STARS - Surveillance Integrating data across the Australian Laboratory Network.
Background
• Seven independent state Animal Health systems
• Commonwealth with overall international and trade role
• Four disparate LIMS platforms, eight if versions count…
• Communication between systems limited, manual
CSIRO
CSIRO
The Problem
• Long standing need to improve linkages between AAHL and state labs for animal health data management
• SCAHLS has been discussing for over a decade
• Some attempts to standardise LIMS – did not succeed
• Electronic interchange between different systems has been considered since the beginning
• Interchange project started by AAHL on behalf of SCAHLS
CSIRO
So: STARS
• STARS? - Sample Tracking And Reporting System
• Ability to electronically lodge submissions to AAHL
• Ability to receive results electronically
• Ability to track status of case
• Need to respect client confidentially / notification requirements, vary with jurisdiction
• Major concerns over aggregation of data

STARS Phase II
Phase II - Development • STARS web service
- Web service and message broker implemented • STARS software
- Windows console application - User profile, service and backup maintenance - Field and pick list maintenance
- Windows service (STARS engine) - Sending web method - Receiving web method
• STARS schema - Versioned schema implemented
CSIRO
Data Model
• STARS engine provides translation to common data structure
• This also means a single data interface across all nodes
• Metadata standards extends interoperability • Data services: unique identifiers
• Integrating with medical ontologies

STARS engine provides translation to common data structure
This also means a single data interface across all nodes
Metadata standards extends interoperability
• Integrating with medical ontologies
• Also developing linkages with Atlas of Living Australia
