I dont stoop that low: AkshayKumar on Anita Advani

I refuse to be labelled: KalkiKoechlinKalki Koechlin is often calledalternative for her choice of movies. Probably because Irefuse to be labelled. Im notinto preconceived notions. ButI really do believe that we havesuch an opportunity to createdifferent platforms wheredifferent genres, charactersand narratives can coexist, theactor said in an interview. The Indian actor of Frenchdescent (her French parentswere hippies in Pondicherry),considers college-goers as her real audience.I think Im a product of ageneration that sees young

people being more opin ionatedthan ever before. When Igo to Bhavans College inMumbai for rehearsals, I seethe kids... theyre hard-core,more than I was as a teenager. The way they dress, some aregoth, some are grunge. Thisincreased awareness of theworld around them has openedthem to different opinions andmany points of view. They areour new audience. I take themvery seriously, said Kalki, who wants that there should bea space available for those whothink differently.

Actor Akshay Kumar says thathe will not react to his father-in-law late actor Rajesh Khannasalleged live-in partner AnitaAdvanis allegations againsthim and his family. No, I dont stoop that low.I dont talk about that, theactor says when asked aboutAdvanis allegations againsthim and the Khanna family. When asked about the counter

petition that he has ledagainst Advani in the Bombayhigh court claiming that shehad no right to claim any sharefrom Khannas properties, theactor says, You will have toask my lawyer. In her petition and interviewsto media, Advani has allegedthat after Khanna passed awayin July this year, his familymembers evicted her andthat they have forged the lateactors will.Akshay was in town to promotehis lm Khiladi 786. I come(to Delhi) every month. I havemy house here and I come andstay here quietly. I enjoy Delhiand especially this weather. If I ever want to put on weight, Icome to Delhi in this weather. Ilove Old Delhi ... it has the best

food, he says. The actor, who was recentlyshooting in Old DelhisKhari Baoli for his next lmBoss, shares that the peoplethere dont treat him like astar. They meet Akshay the

brother. Everywher e I go toshoot, people shout Akshay. Here its Akshay bhai. Imnot away from them, they arenot away from me. Its hard toshoot where we were shooting,

but the people are so wel behaved. If I told them ki s aareiss side aa jaao, I need this areato shoot, they agreed.Akki, who is now revivingthe Khiladi franchise afte12 years, says that it madehis 10-year-old son Aaravhappy. He loves it when hisfather does action. Hes a bigaction fan and he only comesfor shooting when Im doingaction.

I dont want a dictatorshipwhere only an AnuragKashyap (her lmmaker hubby) can make a lm; or only a dark lmmaker canmake one kind of lm. But for the longest time, that space for alternative storytelling didntexist in Bollywood. I think itshappening now, she added.

Does the actor consciouslytry to make herself differentor anti-Bollywood? I never concocted a plan to change theface of Indian cinema. But Iwas very adamant that I wontchange or mould myself to tin... Im only doing what I truly

    believe in, sa id Kalki.

Zoya Akhtar is all for Bollywoods

star systemFilmmaker Zoya Akhtar strongly believes inBollywoods star systemand feels it has helped theindustry build an identity inthe map of world cinema. Star system is important. If you seeworldwide, India, Hollywoodand China all these lmindustries have a star system.Others industries thatdont have stars, are dying, says Zoya.Having directed lmstarsHrithik Roshan and Abhay

Deol and her younger brother Farhan Akhtar, the 40-year-oldsays that India has survivedHollywood because we haveour language; we have our ownstyle, so our audience wouldwant to see a Shah Rukh Khanand not Tom Cruise. Our star system has made our industrygrow.Ask Zoya to de ne a lmstar, and she says: Stars pull

people a nd no matter what t helm is, they get an opening. But often stars want to cater totheir audience by doing whathas worked before. So you

cant make too many lms with

them. They want that safety andthat is the problem, she says.In this case, Aamir Khan is alittle different, says Zoya, onher experience of working withAamir in the recently-releasedlm, Talaash. She co-wrote the lm withdirector Reema Kagti, experimenting for the rsttime with the suspense genre. My challenges were to keepthe story engaging, give depthto the characters and focus ontheir emotional chord. Our audience relate to emotionalquotient. So, if you dont

    connect them emotionally,

they will not watch (a lm),she says.Zoya, the daughter of poet-lyricist Javed Akhtar and scriptwriter Honey Irani, has writtenand directed Luck By Chance(2009) and Zindagi Na MilegiDobara(2011). She says shedlike a balance of commerciallyviable, critically-acclaimedlms. I feel both are important.Commercial success isimportant. But if I make a lmand it makes money, but if theaudience says they didnt likeit, I will be disappointed. Iwant everybody to watch mylms and like it, she says.

based on the experie nces thecontestants have had in theBigg Boss house, over the lastsix seasons. Slated to go on theoors in early 2013, the lm iscurrently in its scripting stage.Globally, this formula (of converting hit shows into

    lms) has worked well. For

instance, shows like Sex & The

City have done well as lmstoo. In the Bigg Boss lm, weare going to experiment withthe horror-comedy genre, says Nitin Tej Ahuja, director,Select Media Holdings Pvt Ltd.Although the actors for the

half.An insider says, Ram hasspoken to Balaji (productionhouse) and the channel (Sony). He told Ekta that he wants toquit as he has received somegood lm offers. Finding thetime for his lms and shootingfor BALH was becoming verydif cult for him.

While news about Ramwanting to quit BALH had rstmade headlines in September, the issue was soon resolved.

But now, with more lm work coming his way, he is ndingit hard to manage his schedule.Every month, he works on theshow for 15 days, and then hededicates 15 days for his lms.And because he is in almostevery frame of BALH, itseven tougher. There have beentimes when the production unit

has had to make do with close-up shots and body doubles, ashe did not have time to shoot, says a source. However, the producers arestill trying to convince him tostay. To buy some time for him,the production house has evenintroduced a special shooting

in a serie s of letter s in the past fe w days to slap s anctionson India for following thegovernments Sports Code inthe IOA elections, which theinternational body insists isagainst the Olympic charter. The adherence to the SportsCode has been interpreted asgovernment interference inthe Olympic movement by theIOC.The suspension came just aday before the IOA elections,

which top IOA of cials saidwould go ahead as per schedule. IOA is holding the electionson the directive of the Delhihigh court which has askedthe sports body to conduct the

polls as per its own constitutionas well as the Sports Code.We are going ahead with theelections. We are yet to receiveany of cial communicationfrom the IOC. Let us get thatrst, which we will place

before IOAs AGM tomor row,IOA acting president VijayMalhotra told TOI.IOC took the decision after it snubbed IOAs bid to senda two-member delegation toexplain its position. IOAsincoming president AbheySingh Chautala termed thedecision as one-sided .IOA has sent a letter to IOCregarding sending two of cialsto discuss the issue . There wasno response from IOC. This isa one-sided decision, he told

reporters. It has been learnt that IOCmember in India, Randhir Singh, did not attend themeeting in Lausanne sincethe members of countries

which are facing sanctionsare usually asked to stay awayfrom the meeting. That the suspension waimminent was evident from thedevelopment in the run-up tothe elections. After a series ofletters asking IOA to follow theOlympic charter, the IOC gavethe rst warning of suspensionon November 23. Anotherwarning came ve days ago.Interestingly, IOCs decisionhas been welcomed bysome former and currensportspersons who feel i

presents an opport unity tocleanse the mess in IOA. Asa patriotic sportsperson, this isthe most embarrassing momentfor me, shooter Moraad AliKhan told TOI. However,

given the mess in Indian sportsin the last few years, this could

Like MS Dhoni, Cook prefersa turner

Senior Pakistan batsmanMohammad YousufsTwenty20 and ODI career appears to be over after chief selector Iqbal Qasim madeit clear that he would not beconsidered for the tour of India.Yousuf is not under consideration for the tour toIndia, Qasim told reporterswhen asked about the selection

process for the coming tour thatincludes two T20 matches andthree one-day internationals. As far as Yousuf is concernedwe are not sure about his formand tness right now and hewill not be considered for theIndian tour, the former Testspinner said.Yousuf has not played anyrst-class cricket since mid lastyear and was recently namedto lead the Lahore Lions sidein the ongoing national T20championship.But before the rst match,Yousuf pulled out of captaincyin favour of Pakistans T20captain Mohammad Hafeezand after the rst game for Lahore, has not played in thenext two matches.Sources close to the former captain said he himself sees the

writing on the wall and wouldnow try to play in some rstclass matches before the tour toSouth Africa that begins fromJanuary 22.He will now take a nal shotat a recall to the national teamfor the Tests in South Africa, one source said. That is why he is not playingin the national T20 event andwants to give the younger

    players a cha nce i n the event,he added.

Qasim said the best T20and ODI squads would beannounced for the Indian tour which was very important for the national team.We have two tough tourscoming up and we need to dowell in India as we have thegruelling tour of South Africaahead of us. De nitely we arelooking at the fast bowlingresources available to us for

both tours , the chief selector stated.

Mahendra Singh Dhoniscontinued demand for turningtracks may have raised aruckus, but the Indian skipper found resonance from the

most unlikely quarters theopposing skipper. No, Alastair Cook hasnt joined the spinsthe way campaign, but hewould rather have a turner thana turn-off.Mumbai gave us a greatchance of winning becauseit was a result wicket. On thevery at ones, its very hard toget a result. Mumbai provedwith a turning track that itgives both sides a chance towin, the England skipper said almost on the heels of his

    Indian counterpart defending

his choice of surface despitethe defeat in Mumbai. Cook, of course, exuded the con denceof a captain who had conqueredthe opposition in its own den.

You have to stick to your strengths, Dhoni haddeclared. When you come toIndia you want to play on theturning tracks. Yes, we lost agame but irrespective of theresults, we want to play onwickets that have subcontinentconditions. Thats what homeadvantage is all about, addedDhoni, brushing aside thoughtsof a rethink after the Mumbaidebacle.Dhoni, whose demand for a turner saw curator Prabir

Mukherjee see red in the runup

to the Test, said the wicketlooks good and that therewont be much help for thespinners initially.
