NRMCA is pleased to announce the Mississippi Concrete Association as the winner of the 2019 State Association of the Year Award. Some MCA programs highlighted in its submission include:

Build With Strength Mississippi Campaign

MCA has a fully implemented statewide Build With Strength campaign, including promoting to MCA members, architects, engineers, contractors, developers and the general public. MCA also shares Build With Strength information with state, county and local politicians as well as codes officials, insurance industry and the fire service.

Concrete Promotion

MCA participates in a wide breadth of conventions and trade shows within the concrete and construction industries, but also engages with school administrators and superintendents, building officials, municipal leagues and boards of supervisors. MCA held 24 promotion programs and often calls on NRMCA promotion representatives to speak as experts to these groups. In October, MCA held its own ICF roundtable, modeled from NRMCA’s programs.

Education

MCA has developed a Concrete College with nine certification classes held each year in partnership with the American Concrete Institute. In addition to ACI’s training materials, MCA produced its own video on proper testing procedures and developed a website and mobile app to further assist in this learning. MCA provides high school and college scholarships and has endowed a chair at Mississippi State University’s Bagley School of Engineering, which allows MCA a seat on the Board of the Construction Materials Research Council.

Advocacy

Through a cooperative effort with NRMCA, MCA’s lobbyist and members were successful in making Mississippi only the fourth state in the U.S. to pass legislation giving insurance rebates for new single-family structures built to the IBHS Fortified Standard. Efforts are now underway to expand this rebate to rehabilitated construction, which if passed, will make Mississippi the first state to pass such legislation.

Richard D. Gaynor AwardJerry S. Haught Jerry S. Haught has worked in the ready mixed concrete industry for more than 30 years. He most recently served as vice president of technical services for CEMEX, responsible for Florida and the Western U.S. Jerry retired from CEMEX in 2019 and is active as a consulting engineer.

Jerry S. Haught graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering from West Virginia University in 1981. He worked as a materials engineer with Williams and Associates in Clearwater, FL; a laboratory manager with KBC Consultants in Miami, FL and joined Rinker Materials in West Palm Beach, FL, in 1989. He was responsible for quality control and laboratory activities, which at Rinker was a comprehensive and recognized program in the industry. His responsibilities expanded from covering a region to corporate technical manager responsible for developing and implementing the company’s corporate quality management initiatives throughout the U.S. In 2005, Jerry took on a more managerial role as a general manager with responsibility in various regions in Florida. Following the Rinker acquisition by CEMEX, Jerry assumed responsibilities for operations, maintenance, environmental and technical services of the company’s ready mixed concrete facilities in Florida.

Jerry has been a mentor and has influenced several people who continue to be successful and maintain credibility in the industry. Some may say he was a hard taskmaster at the time. However, Jerry was never content with the status quo and demanded that the industry raise the bar on its technical proficiency so that industry personnel are recognized as important stakeholder and partners in building structures that were reliable, durable and economically feasible. Besides espousing these virtues to his reports, he advocated for this expertise in his activity with several outside organizations where he took a leadership role.

Jerry has taken leadership roles at CMEC in Florida, the Florida Concrete & Products Association, ACI and NRMCA. He was a member of ACI Committees on Specifications (301), Hot Weather Concrete (305) and High Strength Concrete (363). He made substantial contributions to the documents generated by these committees to include a practical perspective. He was a member of the NRMCA Research Engineering and Standards (RES) Committee and helped considerably with NRMCA research initiatives, advocacy on industry standards and the P2P initiative to evolve specifications to performance. He chaired the plant certification task group that made several changes in content and policy during his tenure. This included an improved discussion with equipment manufacturers and development of an inspector’s guide and qualification process.

Jerry S. Haught is a professional engineer in Florida. He lives in Jupiter and enjoys riding his motorcycle, hunting and fishing.

John Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award for Promotion

Matt WoodThe John Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award for Promotion is named in honor of former NRMCA Chairman John Watts Roberts who, over his 76-year career, was a leader in both the industry and the community. The award is given to a ready mixed concrete professional distinguished by a

career that demonstrated outstanding leadership, dedication and achievement in support of concrete promotion and industry advancement. This year, NRMCA is proud and pleased to present the John Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award for Promotion to Mr. Matt Wood.

Throughout his distinguished 42-year career, Matt worked exclusively for the Ash Grove Cement Company, now a CRH Company.

Matt led the promotional activities for Ash Grove Cement at both the national and local level. Matt held leadership roles in the Colorado Ready Mixed Concrete Association, the Oregon Concrete and Aggregate Producers Association and the Concrete Promotion Group of Kansas City. He was also on the Board of Directors of various cement promotion associations and concrete pavement associations in areas where he was based. Matt also chaired the NRMCA Promotion Plus Forums for the Rocky Mountain Region.

Matt was an early supporter of the sustainability movement in the concrete industry. He was one of the first in the concrete industry to obtain his LEED certification and even today maintains his certification in retirement. Matt was chairman of the NRMCA Sustainability Committee and a member of the steering committee for the MIT Sustainability Hub. Additionally, he served a term as chairman of the Ready Mixed Concrete Research & Education Foundation. During his term as trustee on the RMC Research & Education Foundation, Matt was a strong supporter of several notable projects, including the Guide to Concrete Overlays of

Asphalt Parking Lots and the development of the pavement design software, www.pavementdesigner.org.

Based on the successful “Eat Concrete” Day first rolled out in Topeka, Kansas, Matt lead the effort to host the first Concrete Day by the Colorado Ready Mixed Concrete Association, the American Concrete Pavement Association and the Rocky Mountain Cement Council in 2010. The concrete industry just sponsored its 10th annual Concrete Day at the Capitol in 2019. The program continues to be an outstanding outreach event for the industry.

After decades of discussion, the Utah Ready Mixed Concrete Association was finally formed in 2017. Matt Wood was instrumental in bringing together the ready mixed concrete and cement industries to make this association a reality.

Throughout his career, Matt was a consensus builder who lead by example. One could always count on Matt to staff a booth at a transportation association meeting or organize a project site tour. He not only “talked the talk,” but “walked the walk.”

and AIA CT, which includes his effort to propose an NRMCA presentation at its annual meeting and most recently to help secure the Net Zero Schools Summit held in January. Dom’s support of the NRMCA’s Hard Hat Tour program has been outstanding. The six construction site tours Dom planned, promoted and hosted were very successful in bringing 124 visitors and providing them with valuable information. His efforts to promote the NRMCA’s Regional ConcreteWorks in 2018 helped to attract over 100 registrants, making it the most attended regional event in the country. Due to that success, the Northeast was the only area of the country to host a Regional ConcreteWorks in 2019, which through his efforts resulted in 85 attendees.

Dom’s outreach through social media to communicate his activities supports other RM promoters in the region by offering them the opportunity to participate in CCPC programs and allows them to utilize his on-line presence to promote their own activities. Dom’s social media strategies are leading our industry. His frequent posts (98,651 Linked-In Post Views) and offerings of information are exactly what our industry needs to continue to do. He is advocating for the concrete industry in an area where many of his concrete industry promotion peers only scratch the surface.

Shydlowski – Turner Materials Leadership Award

David J. NicholsonEuclid Chemical Company

Mr. Nicholson started his career in the concrete industry in 1982 as an additive salesman for the Admixture Division of Master Builders and served as a sales representative and senior sales representative for twelve years in Northern Ohio. During his

tenure in Northern Ohio, his geographic area became one of the most consistently profitable territories in the U.S. According to the Moritz Family, Moritz Concrete, Inc., Mansfield, OH, “we could consistently rely on Dave to be on site for our many crucial… pours which occurred at any hour of the day or night, often times… under extreme weather conditions.” He became active with the Ohio Ready Mixed Concrete Association (now Ohio Concrete) and local chapters of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI). The value that Dave brought to his customers and specifiers was unmatched and, according to Thomas Mancino, Fairborn Cement Company, Xenia, OH, Dave was “not only instrumental in the design of mixes but also a liaison between the contractor and the ready-mixed company.”

Due to his success at the territory level and his desire to do more on a national level, Dave joined Master Builders’ newly formed Business Development Group in 1994, which served a national customer base. He was able to use his skills to help many small, medium and large ready mixed concrete producers develop strategic plans within their businesses for the use and implementation of specialty concrete mixes. Teri Moran, retired, BASF/Master Builders, said that Dave’s “customers often cited his ability to connect with their teams, his enthusiasm for helping them differentiate their product, his know-how and his passion for concrete.”

In 1996, Dave accepted the challenge of becoming a regional sales manager for both the Admixture and Construction Product Southwest Division of Master Builders, which required a relocation to Plano, Texas, with his young family. He again immersed himself into his job and the associations that served the industry in the local and regional markets.

Dave was awarded the prestigious Master Builders Master Marketer Award three times during his career with Master Builders due to his success at profitably increasing the business base in any geographic area under his responsibility.

Dave learned many things early on in his career with the most important coming from Mr. Michael Shydlowski: if you could help grow the total market for the use of concrete, all companies associated with the concrete industry share in that growth.

According to Tim Toland, National Ready Mix, “I knew that having an asset like Dave would help our company move to higher levels,” and that he “was immediately impressed with Dave’s professionalism, knowledge of the business, and his vision for the concrete industry as a whole.” To accomplish this on a national level, he became actively involved with the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association. During this time, he shifted from volunteering his time and talent at the local or state associations and chapters to the national levels of NRMCA, ACI, ASTM, ICRI, ACPA and others.

In May 2001, Dave joined The Euclid Chemical Company as divisional sales manager for the newly formed Western Division because Euclid Chemical had recently purchased Boral Materials Technologies’ USA Admixture Division in 2003. He was responsible for integrating Boral’s business base with Euclid Chemical’s. He was promoted to vice president of admixture sales in January 2005 because of his ability to successfully grow a virgin sales territory and integrate Boral’s Admixture Division into Euclid Chemical’s business model.

In 2010, Dave was awarded the prestigious President’s Blue Jacket Award for his successful accomplishments at Euclid Chemical.

Dave convinced Euclid Chemical to begin giving back to the industry on a national level as its admixture business grew. Dave again became active with NRMCA and served as a member of NRMCA’s Materials Division, ultimately becoming the chairman of the division. Under his direction, Euclid Chemical became a sponsor of NRMCA and eventually a Super Sponsor. He also became active with the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program, the Political Action Committee (PAC) and he recommended that Euclid Chemical help fund the RMC Research & Education Foundation with a major financial pledge.

Dave continued to serve as chairman of the Materials Division until his premature death on February 16, 2015. According to Tracy Moseley, retired, The Euclid Chemical Company, “no one worked harder with a dedication that was unmatched.” Kelly Curtis, Votorantim Cimentos and St. Mary’s Cement, echoed Tracy’s sentiment that Dave “created value for his customers no matter the role he held… His enthusiasm was contagious and his passion for our industry is missed.”

Dave grew up in Cleveland, and graduated from Cleveland Heights High School. He attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, graduating with honors with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He was also a walk-on member of the Ohio University baseball team, eventually becoming team captain.

Dave married the love of his life, Kathleen Clements Nicholson (Kathy), and they were happily married for 34 years. Together they raised three children, daughter Lynn Sullivan, and sons Kurt Nicholson and Matt Nicholson.
