CUSTOMER SUCCESS STORY Starcom replaces EMC and NetApp arrays with Zadara Enterprise Storage-as-a-Service (STaaS) Starcom is the UK’s leading supplier of integrated business systems for the retail, manufacturing and distribution sectors. Like many other corporate IT organizations, they were facing a refresh cycle of their storage hardware. As part of a strategic IT infrastructure review, Starcom investigated the leading enterprise storage vendors for alternative solutions to their existing legacy arrays. The goal was to break away from the 3-5 year cycle of hardware CapEx refresh and see if there was a realistic OpEx alternative. After a rigorous evaluation, Starcom selected the Zadara VPSA solution to replace their legacy EMC VNX and NetApp FAS storage arrays. The new Zadara VPSA enterprise storage-as-a- service (STaaS) solution was deployed to support their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Business Intelli- gence, e-commerce, hosting and managed services businesses. The VPSA solution supports their VMware- and Microsoft-based applications in data centers located in Europe and North America. By leveraging Zadara’s On-Premise as a Service (OPaaS) solution, Starcom gained the benefits of an OpEx, pay-as- you-go model, along with an important element of control from having the storage hardware reside inside its own data centers something the firm strongly preferred. Data protection was a criticalrequirement for the Starcom team.Managing their customer’s criticalbusiness applications requires astorage infrastructurewith thehighestlevels of enterprise-grade capabilities. With Zadara’s advanced data protec-tion features including snapshots, clones, replicationanddataencryption, theStarcomteamarecomfortablethattheir customer’s critical data is wellprotected.

To add an additional level of high-availability, Starcom has chosen todeploy Zadara’s Multi-ZoneHA featurebetweentheir data centers, whichprovides metropolitanfailover should one oftheirdatacenterssufferacatastrophicfailure.Intheunlikely event of one oftheir data centers goingcompletely offline, thearchitecture supports afailover to a secondary locationensuring that their customer’sapplications continue to runseamlessly.

Performance was another keyrequirement during the evaluationcycle. It was important not to tradeone set of features at the expense ofperformance. To ensure the highestlevels of performance, Starcom isleveraging Zadara’s endpoint iSERconnectivity option between the VPSAstorage and the compute servers. Byadding this option, Starcom hasrecognized a 33% increase in I/Os per

second (IOPS) on their VMware-basedapplications.

“We chose Zadara Storage becausethey provided the enterprise classperformance and data protectionfeatures necessary to support ourcritical applications,” said SteveDonaghue,DirectorofHostingServicesat Starcom. “By implementing theZadara iSERoption,weareseeing33%more IOPS in our VMwareenvironment. Starcomisanexampleofaworld-class corporation who recog-nized that the traditional model ofpurchasing and managing storagearrays was not meeting their require-ments. By researching the market, they found an alternative to the 3-5year purchase, manage, replace cycleof capital expense. By leveraging theZadara VPSA operating expense-basedpay as you go model, they addressedtheir scalability, reliability, perfor-mance and cost targets. Additionally, they leveraged the ZadaraOnPremiseas a Service (OPaaS) model to meettheir desire to keep their storage on-premiseandbehindtheirfirewall.
