INTRODUCTION

1. The present publication is the third revision to United Nations StandardCountry Codes (Series M, No. 49), prepared by the Statistics Division of theUnited Nations Secretariat and issued in 1970. 1/ Like its predecessors, thispublication presents a list of the names of countries or areas in alphabeticalorder, 2/ three-digit numerical codes used for statistical processing purposesby the Statistics Division of the United Nations Secretariat, three-digitalphabetical codes assigned by the International Organization forStandardization (ISO), 3/ and 12-character abbreviations used by the StatisticsDivision whenever abbreviated forms of country or area names are needed. Composition of geographical regions and of economic, trade and other groupingsof countries or areas used by the Statistics Division in its publications anddatabases are also shown. In addition, the annex tables show changes innumerical codes since the second revision was published, in 1982.

Countries or areas

2. The list of countries or areas shown in table 1 of the present publicationincludes those countries or areas for which statistical data are compiled by theStatistics Division of the United Nations Secretariat, as of 31 March 1996.

3. The names of countries or areas refer to their short form used inday-to-day operations of the United Nations and not necessarily to theirofficial name as used in formal documents. These names are based on TerminologyBulletin No. 347: Country Names.

4. Information shown within parentheses (round brackets) in the name of acountry or area is an integral part of the name.

Abbreviations of names

5. Twelve-character abbreviations for the English language names of countriesor areas have been assigned by the Statistics Division of the United NationsSecretariat for use where needed in statistical publications. They have beendesigned to establish maximum visual association with the full name of thecountry or area and to ensure a logical position when listed alphabetically. Where the number of characters permits, the full name is used in place of anabbreviation. In some instances an acronym or a widely used shortrepresentation of a name is used.

Composition of geographical regions and of economic, trade and other groupings

6. The geographical regions and groupings of countries and areas included inthe present publication are not comprehensive but only a selection which are ormay be used in the compilation of statistics as of 31 March 1996.

7. Macro geographical and component geographical regions for variousstatistical uses are shown in table 2, for the countries and areas that appearin table 1. In order to ensure consistency in statistics, each country or areais shown in one region only. The macro geographical regions are arranged to theextent possible according to continents. Within these groupings more detailedcomponent geographical regions are shown.

8. The selection of economic, trade and other groupings presented in table 3is organized mainly around economic and trade interests. Some of the groupingsare regional in nature, others span several continents. The groupings in thissection do not necessarily include all the countries or areas shown in table 1and some countries or areas may be included in more than one group.

Numerical codes

9. As an aid to statistical data processing, a unique standard three-digitnumerical code is assigned to each country or area and to each geographicalregion and grouping of countries or areas shown in the present publication. These codes range from 000 to 899, inclusive.

10. Codes 896 and 898 are assigned to "Areas not elsewhere specified" and "Notspecified", respectively. The designation "Areas not elsewhere specified" maybe used to denote countries or areas not shown individually in a giventabulation. The designation "Not specified" may be used to denote countries orareas for which the information needed for allocation is not available.

11. Codes 900 to 999 inclusive are available for individual users for their ownpurposes, for example to designate countries or areas and groupings not shown inthe present publication.

ISO alphabetical codes

12. Alphabetical codes for the representation of names of countries or areashave been developed by ISO. 3/ ISO's three-letter codes (ALPHA-3) are given,where available, for the countries or areas shown in the present publication. The ALPHA-3 codes have been provided for use in those specific instances where athree-letter code is preferred by the user.

Changes since the last issue

13. The geographical extent of a country or area, or the composition of ageographical region, may change over time and users should take such changesinto account in their use of codes shown in this publication when relating datafor different time periods. A change in the name of a country or area while itsgeographical coverage remains the same is not usually accompanied by a change inits numerical code. However, a change in name is generally accompanied by achange in the ISO alphabetical codes.

14. A major change in the geographical coverage of a country or area isgenerally accompanied by a change in its numerical code used for statisticalpurposes.

15. Changes in numerical codes and names of countries or areas and geographicalgroupings made since the second revision of the present publication are shown inthe annexes.

Description of the tables

16. The present publication consists of an introduction, four tables and twoannex tables, as described below:

(a) Table 1 lists the names of countries or areas in English alphabeticalorder and shows for each country or area its numerical code, the 12-letterabbreviation of its name and the three-letter ISO alphabetical code for therepresentation of its name;

(b) Table 2 lists the composition of macro geographical regions and theircomponent geographical regions and shows for each its numerical code. Undereach region the names and numerical codes of the countries or areas that composeit are listed;

(c) Table 3 lists the country and area composition of various economic,trade and other groupings commonly used in statistics and their codes. Thesegroupings are not necessarily inclusive of all countries or areas, and somecountries or areas may appear in more than one;

(d) Table 4 lists in numerical order all the numerical codes and names ofthe countries or areas and groupings shown in tables 1-3 and other numericalcodes used for special purposes;

(e) Annex tables A and B list changes in the country or area, regional andother numerical codes since the 1982 edition of the publication. Changes in thecomposition of regions which were assigned new codes are not shown but may bederived by referring to the listings contained in the 1982 edition.

a/ Classified by the General Assembly as of 31 March 1996. The GeneralAssembly, on the recommendation of the Committee for Development Planning,decides on the countries to be included in the list of the least developedcountries.

b/ There is no established convention for the designation of "developed"and "developing" countries or areas in the United Nations system. In commonpractice, Japan in Asia, Canada and the United States in northern America,Australia and New Zealand in Oceania and Europe are considered "developed"regions or areas. In international trade statistics, the Southern AfricanCustoms Union is also treated as a developed region and Israel as a developedcountry; countries emerging from the former Yugoslavia are treated as developingcountries; and countries of eastern Europe and the former USSR countries inEurope are not included under either developed or developing regions.
