STAROOT VACANCIES

Editor’s pick of the week:

New data from StatsSA finds that in 2014, as many as 1.5 million of the 5.1 million unemployed people were look-ing for a job for more than 5 years, up from 974,000 in 2008.The research noted that there were 5.0 million unemployed people in South Africa in Q1:2014 of which 3.3 million were long-term unemployed and 1.7 million short-term unemployed.Among those in long-term unemploy-ment in Q1: 2014, 318,000 found a job the following quarter, while among the short-term unemployed, 337,000 found work.

StatsSA noted that women suffer from a higher incidence of long – term un-employment compared with men.The results also suggest that the inci-dence of long – term unemployment is highest among black Africans, those with a matric qualification and the long – term unemployed who have had no previous work experience. The incidence of long-term unemploy-ment peaked in 2011 with 28.5% of unemployed people looking for work for more than five years, an additional 16.2% engaging in job search for three to five years and a further 23.9% look-ing for work for one to three years.

Over the period 2008–2014, the inci-dence of long-term unemployment was highest among Black Africans with as many as 61.0% – 71.0% of that group looking for work for one year or longer. The unemployment rate among the white population group – ranging between 4.1% in 2008 and 7.3% in 2014 – is the lowest of all the popula-tion groups by a large margin, the data found.

The data also reveals the substantial gender bias in the incidence of long-term unemployment. The percentage of both men and women that were unemployed for one year or longer was highest in 2011 at 64.9% and 72.4% respectively.By 2014, the percentage of unem-ployed people looking for work for one year or longer had fallen to 61.8% among men and 70.3% among women. The data showed that in both 2008 and 2014, the incidence of long-term un-employment was lowest among those with tertiary education.Over the period 2008 – 2014, there were increases for every education level, but it was among those with ter-tiary education that the increase was largest (10.7 percentage points).

In the post – recession period, since 2010 the incidence of long – term un-employment among those with work experience has been in the 54.0% to 58.0% range–up from 48.3% in 2008 before the recession occurred. For those with no prior work experi-ence the situation is substantially worse. The incidence of long-term un-employment for this group ranges from 80.0% – 83.4%, up from 74.9% in 2008, the data found.Increased povertyThe number of South Africans living in poverty has also increased since 2010, Statistics SA said.In 2010, 20 percent of South Africa’s population fell below the poverty line, statistician general Pali Lehohla said in Johannesburg, at the release of a report on poverty. This had increased to 21.5 percent in 2014

it cost an average South African R321 per month to buy food with the recom-mended energy requirements. This had increased to R355 in 2014.Five years ago, it cost an average South African R321 per month to buy food with the recommended energy require-ments. This had increased to R355 in 2014.

One of the most enduring myths about those who take the dif-ficult, uncharted path of starting their own business is that they are mainly motivated by money. The short response to anyone

who tries to uphold this crude misunderstanding is simply that there are many easier ways to make money – starting a business is not one of them.

This is according to Gugu Mjadu, general manager: marketing for Busi-ness Partners, who says that the long answer has to do with what drives and fulfils entrepreneurs, which is totally unrelated to money.

“There are many different goals that an entrepreneurs try to achieve when they risk so much and work so hard for their businesses. While entrepreneur’s sets of inspirations can differ greatly, there are broad patterns that help us understand these complex soldiers of economic growth and wealth creation.”

Mjadu explains there are three different types of entrepreneurs. “First-ly, there are the necessity driven entrepreneurs, which accounts for a larger portion of business owners in South Africa. These entrepreneurs start their businesses because they have no other choice – their survival depends on getting out there and trading.”She adds that necessity driven entrepreneurs scrape together what they can, and often start their business by copying others in often over-traded markets, where growth and progress are rare. “Driven by sur-vival, their fulfilment often has a strong family focus, and they will work hard to provide food or put their children through school so that their lives may one day be less challenging.”

On the opposite side of the spectrum is high-growth entrepreneurs. Mjadu says that these are the scarcest types of entrepreneurs, even though these individuals are the examples that most people think of when the word ‘entrepreneur’ is mentioned. “High-impact individuals’ fame has made names such as Mark Shuttleworth, Oprah Winfrey and Elon Musk synonymous with entrepreneurship.”

Reflecting on these ‘one-in-a-million’ kind of business people, Mjadu says that these entrepreneurs are often driven by imperial ambition rather that getting rich. “These high-growth entrepreneurs want to build an empire, and money is merely a means to that end. Their fulfil-ment, if indeed they are ever satisfied, lies more in building power, influ-

ence and a formidable legacy.”Even though they are rare all over the world, Mjadu believes South Af-rica still has far too few of them. “One of these individuals can do an enormous amount of good, from being a role-model and job creator to disrupting vested interests with their radical new ways of doing things.”

In the middle of the entrepreneurship spectrum, between the survival-ist entrepreneurs and the high-flyers, lies a group of business owners who are no less important for South Africa’s prosperity – the lifestyle entrepreneur.

Mjadu says that it is difficult to generalise about this group as they come from vastly different backgrounds and industries. She adds that if there is one common characteristic that they share, it is their yearning for independence. “The majority of these entrepreneurs say they have no desire to be the next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. Rather, they seek their ful-filment in financial independence and the freedom to choose their own working hours, deadlines and pace.”

She stresses that anyone who thinks this is a sort of laziness has prob-ably never run a business. “Creating and running a business success-fully takes an enormous amount of work, creativity and persistence to become financially independent, and even more to get a business to a place where you can start working flexible hours.”

The things that fulfil these entrepreneurs can differ widely, says Mjadu. “For example, smaller lifestyle entrepreneurs find fulfilment in being ex-cellent artisans, such as restaurateurs, while others find deep satisfac-tion in providing outstanding customer care. More family-focused en-trepreneurs may live for providing career paths for their children, and dream of a business that stretches over generations.”

Mjadu adds that ultimately, all types of entrepreneurs end their careers as pillars of the community, and find fulfilment in ‘giving back’ to the people who have supported their business.“This often makes retired business owners ideal mentors to new gener-ations of entrepreneurs, as they find fulfilment not only in sharing their business skills, but also in passing on their amazing spirit of generosity. As such we should encourage all experienced entrepreneurs to consid-er mentorship in a drive to increase entrepreneurship in the country,” Mjadu concludes.

WHAT DRIVES ENTREPRENEURS?
