ABOUT MAINZ ABOUT STAR(Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource)

STAR (Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource) are a series of courses that help students move from high school to a tertiary provider, like a polytechnic. These courses run during the school holidays, normally for one week and are applied for through your high school Careers Advisor.

All the STAR Courses will be held at MAINZ Auckland Campus, 150 Victoria Street West, Auckland CBD.

AUDIOENGINEERINGCOURSE DATES:Monday 9 July - Friday 13 JulyMonday 16 July - Friday 20 July**(Alternative if first week is fully booked)

Monday 8 October - Friday 12 October

DURATION:5 days

TIME:9.30am - 4.30pm***Please note that the second week is not optional until the first week is fully booked**The end time is a calculated approximation, but may vary slightly according to the course

FEES:$235.00 per student

CORE ELEMENTS• History of recording technology• Sound perception & measurement• Mixing console operation• Hard disk recording• Studio personnel• Gain structure• Microphone placement/technique• Sound theory

PURPOSE:Students credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate and apply knowledge of sound control and enhancement processes required for a performance context.

Level 2/ Credits 4/ Version 2/ Unit No:27703Level 3/ Credits 6/ Version 2/ Unit No:28007*

This course will give students an introduction to the theory and practice of studio recording and mixing. Students will acquire the skills to operate recording equipment within operational specifications. Students will also learn the practical skills involved in operating a recording studio and recording software programme. Over the course of the five days each student will participate in the recording of other students, culminating in a collection of all the student projects completed during that week.

*This course is assessed at the Level 2 unit standard (27703). If the student has already completed a Level 2 unit standard in either Audio Engineering or Live Sound, they will be assessed at the Level 3 unit standard (28007).

PURPOSE:Students credited with this unit standard are able to select andapply a range of processes to enhance sound in a performance context.

Level 2/ Credits 4/ Version 4/ Unit No:27703Level 3/ Credits 6/ Version 3/ Unit No:28007*

This course will give students an introduction to the theory and practice of live sound mixing. Students will acquire the skills to operate the school’s sound system with confidence and within health and safety guidelines. Students will learn the practical skills involved in setting up and operating a sound system. On the final day of the programme the students will provide production for a performance by a musical group.

*This course is assessed at the Level 2 unit standard (27703). If the student has already completed a Level 2 unit standard in either Audio Engineering or Live Sound, they will be assessed at the Level 3 unit standard (28007).
