STAROOT JOURNAL VISITED A BEAUTY CONTEST HELD AT THUTO LESEDI HIGH SCHOOL
On the 11th of September, The Siphosethu Hall was packed with happy school pupils who were gathered to see their favourite school and classmate compete against eachother. Who ever said models were all about beauty and no brains was not refer-ring to the pupils of Thuto Lesedi High School…The event was graced by former learn-ers who came to support the event. The crowd grew louder as they saw the beautiful and handsome school mates walking in to show case their talents.
I managed to get a brief interview with the former King and Queen, who are surrounded by their princesses, these are not just pretty faces but their beauty comes with a lot of sense and brains. They each explained what they
wanted to do after completing their matric and surprisingly no one out of the bunch said they wanted to pursue a career in modeling. The career options ranged from being a Lawyer to being an Engineer. Now that’s what I call the future generation. Smart, intelligent but also have time to play, these born frees are clearly on the right path.By: Khanyisile Buthelezi

By: Khanyisile ButheleziEver wished you had a person to wash your dirty shoes after a messy rainy day? What about that pair of lovely swade boots that once owned the dance floor? Or those sneakers that has been screaming for your attention, hoping for a good wash but has been tossed from place to place all because you are lazy to scrub the dirt off the poor life less souls. Look no further, Mthimkhulu Mathenjwa, 29, is no ordinary business man, but one with an extra-ordinary unique business of doing the job you hate. Based at Moagi street (one of the busiest streets in Vosloorus) the tiny garage shoe cleaner keeps on blooming like orchards in Spring We dropped by and asked him about his success story, this is what he had to say.
Q: What do you do?A: I wash shoes for people Q: What kind of shoes?A: sneakers, takkies, swade shoes, leather sneakersQ: When did you feel the need to start such a busi-ness?A: I have always loved to washed my own sneakers and take care of my shoes. Since childhood I would always sit outside and polish my shoes for hours. In 2011, I was working at a Coca-cola warehouse called Shanduka. When we were layed off. I was at home for the rest of the year. So I started sitting outside and as usual, washed and polished my shoes. A couple of my friends would come by and and compliment me on the good work I did. This came to my attention, then I asked two or three of my friends to bring their shoes and offered to wash them for a small fee.Q: How much did you charge per pair then and how much do you charge now?A: I started with R15 and just recently I raised it to R30
Q: where do you operate from?A: from home, in the garage Q: Do you have responsibilities? A: No not really. No children. I live with just my grandmother.Q: Are there any employees that you hired? A: Yes, I have two guys that are working with me, I pay them for their assistant.Q: Is your business registered?A: Yes, I registered in 2014 with the help of a friend named Zolani. Its important to register your business so that you are able to get funding assistance from other big companies and from government> Q: Would you like to expand?A: yes, I had already started by cleaning leather belts and leather bags anything that is leather I clean but only a few know a bout this. I would like more customers in that department.Q: Challenges? The weather is my biggest challenge right now. The place that I’m operating in has no necessary equipment for me to dry the shoes inside, I rely on the sun and wind for that.Q: When is your busiest season?A: SummerQ: 5 year plan?A; I would like to see the business branching out to other places either than Vosloorus. I want to own offices in different malls around Gauteng
Its not everyday you meet a person like “Mthi’ who is full of life and has a rare passion like he does. He is a normal citizen like all of us who also fell in the stats of the unemployed at some stage of he’s life. He saw a gap that needed to be filled, without complaining and blaming he’s situation on anyone. No matter how small your business might be it is important to get the necessary documentation and be compliance free as this will allow you to grow legally and effectively.
