About the County

Stanislaus County is located in Central California within 90 minutes of the San Francisco Bay Area,

the Silicon Valley, Sacramento, the Sierra Nevada Mountains and California’s Central Coast. With

an estimated 545,267 people calling this area home, the community reflects a region rich in diversity

with a strong sense of community. Two of California’s major north-south transportation routes

(Interstate 5 and Highway 99) intersect the area and the County has quickly become one of the

dominant logistics center locations on the west coast.

The County is home to a vibrant arts community with the world-class Gallo Center for the Arts, a

symphony orchestra, and abundant visual and performing arts. Stanislaus County is a global center

for agribusiness, positioned by its mild Mediterranean climate, rich soils and progressive farming

practices. The area is recognized internationally for agricultural innovation with wine, almonds,

poultry, milk, cattle, and walnuts being some of the featured industries. The County is also home to

California State University Stanislaus, Modesto Junior College and benefits from satellite locations of

other high-quality educational institutions. The County was established in 1854 and has a total land

area of 1,515 square miles. Temperatures range from an average low of 43 degrees in the winter, to

an average high of 92 degrees in the summer. Temperatures move up into the high 90s during the

summer months with low humidity and cool evening breezes from the San Joaquin Delta.

Stanislaus County has a current year total budget of $1.38 billion and 4,560 full-time positions within

27 agencies and departments.

About the Department

The office of the District Attorney is responsible for the prosecution of all misdemeanor and felony

crimes that occur within the County. District Attorney staff represent the People of the State of

California in both criminal and quasi-criminal cases, provide support and assistance to crime victims,

and work in partnership with local law enforcement agencies to promote public safety. Our mission is

to SEEK JUSTICE, SERVCE JUSTICE, DO JUSTICE. The District Attorney’s Office Bureau of

Investigation, is managed by the Chief Investigator with a staff of two lieutenants and seventeen

Criminal Investigators. Investigators appointed to the Bureau of Investigations have full peace officer

powers and work under the direction of the District Attorney. It is the mission of the Bureau of

Investigation to maintain professional and effective working relationships with all law enforcement

agencies and promote efficiency and trust within our community, working together to drive down

crime, serving victims of crime and shaping the quality of life in Stanislaus County.

Ideal Candidate

The District Attorney, Bureau of Investigation unit is looking for a

confident, innovative candidate who can work independently and

collaboratively with all law enforcement agencies to drive down crime in

Stanislaus County. The Criminal Investigator job classification is a sworn

peace officer with full peace officer powers as defined in Penal Code

Section 830.1 The ideal candidate will posses 3 or more years as a

sworn peace officer with experience in criminal investigative work. The

ideal candidate will have a sound understanding of police and

investigative techniques coupled with the use of modern law

enforcement technology. The criminal investigator conducts a

considerable amount of field work and collaboration with other law

enforcement agencies. Criminal Investigators generally work a

modified 4/10 schedule to meet job demands, but are also required to

on-call duties on a rotational basis including evenings and weekends

and are subject to overtime and standby.

The ideal candidate will have experience in trail preparation and

evidence gathering which is vital in assisting Deputy District

Attorney’s in prosecuting criminal violations. The ideal candidate will

demonstrate exceptional writing skills, interpersonal and soft skills.

The ideal candidate will have experience in working special

assignments and collaborating with other local, state and federal

peace officers working together in a task force setting investigating

gang, arson, narcotic, real estate fraud and auto theft crimes.

POST CERTIFICATION PAY

Intermediate: 6.5% of base salary.

Advanced: 10.0% of base salary.

BILINGUAL PAY

An additional 2.5% of base pay will be paid to eligible certified bilingual

employees.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct criminal investigations; • Assist other law enforcement agencies as requested; • Arrest suspects; • Prepare and serve search warrants; • Locate and serve victims and witnesses subpoenas; • Provide office security ad safety; • Transport prisoners; • Attend autopsies on homicide victims; • Transport victims and witnesses, including children; • Conduct Grandy Jury and other specialized investigations; and • Travel out of state to perform investigations, including child recoveries.

Minimum Qualifications

Skills/Abilities

• Gather and analyze investigative data and perform mathematical calculations;

• Deal effectively with staff, citizens and public officials under conditions requiring integrity, initiative, resourcefulness, tact and good judgment;

• Remember names, faces and incidents and be thorough and observant;

• Possess essential mental and cognitive skills;

• Recall data and interpret and apply oral or written materials and instructions; and

• Remain alert and coherent and analyze situations accurately, think and act quickly in emergencies and adopts course of action.

Knowledge

• Law enforcement procedures and criminal investigative techniques; • Basic accounting procedures and their

application to law enforcement investigations;

• Criminal law, evidence and court

procedures; • Interview techniques and report writing

skills; and • Communication skills, proper sentence

structure and word usage. Citizenship Requirements • Pursuant to Government Code Section

1031 applicants for peace officer positions must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.

License • Applicants must possess and maintain a

valid California Driver’s License and remain free from repeated preventable accidents.

Education/Experience CRIMINAL INVESTIGATOR I • Graduation from high school or successful

passage of the General Educational Development Test (GED); AND • Two (2) years of experience in law enforcement or related criminal investigative work; AND • Active basic or higher California POST certificate is required. CRIMINAL INVESTIGATOR II • Graduation from high school or successful

passage of the General Educational Development Test (GED); AND • Three (3) years of experience in law enforcement or related criminal investigative work; AND • Active basic or higher California POST certificate is required. Proof of education and a copy of your California
