PURPOSE
The purpose of this materials pack is to assist ambassadors to deliver a learning session to staff, who
work with children and young people and their families, on how to use the Starting a Conversation
Wellbeing Model.
CONTEXT
The Starting a Conversation Model was tested across East Ayrshire with a number of practitioners
during May 2014 – August 2014. The evaluation findings reported that the Model is a very effective
tool that facilitates high levels of service user participation and engagement. The Model’s key
strength is the wellbeing web which enables a reflective practice approach between the service
user and practitioner. It also provides a way to visually chart feelings and behaviors using the
SHANARRI wellbeing GIRFEC national outcomes that can be easily translated into personally owned
SMART service user outcome goals. In October, The Officer Locality Group endorsed the
evaluation report recommendations and the Model will be implemented across individual
partnership service sectors during 2015 and this Pack will facilitate rollout.
The framework model can be used to inform assessment and review processes for example; The
Integrated Assessment Framework and Self Directed Support My Life My Plan. As such the Model
complements and supports assessment and review paperwork to enable a two way reflective
practice approach. By shifting the practitioner away from being the “fixer” of problems through
open and honest dialogue and “actively listening with an open mind to the person’s story”. This
empowers service users to have a voice and take responsibility for important and often vital
aspects of their life. If used appropriately the service user builds on their strengths rather than
focusing on their problems and taking ownership by being directly involved in the development of
their own personal care plan.
Furthermore it is a legal duty to demonstrate to external inspection bodies for example as part of
the case work audits, that service users are truly empowered to take control of their own life
outcome goals. The information gathered through the Starting a Conversation Tool will be
recorded within the service user’s file/record. This provides the evidence to meet the inspection
“excellence” outcome framework requirements.
AMBASSADORS
As an Ambassador, the key aim is to increase peoples understanding and knowledge through the
use of the Starting a Conversation tool and accompanying materials.
It offers a prescriptive learning structure, aimed at supporting service providers (including public
voluntary and private organisations) to embed an outcomes focused approach as part of day to
day work with service users (children, families and their carers).
Ambassadors might, however, wish to modify selections of the materials contained in the pack to
suit their own organisational requirements for example service providers may use different reflective
practice approaches. The training can also be delivered by two ambassadors. The material
requires participants to explore their own practice and this trainer combination will help to reduce
professional defensiveness. The course is intended to promote effective joint working and having a
shared training approach demonstrates this in practice.

Mapping outcomes for children and adults: GIRFEC and SDS As Talking Points has developed, local partnerships have identified links with parallel work on outcomes for children and families. Although not a precise science, it is possible to identify links between Talking Points outcomes and SHANARRI/My World Triangle as follows:

Any learning sessions that you intend to deliver will formulate a long term
multiagency programme of training events. It is crucial from the outset that the
frequency, duration of the training and the range of topics are recorded from
start to end. This will assist in identifying any additional resource supports that you
may require.
