Yes Is the Destination; No Is How-YouGet There Why One Word Is SoPowerfulYou wouldn't think one simple word with two tiny letters could have the powerto keep countless individuals and organizations from realizing their goals anddreams. But it does, day after day, year after year. What two tiny letters cando all that?

N.O. No.

For many people, the word no is a brick wall standing between themand success. We polled hundreds of business professionals about theirfears and motivations and the results were astounding:.. 51 percent said their biggest fear is that the customer will say "no"

and reject them... 38 percent said the willingness to face rejection is the No.1 quality of a great salesperson.

The impact of fear of failure and rejection upon individual and teamperformance cannot be ignored. But what if, starting today, the word nostopped stopping you? What if every time you heard the word no you

became stronger, more powerful and more resilient? And what if it turnedout that the greatest success strategy in the world was not to focus onincreasing your success at all, but to intentionally increase the number of timesyou fail?

In truth, the word no doesn't have to be debilitating. In fact, learning to intentionally hear the word nomore often can empower you to achieve a whole-new level of greatness you never dreamed possible.

Here are five ways to shift the word no from being a momentum stopper to being apowerful positive in your career and your life.

1-- Change your mental model of success and failure • Most people operate with the following mental model of success and failure:

SUCCESS ("Yes") <<<< YOU »» FAILURE ("No")

They see themselves in the middle, with success (a "yes" from the customer) on one end andfailure (a "no" from the customer) on the other. As a result, theyspend every waking moment trying to achieve success andavoiding failure. But to be successful in life, you don't get tochoose one or the other. You have to choose both'

The fact is, failure has gotten a dirty rap because mostpeople simply think of success as good and failure as bad---complete opposites of one another. But they're not. Yes and noare not opposites; they're companions-one the hero, the otherthe sidekick. But, like in the movies, the hero tends to get all

the glory, while the sidekick gets stuck tending to the hero'shorse. To achieve sustainable success, the model should look likethis:

YOU »» FAILURE ("No") »» SUCCESS ("Yes")

Top performers understand failure is not an obstacle butactually a steppingstone on the path to success. To reach yourfull potential, you must stop thinking of success and failure asbeing opposites, and instead merge them into the yin and yangthey really are --- opposite sides of the same coin that rely and

depend on one another. Rid yourself of the notion that yourchoice is success or failure because the choice is alwayssuccess and failure.

2. Intentionally increase your failure rate.If it's true that the more we fail the more we succeed (andit is), then your immediate goal should be to intentionallyincrease the number of times you fail. And with this as acore philosophy, you are moving toward success withevery action you take, regardless of the yes/no outcome.

Now, admittedly, this is somewhat counterintuitive. But

ask top performers who have achieved massive successand they will tell you it's absolutely true. Most peoplewould be shocked to count the times they hear "no" duringa typical day or week because the number would be solow. The reality is that most people do not go out of theirway to track or even increase the number of times peoplesay "no" to them. Yet, when you go out of your way toincrease the number of times you fail (the nos), the yeseswill show up in greater quantities than you ever couldhave imagine.

3. Start setting no goals. We have all been taught the traditional approach to goal-setting for

increasing sales or achieving an objective--- in other words, getting people tosay "yes" to us. But what if the way to achieve massive success was actuallythe reverse? What if the best, most guaranteed way to get what you want wasto set your goal around the number of times you hear "no" instead?

Well, it is.

Take the classic example of a salesperson with the goalof

getting two prospects to say "yes." Monday morning he makes two calls, andcloses them both. What do you think he'll do with the rest of the week? Youguessed it; he'll spend it golfing, going to movies or catching up on paperworkAnd when the week wraps up, he'll have exactly what he planned for: two sales.

Now, imagine that, rather than setting a goal for the number of yeses (in this

case, two), the same salesperson had set a goal to get 10 nos. At noon onMonday, after making two calls (and closing them both), he'd actually be behindon his no-goal. And rather than slowing down his sales activity, he'd have to pickup the pace to get his 10 nos for the week. And the result? One of the bestperformance weeks he's ever had!

4. Celebrate your failures, not just your successes. It's natural to be excited about your successes, and it's natural to want to

celebrate them, give yourself a reward, even throw a party. But if the key to success is to

intentionally increase yourfailure rate, then it makes sense to celebrate your setbacks as well.

When is the last time you rewarded yourself for failing? Probably never. Instead of mentallypunishing yourself for not succeeding, buy yourself an ice cream cone and say, "Great job! I'm one stepcloser to success!" On the surface this sounds silly, but celebrating failure is one of the best ways tostop letting no have a negative hold on your thoughts and emotions.

5. See courage as a muscle. If failure is a vehicle that can take you to success, then courage is the fuel. But it's important to

recognize that courage is a muscle. And, like any muscle, you must develop and strengthen it with lotsof exercise. As the saying goes, you either use it or lose it, and it's no different with courage.

The best way to develop your courage muscle is by looking fear in the face and taking action. Andevery time you take action, your courage muscle gets stronger. Conversely, when you don't take action

your courage muscle atrophies. And before you know it, your courage is gone.

So, in these challenging times, you have a choice: to stick with the old model and seek success whileSimultaneously avoiding opportunities to fail, or to change your mental model and willingly increasethe number of times you fail and watch your success rate soar!
