The second edition of the league’s football title game is slated for live coverage on ESPN or ESPN2 at 11 a.m. CT/Noon ET.

The inaugural Sun Belt Football Championship Game saw Appalachian State defeat Louisiana 30-19 at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C. The host Mountaineers were led by running back Darrynton Evans, who surpassed 1,000 rushing yards on the season during a belt-hoisting, Most Valuable Player-winning performance – 218 all-purpose yards that included 111 rushing yards and a 97-yard kickoff return.

The 2018 game was one of the highest-rated Sun Belt football games in conference history and was the 15th-highest rated cable program on Dec. 1, 2018 in the United States.

The Sun Belt is the final of the 10 FBS conferences to stage a football championship game. In 2018, the Sun Belt was the first FBS conference to hold an inaugural football championship game since the American Athletic Conference conducted its first title game in 2015. AROUND #SUNBELTFB

WHAT ARE THEY SAYING: WEEK 3Following Week 3 action in Sun Belt football, here is a snapshot of what people are saying across media outlets and social media:.

• On Saturday morning, the Arkansas State Red Wolves will visit Sanford Stadium at the University of Georgia, and it will be decked out in pink honoring the wife of ASU head football coach Blake Anderson who died after a long battle with breast cancer last month. The hashtag #WearPinkForWendy has spread all over social media, coming from all parts of the country. It's bringing awareness to breast cancer and how horrible of a disease it can be. – KATV (#WearPinkForWendy Brings Nationwide Awareness to Breast Cancer)

• "I just want to say publicly: one of the classiest moves I've ever seen. It's hard to truly prepare for something like that." – Associated Press (Anderson Stirred by UGA Pink Out: 'Overwhelmed')

• When University of Georgia football fans paraded into Sanford Stadium on Saturday, many had swapped out traditional red Georgia shirts for bright pink. They were staging a "pink out" of the stadium in honor of Wendy Anderson, the wife of Arkansas State coach Blake Anderson. – CNN (University of Georgia Fans Staged a 'Pink Out' for Opponent Arkansas State, Whose Coach's Wife Just Died of Cancer)

• The Chanticleers defeated Norfolk State 46-7 on Saturday at Brooks Stadium, dominating the overmatched Spartans of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, who lost by just three points to Football Bowl Subdivision member Old Dominion in their opener. – Myrtle Beach Online (How Coastal Carolina Football Kept the Momentum Going in a Big Way Against Norfolk State)

• Coastal Carolina’s smothering defense held Norfolk State to two first downs in the opening three quarters, as the Chanticleers rolled to a 46-7 victory over the visiting Spartans on Saturday afternoon. – Charlotte Observer (Coastal Carolina Defense Shuts Down Norfolk State)

• This performance, though plagued with self-inflicted setbacks, ought to provide some confidence for conference play as well as future visits to Big Ten foes Nebraska (2022) and Wisconsin (2023). – The Associated Press (Minnesota Football Scores Late to Beat Georgia Southern 35-32)

• Troy linebacker Carlton Martial had another huge game during a 47-42 loss to Southern Mississippi on Saturday. Martial recorded a career-high 16 tackles – 10 in the first half – and had 4.5 tackles for loss in the game. – Dothan Eagle (Troy Notebook: Martial Has Big Game)

• Yes, there is a positive takeaway from this contest. Running Back Tra Barnett had a great game, picking up 127 yards on 19 carries. He showed a quick burst and excellent vision behind the line of scrimmage. Barnett has 274 yards through three games, thus far, which is about half of what he had through 11 games last season. As a team, GSU had 210 rushing yards on 5.1 yards per carry. – Panther Talk on 247Sports.com (Takeaways from the Loss to Western Michigan)

• As the Ragin’ Cajuns led Texas Southern 56-6 at halftime of Saturday night’s game at Cajun Field, the two teams agreed to shorten the second-half periods to 10 minutes apiece. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser (How Do College Football Games Switch to 10-Minute Quarters?)

• There was 1:42 off the clock in the first quarter when UL scored its first touchdown Saturday night against Texas Southern. Scoring quickly — and easily — then became the theme of the game. In fact, the Ragin’ Cajuns scored so much, and so frequently, that the second half was reduced to 10-minute quarters after a mutual agreement between Cajuns coach Billy Napier and Texas Southern coach Clarence McKinney. - Lafayette Daily Advertiser (Cajuns Get Chance to Develop in Crushing Defeat of Texas Southern)

GAME PREVIEWS

TROY (1-1) AT AKRON (0-3)Saturday, September 21 • 2 p.m. • ESPN+

SERIES: Troy leads, 1-0LAST MEETING: Troy, 22-17 (2017)

NOTES: Troy and Akron are meeting for the second time with the Trojans making their first trip to play at InfoCision Stadium. The first matchup between the two programs was a thriller as Troy scored with 66 seconds remaining to cap off a 97-yard drive and steal a five-point victory. The game-clinching play was a 23-yard connection from Brandon Silvers to Deondre Douglas. The Trojans come into this matchup after senior quarterback Kaleb Barker put up a career day against Southern Miss a week ago. His 504 passing yards rank as the second-most nationally in a game this season and the fourth-most in Sun Belt history. Barker enters the week ranked second nationally averaging 393.0 passing yards per game and fourth nationally averaging 385.5 total offense yards per game. Also in the Southern Miss game, Troy had a 97-yard touchdown drive in the second quarter, marking the fifth time in the last six seasons that the Trojans had at least one drive of 97 yards or longer.

NOTES: Coastal Carolina and Massachusetts are meeting for the third time in as many seasons. The Chanticleers are headed back to Amherst, Mass., for a second-straight season to take on the Minutemen. Coastal Carolina enters the matchup with a 2-1 record for the second-straight season and the third time in the last four years. The Chanticleers have held all three opponents this season to under 300 total yards of offense. The 117 yards allowed to Norfolk State were the fewest for a Coastal Carolina defense since surrendering 146 yards at North Carolina A&T on Sept. 27, 2008. It also marked the third-lowest allowed in school history behind 93 yards by Charleston (W. Va.) in 2003 and 87 yards by Chowan in 2007. The Chants' 401 yards on the ground versus Norfolk State were the most by a Coastal offense since rushing for 410 yards in a win at Presbyterian in 2013. Junior running back CJ Marable has eclipsed the century mark on the ground in consecutive games for the first time in his career.

NOTES: Appalachian State and North Carolina are meeting for just the second time. This year's matchup opens a three-game series that concludes with the Mountaineers playing host to the Tar Heels at Kidd Brewer Stadium in 2022 and returning to Chapel Hill in 2023. Appalachian State is 2-0 for the first time since 2010. The Mountaineers' 98 combined points in wins against East Tennessee State and Charlotte represent the program’s highest two-game total to open a season since 1936. Appalachian State and North Carolina are a combined 4-1 this season with new head coaches – Eliah Drinkwitz (2-0) and Mack Brown (2-1). Brown went 6-5 as the Mountaineers' head coach in 1983. Sparky Woods, who served as Appalachian State's head coach from 1984-88, is a senior advisor to Brown at North Carolina. Junior running back Darrynton Evans leads the nation in all-purpose yards per game (209.0) and ranks second in rushing yards per game (166.5) and points per game (15.0).

NOTES: Louisiana and Ohio are meeting for the third time with the Ragin' Cajuns making a second trip to take on the Bobcats in Athens, Ohio. The two teams met in Athens in 2010 in a game that saw a total of 38 points scored in the fourth quarter. Louisiana's Brad McGuire threw for 384 yards and two touchdowns and two Ragin' Cajuns went over 100 yards receiving – Darryl Surgent (110) and Ladarius Green (107). In last week's game against Texas Southern, Louisiana broke a couple of school records, including largest margin of victory (71, 77-6) in the school's modern era of football history. The Cajuns scored on every drive, except for the last drive that ended the game. Louisiana boasts three running backs with 10 or more career rushing touchdowns – junior Elijah Mitchell (21), redshirt junior Trey Ragas (20) and senior Raymond Calais (11). All three scored multiple touchdowns in the same game against Texas Southern. The Cajuns enter the week ranked third nationally at 336.7 rushing yards per game, behind Navy (371.5) and Air Force (356.0).

The Jaguars have a 5-0 record all-time against non-league in-state opponents, although this game marks the first time that South Alabama has played another in-state school on the road outside of Sun Belt play. UAB head coach Bill Clark was the Jaguars’ first defensive coordinator, holding the position for the program’s first four seasons before becoming the head coach at Jacksonville State. UAB assistant coach Jay Simpson was a letterwinning cornerback for the Jags for the program’s first two years, racking up 56 total tackles, four interceptions and seven pass breakups, while helping the team go 17-0.
