Courses

Basic Electricity and Electronics – 180 Hours

• This module introduces the student to the fundamental laws and theories associated with

A/C and D/C circuits, such as calculating electron flow, Ohm's law, voltage drop,

resistance etc. in both series and parallel circuits. The module also exposes the student to

the design construction, diagnosing, and testing of various electrical/electronic

components in both linear and non-linear circuit applications. The module also exposes

the student to the various types of diagnostic equipment, as well as the safe handling of

test equipment when testing electrical/electronic components in both analog and digital

appliances.

Gas Technician 3 – 180 Hours

• This course is designed to train students to work in entry-level positions with the use of

natural gas and to become a certified professional who performs a variety of tasks,

including installation, service, and maintenance of various types of equipment that

operate on gaseous fuels, fuel oil, and compressed gas, as set out in Ontario Regulation

215/01: Fuel Industry Certificates and all associated regulations. This program covers

G.3 modules 1 to 9 and the applicable codes, acts and regulations. Students will take part

in both theoretical and practical studies, to provide them with the full knowledge of the

skills, safety procedures and theories they will require as Gas Technician 3 licenseholders.

Customer Relations – 33 hours

• This course introduces the student to the principles and practices associated with

customer service and professionalism. Students will learn through the use of case studies

the importance of maintaining excellent customer service practices when dealing with

customers within the appliance service industry. Students will also learn the importance

of maintaining a high level of professionalism when advising customers of the best

options when servicing and/or installing their appliances.

Domestic Appliance Servicing & Repair – 266 Hours

• This course introduces the student to the installation, design, operation, diagnosis, and

repair of various types of appliances such as dishwashers, electric/gas stoves/ranges/wall

ovens, etc. Students will also learn to use specialized tools and test equipment, with

emphasis on safe handling and proper testing techniques/procedures. Students will also

learn by analyzing various types of service/tech manuals, schematic drawings, and how

to install, replace, and repair various components within today’s complex appliances.

Students will also be exposed to all federal and provincial codes, as well as various

classes emphasizing customer service and professionalism.

Domestic Refrigeration & Air Conditioning – 160 Hours

• This module introduces the student to the theory, installation, and design, operation,

troubleshooting, and repair of closed/sealed refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

Students will learn to test and repair various components, such as hermetic compressors,

condensers, capillary tubes, expansion valves, driers, receivers/accumulators,

evaporators, thermostats, defrost timers, etc. Students will also learn the safe handling of

refrigerants, as well as proper soldering/brazing techniques. Students will also learn the

proper use of a leak tester, manifold gauge, vacuum pump, etc. Students will also learn

proper methods of changing and evacuating systems, as well as other specialized testing/

safety equipment.

In-Field Experience (Practicum) – 480 Hours

• This module allows the students to test their knowledge, as well as gain valuable work

experience by being placed in an appliance servicing company as an apprentice/entry

level appliance technician. The student will have the opportunity to go on service calls as

well as assist in the installation, troubleshooting and repair of various types of domestic

appliances under the supervision of senior appliance technicians. This gives the student

the opportunity to work on not only the newest, but also older appliance technologies.

Textbooks & Technology

Each student will be provided with a tablet computer. Each tablet will come with all the

necessary textbooks and materials for learning. All relevant Ontario codebooks and modules

will also be included. The tablet computer will be used in class and in the workshop as a tool

for searching and learning diagrams and schematics of appliances which the students will be

working on. The instructor may ask the students to complete assignments using tools on the

tablet.

Tools & Materials

Each student will be provided with one (1) set of uniform shirt and pants. The students will be

required to wear the College’s uniform during the interim of the In-Field Experience

Practicum in order to be easily identified in the various job sites of their employers.

Each student will be provided a toolbox with a set of the most common tools an Appliance

Service Technician will need on the job. This will ensure that students will always be

prepared on the job and will create a successful student!

Job Search:
