting for the year wedetermined that we would again hold ourtwo Sw#dc!y Lwrocheo#s as we have beendoing for many years now.
Again, this year we will pay the orderSwsfal're¢b!'/!'fy Fwrod supporting the Knight,sOffice in its efficient functioning.
We have many frail and aging Brotherson our membership role, please rememberto include them in your prayers.

DEF]NANCOU FITSlim pickings as far as substance
goes in this bi-monthly report as theonly tangible action at DernancourtBranch since New Year has been theweekly netball BBQs at Lothlan Ave,|Vindsor Gardens. However, this isno small endeavour! This summerwe have raised approx. $3,000 withone week to go. Hot weather causedthe cancellatiom of a couple of weeksas well, meaning the total couldlvebeen higher. In truth the cancellationsprobably came at the right time as thisis a major undertaking? quite laboriouswork and 4 to 5 hours on thejob, sothe odd week off does no harm at allto the volunteers. Suffice to say theVinnies, the greatest recipients of thefruits, should be quite grateful andpleased with our efforts. We hope.Let alone the recipients of the Vinnieslwork who perhaps have taken it a bitfor era.n¢ed. Well done good and faitlrfulseyuants.
The Dark Knights nlght owls, team have just completed their mostsuccessful bowling season ever, winning 50% of their matches. This, ifyou have been listening over the years,is unheard ofl! Brothers Hern, Nassigand Gill plus associates Hawkins andButton have re-written the recordbooks (well our own at least) and werequite competitive this season much tothe shock, and in some cases dismay,of regulars at the Modbury bowlingclub. Financially we did ok too inpicking up a few random cash drawswhich will buy a couple of rounds atthe annual Presentation Dinner.
Like I said, a slow news 2 monthsand this is a bit same old, same old. Wemay have to include a few 'where arethey nows?, or (personality proflles' infuture to add some spark.

MUFIFIAY BF]IDGEMurray Bridge Branch held their first
meeting for 2019 on Sun, 16th Feb in theChurch Hall, commencing at 4.00pm, oursummertime scalrting limc.
We revert co 2.00pm starts forour coldermonths, commencing with our meeting onApril 23, the third Sunday of month, whichnever varies during the cooler months.
Our Branch finds this arrangementworks well for both our Members and ourBrothers from Murray Mallee (TailemBend). We can all travel and be homebefore dark with this arrangement.
All our Members had an enjoyableChristmas and it was pleasing to see a goodattendance. Our esteemed State Councilmember, Bill, was an apology due to a flattyre. Luckily it went flat in the garage, noton route to us, so I graciously accepted hisap ology.
The Knights provided a BBQ for anAntioch Group from BrlghtOn Parish Whocame to Murray Bridge on the weekendofFeb 23: a delightful group - about 24young people - who stayed overnight inthe School Hall. They sang at both Massesin Murray Bridge and we supplied dinnerfor them, which they greatly appreciated.
Our 45 Club as mentioned in lastKnlght Llfe is underway. The first draw hasbeen run and won by our own Bra TerryJenner. Well done Terry.
with the help of our Treasurer, BroTerry Critchley7 We Were able tO remitmoney to the Knights Flood Appeal inQueensland. Bro Terry was ln COntaCt Withthe Queensland Chairman and lt turnedout he lS a CPA like Bro Terry and knewBro Brian Cooper... Small world.
Our Sustainability fee has beenforwarded, so at this Stage We are Still abovewater.
My wife and I are moving back toKatherine, NT. in mid-March, so this willbe my last Report for the Knights.
We sold our Murray Bridge home 12months ago and have rented here for thelast 12 months.
|We have a house in Katherine whichwe have leased, but with our eldestdaughter and husband and 3 grandchildrenenvisaging moving from the Kimberley,s tonear Katherine in the near future, Pam andI believe now is a good time to go backup North. We lived there previously for 9years after a year in Darwin, so we knowthe Top End reasonably well and will be SOmuch closer to the grand-children and Saland Mick.
Sad to see our numbers diminishing,Blake has gone to Melboume to study fora Parish Priest role, Michael Schellen isconflned to aged care in Mannum and RosThomas is not enjoying good health.
Neville Connell is returning fromPerth, so maybe he may re-join. l4/c fropc so.
All the best to all Knights, Keep upthe prayers and good work done by TheKnights.

EDWAF]DSTOWN/PLYMPTONIX7e,re well into 2019 and so - far we,re
all in one lot of pieces and still upright formost o| the lime - "How) much longer?"You may well ask but the Almighty is notletting on.
I thought I,d give a run-down On Our{oldies :
1 There's Bro Gerald Fitzpatrick whoisjigging around these days with anew hip and sounds good as well; he ishoping to return to our meetings, butit depends a little on transport.
2 I spoke to Elizabeth and she toldme that Bro h4athew was OK andpassed me to him; my 'phone mayhave played up but then it couldhave been Mike's hearing- still, Igot the message. He wanted to beremembered to his friends and wishedus all the very best.
3 Our man with the funny hats (BroJohn Morti-er) is recuperating aftereye repairs and I reckon he,s still afterme for something. I had coffee withBroJohn on his last round of paperpick-ups and, like many of us, he,sexperiencing a variety of aches.
4 And then there is Bro ArthurBeckman. He's difficult to catchwith the (phone but I presume BroArthur is still in one piece, is upright, still playing Bowls and is in reasonablehealth.
5 Bro Pat Victory returned home somelime ago.. and I'm still vertical.
Bro Darryl piloted us through theFormation segment. We had a ttof- so-#1!'#Or difrlCulty With Step 6 - Sharing- Confirmation and its seven Gifts. However, we got there in the end withWisdom, Understanding, Knowledge,Counsel, Fortitude, Piety and Fearof the Lord. The Fruits as listed in theScriptures had us baffled and I don,t reckon
we would have got to base with the last twoquestions as well. [¢tc wtzw owf a/f!'mc/
From that session we moved to variousreports and heard that primarily (a) we werefinancially in the black and (b) the Paperpick-up needed a replacement worker.
V/e also considered we should inviteDeacon Paul Crowe along to a meetmg andthat will be sought by our Chairman.
Something a little different from aJoke:
My educatiom is still behind the times, but I recently caught up with a word,'PARA-PROSDOKIANS,. These are
_fig#res a/spcccfe in which the latter part of asentence is surprising or unexpected and isfrequently humorous; apparently WinstonChurchill loved them. Some examples are:-
1 Where there,s a will,I want to be in it.
2 The last thing I want to dois hurt you. But, it,s still on my hst.
3 Iil agreedwithyou,we'd both be wrong.
4 Going to Churchdoesn,t make you a Christian, any more than standing in a garagemakes you a car.
5 rm supposed to respect my elders, but it,s getting harder and harderfor me to f|nd one now.Our next meeting is on Wed, April 10
at 7.30 in the Pines clubrooms. Be preparedfor the next Formation session - there aresome basic questions we need to addressincluding Confirmation. In the meantime,Be Happy) Laugh out Loud, and God Bless.

ABERFOYLE PAFIKIn the Both year of the Branch at
Aberfoyle Park, I find myself reflectingon what the Branch does, and has done inthe past. This question often arises whenwe try and recruit members and have todescribe and outline what the Knightsactually do. The statement has been made anumber of times to me, which can be takenwith a degree of offence, that we arejust agroup of ultra conservative men that justhave meetings and drink large quantities ofred wine.
Without quoting several areas ofscripture, it is of my significant belief thatChristian Service is a non-negotiable andmajor part of Catholic llfe. To thieve themotto from Rotary) I have belief'in ,Screv!'feaboyc Segr' When our Branch is reviewedin this context: we are a group of'Catholicmen, all with the same ideal of service, and utilising the Knights as a joint focusln this regard. Our Branch is extremelyactive within the Parish and community, with the Knights being only a small part of'their Christian life of Service. Our BranchMembers participate in, or have past

the sick and lonely within the Parishand Community
• Lions and Rotary
On reflection, our Branch activitieswithin our Parish include:

. Hosting Australia Day Brealefast
. Hosting Rew7Cl776rciwce Dc]y celebration
. Fundraising outside the Parish forParish projects

Although our Branch is only a smallgroup, we support our fellow Knights, theirfamilies, and the Parish, and encouragespiritual, social and intellectual activities.
Many will say that I am (preaching toconverted,, and 'we all know this stuff,,however as we are seriously working hardat obtaining new Members we must thinkof what we do as Knights, particularlywlthLn our Bra.nches, and be proud ofit!

SOUTHERN CF]OSS GOLF CLUBThe new season commenced with
a 4BBB Stable ford event on Jam 6. Wehave been fortunate thus far that thetemperatures have been warm but nottoo hot. However, I suspect that the mostrecent golf day was marred by the earlierforecast of hot conditions as only a smallnumber played - fifteen in total.
Our program for the year is very similarto previous years. Good numbers lnJanuary
give us hope that we have between 30 and40 players each month.
Plans for thlS year,S Horsham eventare being thought about already - herewe are in March, so June long weekendis only 3 months away. This year is the60th year of competition between the twostates - Victoria and South Australia. This occurred at Ballarat in October 1960.Because the distance to Ballarat was quitefar for the South Australians, it was decidedthat a course approximately midwaybetween Melbourne and Adelaide wouldbe sought. Through various connectionsof the Knights, Horsham Golf Club wasapproached, and the rest is history -- 2019will be the 59th year at Horsham.
our association with the Horsham clubhas been assisted by two golfing Knightswho live in Horsham- Stan KerrandBobHayes. These two have been significantcontributors to the weekend over manyyears. The recent death of Stan Kerr will beone of great sadness to many of the regular
players at Horsham. May /Ie rCSr l'ro PCaCC.

ii= ©Ireceivedabook_for Christmas from our younger daughter - it was by
stephen Hawlein eutLtled 'BriofAnsu)ere to the Big Questions,.
ty _ Q!rfeys2 As you probably know Srepfoc,e HaLVkl'tt
had an extraordinary life, was a brillianttheoretical physicist, was slgniflcantlydisabled with motor neurone diseaseand this was his flnal lot Of thOughtSconceming life on earth. He died durlngMarch 2018 while the book was still indevelopme nt.
3 Hawkin's first article was headedlJs chc,a a God?) and he explained that
he didn,t have a grudge against God,that his work wasn,I about proving ordisproving the existence of God, butabout flndlng a rational framework tounderstanding the universe.
4 He made the polnt that he believed inscience and that there were certain lawsthat are always obeyed. If one believedthat the laws were the work of God, thenhe held the view that that idea was morea deflnitiOn Of God than a proofof'hisexistence.I
5 The theorist then proposes a scenariousing Einstein's famous equation, I- mc2, and states that Mass (m) canbe thought of as a kind of Energy (I)and vice versa. So instead of three (3)ingredients making up the universe(Matter, Energy and Space), theingredients contracts to two, Energy andSpaces anc\ chey came \nto spontaneousexistence at the event labelled as the (BigBang'.
6 Stephen Hawkin then asks the question;from u,here did this Universe come? ALndhe points to something called (Negaf!'t,aI-gy' whlch is demanded by the laws ofphysics;it was produced when lPosl'fl't,a Ettcrgylwas produced at the ,Big Barog, and hebelieves that this Negative Energy residesin and is spread through Space.
7 The theorist believes that the Universeis like an enormous battery storlngNcg4f!t/a I"ergy and that everythingadds up to zero and that his point (i.e.the universe adds up to nothing) ishard to grasp. Apparently conjurlngup lsomething out of nothing) is possiblein the sub-atomic world leading on tothe Universe popping into existencewithout any assistance (like Protons)."
8 I have to agree with Hawkins thatunderstanding the phenomena ismind boggling and I must admit thatIjust cannot 'gef !'f'. So at this stage ofmy reading, I,ll pass over the sectionand move on co the rest of the book. However, the author concludes thesection with his simplest explanation:"... there is no God. No one created the
universe) and no one dtrects our fate...I think beliofin an afterlife is justu, ishful thinleing... But there is a senseof living on, in our irfuence and in ourgenes that u)e pass on to our children.

9 I hope I,m not being arrogant, butI reckon that Stephen Hawkin tookthe wrong track. For many yearsI was interested in developing amathematical/physics approach to thestudy of social theory: it rested on fourfundamental constructs - parallelingthe standard classical Physics ones of theearly 1950,s that are still in vogue
(I thinle).
10 After settling the foundations, myanalysis, after some 20 years and a lotsimpler maths, resulted ln a COherentmodel which, I thought, also broughtissues ofa spiritual -Cure into thearena. At that stage of the exploration,I had had quite enough, and decided to'/eavc I/?eJie/d, after signalling the four

interlocking prlme determinants Ofsocial cohesion - Truth balanced byWisdom and Openness balanced byLove.
ll I also considered that when thosefour parameters were taken to theirmaximum levels, the language of thespiritual realm was flagged: AbsoluteTruth is met by Co-plete Wisdomand Eferro¢J Love comes againstLimitless Openness.
However, that idea pushed me intoanother four (4) years foraging aroundand in the social system examinlngother major topics like ftl, ffo, Kroow/ccrgre,Dignity) Justice, Communication, the twoAuthorities, Obligations, Beliofs, Mutuality
plus some others.12 I concluded that unless we have some
understanding of how we are 'tJ,/,red,Ithat we are all part of the same creationand that we should take this path of'dlscovery' then it isn't much goodtrylng tO figure Out the existence ornon-existence ofa Supreme Being.
13 I also thought it was comforting tonote that a revered and historicalfigure Uesus Christ) drew attentionto Loayc as one of the comer stonesof social lnteractlon in His preachingand sermons some 2000 years ago;and remember, He also emphasisedthe other three factors of Trwffo,Wisdom a.nd Ore-ess.

i f?e Pare 4.. I understand that StephenHawklng's answers or explanations hadto be brief and hls views would be opento argument. But his belief that the lawsof sclence, discovered or unearthed byhuman society is just a definitlon of Godand not pointers to the existence of Godsurprlses, probably amazes me. I feelthat he's off track. I consider also that weearthllngs cannot define an lnfinlte Beingusing tools or theorles which we deviseor discover; in my view, they can only be
pointers-
ii f?e Protons - I)are 7.. I understoocl that protons
popped in and out of existence - they didn'thang around for long!
iii I?e Pa,a 5 fo Pare 8.. So, what,s my concluslonabout this first article in Stephen Hawkin's book- I haven't as yet read the remainlng chapters.
Para 8 provides his own conclusion which inshort says there is no God, no after life andthe only Hope we humans possess ls whatis passed (in our genes) to our children. lt,s
a Secularist's outlook. As a Christian with the

But I don't have the same sort of certalntyin Science that consumed stephen Hawkln, although one must acknowledge and applaudhis Intellect pltched toward the field of Astro-
