sustainable solutions require holistic thinking. that’s why stantec provides an integrated approach that considers the primary goals and objectives of our clients, the relationship between the built and natural environment, and the relationship between the community and its broader biophysical region. While our design process emphasizes physical systems, it also considers the aesthetic, environmental, and social impacts of a development, and how this contributes to the physical and psychological well-being at many levels. and while our business and community planning processes value traditional bottom line performance, they also integrate comprehensive ‘triple bottom line’ dimensions.

stantec is a recognized leader in sustainable design and sustainability consulting. through our stantec sustainable solutions (s3) teams we provide integrated, multidisciplinary consulting services at every scale of built, natural, and organizational environments—from building design, strategic policies, and management, to infrastructure management, community, and business planning. We are architects, engineers, planners, scientists, urban designers, project managers, and business strategists who are committed to the principles of sustainability and stewardship in every area of our practice.

the layout and design of a building has a significant impact on its overall sustainability and performance. this is particularly true of the “skin” or the envelope of a building that includes the walls, openings in walls (windows, doors, etc.), the roof, and roof openings. stantec architects and sustainability consultants work together to balance building owner needs, good architectural design principles, and sustainability through attention to detail in:• building programming and overall master

planning• building construction systems comparison• building wall construction detail options• assessment of window, door, and skylight

impacts on buildings• Roofing system analysis and comparisons• overall analysis and coordination of building

Program & Project Management

Watera total water management approach considers the complete hydrologic cycle and establishes a sustainable balance of structural and nonstructural, and both point source and non-point source factors. Recognizing the many interconnections within the watershed between water supply, conveyance, treatment, distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, and reuse is key to a “whole water” strategy. services include:• integrated water resources planning and

management• natural or passive ecological treatment systems

(wetlands and marshes)• advanced water and wastewater treatment

technologies• Waste heat recovery• stormwater management• Water conservation• Groundwater banking and conjunctive use• Water transfers• biosolids and residuals management

Wastestantec provides services for the full range of options within the solid waste management hierarchy, including the following:• integrated waste diversion and management

plans• Recycling facilities• Composting facilities• transfer stations• Landfills• Waste to energy• Recovery and remediation systems• Extended producer and stewardship

responsibility

• Stantec supports a company-wide sustainability education program, delivered through a flexible framework administered online or locally by trained and experienced staff.

• More than 60 of our offices have volunteer-driven Sustainability Committees.

• In recent years, Stantec has been named as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers, a member of the Cleantech 10, one of Canada’s 50 Most Socially Responsible Corporations, and one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers.

• Verdandix, an independent analyst research firm focused on sustainability, named Stantec as one of only six “green quadrant leaders” in sustainable engineering in the United States.

In addition to assisting our clients with meeting their sustainability goals, we are continually working to improve the environmental and social impact of our own organization. Reporting on our sustainability performance and goals furthers our commitment to transparency and accountability. Highlights include:• We released our first annual sustainability

report in 2007 and have continued this practice in accordance with the internationally accepted framework of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 Reporting Guidelines.

• In 2009, Stantec conducted its first baseline greenhouse gas emissions inventory based on 2008 data. Similar carbon footprint reporting, covering more than 80 percent of our offices, has been completed for 2009 and verified by an independent third party.

• Stantec is a founding member of the The Climate Registry (TCR) and is recognized as a transitional reporter. TCR is a North America-wide organization that sets consistent and transparent standards for calculating, verifying, and publically reporting GHGs.

• Stantec also reports to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a data collection registry project developed to accelerate solutions to climate change. In 2010, Stantec was named one of CDP’s Carbon Disclosure Leaders in Canada.

• In 2010, Stantec conducted a pilot environmental footprint review of a sample of our offices, incorporating performance related to waste, water, energy, and materials use.
