Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses

Fall 2012 Ramón V. León

After every lecture in this class the 18 students registered were given a student satisfaction survey. One of the questions asked was:

What grade would you give the last lecture?

The percentages for each grade throughout the semester are summarized in this mosaic plot:

(1.3% C of below, 4.9% C+, 12.8% B, 36.9% B+, 42.6% A)

In a follow-up question students were asked to justify their answers by asking them this question:

Why did you give this grade?

In the next page is a Wordle summarizing the word frequency in their answers.

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • The importance of statistics in the world today. • What the expectations for this class are as far as being online. • the syllabus • That I have a teacher who clearly understands statistics, and may be relied on to help me also

understand statistics and succeed in this course. • The clearest thing was that this going to be a fairly flexible, laid back class, as far as classes are

concerned. • That the course is on-line and you are Cuban • The explanation of what is expected of us during the class. • The setup of your syllabus and understanding how the online class worked. It was very clear

how I could also take the quizzes and the best way to use the homework to my advantage. • It will be understandable if attentive to class. • The information regarding the syllabus. • The instructions on how the class is supposed to go and run. • Everything was clear. • I liked the clarity of the syllabus. Outlining exactly what we will be covering, when the exams are

and the bonus point system as well as the links to programs we will need and who to contact if we need help in each area.

• You very clearly told us about yourself, your family, and your background. I knew much more about Cuban culture and the Peter Pan Operation after your lecture.

• Do the surveys. Statistics is a growing field with numerous possiblities in the business world. Ramon is originally from Cuba and at the age of 13 was sent to the U.S. during "Operation Pedro Pan." An exodus of around 14,000 Cuban children.

What needs more explanation? • Some of the syllabus wasn't completely clear, but we can read it on our own. • All of the online stuff. I'm still a little confused as to what all I need to do online, the schedule,

homework, etc. • I am not sure whether I need to be online during the lecture time at 5:05 or whether I am able

to view the lecture afterward. Can I watch it later that day, the next day?? • A bit more on the Syllabus would be nice. • The logistics of the online class. Although I believe that it will become much clearer in the next

class session. Do we have to be at a computer at the designated class times or can we begin the lecture later online via the recording?

• How to access the online lectures and how to navigate the program. • the online homework and how too • I feel like for the first class meeting, nothing really needed to be explained any more clearly. I

understood it all really well. • I'm hoping I'll be able to figure out how to start the lecture but I'm sure it will be easy once I

actually get on next Tuesday and try. • I was not clear about operation "Peter Pan".

• Where to find everything needed for this class. Such as, where the homework will be located and the quizzes. Also, if we are to attend a certain amount of actual classes instead of online classes to take quizzes and other assignments such as the introduction of classmates like the chapter 1 slides intended.

• Are the lectures this semester only live or can I watch them later again? • How exactly the online technology will be used. • I say maybe the whole part about skype needs explanation. I didnt completely understand just

because skype was mentioned and then it was said we got to the online part of the class through blackboard.

• I can't think of anything that was left unexplained.

What grade would you give the last lecture?

A 26.667% B+ 40% B 13.333% C+ 0% C 13.333% D 6.667% F 0% Unanswered 0%

Why did you give this grade? • There were some technical difficulties (understandable) but the lecture ran over so I had to

leave early and possibly missed something important and was late to my next class • I liked the background history of life!! Cool! • Because I enjoyed getting to know the professor. • Your video and mini-biography were great. The organization was a bit out of whack on the

expectations of the class. The technology and punctually situations led to the "B" grade. • Overall entertaining. Only issue was tech. problems. • You were late, you kept us late, and we did not talk about when grades will be posted,

troubleshooting, etc. • It was a first lecture and I have no standard by which to grade it, but I had no major qualms. • Because I was still left a little confused about the course but am still excited for the year and to

learn statistics. • Because you were late and seemed unprepared. • Because my expectations were exceeded. • because of being late and not prepared, but overall the intro was great • I felt the explanations of your syllabus and goals toward the class a success. I gave you a B just

because sometimes i couldnt hear you and the skype issue. • Overall, the lecture was kind of confusing. I didn't really get any useful information about the

class out of it. • Because I felt like you described the objectives of the class pretty clearly. • Prof. Leon was very interesting to learn about.

How could I have improved the last class? • more prepared • I believe the only thing you could do better would to make sure everyone is on the same page. I

have just been a little confused is all. No big problem though. • Maybe being more prepared and spending more time explaining what the online stuff entails

and how to use it. • Maybe conclude on time. Overall though, I enjoyed the lecture. The pictures and videos were

interesting and I appreciate your sense of humor • We went just a little over time. • Maybe only to have the technology ready • You could have familiarized yourself with the technology of the classroom prior to the first

meeting. • It was perfect. No improvement necessary. • Just the tech. issues. • You spent a lot of time struggling with how to work the technology in the classroom even

though you claimed to be the professor who is best at using technology. You could've had more familiarity and been more prepared for the new technological situation before the class.

• Get there a little earlier. Guessing that won't be an issue with the online classes. Slow down a bit and get organized. Have a more deliberate order.

• A detailed syllabus handout with completion dates would be a good start. • Improvement can done in the sound, in my opinion. • Cannot think of anything that needs much improvement. • Could be more prepared with computer setup to the projector/smart board.

How was the sound quality in this last class? • fine! • It was good. I had no problem understanding. • Great! • Pretty good. I had a small amount of trouble hearing you. I sat about halfway back and if this

weren't an online course I would move closer to the front in the future. • Good • A bit hard to hear in the large room. Speaking a bit louder would be nice. • Great. • The sound was good once it got to working. • No. • Sound quality was good. • once the sound worked it was great • It was good. The classroom wasn't too large so I had no troubles hearing you. • It was good quality except for a few occasions. • I heard you just fine. We will see how well everything works online.

August 28 Attempts 19 (Total of 19 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • The different types of data, who what when where why, and catagorical and quantitative. All are

clear. • What data was and how it is used in the world, and also how surverys can be misleading. • That statistics aren't just simple numbers. Statistics is very, very complex requiring high levels of

infrastructure and organization. • syllabus • The clearest thing to me was the difference in Categorical and Qualitative data. Explained that

very well. • The two categories were clear to me I think. Along with the w's. • The explanation of the important steps of collecting data was very clear to me. • How data is separated into two categories - categorical and quantitative, and just because it has

a number, does not mean it is quantitative. Also, using the "W's" to determine what the data represents.

• The difference between categorical and quantitative data. • The chat function is not as easy as it looks. Statistics are used every day. The media uses

statistics to explain political associations. • the different applications of statistics. • the difference between categorical and quantitative data • I liked your information on the graphs with category vs number and the identifiers. I thought the

class was overall satisfactory, it's a new program so I'm alittle confused. • The technical content, especially related to poling such as categorical and quantitative

information. • The M.E. of statistics. It is there to show that different polls of data will produce different results

and percentages. • Everything was clear, but the online set up was distracting. • Different categories of types of data. • The distinction between the quantity, identifier and categorical variables. • Types of stats (categorical, etc.)

What needs more explanation? • N/A • The types of Variables will take some practicing. • You used some terminology like p-hat, which I wasn't familiar with and had to look up. I now

know that it represents proportion. • Our schedule. • I think I got the first lecture coherently. • Curious about ordinal variables. Interesting that they can be used as both qualitative or

categorical • nothing • I think you had issues with seeing our responses on Blackboard Collaborate. • Some of the information came a bit fast, and required re-reading the lesson material. Once it

was re-read, there was no need for any additional explanation.

Page 7: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

7

• The use of all applicable software and areas we need to visit for specific assignments. • Nothing so far. • I would like to see more statistical applications in our everyday life, so that I may get a better

grasp on the use of Statistics. The examples that were discussed in this last lecture really clarified a lot for me. But I want more!

• I think that the margin of error, proportions, and samples lingo of statistics could be explained better just because it is confusing to me.

• I'm confused what out "homework" is. Do we have online homework? I'll look at the syllabus again and see.

• chat • I got a little confused on how to determine what kind of variable a quantity is. • You could have gone over the variables a little more, but not too bad. • How to use the different functions on the classroom interface. • Nothing so far

What grade would you give the last lecture?

A 21.053% B+ 21.053% B 21.053% C+ 26.316% C 10.526% D 0% F 0% Unanswered 0%

Why did you give this grade? • The technical content was fine, but the online tech. usage was a bit sketchy. If we can work out

the chat system, it would be a fairly decent class system. • The only reason I didn't give an A was the technical difficulties. We all need our "chat

permissions" turned ON in order to chat. Otherwise it sends a private message to you, but apparently you weren't getting any of mine that way either. Also, explaining some of the shorthand annotations could have made it a little easier to understand.

• Do to the inability of the majority of the students to be able to chat with the professor during the class.

• because it's a new program and hard to hear your lecture. • Enjoyed the lecture. Found it interesting and explanations were clear. • great first day, glad u went really slow, but the technology is still a lil difficult • Clear understanding of the beginning material. • Because the online format was distracting. • No questions I had were left unanswered. I learned more in this first class, than I have learned in

all of my physical classes so far this year. • Because there were a lot of technical details that need to be ironed out to provide a smoother

class period. • Everything was understood.

Page 8: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

8

• There were some technical difficulties, but I do understand that it was the first class. I think the lecture went very well and I really enjoy how you teach.

• Was great except for chat difficulties • You made sure to go slow and make everything clear even though we were having problems

with the chat. • The lecture and notes were good, but there were some technical difficulties the need worked

out before any graded responses. • Due to technical difficulties. • The technical difficulties did become a bit of a distraction, plus we weren't able to participate

fully. The material seemed just a little choppy from this. • I was a little bit confused with everything in general just because the online will take a class or

two to adjust to. • i thought everything was very clear about the lecture.

How could I have improved the last class? • Iron out the bugs in the Blackboard Collaborate. Give some examples or request that the

students take a moment to give you some examples. • Give all the students chat permissions so that way we can respond and ask questions. • testing it out more before class began • The technology could be better understood by everybody in the aspect of how to use it. The

lecture overall went well i believe. Sometimes you went fast and I would have to play back the recording but it is ok.

• For some reason our chat privileges got cut off in the middle of the class, so there was no way to continue to answer questions. but I think that is the program's fault, not something Prof. Leon did.

• Figure out how to view our responses. • Talking more about our schedule, what our homework consists of, etc... • Resolve any technical problems. • i can't write in the chat which is a major problem. answer your phone or on the chat • It was nothing you did but the chatting problems caused for some wasted time. • Like the last question, pretty much the only thing was explaining the annotations or at least

writing out some of the shorthand since maybe not everyone knew what they meant. • Figure chat out • Still some challenges with all the technology. • Fix the messaging issues. • The chat. I could not see anyone response towards the end. Although I know that's not your

fault and you're working on it! • i say just explaining the identifiers and the other variables a little more. • IT support would have needed to be on hand to fix improve the last class. • The course content needed no improvement. I thoroughly enjoyed it. • Please improve the tech issues.

How was the sound quality in this last class? • The sound quality was good. • the sound was very good, i understood everything

Page 9: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

9

• Sound quality was ok. I had to turn the volume all the way up on my computer, so I think you could use to be a little louder maybe. I was still able to clearly hear you and understand you though so that is ok also.

• The sound quality has been fairly decent. Thumbs-up. • it was poor but im getting speakers • The sound quality was adequate. There were a few times where is was muffled and only a

couple of times did the sound become offset with your video (giving you a little bit of a chipmunk voice for a few seconds).

• The sound quality was good. • good. • Good. • Could be a bit louder. • Sound was fine. • I could hear and see you just fine, but I do not think that the Talk feature worked on my end. • It was superior. I have no complaints! • Great. • great • Great • very good, no problems • Good. I could hear everything clearly.

August 30 Attempts 17 (Total of 18 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • Nothing, really. It was all very confusing, I didn't learn anything because the online format is so

buggy. • Statistics are very visual. There is a variety in they way stats can be displyed. The visual

orientation of the stats can be both productive and counter-productive (cp). They can be CP if the audience is not aware of exactly what they are looking at.

• It was great to be able to go back on your lectures and see recordings that allowed for everything to be clear. I've really enjoyed how you make sure we know what's going on and go at a good pace.

• The waters were a bit muddled in the last class. It became a little confusing, because of several different elements. The stop and go, the data information used for examples is really hard to keep up with when we are interrupted.

• How to take information from different charts and use it in different ways. • The placement of different categories of information in different charts depending upon what

you are trying to convey. • bar charts • The frequency table. • The perentages and relative frequencies and how to recognize them in charts. • how to create a chart. • The examples. • The different kinds of charts and tables • It seems that there are different charts or graphs to use which better suit the data. Determining

which visual aid to use that best displays the many different types of data, essentially illustrating the data, is an important part of statistics.

• All of it. • I had a hard time following the last lecture, but I learned about about quantize and categorical

variables. • The different types of charts all made sense to me. • The purpose of using a bar graph rather than a pie chart

What needs more explanation? I would like to really go over the last class again, but from I was able to comprehend it made sense.

• stats lol • I feel as if you tend to cover more numbers and examples and less of the definitions and

terminology. • I need more info about independancy. Hoping the homework assignment will help with that. • A summary of Chapter 3 would be nice. • I got a nice overview of everything since it was nicely explained in the notes but, unfortunately, I

didn't feel like I got enough small details because it was difficult to hear. • All the symbols for variables and p hat and stuff like that. what are all those symbols? • Some of the concepts

Page 11: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

11

• I am not very sure why there is such a variety in the charts and tables. Is there an objective mechanism in place to determine why you would choose one method over another, or is it just based on the subjective effort of the author?

• Maybe spend more time explaining what some of the terms mean. I've never heard a lot of them before.

• Everything. I don't know what we're talking about in class. Right now I can only learn from the book.

• Idk because I had technical difficulties after the frequency table and there was no sound. • The segmented bar graphs i thought needed more explanation. They seemed hard to

understand and read to me. • Nothing... this section was easy • Everything in this lecture was well explained. • the relevancy of the data. • Top hat needs more explanation in my opinion. Your class has been going great but still not sure

about top hat.

What grade would you give the last lecture?

A 17.647% B+ 17.647% B 23.529% C+ 23.529% C 11.765% D 0% F 5.882% Unanswered 0%

Why did you give this grade? • A lot of things were barely touched on and unclear, but this could be due to the audio problems. • The technical difficulties are still distracting. • Because the chat function still did not work and the sound quality was very poor. The entire

lecture sounded like it was given under water. • Good, but not perfect • For the part of the lecture that I was able to hear, the sound quality was not very good. There

was a lot of background noise echoes and I could hardly hear what you were saying. • The sound was a bit muffled. I felt confused about some explanations because I couldn't

understand your words as much this time. • While the audio and chat were still issues, the slides seemed to jump and skip a bit and the

aforementioned comment about content coverage. • This "C" is only for effort. The audio was terrible and difficult to understand and keep up. The

rhythm of the lecture was not able to keep my focus. • it was alot more thorough and well prepared • Because I couldn't understand anything. • It was an ok lecture but the technical problems made it difficult to follow and it makes me worry

that i haven't learned all the things, but i'm not sure. • It was hard to hear and I was slightly confused due to this.

Page 12: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

12

• Everything was well explained • Your lectures have been awesome. You have gotten across the important factors we need to

learn while keeping it entertaining and not boring. • My video and audio feed kept stalling very badly so sometimes i think i missed part of what you

were saying. • As I was sitting in the room it was easy to understand and comprehend the information given. • I would give the lecture an A. But the technology interfered with the lecture to the point of

making some of it incomprehensible. But the blame for that falls on poor network infrastructure, not you the instructor. If I had to rate the technology I would give it a C.

How could I have improved the last class? • go over more of how to read harder graphs and charts maybe. • By fixing the technological problems. • Fix the chat funtion • speak clearer or maybe have subtitles • Once the sound is figured out it should be fine! • Any downsides of the last class were out of your control. • Nothing. • Give a summary of the objectives to accomplish at the beginning of each class for that class

session. Perhaps some key elements to be sure to focus on and to think of examples to ask about. Perhaps give out before the session begins on Bb.

• Spent more time on phrases and terms specific to Statistics. • Really you haven't done anything wrong. Your lectures have been smooth and are going great. • If we could get the technical issues fixed, it would be great. • Remove the technical barrier. • Speak a little more clearly. • Just the chat and the sound • A bit deeper explanation into why naming of the data is important. • Spend a little more time explaining some of the terms and their definitions. • Better microphone? The chat function will definately help because we can ask questions.

How was the sound quality in this last class? • The sound has been great so far this year. No problems so far. • I had trouble hearing what you were saying for the most part of the class. Even though I had my

volume maxed out. • It was good, just the delay from the audio made it hard. • A bit muffled. And with not being able to watch your mouth because of the video delay, I felt

like I missed some of your words • The sound quality was worse than the first class. It was very muffled and difficult to understand.

It hendered learning the subject. • In and out. • not so great • Good • make the sound clearer and much louder. I had my volume settings all the way to the the

highest setting and with my headphones on could still barely hear. Very difficult to understand

Page 13: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

13

the lecture. The voice is fine and the accent is clear, but the microphone sound is bad. And the microphone is too far away from Dr Leon. It needs to be 80% louder than it is.

• Not good for the part of the lecture I could hear. • A bit quite at first, but improved near the end. • It was great! • Poor, but improved after you got our comments through Chad. • Muffled. • Pretty bad. Made it hard to understand what was going on. • Poor • very poor

September 4 Attempts 17 (Total of 17 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you? • The setup of the histogram and when to use it versus using the stem and leaf graph. • The types of graphs are easy to understand. • The uses of the different types of graphs. • I understood the advantages of using different types of graphs. • the difference between a histograph and a bar chart, how to find the median • the historgrams and the stem and leaf graphs were very clear to me • THe dynamics of a histogram (shape, humps, mode, symmetry, etc.) • I really understood the data with the leaf plots. • Stem and leaf plots. • The uses for the graphs and the stem-leaf plot. • the topics covered. Everything was fairly clear. • sound quality • All of it was clear. Stats are great! • The concept of the bin size and the concept of median. • Everything, but the examples mostly. • the graphs • Honestly sir, I had a hard time with this one due to the fact that I have been put on the night

shift for work and had to use the recording of your lecture and it did not fully cooperate.

What needs more explanation? • bar graphs • when is the first test, and where is there homework each week??? • I understood really everything during the lecture, so no need for more explanation. • N/A • stem and leaf and how it is usefull how to find the IQR • The stories are confusing me that I think we may be required to read and report on? When are

they due? And what exactly are we supposed to do for them? For some reason my chat wasn't working at the end of the class today. Otherwise I would have asked!

• Which charts to use when. • The JMP stuff could be explained a little more, but I am sure you will be going over that at a

later time. • How to read certain graphs or data. • Everything was explained clearly • How to use JMP and the other programs for this class. • Nothing really. • I will go back on a friends computer and try and pull it up because I only got bits a pieces of your

lecture. • Nothing • The usefulness of either or. Perhaps some of the data escapes a bit. By the time I get a grasped

of the data displayed, then we are moving on. It is not too bad though. A part of it is the technical difficulties, but we seem to be improving strongly in that.

• example of the quartiles.

September 6 Name Stat 201 Generic Survey Attempts 17 (Total of 17 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • that you can explain the spread with 3 things, the range, the IQR, or standard deviation • The difference between mean, median, and mode. • How to calculate a standard deviation was pretty clear. • I understood the majority of the last lecture. • I was not able to attend this lecture. • How to summarize distributions of quantitative variables numerically. • A considerable amount. I really have a good grasp of quartiles, median and mean now. • How to use the averages of the first and third quartiles to find the standard mean. • solid class, i could understand and interact with you • All of it • Everything was pretty clear...the sound and everything. Was great. • The difference between types of plots. • standard deviation • When you were going over the mean and median for problems. I felt like at the beginning you

really made sure we knew what we were getting into. You took time to make sure we understood it all and that way it made the rest of the class a little easier to follow.

• The problem for how to setup and deal with variances. • Everything was clear. Thank you for going over the tree and leaf issue again, and the quartiles.

They are also now clear. • Nothing was very clear because I wasn't sure what we were talking about.

What needs more explanation? • Nothing too much. Maybe make sure we understand all the formulas that we have gone over

just to be sure we have them down. Other than that great job so far! • I was not able to attend this lecture. • What are the main points that we need to get out of each section? • How to read the data representation in JMP models • Some of the standard deviation information toward the end of the class lost me a bit. • Maybe more on the Q1 and Q3 • What I didn't understand I was able to figure out on my own..but it was only a minor question

that was easily resolved by re-reading chapter 3. • how to determine larger standard deviation by just looking at graphs • need more practice finding the standard deviation • I am not sure at this point. The HW seems to be straightforward. • Nothing. • Honestly, nothing at all. • When you use the different plots needs a bit more explanation. • Everything was clear • discuss more of the charts and what's missing • the jmp program • The IQR and outlier topics are confusing to me.

What grade would you give the last lecture?

A 35.294% B+ 47.059% B 11.765% C+ 5.882% C 0% D 0% F 0% Unanswered 0%

Why did you give this grade? • You were spot on and held a good pace. We had some questions and felt engaged. No technical

issues. I would have been an "A" had it not been for the last bit with JMP and some of my confusion with the data.

• We made excellent progress through the material, now that the technical issues are worked out. I look forward to the rest of the semester's lectures.

• Good class, good sound, some data was given too quickly. • The visual and audio was much better this class. • I thought the lecture was very understanding. • it was a great and clear lecture, did great at explaining things in detail, and keep the alien avatar

on hahaha. • Everything was top notch. No technical issues or anything. • Because there were no technical issues but there were still a few times whenever something

was being explained and I got confused within the explanation. • because it was the best class we've had yet • Most everything was clear and the technology worked great. • Easy to understand, asked us questions which got us engaged on the WORKING chat...hooray! • we were able to ask questions and get answers this time so I was able to get clarification on

anything I wasn't clear about • The technical glitches were all corrected and it was a very responsive lecture. • Unfortunately I am still having to do the recordings due to work but that should only be one

more class period. About half way through the recording it stopped working for me. Other than that I thought it was great that is the only reason why I gave it the score I did.

• Based on input from my classmates. • Because it was an unhelpful lecture. • The technical difficulties are almost all gone, and we are now able to cover more material. The

fact that we can all chat, and read them really helps.

How could I have improved the last class? • Make clearer drawings when writing on Powerpoint slides. • N/A • I was not able to attend this lecture.

• Continue asking us questions...I like being engaged. • I really liked the shark in my opinion. • not go off topic soo much • You had a good pace up until the end and then it felt a bit rushed. It takes a moment for me to

register what the data is that is displayed and until that has been done it is difficult for me to grasp the Stat concept being taught.

• Not spend so much time on elementary topics like mean, median, and mode. • No improvments needed! • ask more questions • Maybe instead of being a shark you could be a lion or bear! But seriously there was not much

you did wrong. I really enjoy your lectures online. They give me the chance to do them on my own time. Thanks!

• Loved it, no complaints!! • Nothing. It is now working very well, technically, and the content and explanations are excellent. • You sometimes get sidetracked and you will talk over a topic and cover certain points, but then

leave some points out and I get lost in the explanation of the process and then get confused. • Being more structured and clear in how you present the material. • can't think of anything, it was a good lecture • Go a little slower on the explanations.

How was the sound quality in this last class? • The sound quality was extremely better than the last class. • Good, but could be louder. • Great! • I was not able to attend this lecture. • ok • Best sound so far and I would be estatic for that quality in the future. • very good, and I liked the avatars • Excellent. • The sound quality was excellent. I could hear you great and had no technical difficulties. • Very Good. • purrfect • Superior! • It was very good, I understand everything that you said during the lecture. • Very good. • very clear

September 11 Attempts 19 (Total of 19 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • bar graphs • Using standard deviation to find the averages of change in costs for the next unit • Everything • What to look for in the graph. • How to calculate IQR • The interquartile range and how it is used to make box plots. • I couldn't tell you • The clarification of standard deviation from the last class. • the IQR and boxplots. • The material covered. • Standard deviation is a measure of spread. • You have been clear this entire time. You do a great job making sure we get what we need to

know from lecture. From the ones I have been able to attend live they have been fantastic. I only seem to have problems with the recordings when I need to go back and watch them due to work. This should be the last time I am unable to attend the live lecture. Thanks for being understanding of our situations and allowing us to work with you even though it is an online class. That's a really cool aspect of class.

• How to find the IQR and Q3 and Q1. • The real-world way stats are used • Standard deviation is more clear. Can measure spread with IQR, range or SD • I was not able to watch the last lecture because on blackboard collaborate, it will not pull up the

recording. It says that it cannot find the recording. So I am still filling out this survey, but I tried to watch the class and I could not. I am curious as to how our tests our going to be different from other people's test who are actually taking statistics in a classroom setting. How will they know to give us a test that has less material on?

• All topics were clear • How to find the fence and whiskers. • I was out sick and could not attend this lecture.

What needs more explanation? • Nothing, really. • The fences confused me but I'm going to read chap 5 and see if that helps as well...also my

building had a fire drill so I missed 30 min of class unfortunately. • Fences and how to find them. • I only got through about half the recording before it froze up and then came up error so I will

have to go back before the test on my own time and re-watch the remainder of the lecture. • N/A • The whiskers concept left me a just a bit confused. I was close to fully grasping it. • I wish I could tell you • Standard deviation and SD equation. Also info about the test. • Nothing from last class. • I understand it, anything I may have had questions about were resolved by reading chapter 5.

Page 19: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

• nothing • A bit more into the way outliers affect the boxplots • How to add on to the IQR, such as the fence example that we went over. • no questions this time • Since I was not able to watch the lecture, I cannot answer this question. • Nothing. • The only part i got lost about was is it always 1.5 when multiplying to find the fences. • I was out sick and could not attend this lecture.

What grade would you give the last lecture?

A 26.316% B+ 47.368% B 15.789% C+ 0% C 5.263% D 0% F 5.263% Unanswered 0%

Why did you give this grade? • Materials were well explained. • You did a good job explaining everything and taking the extra time on topics that needed further

discussion. • The class notes did not show up in the video. I was only able to hear the audio, no visual aids

were available. • I gave this grade based upon the communications I have received from you regarding the

technical upgrades. The tech. problems were the only reason for previous lower grades. • going well, thanks for taking the time to answer questions and explain what we didn't

understand • Because for my circumstances the lecture did not exist. • Simply because I could not finish the lecture due to technical difficulties. • Everything was clear and organized • very understanding • It was very clear and understand but their was a vague point about the multiplying for the

finding of the fences. • It was an informative class. It solidified some previous teachings and built upon new concepts as

well. • Technological issues are minimal and I could read your formulas better when you drew them on

Powerpoint. • it's average so I chose it • Everything was fine. No glitches in the video or anything. • Excellent explanations, and succinctly laid out. • Because my expectations were meant. • Just a bit confused about the fences.

20

• Because it was clearer than the other ones, I learned more. • Everything was clear and well taught.

How could I have improved the last class? • Explain your math and how you are getting all the numbers when adding on to the IQR. • I am sure you did fine on the lecture, but again because I was not able to view the lecture I

cannot answer this. • Honestly sir, you are doing nothing wrong. Great class so far, just wish I was able to get all the

recording. Should not be a problem for the remainder of the semester. • Going slower on everything. • Keep up the good work :) • I guess explain the fences in a brief overview. • Pause before moving to the next topic or data set. Sometimes they tend to run together and I

have to backtrack a little to realize where you are at. • i'm not sure, i was sick and couldnt concentrate on the online class • Could not be improved • Check recordings. • No improvements needed. • It was great, no improvement needed. • A few sound issues, but nothing major. • not spend soo much time going over the entire lecture from last time • Fix the skipping in the powerpoint slides. • Think we are ready to try break out groups or JMP. It helps me to work the data out myself, I

then understand it better • no suggestions • I thought every class has been a good lecture and just maybe more detail about some things. • I was out sick and could not attend this lecture.

How was the sound quality in this last class? Great

• Unable to watch the class so unable to answer. • excellent • For the most part very good. • Very good. I could hear perfectly. • Excellent. • The sound quality was excellent. • Very Good • pretty good • very good, only lost the sound once I think • Great. When will more homework be put on the course compass website? • Good! • Fine. • It got weird towards the end but you fixed it so it was good. • Very good. • It was very good. • it was some dank quality

September 13 Attempts 18 (Total of 18 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • I appreciated the information on how you use the information on the surveys and your scores

over the past few classes. It was interesting to me that as the technology got better, so did your grades. It really made me take them more seriously.

• Everything • The beginning of Chapter 5. • how to make a box plot and the z score • The Z scores. • I think you did a great job going over the different graphs and plots such as timeplots and

explaining how to interpret the information given. You explained the pros and cons of each which was nice so we know when it is best to use which. You make sure we know what you are talking about and encourage questions.

• Difference b/w whiskers and IQR • i felt i understood how to find the IQR better and how to find the ranges. • sorry couldn't make it • The clearest was the portion discussing the outliers with the Guiness World Record holders. • Box plot explanation • The methods to analyse the distributions. • Once you explained the box plots again, that was very clear to me. I think I understand box plots

much better than I have before. • I was ill and could not attend the last lecture. • How to form box plots. • Fences make more sense! • JMP • How to lay out a timeplot

What needs more explanation? • I would like to go over the z score again, if at all possible. • Everything. The teaching style is too fast paced and not concise/disorganized. • By watching the videos with this chapter nothing further needed explanation. • The overall idea of the z-scores makes sense. I personally just need a little more practice on it. • The Test • The last portion was a little fuzzy in regards to the z number. I had it initially and them more

details seems to skew my thought process a bit. • From the lectures up to this point, I think I am understanding things as good as possible. • Nothing. • I was still a little confused when you were going over the whiskers and fence stuff but I plan on

going back over the lectures and making sure I understand it. • the 1.5 • i was at my brother's wedding • Nothing really. • Nothing • no questions this time

Page 23: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

23

• I was ill and could not attend the last lecture. • Z charts or whatever they were called. I can't remember. • I understood everything. • The only thing that I did not entirely understand was the concept of the Z score.

What grade would you give the last lecture?

A 61.111% B+ 22.222% B 5.556% C+ 11.111% C 0% D 0% F 0% Unanswered 0%

Why did you give this grade? All was pretty clear. Plus I'm super pumped about the study sessions!

• Everything was explained well • Because the lectures are not beneficial to me. • Because I felt like you did a good job explaining everything, there weren't any difficulties, and I

just felt pretty good about the class after the lecture. • A lot of examples, but not enough material that contain specific details on how the test would

be. • It was very clear • Everything was clear and all my questions were answered. • You went over questions that needed to be answered and even had help there with you so that

even if you missed something they would catch it. • Everything was pretty clear and understandable. • Good class, easy to understand. • I base this grade upon the improvements of our previous sessions. • You were entertaining, but also you gave good explanations. You also seemed to slow down just

a bit on some of the tougher concepts. • My expectations were met. • Mostly everything was clear and well explained. • because its average • I felt everything was clearly understood. • Because the class seemed repetitive. • As your statistical anaylsis showed, each class session has become more and more organized

and is becoming more predictable and efficient. I like that you always add a few little moments that are off topic that oes a few things... One, tells you who is paying attention, but the little break in the material, even if it is just you offering coffee, it allows for a little break and helps me to get more focused on the topic at hand.

How could I have improved the last class? • I thought it was great and needed no improvements. • I am not sure how you could have improved it. • Go slower and more examples. Don't go through the slides so quickly. • It was great. No improvement needed. • It was a good class. • No way. For some reason you did freeze a bit but I'm only writing that because I need something

to fill in this box. It wasn't distracting really. • No suggestions • ask more questions • Keep doing what you're doing. • Spend less time on the same topics covered last week. • A bit less time on questions from previous classes and more on the current topic. • I think the last class was pretty good. • Not much, but maybe spend a more even amount of time explaining everything rather than

spending too much time on one thing only to spend less time on another. • I got a little distracted by the different pictures this time, though not in other classes, so maybe

that wasn't something to improve on. I always appreciate that you are able to communicate via chat even when you are talking to the class as a whole. You have done a good job of multi-tasking.

• I think it was pretty good as is. I liked that you had help with you in person so that he/she could catch mistakes and help answer questions. Makes class run smooth.

• I was ill and could not attend the last lecture. • Not sure • no suggestions this time

How was the sound quality in this last class? • Also great! • Great! • The sound quality was overall good. It would freeze up a little every once in a while but nothing

too bad. • Ok • solid im sure • Fine! • great... heard everything well. Although, even when i have the volume up as high as it can go, i

still wish it could get a little louder. • very good • it was very good • Mostly okay, some lag time this past week. • Good. • great • sound quality was excellent • I was ill and could not attend the last lecture. • The sound quality was excellent! • Very good.

September 18 Attempts 12 (Total of 14 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • everything • Correlation. Not all of correlation is totally clear (which I will explain in the upcoming box), but I

really enjoy looking at scatter plots and the idea that correlation shows it's linear strength is clear.

• It's hard to say, I was worrying about the test • The z-score. • To be honest, nothing was really clear to me. This is a very confusing topic for me and I just do

not understand it. It wasn't your teaching style. That was fine. I have to re-watch this so I will understand it better.

• It was all very clear. • normal must be symmetric and unimodal there are 3 ways to see if the data is normal, p value,

histogram and normal plots • What was clearest to me was the P-value and goodness of fit test. I have had to practice that

through biology so it was nice to get a refresher on that technique. • Z score • How to generate a box plot. • Everything. • you're love of sushi

What needs more explanation? • Nothing. • I had a few things that I personally still am not confident on. The 68,95,99.7 rule is still a little

confusing to me. Not quite sure where to use those numbers all the time. I was also getting a little confused when you started plugging in information into your online calculator tool. I need to go back through lecture and figure out where you get that but I need to better understand what numbers go where and why.

• I couldn't really pay attention because I studied for the exam • 68, 95, 99.7 rule • N/A • I thought the lecture was very clear. • Nothing • One thing that completely confuses me is the 68-90-model. The percentages that go along with

the normal model....completely confusing to me. • It all made sense. • Unfortunately, as much as I enjoy looking at scatter plot stuff, I don't fully understand

correlation. I guess it's just hard to grasp because they can have a strong association but a small correlation. And the rules about it only being used for quantitative data and the "straight enough" rule and such just throws me a bit.

• need a little more explanation on the p value • nothing

What grade would you give the last lecture?

A 25% B+ 58.333% B 8.333% C+ 8.333% C 0% D 0% F 0% Unanswered 0%

Why did you give this grade? • because I could hear you fine and see you, but it was my fault that I didn't get the most out of

the lecture • couldn't focus because exam • For being an online lecture you have provided clear lectures that are helpful and useful. There

have only been a few hiccups along the way and most the time I understand everything you talk about.

• Because it was a complex topic and due to the test being given on the same day I was unable to attend the lecture. I'm sure my grade will reflect that.

• The lecture was understood and i got the whole lesson very well. • felt a little rushed, maybe because it was right before the exam • I felt that many of the audio and tech. issues were resolved. You also did an excellent job

answering questions and were very engaging. • My expectations were met. • Because you are teaching wonderfully. Just because I don't understand the material doesn't

mean your lecture deserves a bad grade. It would have gotten a better grade, but the audio had a slight complication that made it hard to hear you.

• because it was good • I would have given an A, but having lecture the same day as exam, so not being able to watch

lecture, made me give it a B+ • I really like the notes for this lesson. They seemed nicely laid out and (maybe just because I

enjoy looking at scatter plots) I really enjoyed reviewing them.

How could I have improved the last class? • impossible • Nothing. • No improvement necessary. It was fine. • the timing. was hard due to test • I think that last class was delivered very well. • Given it last week. • I think just maybe adding more examples. • Please turn on your video camera for the next session. • No way I can think of.

Page 28: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

• I felt like you went a tad fast in this lecture but maybe that was because we had a test that night. Other than that it was pretty good.

• make the chat scroll • You just need to ask more questions pertaining to what will be on the test. It was different from

the study guide

How was the sound quality in this last class? • Pretty good! I could hear you loud and clear. • Above good. • good • very good. • wonderful • very good • The sound quality was great for this class. No complications. • the sound quality rocks • The sound was very good. • I can't decide between Alvin, Simon, or Theodore. Which chipmunk do you think best personifies

you? Other than those couple of spurts, the audio was fine. • Good. • a little high pitched

September 20 Attempts 18 (Total of 18 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • Convergence • The way scatter plots have linear lines. • Everything • Everything. I was in class so it was good. • The analysis methods of the different distributions. • It was all very clear. Thanks! • scatterplots • It was pretty straight forward. • how to lay out a scatterplot. Knowing which goes in X and Y positions was very helpful. • How to read scatter plots. • I really thought you explained the way to deal with "cigar" scatter plots. You explained the

finding G. There were a ton of new plots to learn and you did a good job for the most part explaining them in full.

• a scatterplot is used to display 2 quantitative variable at the same time the difference between a positive and a negative scatterplot

• the masks you wore were the highlights of class • The correlation was pretty clear and how you classify /study scatterplots. • Scatter plots. Everything about them was pretty clear. • How to interpret scatter plots • Most of what you said was clear in the last lecture..but I had a little trouble following you

towards the end. • It seemed jumbled together a bit, but the clearest was the beginning and introducing

scatterplots.

What needs more explanation? • N/a • As of right now, I feel like I'm getting it pretty good, so right now nothing. • I felt everything was explained very well. • what causes the shapes of a scatterplot to vary. • I only get a little confused about z-scores. I need to review what they are. • nothing • Nothing, but I hope everything on the next exam is covered in the lectures. • I was a little confused over the banana shaped scatter plots. You starting going into taking the

square root of y and then squaring it to get a different answer. It was a little problem but I was still confused over it.

• How to standardize data. • The church of the Jedi (Jedism). • the z score is still a little confusing • The last 5 minutes of the material that we covered. But I'm sure I can figure this out by reading

the book. • The last part about the correlation. • Nothing

Page 30: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

• the averages of the correlations. • Why does the scatterplot of z scores appear steeper than the original scatterplot?

What grade would you give the last lecture?

A 50% B+ 38.889% B 11.111% C+ 0% C 0% D 0% F 0% Unanswered 0%

Why did you give this grade? • because the class went smoothly • It was a great lecture • Because Yoda is the man. • You covered a lot of ground, but it was a little difficult to keep up at some points. • A little disorganized. • I thought you did a pretty good job explaining everything and it was full of new information so

that is good. Other than the banana scatter plot I understood just about everything. • Much better than before because I was actually in his office. • Good sound, excellent questions, and a very clear. • Everything about scatter plots was clearly explained and examples were given. • good explanations • Only because we couldn't get the discussion to work. Otherwise great class. • It was a very good class. • Only the standardizing part went a little too fast, but good other than that. • Because I understood everything we covered • because it was a good lecture • You did a good job explaining things. • It was a good lecture and I didn't have any issues. • Because you covered the material well but you also got off topic multiple times.

How could I have improved the last class? • Nothing needed improvement. Every class has gotten better. • The graphs were a little too small to interpret this time. • No answer. • Stay focused on the material being taught • I think it was pretty good. I really enjoyed the star wars characters. They gave an added sense of

excitement to the lecture. • impossible • Just the discussions. That could be really cool! • No improvements needed that i can think of.

Page 31: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

31

• You definitely could have worn the yoda mask more...but really you could have probably asked more questions to make sure we are getting it. You asked a bunch of questions the first week or so but lately havent. Other than that it was great.

• just keep asking questions • Make sure everyone understood a point after you finish explaining it. • Transition between slides. • no suggestions • Nothing • No way in particular. • No • You jumped around the explanations and the data sets a bit. Also it would help to use examples

as to how the data may be utilized once observed and presented. • It was a very good class, no improvement needed.

How was the sound quality in this last class? • The sound quality was great. There was only one small stretch where you sounded like a

chipmunk. • At some points the sound got odd..but it was OK, I could still understand you. • It was plenty good enough to make things clear • The sound quality was good. • Excellent. • Good. • Good • It was not as good as recent classes. Although I was using a different computer than usual and

the audio issue may have been from my end. • It was very clear. • Great. • very good • great • the sound quality was A ok

September 25 Attempts 18 (Total of 18 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • Finding correlation using a chart of x and y variables. Also finding the correlation coefficient(r)

by using the correlation sums of the x and y values. • Calculating correlation. • Everything • I really understood finding the correlation a lot better in this lecture. I also understood the end

of your lecture when talking about what to look out for and what could go wrong. • Hidden variables and how they can effect correlation. • you can have a relationship between the variables without having correlation • scatterplots • I really enjoyed the yoda mask • Nothing because I could not watch the lecture. • The shark and ice cream example really helped clear things up for me with correlation. Also, the

variable r is very clear to me since I have done a little bit with r previously. • scatterplots (direction, form, strength, and unusual features) The sign of correlation tells us

direction • All of it • the meaning of correlation. • The types of correlation. • The correlation coefficient. • Calculating z-score. • Explaining the correlation in depth. • It was all clear.

What needs more explanation? • Nothing that I could see. • What needs more explanation to me would be the correlation conditions. I just think I had a

brain fart when watching lecture so will need to go back and review for test. • More on what can go wrong. • Nothing that I can think of. • N/A • I could not watch the lecture so...everything. • nothing • explain causation • Some explanation needs to be given for the last item you discussed, • A quick recap in the next class with what we covered to bring it all together. • nothing. • Nothing • Having trouble figuring out exactly what the straight enough condition is. Also having trouble

determining when a correlation becomes strong or weak. • n/a • I thought everything was explained very well. • None of it

Page 33: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

33

• You use new symbols every class without explaining what the symbols are, are called, and if they always mean what you use them for in the class. Please explain when you use a new symbol that you haven't used before. Like the greek E symbol for correlation, I didn't understand what that was for a full ten minutes, and I still don't know what it is called. Even using the line over the letter to indicate mean, those symbols are not obvious to all of us, until you tell us.

• The straight enough condition is a bit confusing to me. I don't understand how to tell how strong a curved graph is...or if there's a way to.

What grade would you give the last lecture?

A 38.889% B+ 38.889% B 11.111% C+ 5.556% C 0% D 0% F 5.556% Unanswered 0%

Why did you give this grade? • I really enjoyed the class discussion. It was very interesting and the examples (the shark/ ice

cream, etc.) make it fun to listen to in addition to educational. I learn new things every class, and really liked that you cleared up correlation and when you can't find correlation, etc. I like when we get to use our imagination and try to find relationships and explain the relationships between the variables.

• Other than a few issues with seeing the power point slides properly everything was great. I clearly understood the lecture and couldn't hear you very well.

• it was great • It was a bit more difficult to focus during this lecture. • Good class, good explanations. • Because there was nothing wrong! Sadly, I missed the first part of class because my apartment

internet has been acting up recently so I cannot judge for the beginning 30 minutes. • good lecture • It was clear and fairley concise. There was a good pace. • because the class was clear but you were off topic a lot. • Everything was explained very well. • You did a great job getting across everything we needed to learn. You used a lot of examples

and asked many questions. It was a good interactive class. • Everything was fine • It was great! • Awesome lecture. • There is no lecture for me to watch. • The correlation coefficient was explained better and that helped a lot. • because it was clear and concise • took me awhile to pick up what you were talking about

Page 34: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

34

How could I have improved the last class? • Nothing that I could see. • The last 20 minutes moved a little sporadically and I had to reel myself back in a bit. • It was fine, no need to improve. • N/A • Pay as much attention to the questions on the online class chat as you do to the people in your

office. Explain new statistics symbols the first time you use them. (What they're called, what they mean, if that is always the symbol for that, or just a variable.)

• None. • impossible • Some of your examples were a little hard to follow or understand but other than that it was a

great lecture. • just adding more examples of the harder problems. • maybe a bit of class participation • just keep asking questions • There was no lecture. • Make clearer drawings when you use your pen on the power point slides. • stay on topic and not talk about your personal life every class. • Nothing • Continue what you're doing

How was the sound quality in this last class? • good • the sound was very clear • Silent because there wasn't a lecture. • I turn the volume down on my computer a little bit because I could hear you so well. • Superb! • Great! • Good. • it was good • Good • Very good. Perfect. • Mostly good, a few times the sound vanished, though I could still see you doing things. Probably

a problem on my end. • Sound was good. • very good • Sound quality for me was great! • great • The audio and video were out of sinc.

September 27 Attempts 14 (Total of 15 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • everything • Not a lot. • the information towards the end I understood the most • It was all great. • The majority of your lecture this time was clear to me. I really understood the ending slides

when talking about residuals and error and how to calculate the error on a given scatterplot and line of best fit. I thought that came to me pretty easy.

• Causation and correlation make more sense to me now. I REALLY enjoyed going over those again, and feel better about it. Thanks!

• The scatter plots • I understood the slope equations. • Correlation review. • Everything was pretty clear. • I understand the difference between causation and correlation. • The entire lecture was well laid out and very clear in regards to chapter 8 • Helpful information for the assigned quizzes. • It was all clear.

What needs more explanation? • I didn't understand the explanation about why stats uses b (beta) • N/A • Even though I could follow you pretty well during lecture, the linear regression relationship was

still a little unclear to me. The y-hat formula confused me a little and dealing with b2x2 and all of that. Going over how to calculate that one more time would do me some good. Thanks!

• I need more explanation on the quiz material. The lecture I grasped. But the quizzes threw me off. The book didn't explain z-score reverse in enough detail for me to fully understand.

• nothing • Nothing that I can recall needs further explanation. • Nothing. • I don't understand how to find the regression line or linear regression really as a whole. • All seemed pretty clear. It's just another idea to grasp! • I understood the lesson. • Nothing really. • Nothing • I didn't understand the graphs well • Linear model.

What grade would you give the last lecture?

A 21.429% B+ 64.286% B 14.286% C+ 0% C 0% D 0% F 0% Unanswered 0%

Why did you give this grade? • Because sometimes i couldnt hear exactly the right thing • Because you did a great job slowing down the pace of your lecture this time. Although some

stuff may need a little more explanation, overall it was a great lecture. Even if blackboard booted me out half way through the lecture and I had to finish the lecture on recording.

• Explanations weren't very clear. • It a good lecture. I became a little confused toward the end of class. • This grade is based on a combination of content, delivery, and technical issues. • Very well laid out and very succinct. • Because everything was clear. • The sound quality was not too great which effected my session a bit...Guess I will have to stop

by (and get hot chocolate!) so sound is clear. :-) • It was a good lecture. • good class • I really enjoy the distance learning model • was a little more confused this time than previous lectures, maybe because material is getting

more complicated • It was a pretty good lecture. I just didn't really understand the material completely. • because I had a hard time paying attention

How could I have improved the last class? • notta • Cannot think of anything. • just ask more questions • No way that I can tell. • N/A • Continue what you are doing • I think that the last class was really good. I don't really know how you could improve it. • I am not sure. • nothing • I could probably use another example of the p-value. • This class was pretty good. I don't think I can think of anything that would really improve the

class other than going back over the stuff we didnt comprehend as well. I liked that you slowed

down the pace and continued to ask questions and kept the class light and laughing with jokes. Better learning environment than a stressful classroom.

• no suggestion this time • It was a good class no improvement needed. • Spend more time when introducing new stuff. Goes a little fast.

How was the sound quality in this last class? • sound quality was as good as ever. • good • It was great. • Fine. • The sound quality was good. • It was good expcept one or two times • It went in and out a few times for me. I had a bit of trouble in the beginning with getting any

sound at all and had to rejoin the session a couple times. And then chipmunk voice came about halfway through haha. But it certainly was not terrible.

• Sound quality was good. there were some lag problems, but they were most likely on my end. • the sound quality was fine • Good. • very good, no problems • Good

October 2 Attempts 15 (Total of 15 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • the use of scatter plots • Residuals. • The reason for residuals was fairly clear. • The regresssion line topic and how to find the line was more clear to me. • same conditions apply to use regression and correlation • It was a really good lecture. It all made sense. • Finding slope. Also that you will be in a parade this weekend on Saturday. I will be down there

so I will look out for you! • The correlations and how they are described. • Regression is now clear • I was unable to attend the last lecture. • all • The explanation of the regression and the concept of residuals. • I didn't get the opportunity to watch, due to work commitments. • Residuals remained clear to me as you went through them again. I seemed to continue to

understand them clearly and had no problem comprehending the problems you had. • The idea of errors and how to calculate them.

What needs more explanation? • i still have some trouble with the correlation coefficient, especially find sx and sy. • It would be good to get a quick synopsis of residuals and their role at the beginning of the next

class. • none • N/A • How to find B1 and B0 and where they come from. Went a little too fast over those. Also, the ch.

6 quiz questions about the Z-score to percentages/ % to Z-score was not clear at all. • calculating the straight line correlation within a scatter plot • nothing • Nothing. • The explanatory and predictor variables confused me a bit. • I was unable to attend the last lecture. • Honestly the biggest thing I needed more explanation on was the calculator tool you provided

us. Maybe go through a little slower and provide another example using the calculator tool. • Please explain the slope equation more. • I think I grasped everything else pretty well. • Need more explanation on Leverage • Is regression and the least square line the same thing? Can you work the problem on slide 8-28

regarding predicted value/interpret and residual/interpret?

A 46.667% B+ 40% B 6.667% C+ 6.667% C 0% D 0% F 0% Unanswered 0%

Why did you give this grade? • For a job well done! • the lecture was very clear. There was a bit too many stories outside the information needed. • N/A • You gave some good explanations. You kept the lecture light. • was clear • because i felt like we did not cover much material • I base this grade upon recent lectures. • I was struggling with the sound again. I'm unsure why. Just for half the class. • Because I understood everything • You continue to do a great job. You make sure we understand what is going on and go a pretty

good pace. • Because overall everything that was being taught was clearly communicated. • Because it was a good lecture and I understood everything pretty well. • Most everything was thoroughly explained except the equations for the B values and how to get

them. • I somtimes got confused about the correlation coefficient. • it was a good lecture, liked your Gaga glasses

How could I have improved the last class? • A few less personal stories. • I think the best way to teach us is to continue to ask questions and work examples. Letting us

see how you work it so we know how to work questions come quiz and test time. • N/A • I think that the last class was good. I don't know that there needs to be any improvement. • No improvement needed • Just made sure everything was explained well instead of almost skipping over some parts. • If it's happening to others then with the sound then I guess by improving the sound. • I was unable to attend the last lecture. • Just keep reviewing. • It was awesome! No improvement needed. • can't • You have a tendency to jump around a bit in your explanations at times. You convey the passion,

but it can be difficult to handle the subject from the student perspective.

October 4 Attempts 16 (Total of 16 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • everything • The slope equation. • No particular thing. Everything was fairly clear, although to me it feels like we're skipping around

a lot. I'm having a difficult time seeing how everything is connected and things build off other things. It just feels scattered to me.

• Everything • variation • Linear regressin in egard to crrelation. When you have correlation, you are saying that it is a

measure. It doesn't matter which is first or second, simply that they are related. Your example was Burger King's fat v. protien.

• I really understood calculating predicted values with mortgage rates. Also, you did a great job explaining the fraction of error of predicting y with the mean of y by using the regression equation.

• Interpretation of the least square line and its formula. • That R2 is the correlation squared The least square line reduces the squares of e • correlation • The sx and sy, i understood that better. • The Least Square line was clearest. • I understood it. • the whole class I couldn't really pay attention

What needs more explanation? • the R-squared model needs more explanation. • R^2 - How you came up with all the points on the graph and the line that ran through them. I

understood the (x,y) coordinate points but did not understand the rest of them. (The magic points).

• r^2 and what it means. • nothing • Sometimes i get confused because the formulas say what to do but in the example it seems they

do it differently, and it confuses me. • R-Squared makes sense but will need additional clarification. Particularly its usefulness in

interpreting data and it role. • Are the least square line and regression the same thing? If not, then how are they related? • The variation accounted for is still a bit confusing. • P values. I am having trouble figuring out the formula combination of percentiles, z scores, and p

scores. • I need more explaining on the second half of last class • Nothing really. • Nothing • There just needs to be more structure over what's being taught. Can you re-cap what the "big

ideas" and main things to know are in each chapter?

A 31.25% B+ 50% B 12.5% C+ 6.25% C 0% D 0% F 0% Unanswered 0%

Why did you give this grade? • Not everything was explained thoroughly, but not too bad. • I understood everything pretty well • amazing • It was smooth with little to no disturbances or technical difficulties. I felt like I got a grasp of

some key concepts that are going to be on the test. • It was a good class. Except for the audio, sometimes I couldn't quite make out what you were

saying. This could have been my internet connection. • I felt more explanations and examples were given. • Could use a 'lil more explanation on the variation accounted for but that's all. • Your formulas and drawings on the slides are too messy. I am having a hard time learning what

you are trying to explain because it is sometimes hard to make out what you have written on the PP slides.

• You moved a good pace and gave some good examples. You didn't jump through several data sets and you left it constant. You also sketched out some good examples.

• it was a great lecture • It was understandable, although over-all I'm still kind of lost. • because everything was clear • because I myself wasn't completely involved • good lecture, enjoyed it • Good, clear explanations on most of the class • it was pretty good

How could I have improved the last class? • no way • Another example of the variation accounted for would be great! • It was all good, except for the audio, which was most likely out of your control. • Just continue to go slow. Give examples and work through them with us. Ask a lot of questions. • Nothing that I can think of. • focus more on the material • N/A • nothing • re-capping in concise sentences what the main things to know in each chapter are. • just ask questions to keep the students alert

• impossible • The issues of finding data sets, then have the technical stutter in displaying to us. It chops up the

pace a bit. • Keep involving more examples. • no suggestions • Be more clear with your drawings. For example, when you made your chart for explaining R2 -

the variation accounted for- I was having a hard time reading your standard deviation figures. • Explain more of where you get different data such as r^2, e, etc.

How was the sound quality in this last class? • it was fine • good • It was good. • Pretty good! October 9 Attempts 13 (Total of 14 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • everything • The r squared was definitely explained better. • Very clear on the R-squared. • I was unable to attend lecture due to medical reasons. • You did a great job at first explaining R^2. I was very confused with that and feel like I have a

better understanding now that you have gone over it again. • r^2 • Everything was pretty clear. • extrapolation is not a good practice • All of it • the straight enough condition, qualitative variables condition, and outlier condition • The residuals. • Regression. Seriously, the questions answered at the beginning of class are awesome. Thanks! • It all made sense.

What needs more explanation? • R2 expresses the variance of the residuals, right? Is it expressed as a percent? • None • I was unable to attend lecture due to medical reasons. • nothing • I still feel a little uncertain about linear regression. My computer kept freezing up around that

part of your lecture but from what I got I was a little confused. Maybe going over it shortly would help me understand it better for the test. *My computer sometimes acts up with recordings of your lecture.

• extrapolation • Nothing. • Residuals, extrapolation, etc... • Good explanation on everything this class. • I'm pretty "okay" with everything we learned today but after looking through the notes I'm a bit

confused on the Equal Variance Assumption. I'm sure I can look it up in the book though and it will be more clear.

• I don't think anything needed anymore explanation. I understood everything pretty well. • n/a • I just wonder about the exam and whats going to be on it. My friend in another section said

something about her class being on chapter 18 and i didnt know about our class.

Why did you give this grade? • It was a great lecture • Excellent class. Great explanations. Little deviation from the class topic. • It was a very good lecture. • Overall everything was well explained. • good lecture, liked the real life example of the movies • I believe it was a good lecture. I continue to like the pace you go at, the questions you answer at

the beginning, and the examples and questions you ask during lecture. Keep it up. The reason I gave you a B+ was more along the lines of I couldn't understand everything due to the technical difficulties.

• The material was covered well. • I base this grade upon recent lectures. • Was a bit confusing in the beginning because I feel it bounced around while answering the

previous lesson questions. BUT I really enjoyed the movie statistics. Found it very interesting. • because it was a good lecture • I felt like i understood the chapter better. • good info • because i understood regression and the other topics

How could I have improved the last class? • no way • No improvement needed. • no suggestion • You can't • Nothing I can think of • I was unable to attend lecture due to medical reasons. • Just continue to go at a pace where we can follow you. Questions and examples are and have

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • Everything, it was a good lecture. • The residuals and the definition and the equation to find them. • The Q&A period at the end of the lecture was very helpful. • thanks to the further explanation Leverage was clearest. • regression line and residuals • outliers and leverage • Everything was pretty clear • outliers, leverage, and influence • I think reviewing the previous learned material made it more clear to me. I found R2 a lot easier

to work with on homework and quizzes. • Regressions. I feel I really understand it now. • It was all clear.

What needs more explanation? • P-Values and how much of correlation, regression, etc... we'll have to calculate. • The project? Many class say there is a project due Friday. Will we be having one? I looke on the

syllabus and tried texting and emailing you but haven't received a response. My email is [email protected]. But I will continue trying to get in contact with you!

• Honestly, at this point I am feeling decently confident with last lecture. • N/A • To find R squared. I do know what to do after it is found but if there are all values then how to

find it. • Nothing • Nothing really needs more explanation. • linear regression and causation • the last bit about the p-value. how is that used and how is the p-value derived? • Nothing, you did a great job explaining everything! • nothing

Why did you give this grade? • I understood everything pretty well • Because you explained everything very well • It was a very good lecture and I understood almost everything. It was clear and you used great

examples. • I understood more about residuals • Good pace, clear explanations, and some humor. • I feel that you have made significant improvement with clarifying questions we have. • I felt that we jumped around a lot. • Everything went well. • It was a good class! • Clear explanations for the most part, few stories that had little to do with class. • Because I understand all the topics

How could I have improved the last class? • N/A (The Q&A session is a great idea.) • No improvement needed! • You did a good job • No way • N/A • Really focusing on the main points and a single topic and staying on that topic until it's complete

and ready to move on. • Nothing I can think of. • You are doing well. • No way in particular. • Just keep giving more examples and problems to get involved in. • Just continue to ask questions and go at a pace we can keep up with. You are doing a great job.

October 18 Attempts 15 (Total of 15 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • everything • I really understood the R2 and linear regression better when you went over it again at the

beginning of class. Randomness was also very clear when taught in lecture. • Usig the P-value to determine whether or not to reject the null hypothesis in favor of the

alternative hypothesis. Ho= B1=0 , Ha= B1 DNE 0. • It was great. Everything was clear • Everything • Randomness... • I thought i better understood the regression line and equation. • The review at the beginning of class and the probability JMP exercise. • p values and randomness • Randomness is very understandable to me. • Everything was clear to me. • i understood the graphs well • The explanation of what R^2 represents. • randomness is a tool in statistics • It was all clear.

What needs more explanation? • P-value is just something I need to continue grasping. • How much calculation will we have to do and which equations will we need to know for the

test? • Still having trouble figuring out R squared, even though we teased that out more at the

beginning of last class. Will we have a jmp model to look at to help us find the numbers for the exam?

• Nothing I can think of. • Residuals • maybe more about the R squared. I understand more about it but the Se^2 sorta through me

off. • The analogy describing p value in terms of innocent and guilt makes it more confusing to me. In

simple terms does P value less than .05 mean there is a relationship? or the other way around? • nothing • Nothing. • Nothing. You did a good job with most. • i still don't understand the hw chap 8 • I don't think anything needed more explanation. • There was nothing major from last lecture that needed a lot more explanation, but it might be

nice to go back over randomness and get another example and maybe a sample problem similar to something we could see on the test.

Why did you give this grade? • i understood the majority of the lecture • We could have moved a bit more quickly. Not too much more. • Extremely clear on this topic • It was a good class. • It seemed a little disorganized. I don't feel like we've been given a good idea of what to expect

on the test or what the important concepts to know are. • it was great • Because I understood the lesson • I understood the topic more. • Felt it was a nicely prepared lesson with a nice amount of examples. • It was a very well put together and simple lecture. You used great examples and kept everything

understandable. • Because you did a great job at explaining everything again! • because the class was solid • I felt like the technology aspects are still continuing to improve, and you are doing a much better

job of explaining any questions students have about the previous material covered. • almost everything was great • It was clear and comprehensive.

How could I have improved the last class? • However, I think if you were a bit more in depth about the different formulas that we would be

a little further along in the material with less questions about them afterward. • No way • Nothing I can think of. • Not much to improve. The online lectures are going smoothly now. You are actually doing a

better job. • Keep up the good work with using examples that are understandable and going back over

problems we have at the beginning of lecture. Great job so far! • Keep it up. • impossible • ask questions more • Keep doing what you're doing. • can[t • just more examples.

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • everything • You helped clear up randomness and what it actually means. • How to draw conclusions from the graph. • P values were explained very well as was randomness. • R squared is more clear. • Everything was clear. • i understand correlation very well • The review was clear. Most of new material was clear as well. • The p-Value. • I understand that randomness is used as a tool in statistics and find that very interesting. I have

a new perspective on randomness • It was all pretty clear. • The effect of randomness and p-values

What needs more explanation? • Nothing. • Nothing, really. • nothing, another great lecture. • I did not really struggle with anything in this lecture. I felt like you did a pretty good job

explaining everything and getting us prepared for the exam. • You mentioned that p-value will be explained later. That would be it. • Nothing I can think of • i still dont understand how and why we calculate the z score • JMP. Sadly mine is being really weird wit hmy computer. • I felt everything was good. Maybe more on chapter 11, the book just says random values and

find percentage that way but that doesnt really make sense to me. • How to calculate Se^2 and Sy^2 and exactly where that data comes from. • nothing • I think it was a clear lecture

Why did you give this grade? • Good lecture. • because you did a good job with the pace of class • it was great • You have been doing a great job going at a pace that works for all and you ask a lot of good

questions but you definitely need to work on reading the chat. A lot of us ask questions or make comments that you seem to overlook because you forget to read the chat box. For instance, I was having trouble with Top Hat and was trying to tell you that but you made no response to my comment. It was not letting me submit the extra credit answers.

• I understood more about the problems i was having. • Everything was clearly explained. • Because you covered the material well • For some reason it does just seem a bit scattered to me, not really disorganized, just out of

focus. Maybe it's just the computer system that messes with me! • it was wonderful • It was a good, clear lecture. • Good class. • I didnt have questions so I think it was clear. I liked using top hat • Because I understood the topics • Some of your explanations or examples became a bit muddled together, which made it a bit

more difficult to follow. You have had better lectures with a better rhythm.

How could I have improved the last class? • Not much for that class. • No suggestions this week • You did a good job • It was good. • No way. • Just focus on the chat a little more. People raise great questions and statements that sometimes

get passed because we forget to look at the chat box. • Mo way. • impossible • Nothing. • Don't jump around with the examples. You went from finding someone guilty to movie run

times during the beginning review. It is not that bad, but that upset the tempo of the subject at hand. Also when we went into the breakout rooms, it wasn't clear what we were doing.

• no improvements needed • no suggestions • you need to look down more at the chat to see what questions we're asking • Clarity. I feel there is a lack of clarity between when the tests will be and what and when

projects are due and etc.

How was the sound quality in this last class? • Don't know was not using my speakers. • good • It was good.

• Good • very good • wonderful • the sound was fine, a little delayed • Alright, a little fuzzy for me. • I watched the recording, and there was some inconsistencies in the audio but I think it was

because I was watching it through a recording. • Good. • Sound was pretty good this time. • great • Sound quality was good. There were times when it was muddled.

October 25 Attempts 8 (Total of 8 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • everything • The way you explained R^2 made it a lot more clear to me. I finally understand where the

formula is coming from (se and sy). The whole lecture was good and clear but that was definitely the most clear

• That different types of sampling exist and they are used differently • the different types of collection samples. • all of it • Randomness if relatively clear although I do have a few questions (shown in question 2). • The review at the beginning. • The explanation of randomness and surveys.

What needs more explanation? • Honestly I left the session with about 40 minutes remaining and I haven't had a chance to listen

to the portion that I missed. • none • Some more info on the types of surverys and questions. • For the most part the lecture was very nice and clear but if there was something that needed

more explanation for me I would say it would be the Stratified Sampling and how it reduces biased opinion.

• nothing • can you give an example of a multistage method? • Could you possibly explain the difference again between a stratified sample and a systematic

sample? I'm not quite sure I see a difference. Also, in the notes you said something about if n/N is less than or equal to 10% than it meant something. Or was that just for a specific example or is that for n/N all the time?

What grade would you give the last lecture?

A 87.5% B+ 0% B 12.5% C+ 0% C 0% D 0% F 0% Unanswered 0%

Why did you give this grade? • because you did a very good job teaching the material. • From what I participated in, things were going well. • You helped clear up old confusion and made the new material very clear and understandable.

Page 56: Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Responses Stat 201... · 1 Stat 201: Introduction to Statistics Student Satisfaction Survey Responses Fall 2012 Ramón V. León After every lecture

56

• I felt the lecture could have included more information. • it was great • I understood it well • Because I understood the lesson • I understood it quite well.

How could I have improved the last class? • go through the class exercise by just polling the class. I understand the main concepts, its the

application (ie mechanics) that I have trouble with • No way • The beginning was a little hard to hear and you went kind of fast through the Stratified Sampling

notes but overall it was good. I would say just keep giving us examples that we can relate to. It makes learning Stats a lot easier.

• Thought it was just fine! • Nothing that I am aware of. • You did everything right. • Just more info. • nothing

How was the sound quality in this last class? • ver good • Good. A little muffled at first. • it was good. • great • Not that great at first but go a lot better. • Very good. Pretty loud and clear. • Good

October 30 Attempts 14 (Total of 14 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • everything • it was all great A+ • I think you did a great job of clearing up the sample frames and what exactly to look for when

dealing with samples. You did a great job making sure we understood the last lecture before jumping into the new stuff.

• Experiment types. • the whole lecture was clear • Everything! • the different types of variables when testing data. • The difference between the Observational study and the Experimental Study. • The distinction between observational and experimental. • In experimental studies, the golden rule of the study being that there be only 1 variable

difference between the control and treatment groups. • The difference between observational studies and experimental. The difference between

retrospective and prospective studies. • Observational and retrospective. • The wording and the ways of questioning in word problems was helpful. • It was a good lecture, everything was clear.

What needs more explanation? • I don't have any questions • Nothing. • When is it okay to select people at random? Both experimental and observational? • I am pretty confident in these past two chapters but if you were going to do anything just give a

couple more examples at the beginning of lecture. Maybe review some of the questions that were on our quiz like whether or not the questions were leaning towards a bias response and if so what part of the question was the biased part.

• You skipped through the 4 principles of experimental design rather quickly, so if you could explain those a little more that would really help.

• 4 principles • I thought everthing was good • Nothing • All of the last lecture was explained clearly. • The four steps. • Blocking. • nothing

Why did you give this grade? • Everything seemed important and applicable and clearly explained. • I felt the lecture was helpful just some more examples. • You did a good job of detail. • Everything went well, it was a good lecture. • amazing lecture • Good class • Because the material was covered well. • It was a good class! • I understood the material pretty well • It was very clear and I understood everything you were talking about. The examples were very

interesting and I could relate to them because they were real. • Good lecture • Really enjoyed being there in person. Will be doing that more often. • They keep getting better and better • I thought the material was overall fairly easy to understand and was presented well.

How could I have improved the last class? • No improvement needed. • Nothing at all • N/A • None • No thoughts on any improvements • Play some classical music in the background • impossible • None. Everything was clear. I'm confused about top hat monocle a bit though. • Keep doing what you're doing. • I can't think of anything better you could have done. That was probably the best lecture so far.

Again, like always, just keep giving us good examples and making sure we understand them before moving on. Be sure to remember to look down at the chat box because sometimes you let questions slip away that people are asking.

• Take more time with more important topics. Especially those that we will be tested on. • It seemed that we could have moved on. There was a lot of explanation, while very interesting,

that may have been a little overkill on the subject.

November 1 Attempts 15 (Total of 15 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • everything • I had no problem understanding the last lecture. • The material that was clearest to me was the four principles of experimental design. I

understood clearly what each principle was and meant after you went over them. • You did well in explaining random phenomena, and all its elements including trial, outcome,

event, and sample space. • all of it • Everything was clear for me! • the difference between the law of large numbers and the (nonexistent)law of averages • i understood the graphs • Everything was explained very well. • The 4 principals of experimental design. • Everything was clear. • Law of Large numbers • The law of large numbers. • probability, clofibrate, and blinding.

What needs more explanation? • Main points of each chapter. • The 1/3 part at the end with the girls and boys was not necessarily confusing but hard to get my

head around. But I don't need more explanation, it's just interesting! • Perhaps just a bit on modeling probability. Most was clear, but a quick review would be nice. • Law of large numbers • The last thing you went over and what the importance is. • What were the four necessary items? Replication, Reproduction, and what were the other two? • Nothing at this time. • Nothing from this lecture. • If there were any, I did not catch the formulas for explaining the law of large numbers. • nothing • I felt everything was explained very good. • The lecture was fairly clear all together but what tripped me up a little was the random

phenomena. More specifically an event and the sample space. I understood the trial and outcome but got a little confused over what the other two were. Also, the big section on the Law of Large Numbers got a little confusing but overall was not bad.

• I reviewed the slides and dont have questions

A 46.667% B+ 40% B 6.667% C+ 0% C 0% D 0% F 0% Unanswered 6.667%

Why did you give this grade? • Good lecture. • You related the material to real world applications such as gambling! Very interesting lecture. • It was clear • You've had better and more focused lectures. • good lecture • The lecture as a whole was very clear. It ran smoothly and you seemed to get everything across

that you were wanting to. • Almost everything was clear • it was an average class • Overall good lecture. • Everything was explained very well. • it was amazing • Because everything is very clear. Especially being in the class...helps so so much! Also I enjoyed

the stories. • Overall I feel like I understand the material well and everything seems fairly clear. • Good sound, good information.

How could I have improved the last class? • Just stick to one or two examples. Sometimes I get lost in some of the statistical stories, and it

throws off my rhythm in your teaching. • ask more questions • None. • It was good, no improvement needed. • impossible • nothing that I can think of. • Just be more conscious of the chat space and keep asking questions and giving examples. The

class was a little longer than usual but that was okay. • Maybe show a little more why each topic is important • Nothing really. • keep doing what you're doing. • no suggestions • Clearer on the main points. • Go over a few test scenarios.

November 6 Attempts 11 (Total of 11 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • All of it • The addition and compliment rule are very clear to me. • Everything was explained very well. • the difference between personal and formal probability • Modeling probability and compliment rule • I felt the beginning of the lecture, the review, helped a lot. • The rules of probability were all clear up until the multiplication rule. • It all made sense. • I understood, for the most part, the difference between formal and personal probability and

why formal works best in this situation. • Addition rule • Personal probability.

What needs more explanation? • I got lost on the difference between disjoint and independence. Can you simplify an explanation

on that? • I thought everything was good. • Nothing. • I'm a bit confused on the multiplication rule. Do you think you could do another example on

Thursday? • None • Nothing. • The multiplication rule was a bit unclear to me, although the flight example made sense and

didn't see the association between it and the first example that you gave. • I understood it pretty well. • I would like for you to explain the multiplication rule one more time. I was getting a little

confused when talking about P(A and B) vs P(A) P(B) and when it works, etc. Also, for the addition rule can you quickly explain what disjoint means just to clarify it. Thanks.

Why did you give this grade? • It was a good class. • Good lecture • Good class. • Only because I did not fully understand the multiplication rule. • Everything was clearly explained, just a little more time on an example of multiplication rule I

guess • I got lost at the end • It was informative and I understood most of it, but the rhythm was a bit sporadic and lost my

attention a bit. • Everything was explained properly. • Was pretty good • It was a solid lecture that got across what needed to get across in a timely manner. Your

examples were very good and I was able to follow all the way through until the multiplication rule.

• Because it was a clear lecture.

How could I have improved the last class? • maybe close you office door to cut down on background noise try to simplify some explanations

for us non-geniuses :) • Well just keep on giving good examples for us to work on. My internet went out about 3/4 of

the way through lecture so I did not get to finish it live but overall it was another good lecture. • Nothing i can think of. • more examples maybe. • Pay a little more attention to the chat window. That is where most ask questions or answer your

questions. • Nothing • Can't • Keep providing good examples. • Be more concise about the main points. • It was pretty good. No improvement was needed. • Just another example perhaps?

How was the sound quality in this last class? • Good, a bit muffled at first and then you adjusted your angle to the microphone. • Pretty good. • good not great • great • I could hear some background noise (talking) from the hallway outside your office occasionally. • very clear. • It started off not so good but definitely got better. • Good. • Good. Could be a little louder • Good (I was in class though) • Good

November 8 Attempts 11 (Total of 11 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • all of it • Pretty much everything. • The margin of error/probability proportion. • Understood class activity a and b. • Calculating probability. • I felt the review helped and how the Obama won with the results of states was kinda cool. • probabilities, multiplication rule, and independence. • to answer a question about 'at least one' use the compliment rule and determine 'none' first to

find the answer • The class activity going over the probability intervals. • the margin of error. • I thought the clearest part of lecture was when you were going over calculating probabilities.

What needs more explanation? • On the in class activity: calculating probabilities, I'm confused why we use ALL compliment and

not ONE value that is compliment since it says AT LEAST one. I would have asked during class but thought I could look it up and maybe figure it out myself, but I didn't. I should have just asked in class!

• The margin of error information. There was a lot of bouncing around and I become just a little confused.

• Honestly there was nothing that I thought was too confusing about last lecture. • I understood it. • A hat... • confidence intervals • I am still a little confused about the difference between independent, mutually exclusive and

disjoint. I could use a quick illustration or recap • nothing • The multiplication rule. • On confidence intervals for proportions I kind of lost track after margin of error. • I felt everything was good.

The whole lecture went smoothly. • The sound was not good, so it was difficult to hear and follow you. • Excellent information. • It was a good class. • The class was involved with examples. • I thought the class went very well. I feel like this is one of the easier sections we have covered. • Overall it was informative and understandable. • lecture was very entertaining with the election stats. • Because it was all good to me! • It was interesting, I liked the real life example at the very beginning

How could I have improved the last class? • no way • None. It is strange your microphone kept turning off though. • Running the illustrations needed a bit more explanation. Just a little more organization on new

topics. • continue to use real examples that pertain to current events • Good class, no improvement needed. • Just keep doing what you are doing. • maybe work a few more problems • Doing a few more in class activities may help. • No way in particular. • Nothing major at all. Just continue to do what you have been doing with your examples. You did

a lot better keeping track of the chat and questions people were asking. • nothing I can think of.

How was the sound quality in this last class? • I could hear you just fine. • A few sound outages. • good • It was OK, my audio had some troubles, but that was probably a problem on my end not yours. • I listened in person, so it was good :) • it was good. • The sound quality was good. • great • In class, so fine for me! • I had to turn up the volume on the computer speaker and on the Collaborate application to hear

you. It was the worst sound quality since the beginning of the semester. It was difficult to hear especially when you turned away from the computer.

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • everything • the reviews and the margin of error. • The clearest part of lecture was the M.E. section at the beginning. • Everything • It all made sense. • The Margin of Error • everything. • I had to miss the last lecture and could not get it to replay last night on collaborate, will try again

tonight • What a margin of error is. • Conceptually I understand this lesson. • The formula for the margin of error made sense to me. • margin of error and standard deviation • the presidential election stats were evident to me

What needs more explanation? • Main points from each chapter. • i need more help on • none • I feel like I understand the standard error along with marginal error but maybe need to look

over it again to fully understand it. • Nothing • How to find the margin of error and the last thing you talked about. • The beginning of discussing the intervals and standard deviation on the margin of error was a bit

confusing. I didn't understand how it was derived from the standard model in explaining the 95%.

• I could really use some review over certainty vs. precision. I was not 100% comfortable with that section.

• just reviews sessions • unable to answer • nothing • I understood it quite well.

That

in turn threw you off a bit as you had mentioned. • It was a good lecture but I had trouble with blackboard. The sound kept going in and out and

to do it. • Everything. • you must check certain conditions before creating a confidence interval • Assumptions are clear to me. • I understood it all quite well. • I have been ill, and was unable to attend the last lecture.

What needs more explanation? • The formula breakdown and how it works. Also just a recap of the margin of error defined using

the standard model. • A little more of the calculations. • Nothing I can think of. • I would like to see another example of finding the ME and confidence level • I was a little confused with the Z* and how to find the Z* when it deals with different

Excellent Information • Material was easy to understand • I give this grade based upon previous lectures. • Most everything was clear, but I didn't fully pick up on some of how to solve every problem. • Everything was well taught. • I see the writing pad is now working! • Everything was explained well. • it was wonderful • I really enjoyed working through these problems and feel like I am really getting this chapter.

You did a great job explaining it in this past lecture. • I was clear and no technical problems

How could I have improved the last class? Just keep continuing what you are doing.

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? everything

• The hypothesis and what it stood for. • The review at beginning was clear. Everything up until the last problem were clear. • The hypothesis testing • the information about the different p scores. • all of it • finding the ME is more clear now • Everything. • It was good lecture, it all made sense. • I am really getting the hang of M.E. and the confidence interval when the Z* given to me in a

problem. With these past few lectures, the homeworks and quizes have been a lot easier because I am understanding it better.

• The 4 basic parts to a hypothesis test.

What needs more explanation? • Nothing. • the null hypothesis is confusing to me • More on finding the confidence. Where all the values actually come from, especially if you're

trying to find different confidence levels. • The one proportion z test. • Nothing really. • I still need to understand the gap between 2,3 & 7,8 in the probability example. What does that

gap account for? And also devising the model. • Not necessarily more explanation but maybe just a few more examples of confidence interval

when the Z* is not given. It still gave me a hard time when I had to try and find it myself. After last lecture though I am definitely getting the hang of it though. Overall there really isn't anything that needs more explanation, so far.

• nothing • I got confused when it came to the p-value and using it in the hypothesis.

You made the lecture fun and easy to work with. • Everything was clear. • I felt lost a bit • I was not in class so I cannot quite say, but have looked at the notes and will view the lesson. • It was a very good class, but it could have been a bit better. I enjoyed the annotation, but the

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • The video was great. • Good explanation of the hypothesis and p value. • I feel a little lost actually • The material you covered in the first part of the lecture to me was clear. I was able to attend the

first part of lecture, but I was not able to stay. I planned to watch it in the recording, and I cannot get the recording to play. I don't know if maybe it is the application and my computer not getting along, but it will not play for me.

• The reason for the hypothesis test. • All of it • You did a great job at explaining the null hypothesis again. • I understood the lecture pretty well • When the data was entered in JMP I got a better picture of what it all meant. • I understand greater and less than the hypothesis and parameter. • all is clear

What needs more explanation? • I am going to re-watch the last few lectures and read more this weekend and hope that I can

grasp the null hypothesis • N/A • Nothing. • Where the .83 and .167 came from in the Hypoth Prob when entered in JMP • You've got it down. • Because I was unable to attend or watch the last part of the lecture, it needs more explanation. • How can the parameter and the hypothesis be two sided? • Sometimes i get lost just on how to use the p values • What are the graphs significance from the 15th slide • Seemed the whole class was revue of last week.

to the content. • I was having trouble hearing although it may have just been my comp. • you did a great job. • What I was able to attend and watch was delivered well. • I felt it was good but somethings could have been explained better. • Because you did a solid job • Everything was pretty clear, but I wish we could have gotten to some of the other questions too.

How could I have improved the last class? • Just examples and review a lot with good explanation. • Keep doing what you're doing. • i don't think it needed improvement. • not sure that you can avoid the technical problems, they are going to happen occasionally so its

understandable • None! • N/A • More information on the next lessons. • Can't • Ask more questions during class

How was the sound quality in this last class?

• fair • Excellent. • good • it was good. • The sound quality was fine • great! • great • Alright. • Good. • The sound quality was excellent. • Good

November 29 Attempts 14 (Total of 14 attempts for this assessment)

What was the clearest to you in the last lecture? • the jmp • How to determine what the outputs were telling us. • I understood everything • the t-test • Null hypothesis and p-values • Feel like I'm finally understanding p-value. Hooray! • Probability rate • I really enjoyed working with the hypothesis and null hypothesis. • I thought that using P hat to find the null an alternative hypotheses review to be very helpful. • The last part discussing the Cubans and Southerners made sense. • It was a good lecture, I wasn't left with any questions. • The review and the hypothesis. • Overall good.

What needs more explanation? • Nothing really from the last lecture needs more explanation. • Nothing for me this time, I appreciate all the examples you used today. • Are the t-test and a two sided hypothesis the same thing? • I just wondered if a study guide would be available. It would be of good help. • N/A • I think you did a great job over the duration of the class • Nothing I can think of. • In the next lecture please do an general re-cap of all the material we will be tested on. • Alternative hypothesis • nothing • I think it would help in this last lecture if we reviewed some material that maybe similar to that

on the test. • A bit more relating to the specifics of what each of the JMP outputs mean in relation to what we

are trying to determine from the data. • I can't think of anything.

Why did you give this grade? Good lecture.

• I thought that the lecture was great. Very informative and helpful. Working with the Jmp program at the beginning helped me out a lot. You got across everything that you needed to.

• Good lecture we just covered a lot of the same material so not a lot of new stuff was learned. • best class of the year • Good class, good sound, good Georgia/New York joke. • it was entertaining, i like it when you stop 5 minutes early and ask for questions • Great class • It was a good class, but some tempo disturbances. Some of the examples had some hiccups that

lost my attention a bit. • GOod class. Good explanations. • Because it was a good lecture. • It was explained well. • The material was hard to follow.

How could I have improved the last class? • N/A • No way. • Just keep doing what you are doing. Asking questions and giving examples. I look forward to the

last lecture of the year. Keep up the great work. • Nothing I can think of. • None. • Maybe have pre prepared jump models so that we can spend more time going over them

instead of pulling them up. • Stick to your guns and have a data set ready to explain. While I enjoy the extra knowledge, it is

difficult to grasp concepts with subject data goes off on a tangent. • Spend time explaining how you got your numbers and how you did your math. • Just keep reviewing. • just keep asking questions • no suggestions • It was great no improvement needed.

How was the sound quality in this last class? • I could hear you just fine. • good • very good • Great! • it was good. • the quality was ideal • good. • Good. • Good! Sound cut out a bit for a minute but it was all very loud and clear otherwise. • It was pretty bad at first. I couldn't hear you for a while but then it came on and it was fine.

Why did you answer the way you did in the prior two questions? • i like the online chat, it feels more less formal and i can speak up to the teacher. • Because either way, I think I will struggle in this class just because I have problems grasping all of

this material. I am not very statistically minded, so it takes a lot of effort for me to understand this. Therefore, either in a classroom setting or online delivery I still believe I will learn about the same.

• I feel like there are less tech. issues with a classroom lecture. Even when there are issues, the class can still proceed effectively. These issues are not usually the fault of the instructor in either case, but they are more common and prevalent in an online course.

• I am comfortable in either situation. I enjoy the convenience of online classes, while enjoying the interactivity of the classroom experience. Each has a benefit in the world today.

• I personally do better in a classroom setting I feel but I enjoy trying out this new experience and way of learning!

• i just dont have a preference. i will study for this class either way • Because I don't think there's currently a more effective method of teaching than person to

person in a physical classroom. • I enjoy the flexibility of online. I can watch the lecture at my leisure. • The Blackboard Collaborate doesn't work well, but the notes are good and the explinations

make sense, so I think I will do about the same as I would in a classroom. • I'm indifferent.. learning is learning whether being taught by a professor online versus in a

classroom.

• I think I will be able to better answer this upon completion of the course, so I am somewhat undecided at this point. I REALLY like having access to the power point slides from the lecture and the ability to re-play the lecture. This is super helpful to review the information as many times as I need and at my convenience. I LOVE not having to take notes the entire time. It allows me to really listen instead of writing during class.

• Just being honest. • I don't have a preference. Online/in-house either option is fine. Success just depends on the

Proffs ability to clearly communicate the funamentals. • Both styles of learning seem the same to me. • I believe that having an online class allows students to learn better because they can be where it

makes them most comfortable to learn. Also, we can go back and look at your lectures to help study for tests and homework.

• I believe the online method is the future of education. It reduces some of the overhead. It just needs to be a bit more organized and regimented. I have educated myself through some free websites like Udacity and Khan Academy. Both have been very beneficial and I will utilize them both for some concepts covered in this class.

What do you suggest that I do to improve your learning experience? • If we could get the technical malfunctions down, that would be great. Also, maybe going a little

slower and into more depth on your explanation on how to do certain processes would be beneficial.

• more progress checks • you need to be able to chat with the students • I can't think of anything. I am enjoying the course, despite the technology problems. I think this

is the first math class I have taken in my life (had algebra, calculus in college already) that is actually useful! I am excited to use JMP because there has already been an instance at my job where it would have been helpful to plot the data I collected to show a visual picture.

• Talk more about what to expect on quizzes, HW, and tests. • Just the program which is giving you such a hard time. • You are doing a great job right now. The difficulty with online classes are situations like mine

where I was having trouble getting the recording to work. The volume was not working for your lecture and the screen would go dark every so often. This would be the first case where I would say the sound quality for the lecture was not very good but that is probably because it is a recording. That is really the only down side so far. Thanks!

• So far so good. • Disregard people who complain about the class going over a few moments. If they have other

obligations for their time, they can opt to leave at the scheduled time. • Have a few recorded sessions to view in advance to become familiar with concepts. Granted the

Pearson Master Lab had a bit of that. Just a more solid schedule for material being covered each class session.

• Less distractions. • Talk slower and more concisely. • Other than the technology working correctly, everything is fine. • I say add more examples during the class time for certain problems, i feel like that would help a

lot. • Perhaps better explanation of how to access the book in the syllabus.
