And in a city where discussions and arguments around public art installations

have been known to trend on social media, it’s obvious Vancouverites are

passionate when it comes to what they think should represent this city.

One iconic art attraction that some believe symbolizes culture in this city is

the Vancouver Art Gallery, first built in 1931 on Georgia Street. In 1983 the

gallery moved to its home in a former courthouse building located at the

corner of Hornby and West Georgia streets, where it has since become an

important part of the fabric that makes up this city’s downtown core. The

fact the gallery keeps its exhibits fresh while honouring the classics, such as

B.C. artist Emily Carr, is just one of the reasons the popular attraction was

named Best Art Gallery/Studio in the Vancouver Courier Stars of Vancouver

Readers’ Choice Awards.

But not all culture is found between the walls of an art gallery or studio.

Demonstrating what a vibrant and diverse arts and culture scene this

city enjoys, readers also voted everything from the Best Live Music Venue

(Commodore Ballroom) and Best Street Festival (Car Free Day) to Best

Dance Company (Arts Umbrella). Some of Vancouver’s best

bloggers were also recognized including Jessica Luxe

for her self-titled style blog.

But besides bands of bloggers flocking to

trendy eateries, this city has a rich tradition of

attracting some of the best chefs in the world.

It’s also home to long-established eateries

offering everything from fine dining to blue

plate specials.

Surrounded by a bounty of fresh and local

produce, seafood, organically raised meat and

poultry, this sea-to-sky city is famous for an

innovative and fusion-inspired culinary scene.

And according to the Vancouver Courier’s

Readers’ Choice Awards, it’s also obvious

Vancouverites have their faves when it

comes to eating out and shopping for food,

including Benton Brothers Fine Cheese in

Kerrisdale, which placed first in the cheese and

charcuterie/deli category.

Vancouver is also lucky enough to be home

to an ever-growing street food scene and

readers weighed in naming popular Japadog

best food cart. Turns out White Spot is still a

welcoming haven for parents because it was

named number one child-friendly restaurant

in the city. Even Courier readers with food

restrictions participated in Stars of Vancouver

2014, voting the Naam on West Fourth Avenue

best gluten-free eatery.

When it comes to fine dining, Bishop’s, a

classic Vancouver restaurant, won top award.

Vancouver’s growing microbrewery scene was

also acknowledged by Courier readers who

gave the thumbs up to Brassneck

Brewery on Main Street as the

best place for a brew.


To call the City of Vancouvera “foodie” town would be anunderstatement.

So it should come as no surprise three retailers as diverse as these are

amongst the winners in the Style and Home category of the Stars of

Vancouver Readers’ Choice Awards.

The voting also demonstrates when it comes to

style and décor Vancouver shoppers are a loyal

bunch, naming long-established businesses, such

as Mountain Equipment Co-op, David Hunter

Garden Centres, Kerrisdale Lumber and the

Granville Island Toy Company, to the top of

this year’s list of finalists.

And while this city’s pet stores sell the basics,

such as food and beds, when it comes to style

Vancouver has some of the best-dressed

pooches imaginable. Chain-store Bosley’s by

Pet Value proved top dog in this category.

This city’s community centres helped contribute to that ranking by ensuring

affordable access for all to fitness and lifestyle programs. Courier readers

took note of their importance to this city’s residents by voting Kerrisdale

Community Centre number one in the Stars of Vancouver Readers’

Choice Awards in the Lifestyle and Services category. Also helping to keep

Vancouver residents moving is Bikes For All, named first in the Best Bike

Shop category.

When it comes to continuing education, the University of B.C. ranked first in

its class, while Courier readers chose Crofton House as best private school

and Extra Steps as best pre-school in the city.

Seniors are also well represented when it comes to services in Vancouver,

including Driving Miss Daisy, which placed first in the seniors care support

category. Mom and pop shops also proved popular, with Tony’s Shoe Repair

taking yet another first in that category.
