T he Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children (SFIC) is extremely proud to host its Ninth

Annual Basketball Festival at Kean University. The SFIC has assembled two outstanding days of quality high school basketball featuring the 2011 Tournament of Champion Boys Team – St. Anthony HS, and the 2011 Tournament of Champions Girls Team – Trenton Catholic Academy.

Under the direction of Bill Fitzpatrick, a Trustee of the SFIC and the Festival Director, as well as Gerard O’Connor, the Executive Director of the SFIC, the Basketball Festival has put together nine high school games with the very best talent in both New Jersey and the nation. The games are for a terrific cause: tuition assistance for inner-city children to attend outstanding schools.

The Basketball Festival would not be able to exist without the strong support of the participating schools, educators, athletic directors, coaches and players. They all recognize the worthy cause of the SFIC and are able to utilize their talents and abilities to help the SFIC. The Basketball Festival has had very loyal support in its nine years . Hall of Fame Coach Bob Hurley

has been a particularly vigilant backer of the games since its inception.

Kean University has also opened up its doors to the SFIC and provided a venue that is convenient and is one of the best arenas in the state. There will surely be a future NBA or WNBA star from among the participants of the nine games being played over the two days. And, of course, the Star-Ledger and Verizon FiOS have also been tremendous partners in the event by providing excellent exposure both in the newspaper, on-line and via FiOS television broadcasts. The Basketball Festival also has a marvelous presenting sponsor in Investors Bank.

The weekend will provide basketball fans with a look at the outstanding talent there is in the Garden State.

The first Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children (SFIC)

Basketball Festival took place on January 4, 2004 at St. Peters College’s Yanitelli Center. When legendary coaches Kevin Boyle of St. Patrick’s and Bob Hurley of St. Anthony HS were the first to accept invites, area basketball fans were very excited about a new showcase on the high school calendar. The games came about because of the vision of SFIC Trustee Bill Fitzpatrick, who felt great high school basketball could benefit Inner-City children who wanted to receive a quality, value-based education.

The initial festival came just days after Coach Hurley had notched his 800th career victory in California. A packed house at Yanitelli welcomed home the Friars and they narrowly defeated a tough Ed Wicelinski-coached CBA team in a defensive classic. St. Anthony went on to an undefeated season and a Non-Public B and TOC title, the season becoming the subject of the book, ‘The Miracle of St. Anthony – A Season with Coach Bob Hurley and Basketball’s

Most Improbable Dynasty.St. Pat’s, coming off a 2003 Tournament of Champion title, lost its first and only SFIC game to a veteran Seton Hall Prep team led by Andrew Pusar and Brandon Costner and coached by Bob Farrell. In the third game, Danny Hurley’s St. Benedict’s Prep team wowed the crowd with its above the rim game led by future NBA player J.R. Smith in an easy victory over Hudson Catholic.

The SFIC Festival has showcased many future college and professional players such as Dan Werner, Alex Galindo, Corey Fisher, Jeff Robinson, Derek Mercer, Samardo Samuels, Derrick Caracter, Lance Thomas, Mike Rosario, Tyshawn Taylor, Jio Fontan, Dominick Cheek, Jordan Theodore, Dexter Strickland, Kyrie Irving, Ronald Roberts, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Myles Mack, among many others.

Among numerous top individual performances, two stand out. In 2006, St. Anthony survived pesky CBA with a 40-37 win that ended with a missed Dan Werner 3-pointer at the final buzzer that would have sent the game into

overtime. Afterwards, Bob Hurley called Dan Werner’s 30-plus point, 10-plus rebound, multi-steal effort one of the top high school performances he has ever witnessed. Werner went on to star at the University of Florida.

In 2010 at Kean University, the Trenton Catholic/St. Patrick’s match-up resulted in a sell-out. After an even first quarter, the Duke-commit Kyrie Irving gave a remarkable performance, breaking the game open by halftime en route to a 24-point victory. For the live and TV audience, Irving’s exemplary all-around brilliance that day convinced them of the very bright future that awaits Kyrie who became New Jersey’s first-ever number one pick in last June’s NBA draft.

SFIC BOYS GAME PREVIEWS

SATURDAY 2:30 P.M. St. Anthony HS (Jersey City), which finished last year as #1 in NJ and #1 in national polls, returns a strong nucleus led by UCLA-commit 6-8 Kyle Anderson, considered one of the top

five high school players in the country. Considered a strong favorite to win this year’s TOC title, Bob Hurley’s Friars are taller than past teams with 6-6 Jerome Frink, 6-7 Jimmy Hall, 6-3 Josh Brown, 6-3 Rashad Andrews, and 6-2 transfer Tariq Carey. NJ Hoops picks St. Anthony to win another TOC title in March.

Roselle Catholic HS (Roselle) returns five starters from a 22-8 team and is #8 in the NJ Hoops pre-season ranking. Stony Brook commit 6-6 Jameel Warney and East Stroudsburg commit 6-3 Wes Cherry lead the way. Transfers 6-8 Tyler Roberson, with high D-1 offers, and 5-10 Hakeem Saintil will bolster the team. Coach Dave Boff’s team, now in the South Non-Public B division, may face St. Anthony again in the state tournament if they can get past Trenton Catholic and Gill St. Bernard.

SATURDAY 4:30 P.M. Hudson Catholic began rebuilding their program in 2009-2010 when former Bloomfield Tech coach Nick Mariniello took the reins. Iona commit 6-5 Grant

Ellis and 6-3 senior Marc Wilson combine with returning juniors 6-7 Reggie Cameron, 6-4 Rakwan Kelly, 5-11 Kavon Stewart, 5-10 Travis Flagg and St. Benedict’s transfer 6-8 Mike Young in perhaps the state’s deepest,

strongest team after St. Anthony

HS. With St. Patrick’s move to the South division, the anticipated Hudson Catholic vs. St. Anthony match in the North Non-Public B championship in March could well be the game of the year.

St. Joseph HS (Montvale), under veteran coach Mike

Doherty, has top players in 6-3 junior Terence McNair, 6-3 senior Dan McKinless, 6-4 junior Austin Hlibocki and rising prospects in 6-4 sophomore Mike Jurzynski and 6-1 sophomore Quai Jefferson. They join other Non-Public A and Bergen County all-boys schools Bergen Catholic and Don Bosco Prep in this year’s SFIC.

SATURDAY 6:30 P.M Seton Hall Prep’s (West Orange) big off-season news was that legendary coach Bob Farrell retired after 34 years and Sterling Gibbs graduated to the Univ. of Texas. However, the team should look similar with long-time assistant Kevin Williams stepping up to lead four returning starters. Hofstra commit 6-2 Dallas Anglin, 6-5 senior Stephon Moseley, 6-4 junior Spencer Weisz, 6-1 junior Zach Davis and 6-6 junior Tom Lacey, lead the Pirates. NJ Hoops picks Seton Hall Prep as pre-season #5 and to face St. Joseph Metuchen in the Non-Public A North-South final in March.

St. Joseph HS (Metuchen) comes off a 21-5 season with strong

returning players and a heralded freshman. Coach Dave Turco welcomes back pre-season All State pick Quenton DeCosey, a 6-5 Temple commit, 6-3 Danny Brix, headed to Stonehill, and other veterans. 6-9 Karl Towns, perhaps the state’s top freshman, made his season debut with 15 rebounds and 3 blocks.

SUNDAY 12:30 P.M Saint Peters Prep’s (Jersey City) Coach Mike Kelly handed the reins to assistant Todd Decker last spring, and the Marauders graduated its entire starting line-up including two four-year starters and 1000-point scorers in Kevin Walker (playing at Caldwell College) and Keith Lumpkin (Rutgers football). Coach Decker will need to mesh junior returnees 6-4 Sean Cummings and football defensive back 6-0 Tre Bell with an impressive group of four transfers in Monmouth commit 6-5 senior Tyrone O’Garro, 6-8 junior Jordan Arthur, 5-10 soph Austin White and 5-11 junior Trevis Wyche. NJ Hoops pre-season rankings lists Saint Peter’s at #15 and Don Bosco at #16.

Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey) is the only one of

six boys teams on Sunday’s slate with a returning head coach in Kevin DiVerio. While the Ironmen graduated point guard/football QB Gary Nova to Rutgers, they return Rutgers football commit and track speedster 6-1 Leonte Caroo to the backcourt. Experienced seniors 6-1 Jemal Mosley, 6-6 Dajon Todman, 6-1 Paddy Quinn, 6-0 John Landro and 5-10 Doug Dragon will provide

SUNDAY 4:00 P.M St. Patrick’s HS (Elizabeth), will have a new look this season with the move of ultra-successful coach Kevin Boyle to Montverde Academy (FL) and 4-year sensation Michael Kidd-Gilchrist to the University of Kentucky. Long-time assistant Chris Chavannes takes the reins of the Celtics and had a busy off-season period preparing a new nucleus of players led by 6-6 junior DeAndre Bembry and 6-5 soph Jared Nickens. St. Pat’s was ranked #9 pre-season by NJ Hoops while Trenton Catholic was ranked #6. Trenton Catholic, the 2009 TOC winner, returns to the SFIC under new coach Mel Weldon and a host of

D-1 commits. 6-7 Brandon Taylor, headed to Penn State, 6-5 Charles Cooke, (James Madison), and 6-3 Chazz Patterson ( Mt. St. Mary’s MD) lead a deep squad bolstered by two junior transfers, 6-8 junior AJ Sumbry and 5-8 junior George Sapp.

SUNDAY 6:00 P.M St. Benedict’s Prep (Newark) rebuilds under former St. Joseph HS Metuchen and Ridge HS coach Mark Taylor. The Grey Bees are much improved with new players led by Miami FL commit 6-2 Melvin Johnson, a stand-out from NYC’s Rice HS before it closed its doors last June. Returning 6-2 junior guard Tyler Ennis, 6-2 frosh Isiah Briscoe and transfers 6-5 Kamall Richard, 6-7 Isaiah Watkins and 6-7 Denzell Taylor add depth and athleticism. The team was off to a fast start in December including a 67-65 win over Plainfield in the Hoop Group Tip-Off Showcase.

Bergen Catholic HS (Oradell), a storied program over the decades, will be led by new coach Billy Armstrong, a former Crusader stand-out from

the 1990s. Speedy 5-9 senior point guard Charles Wingate, a gridiron star, leads returnees 6-3 junior Kyle Queiro, 6-5 junior PJ Reed and 6-6 soph Nadi Beciri. The top newcomer is 6-7 junior George Kloak.

SFIC GIRLS GAME PREVIEWS

SATURDAY 11:00 A.M. Paramus Catholic plays one of the most competitive schedules in North Jersey. The Lady Paladins are a team on the rise and starts only one senior Alisha Cornett. A talented group of underclassmen will mature as the season goes on. The Lady Paladins still return a host of underclassmen who saw many minutes last year. Key contributors include juniors Dejah Taylor and Tianna Smith, sophomores Sabrina Fincher,Ebony Gilchrist and Corinne Poitiven. Roselle Catholic is the 3-time defending Union County Tournament champions, having won last year’s final at Kean’s Harwood Arena. Junior Guards Marcia Senatus and Niavanna Grant are returning RC starters.

Senatus, Grant and fellow junior starter Danielle Franklin are tri-captains of this year’s team. Sophomores Tori Pozsonyi and Kate Tobie complete the Lions starting lineup.

SATURDAY 12:30 P.M The Academy of Holy Angels lost in the North Jersey, Non-Public A Finals last season but always has a strong team under veteran coach Sue Liddy. Holy Angels is a young rebuilding team this year. With an incredibly hard opening schedule, the team started at 1-3 with close losses to De Paul, IHA and Montclair. Melanie Lockett, a junior who was 1st team

all Bergen County last year, is averaging 17 points per game and is the go-to person on the team. They will face a young Saint Anthony HS team that started off the season with an opening loss but is coming off an appearance in the state playoffs.

SUNDAY 2:15 P.M Trenton Catholic Academy (Trenton) won the 2011 NJSIAA Tournament of Champions, and graduated Player of the Year Briona Canty to Rutgers but has a strong, experienced returning group. Last year’s girls coach Mel Weldon has taken over the boys program. New girls coach Khaliq Lewis-El’s group will be led by returning senior Marquasia “Blue” Aiken and sophomores Isis Young and Dominique Ward. Mount Saint Dominic Academy (Caldwell), coached by Jerry Aquino, also will play one of the most competitive schedules in the state. The Mount is led by seniors Hartford commit Mallory Shickora and Brittany Manna. Juniors Stefani Alston, Camille McPherson and Veronique Hut round out the starting five.

Game Match-Ups Promise Exciting Basketball!

Why support Catholic Schools?

The National Catholic Educational Association released a report (2010) indicating that:

• Students who attend Catholic high schools are more likely to graduate and attend college than those attending other schools

• Catholic high schools report a graduation rate of 99.1 percent, a higher rate than reported by other religious schools (97.7 percent), nonsectarian schools (95.7 percent) and public schools (73.2 percent)

• According to Diane Ravitch, author of NY Times bestseller, ‘The Death and Life of the Great American Schools System’:

- Catholic schools are particularly successful at serving low-income black and Hispanic students.

- They should serve as a model because they “never gave over to the obsession with standardized tests” and “never conceded their curriculum to progressive trends like whole language, constructivist math and relativistic history.”

- Catholic school students were far more likely to take rigorous classes, graduate on time and attend college.

Why Children Succeed in Catholic SchoolsCatholic schools offer the opportunity for children to experience academic achievement by meeting rigorous learning standards within a safe, orderly and structured environment where all students are expected to learn and do well.

Catholic schools set higher performance standards and have high expectations for every child.

Catholic schools emphasize basics in the curriculum while fostering a school ‘culture’ that strengthens the students’ mastery of academic subjects, makes them feel valued because they are known personally by the teachers and builds their self-esteem as they achieve their goals.
