Why Use Standardized Assessments?PROS:

-More tailored to the individual (diagnosis and level of impairment)

-Standardized normative sample

-Easy to track change/improvement

-Being standardized

CONS:

-Take more time to administer

-More materials required

-May not be appropriate for all patient profiles

-Being unfamiliar with administering assessment

Scales of Cognitive Ability for Traumatic Brain Injury (Higher Functioning Composite)

Cognitive Assessment: perception, discrimination, organization (lower functioning composite), recall of information, and problem solving skills (higher functioning composite)

Higher Functioning Composite: Combination of “Recall” and “Reasoning” subtests

Ideal Patient: High Level Cognitive Patient

Standardization Sample: The standardization sample consisted primarily of patients with closed-head injuries

Western Aphasia Battery-Revised Bedside ScreenerIdeal Patient: Adult with Left CVA

Will yield a Bedside Aphasia Score & Bedside Language Score

Scores can be converted into an Aphasia Classification based on Criterion Scores for individual items: Spontaneous Speech: Content & Fluency, Auditory Verbal Comprehension, Sequential Commands, Repetition, Object Naming, Reading, Writing

WHAT YOU NEED TO ADMINISTER: Picture (for picture description), magazine or reading passage, paper, pencil, 20 items in room, coin, paper, & pen

Strengths: quick to administer, sensitive to small changes, ideal to be used after a coma, good for identifying treatment objectives

Assessment of Language Related Functional Activities (ALFA)

WHAT IT TESTS: Functional Daily Activities: Subtests include: telling time, counting money, addressing mail, solving daily math problems, writing checks, understanding medicine labels, using a calculator for reading instructions, using a telephone, writing a message

WHO IS IT APPROPRIATE FOR: The ALFA’s subtests require use of all language modalities: auditory comprehension, verbal expression, reading and writing, as well as cognitive and motor skills. Also, the test allows you to observe multiple cognitive processes, which can sometimes eliminate the need to administer specialized tests for the assessment of certain areas.

WHAT YOU NEED TO ADMINISTER: ALFA stimulus book, ALFA Record Form, ALFA Stimulus Items (inside box with ax)

ALFACan be given as a supplement to shorter assessments (like the WAB-R)

Useful for assessment of medication management and other functional targets (ex:daily math, managing finances, telling time)
