Startupbootcamp Impact Report2018 Highlights

Page 2: Startupbootcamp Impact Report

In 2010 Startupbootcamp was founded with a simple goal in mind: to support the world’s best innovators through all stages of their growth.

We have spent years fine-tuning our approach by supporting 700+ companies and over 200 corporate partners, testing new models to make innovation accessible to all and launching over thirty offices. We have gained an unparalleled view of the innovation landscape and have been lucky to have a front-row seat as innovation has truly gone global.

There Has Never Been a Better Time for Innovation

A Look At Our Innovation Programs Applications

We organised 310 events in 2018 and visited 150 Cities in 74 Countries

We saw a dramatic increase in the number of events we produced in North and South America, as well as Africa. With the opening of three new programs in MENA this year, we expect to see quite a surge in applications, and an increase of events in the region in 2019.

This year we have visited a lot of African countries with over 15 events run across the continent.

In 2018 we attended over 30 international events from CES in Las Vegas to VivaTechnology in Paris where over 20 Startupbootcamp family members, programs and managing directors attended the conference to meet startups and share their views on opportunities and challenges of creating innovation in the ecosystem.

Our Programs are Getting More Competitive

We have received 4,200 applications (+15% since 2017) from 92 countries - 150 teams were selected to join our programs

For almost a decade Startupbootcamp has been establishing its position as a leader in innovation. For the first time Direct Traffic outranks events; this shows that we have successfully built top of mind impressions and more startup founders are familiar with the brand.

Social Media and Referrals (~33%) remain our top channels for connecting with startups and driving applications. Our events are a great way for founders to form a relationship with our staff, build valuable connections, and increase their chance of being accepted into our programs. Applicants who attend FastTrack or Office Hour events are 2.5x more likely to get into one of our programs.

20% The Of Total Number Of Applications Received In 2018 Came From African-Based Startups

In the last seven years, the United States has been the leader with the highest number of funding applications submitted, followed by India, United Kingdom, Nigeria, South Africa, Italy and Mexico. Since the launch of Startupbootcamp CapeTown in 2017, African-based candidates count as 20% of the total number of applications received in 2018.

While key European startup hubs such as Berlin, Amsterdam, and

London continue to attract international talent, the aspiration

to “go global” is also highly present among companies operating

in developed countries. In 2018, 50% of the UK based applicants

targeted one of our foreign programs.

Higher Demand From Emerging Markets And Later Stage Startups

For the first time in 2016 more later stage startups applied to one of our programs than in previous years. Two years ago majority of applications had functional prototypes. In 2018, 50% of them joined our programs with live products, while 30% of them were generating revenue. We have also seen an ever-growing demand from emerging markets such as Africa and Mexico.

While we may have become the world’s largest network of industry-focused innovation programs, this did not stop us from keep innovating and solving more problems for both our alumni companies and corporate partners.

Three out of five FinTech startups were established between 2014 and 2016 which means they are now past their infancy stage and look to scale and expand into other markets. We know that getting a startup off the ground is no easy task and scaling companies into the larger industries has also proven to be a difficult task, which is why we created Startupbootcamp Scale.

Page 10: Startupbootcamp Impact Report

Startupbootcamp Accelerators follow a theme-based approach to tackle industry problems, allowing for deeper insights into specific sectors. For three months, the selected startups collaborate with 400+ mentors, partners, and investors to scale their industry-changing technology businesses.

Startupbootcamp Scale programs focus primarily on established players who are ready for commercial engagement with growth stage companies. The program takes over long weekends spread out over a period of six months, with regular touch points with our team. Unlike the accelerator program, teams will be required to come in for certain mandatory events, rather than be stationed at SBC full time.

Increasingly new incumbents and established players see each other as potential partners – and less as competitors – as more startups are developing solutions at the core of the industry that can help corporations cut costs and develop new service offerings.

However, mature FinTech and InsurTech markets like New York and London, are experiencing accelerator fatigue with multiple accelerators per market, and therefore require a new engagement model. Established players have moved on from “just” wanting to meet and greet early stage startups. The focus is now on creating real projects together, and this requires growth stage companies with proven technology and business models capable of implementing solutions at scale across large organisations.

Introducing SBC Colab, An Innovation Program For Mature Markets To Solve Real Business Problems

Page 16: Startupbootcamp Impact Report

Corporates Need Startups And Startups Need Corporates. That’s The Premise Behind SBC Colab

Created in 2017, SBC Colab is designed to equip corporates in mature markets with the capability to innovate following a theme-based approach. Together with partners, we define the theme for each cycle based on specific industry problems and opportunities to be addressed.

“There are a couple of benefits from my perspective. One is access to people who we may not have come across ordinarily through using the network that [Colab has] access to, and secondly it’s really condensing the time and effort. Historically these processes can take my colleagues and I months to get through whereas with Colab we’ve condensed it into an intense 2-3 week process.”

2018 has seen the strongest IPO activity since 2014; By the end of September, 173 U.S. IPOs had raised just over $45 billion, according to data from PwC. That’s almost a 50% increase compared to the same period in 2017.

This trend is also reflected in the performance of our alumni companies. To date, we have been accelerating over 700 companies and they are always making us proud, raising more funding and collaborating with our corporate partners. This year Startupbootcamp was ranked by Forbes among the top 10 accelerators with 27 exits and four ICOs - WePower ($40 million), SafeGuard ($12 million), TenX ($80m), PolicyPal ($20m).

We expect more exits to occur within the next three years and we will invest in providing serious hands-on value to the best companies in our portfolio as they scale globally.

2018 A Record-Breaking Year For IPOs And ICOs

Page 28: Startupbootcamp Impact Report

One of our aims has always been to support gender- and ethnically diverse teams at any stages in their growth to go from ideation to startup to growth and scaling. In 2018, 30% of the teams who have gone through our programs were led by a female founder - a 7% increase than in 2017. At the end of the day, we want to invest in people, not just in their businesses. In the upcoming years, we are committed to supporting even more under-represented founders who want to make a difference in their community.

Together with OneTech, a new programme launched by Capital Enterprise and JP Morgan Chase Foundation, we have started reviewing and improving our processes to target different communities to increase the diversity of the companies we work with.

Supercharging Our Diversity Targets

Page 29: Startupbootcamp Impact Report

We believe that it has never been easier to use digital technology to tackle some of the world’s toughest social and environmental challenges. While some are still considering the challenges and barriers, new startups are thinking ‘solutions’ to the benefit of millions of people.

This year we partnered for the first time with SAP to tackle one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals - Clean Water and Sanitation. We enter the new year by presenting the outcomes of this collaboration at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

We are also thrilled to announce that in 2019 we will be running our first innovation program focused on financial inclusion in Cairo, Egypt. 67% of the Egypt population do not have a bank account while family and friends remain the key source of borrowing money with only 9% of the population relying on financial institutions.

With Startupbootcamp FinTech Cairo we aim to make financial services accessible at affordable costs to all individuals and businesses and to boost the ecosystem in the region.

Embracing “Tech for Good”

Page 30: Startupbootcamp Impact Report

2018 was a truly exciting year, but none of this would have been possible without the startup founders, our corporate partners, and the global support received by Amazon Web Services (AWS), Cisco and HubSpot.

We would like to thank our experts, mentors, and hardworking Startupbootcamp members for making everything possible.

Happy Christmas from the Startupbootcamp family!
