On Wednesday August 25, 500 women converged on the tiny town between Goondiwindi and St George, where they lunched in the luxurious Toowoomba Party Hire marquee and raised more than $20,000 for breast cancer. Rabobank flew in guest speaker, Amanda Ghirardello, from Melbourne. The former Goondiwindi girl received a stand- ing ovation after telling her story of being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 25 and going on to trek the Himalayas as part of her quest to raise a million dollars for cancer research through her foundation Remission Possible. There was fierce bidding in the decorative bra art auction with the creation by Breast Cancer Patron and Channel 7 newsreader, Kay McGrath, selling for $900 to Judy Grills from Inverell. Sellina Bate from Talwood paid $1250 for the bra painting by Warwick artist Jane Donaldson. The Dirranbandi Bridge Club paid $600 for Senator Barnaby Joyce’s bra painting which featured the signa- tures of both Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott. St George fashion boutique owner, Julie Dries, bought the Rabobank bra for $1150 and Judy Bodkin from Balonne Steel and Rural Supplies bought the local patchwork group’s bra for $950. The Weengallon perpetual apron which carries the names of previous buyers was sold for $600 to sister-in-laws Karen Sullivan from Dirranbandi and Jacquie Henwood from Toobeah. The $2780 all-inclusive weekend escape to Spicers Peak Lodge at Maryvale was won by Amy Much from the Talwood Pub and Nindigully girl Gina Mace won the $2000 makeover with Cosmetic Elegance. Sally Prosser from Mungindi won the Archie Bishop Jewellery and Gifts best dressed prize and Jocelyn Freeman in sparkling pink platform shoes won the McCartney and Creed best shoes prize. Organisers of the day, the Weengallon Kindy Mums, said the fundraiser wouldn’t have been possible without the support of their amazing sponsors which included Bentley’s Chartered Accountants, Cliff Beadle Design, O’Brien Toyota St George, The Toowoomba Prep School, AGnVET St George, Fisher Financial Solutions, Downlands College, Balonne Electrical, PCJ Beaute St George, Corish Lamb, Mitre 10 St George, Telstra, The Townhouse Motor Inn Goondiwindi and many more.
