Alex Hinkle received the championship plaque and Jesse Paxton was run- ner-up. Rhett Harper went 1-2 at the state wrestling tour- nament. McPherson County Clerk Judy Dailey reports two more filings for the upcoming May 11 Pri- mary Election. Melvin J. Suchy and Todd Ascherl have joined Karen Lick- ing and John Streiff in the race for a position on the McPherson County School Board. Bruce Shimmin, 94, of Paradise Valley, MT, passed away February 16, 2010. TWENTY YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 24, 2000 Students at McPherson County High School will be serving members of the community on April 20 as they are in the process of coordinating several projects with local senior citizens. Kirk Neal, Erin Connell, and Lacy Abel met with the seniors February 17 and shared ideas on what they thought might be done, such as raking leaves, trimming trees, cleaning flower beds, taking off storm windows and other chores. Senior citizens are invited to fill out cards and return them to Aunt Bea’s Cafe stating what they wish to have done or they may call the school and give them the information. The MCHS basketball boys completed their reg- ular season with a 59-52 win over Maywood Friday night. Scoring for the Longhorns were Eric Mumm, Wyatt Arensdorf, Joe Cochran and Dru Melvin. Will and Sue Masters’ son, John, arrived in Tryon Friday morning on his father’s birthday and spent the weekend with his parents. The three at- tended church at the Cal- vary Baptist Church in North Platte. THIRTY YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 22, 1990 The MCHS boys com- pleted their regular sea- son by defeating Maywood, 54-22. Brad Whited led Tryon with 18 points, Travis Kemp had 10, Brett Gosnell, 9, Mike Daly, 8 and Dusty Paxton 5. Geneva Neal was hon- ored on her birthday Feb- ruary 14 when the Gary Neals and Larry Camp- bells brought supper to her home that evening. Kathy Fisher welcomed a large crowd of young people to the Youth Fel- lowship Rally Sunday af- ternoon, February 18. Sympathy is extended to the family of Mary Lick- ing of Thedford. Mrs. Licking passed away at her home on Tuesday of last week. FORTY YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 21, 1980 Chet Paxton of Thedford and Louise Brehm of Lin- coln have been appointed by Governor Charles Thone to the Nebraska Hall of Fame Commis- sion. Both new members will serve for six years. Curtis Nicholson, little son of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Nicholson, entered the Great Plains Medical Center Monday morning with croup. His grand- mother, Grace Miller, is helping out at the Nichol- son home for a few days. Arthur’s Wolves pulled away in the last quarter of the boys basketball game February 13 to beat the Longhorns. Scoring for Tryon was Mike Miller, Lynn Pyzer and Sam Ha- worth. FIFTY YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 19, 1970 The home of Louis and Lawrence Hoban, who live about 15 miles south of Tryon, was destroyed by an early morning fire February 14. The broth- ers escaped the fire by lowering themselves from an upstairs window by a rope made of sheets tied together. The brothers es- caped by pickup to the Red Mann place to phone for help and an ambu- lance for Lewis who suf- fered a cracked vertebra, while escaping. The Tryon and North Platte firemen both assisted in the fire, but it was too far gone to save anything. Tom Burch was chosen to represent MCHS at Boys’ State in Lincoln next June, and Jim Schmidt was chosen as al- ternate to Boys’ State. Miss Pamela Huffman from the Nursing College at Hastings, spent the weekend with her par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Huffman and Bruce. SIXTY YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 25, 1960 The Extension Service and Soil and Water Con- servation District of Logan and McPherson counties, held their an- nual meetings together this year in the high school auditorium in Tryon, February 18. The Soil and Water Conserva- tion District awarded an aerial photo to the honor family, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Trumbull of Ring- gold. Frank Correll received word that his sister, Mrs. Ed Rudolph had started on her journey to Africa as a nurse for a three month stay. She is in Boston now. Due to the bad storm, Mr. Macomber was about the only one from the Lena community attend- ing the wedding of Miss Margaret May to Ralph Arensdorf on Valentine’s Day. Ralph was employed at the Macomber ranch before entering the serv- ice. SEVENTY YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 23, 1950 Mr. and Mrs. Vern Dob- bins visited with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Dobbins and sons of Burwell, and looked over the place where they are going to move. Their sale will be on March 7. Vic Paxton has purchased the Dob- bins ranch. The REA meeting held in Tryon Tuesday evening was attended by most all of the residents of McPherson County, and some people from adjoin- ing counties also at- tended. Many of the people who had not signed up previously to use the REA electricity, did sign up at the meet- ing, and some will sign up in the near future. School District No. 26 did not hold school this last two weeks due to the illness of their teacher, Miss Lila Pyzer who en- tered the hospital in North Platte for surgery. EIGHTY YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 22, 1940 Lucille Wells is holding a public farm sale at Ring- gold today. A nice offering of milk cows, horses and machinery is being made at this sale, being cried by H.M. Johansen of North Platte. A tardy news item is that of the marriage of Miss Dillie Lamb, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lamb, to Kenneth Schroeder of North Platte. Mr. and Mrs. Miles Sny- der and Jimmie, visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Blackstone near Curtis last week. NINETY YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 20, 1930 Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Shriver returned Tuesday from Stockville where they had been called last week owing to the death of Mrs. Shriver’s mother, Mrs. Wilson. The high school basket- ball team at Tryon took a fast game from the Nichols team on the local floor last Friday night. The final score was 14 to 9. Having decided to sell the Latter Day Saints Church, setting one-half mile east of the L.L. Mann ranch, the sale is now open for the bids. All bids must be received by the 20th of March, 1930. Larry Trumbull, 90, of North Platte, and former McPherson County resi- dent, received word in No- vember that he would receive recognition from the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association for having completed 60 years as a member. He will receive official recog- nition at the June 12 state convention. Trumbull retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1988 after a 33-year ca- Trumbull to be honored for 60-year membership reer as a rural letter car- rier. He retired as post- master at Tryon in 1988. Trumbull started in Ringgold and moved to Tryon when the post of- fice was closed in Ring- gold and routes were consolidated. Trumbull is also an Air Force veteran who served after the Korean War. He and his wife Helen, ob- served their 63rd wed- ding anniversary in December. Some of the highlights of his career included car- rying mail with a snow- mobile, airplane, and four-wheel drive in 1969, and credits his wife with helping him deliver mail on bad snow days. Trumbull was named the “1981 Driver of the Year,” and this was pre- sented to him for his record of driving 17 years without an accident. Larry Trumbull will be honored June 12 for his 60-year membership in the Rural Letter Carriers Association. He was a U.S. Postal Service employee for more than 30 years, retiring as postmaster at the Tryon office in 1988. Trumbull, 90, and his wife, Helen, have been married for 63 years.
